Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein is a physician. Currently, he is the Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.Sharfstein was Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health from 2011 to 2014. Before that, he was principal deputy commissioner of the U.S Food and Drug Administration. He is also the former health commissioner of Baltimore, Maryland.Sharfstein's first book, "The Public Health Crisis Survival Guide: Leadership and Management in Trying Times," was published in 2018. His second book, "The Opioid Epidemic: What Everyone Needs to Know," was published in 2019.
