Dr. Adam M. Sowards is an environmental historian who focuses on North America, especially the West. His work focuses primarily on the history of public lands and their relationship with American democracy. Currently, he is a writer. Previously, he was a Professor of History at the University of Idaho.Sowards writes the “Reckoning with History” column for High Country News. His work has appeared in Time, The Conversation, and Vox. He has published four non-ficiton books. His first book, "The Environmental Justice: William O. Douglas and American Conservation," was published in 2009.Sowards received his B.A. in History from the University of Puget Sound, his M.A. in History from Arizona State University, and his Ph.D. in History from Arizona State University.
