It's a story that made sense, but

4:02
Kimball was a recent divorcee who
4:04
came to the Denver area seeking work on a

ranch. Around
4:09
the 1st of August 2004, he disappeared. Was
4:13
there any point, Agent Guzing, that you
4:15
realized that these cases, all four of
4:17
them, were somehow connected? Yes.
4:23
We know about four victims. We
4:26
don't know if there are other victims, but serial
4:28
killers don't just kill four people and be done
4:30
with it. The
4:32
person that was causing this trouble, his
4:35
name was Hannibal. Chilling.
4:38
It's silence of the land. Was
4:42
he in your town in 2003? Was he in your town in 2004?
4:44
Or was he in your town in 1999? He's
4:51
very, very manipulative. He
4:54
draws people into him. He makes
4:58
you believe great things will happen for you
5:00
and you end up dead. Harold
5:11
Dow reports Hannibal runnies. What's
5:14
your favorite picture of your life? What's
5:17
your favorite picture of your life? That's
5:20
for some reason one of my all-time favorite pictures
5:22
ever, because it looks like she's just sitting there,
5:26
sitting with you, not
5:29
posed, not formal, just hanging
5:31
out. This is Rob
5:33
McLeod's daily ritual. You say you visit this
5:35
website every day. Why do you do it?
5:38
Just to see her. Just
5:40
for a second. And then there's
5:42
been real emotional days that I can't. I
5:45
can't possibly look at
5:47
her pictures. Rob's
5:51
daughter, 19-year-old Casey McLeod, vanished
5:53
in August 2003. Tell
5:58
us about her personality. Bright
6:02
and bubbly and
6:05
fun. She was a very
6:07
happy, easy to get along with,
6:10
wanting to please type
6:12
of kid. She danced
6:14
and sang all the time, all around the
6:16
house all the time. Casey
6:21
was Rob and Lori McLeod's only
6:23
child. When
6:25
she was a toddler, they doted on her. Casey
6:30
was brought up in bubble
6:32
wrap. We protected
6:34
her from everything. But
6:37
Casey's sheltered life didn't last long.
6:39
Rob and Lori divorced when she
6:41
was four, and as she got
6:43
older, Casey grew rebellious. She
6:46
buttoned heads with her mom and started smoking
6:48
and started engaging in behavior in high school
6:50
that her mom didn't approve of and then
6:52
packed her up and moved her down to
6:54
her aunt's in Arizona. Phoenix
6:56
was Casey's new home, and that's
6:59
where she met best friend Tabitha
7:01
Morton. We were both turning 16,
7:03
I believe, when I met her. We were so
7:06
close, literally, that we were practically attached at
7:08
the hook. Because we worked together, we
7:10
were going to school together, and we spent so
7:12
much of our personal time together. But
7:15
after high school, Tabitha says Casey fell
7:17
in with the wrong crowd. There
7:20
was a girl that decided
7:23
to move in with her. This girl
7:25
was heavy into drugs, and
7:27
she was bringing lots of
7:29
people who were using drugs
7:32
to the house. Quite often, Casey kind of
7:34
fell into that. When
7:37
I noticed that something was wrong, I called
7:40
her aunt, and I said, I think that
7:42
Casey's in some trouble. So
7:46
she was sent back to Colorado in late
7:48
2001. It
7:50
didn't change our friendship. I think it actually made
7:52
it stronger because she knew I was really looking
7:54
out for her. She had a
7:57
few months of drug use.
8:00
But that's not who she was. As
8:03
Casey settled back into her old
8:05
surroundings, a new man entered
8:07
her mother's life, Scott Kimball.
8:10
He was great. And he
8:12
was very charming and funny
8:15
and smart. Now living
8:17
with Scott and Lori, Casey seemed to
8:20
be getting herself back on track with
8:22
new friends and a new job. But
8:27
then came a shocking disappointment. Scott
8:30
found drugs in the house. And
8:35
when I confronted Casey, she
8:37
swore to me that they weren't hers.
8:40
She begged me to get a
8:43
drug test and that I
8:45
didn't believe her. When
8:47
Lori threatened to turn her into the
8:49
cops, Casey took off down the road
8:52
on her bicycle. What did
8:54
you think happened to Casey? I
8:57
thought she took off because I didn't
8:59
believe her. I
9:03
worried thick about her. I drove
9:05
around looking for her. At
9:07
first, Rob was angry. Casey had
9:10
run away before. I
9:12
was worried about her, but
9:15
not to the point of that I thought
9:17
any foul play happened. I figured she was
9:19
over, found a friend, and was crashing over
9:21
at their place. She'd call
9:23
or eventually just show up like
9:27
she had before. But
9:30
two days later, when Casey failed to show
9:32
up for her shift at a sandwich shop,
9:35
Lori became frantic. I
9:38
went to the police and
9:41
they told me that it was not my right to find
9:43
her. Casey was over 18. She
9:45
was not a runaway. She
9:47
simply left. You didn't
9:49
file a missing person's report? The
9:52
police won't allow that. There had to be
9:54
blood evidence of foul play in
9:56
order to file a missing person's report. But
10:00
Laurie had the support of Scott
10:02
Kimball, who had important law enforcement
10:05
contacts. He worked for the FBI. He
10:08
helped catch bad guys. So
10:10
when she disappeared, did you talk to
10:12
Scott? Yes. What did Scott say?
10:16
With his connections with the FBI, we'll find
10:18
her. Desperate, Laurie
10:20
even married Scott, seeing him as
10:23
the only hope to finding her
10:25
daughter. And sure enough,
10:27
he turned up a few leads, including
10:30
evidence that Casey had stopped by
10:32
the house very recently, when no
10:34
one was home. He
10:36
found Casey's necklace on her doorknob. Even
10:39
more promising, Scott found a neighbor
10:42
who said he had seen Casey
10:44
weeks after she disappeared. The
10:46
neighbor said that Casey
10:49
had been at the house with her boyfriend
10:51
and his sister. Like
10:56
in Phoenix, Tabitha Morton was also
10:58
looking frantically for her friend. I
11:01
called everybody that we knew I set up a
11:03
MySpace page for her, contacted
11:06
people from high school, passed
11:08
out flyers. Weeks
11:10
then months went by. The
11:13
most terrible thing for me to think of of
11:15
my daughter is that someone took her something
11:18
precious, something important
11:20
to me, and destroyed it and
11:22
threw it away. Like
11:24
it wasn't important to anybody. Together,
11:27
Rob and Tabitha began to wonder
11:29
if the key to Casey's disappearance
11:32
might be much closer to home.
11:34
It was just this nagging feeling that kept
11:36
going through my head that there was something more
11:39
than what we were finding. Finding
11:46

13:36
Rob McLeod from the time
13:38
his daughter Casey vanished in
13:41
August 2003. But
13:44
what Rob didn't know was that
13:46
another Colorado father was asking those
13:49
very same questions. months
14:00
before Casey McLeod disappeared,
14:02
Howard Emory's 24-year-old daughter,
14:05
Leanne, had also mysteriously
14:07
vanished. So
14:09
Howard, tell me about this picture of
14:12
Leanne. She was about 14 years
14:14
old. As you can see, she also loved the
14:16
outdoors. We were always exploring
14:19
the Rocky Mountains. Howard Emory
14:21
has spent countless hours replaying
14:23
Leanne's life, a life
14:26
that began full of promise. She was a
14:28
straight A student in high school and actually
14:30
graduated a year early. But
14:33
Leanne's life soon spiraled downwards. Her
14:35
mother's severe health problems kept Leanne
14:37
from finishing college. She
14:39
lost her job as a veterinarian's assistant
14:42
and she landed in an abusive marriage.
14:45
I think it was almost kind of the turning point.
14:47
I think she had a real feeling that she really
14:49
wasn't worth much, that she couldn't do much. In
14:52
2002, Leanne left her husband, but
14:55
her father was still concerned because
14:57
she began a relationship with a
14:59
prisoner named Stephen Holly. On
15:03
January 16, 2003,
15:06
Leanne's car with its unique license plate
15:08
pulled out of the driveway. The
15:11
dog she loved the most was Dalmatians. On
15:14
her car, she had a license
15:16
plate that said, Dal Gal. Leanne
15:19
said she was heading for a caving
15:21
trip in Mexico with friends. But
15:29
two weeks later, Howard got a call that
15:31
still haunts him. It was
15:33
the Sheriff's Department in Moab, Utah.
15:37
And they says, well, I hate
15:39
to tell you, but we found
15:41
her car abandoned in the Canyonlands
15:44
in Moab, Utah just yesterday. They
15:49
told me about the license plate and
15:51
I knew immediately, this is Leanne's car.
15:57
All her clothes, stuff
15:59
like that. left in the
16:01
car. Brent Pace, a
16:03
seasoned Utah investigator and tracker,
16:05
could tell someone had picked
16:07
Leanne up. The car was
16:09
actually pulled straight into here,
16:12
just like this, like you just drove in
16:14
off that road and parked it right here.
16:17
And then the driver got out and walked
16:19
back and got in another vehicle. One
16:22
set of shoe prints leaving this car to
16:24
another set of tire tracks. And
16:27
because of that, you know, we were kind
16:29
of concerned, you know, maybe
16:31
something did happen out here. Like the McClouds,
16:33
Howard tried to file a missing persons report
16:36
back in Colorado, but was shut
16:38
down. So
16:42
he decided to play detective himself.
16:44
I want to know why
16:46
she was gone. There's
16:51
obviously a million questions here. Using
16:57
credit card records, Howard pieced
16:59
together Leanne's trail in the
17:01
weeks before she disappeared. She
17:04
didn't go to Mexico. He
17:06
discovered Leanne was leading a secret
17:09
life. She
17:11
spent the 10 days before she
17:13
vanished traveling through the western United
17:15
States, writing bad checks and charging
17:17
thousands of dollars to her
17:20
father's credit card. I
17:22
was totally bewildered. She
17:24
was either threatened or blackmailed. She would not
17:26
have done this on her own. And
17:30
it seemed Howard was right. He
17:33
came across several emails Leanne had sent
17:35
a cousin just days before she left.
17:38
Emails that hinted she was in trouble, but
17:41
was being protected by someone with a
17:43
curious nickname. She
17:46
says, and as for Hannibal, I think I
17:48
can trust him. He's actually protecting me. My
17:51
thought is protecting her from what? A
17:54
few clues arrived in several cryptic
17:57
letters from Leanne's prison boyfriend, Stephen
17:59
Howard. Lee mainly told me
18:01
that she was in terrible
18:04
danger and please call the
18:06
F B I immediately. Alarmed,
18:11
Howard went to visit Holly who told
18:13
him that Hannibal was a former inmate.
18:16
He had put in touch with. Leann
18:18
by says tell me about Hannibal do
18:20
you think he would hurt my daughter
18:22
says as well I really don't think
18:25
terrible would hardly an but Hannibal does
18:27
know some people the wouldn't hesitate to
18:29
kill the end of he asked them
18:31
to do it. Was
18:36
Holly refused to reveal animals
18:38
true identity? And
18:40
when Howard brought holly story to
18:42
the F B I the agency
18:45
spoke to dismissed it as pure
18:47
fiction. As
18:49
a possible kidnapping here. and yet. and
18:51
yet he so no interest whatsoever. As
18:56
time passed, every one was left
18:58
with more questions than when they
19:00
began. Even read Pace who kept
19:03
up the search is hard to
19:05
be involved in a case and
19:07
not know the why's why's this
19:09
happen? It's hard to forgive cisterna
19:12
cases are minutes, somebody's child, a
19:14
human being and own so other
19:16
questions you really want answers. What?
19:20
No One realized? Hannibal was actually
19:22
working for the F B I.
19:26
Had been married to Laurie Macleod.
19:30
Animals real name. Scott.
19:33
Symbol. Only.
19:56
More. you macleod began having suspicions
19:58
about scott campbell after they were
20:00
married in August 2003, the
20:03
same month her daughter Casey went missing.
20:08
Off and on, he would say things that
20:10
didn't feel right, and again,
20:13
when I would question him, he would make me
20:15
feel I was losing my mind. And
20:18
to be perfectly honest, I wanted
20:20
to feel that what I
20:22
was thinking wasn't
20:24
right. But
20:28
it wasn't until two years later
20:30
that Lori shared some disturbing information
20:32
with her ex-husband, Rob McLeod. I'm
20:34
talking to Lori, she goes, well,
20:36
that whole weekend Casey went missing
20:38
is not quite what
20:40
I told you, there's a little bit more to it than
20:42
that. What did she say? She said
20:45
Scott took off the same weekend Casey
20:47
did on a solo, mystery, I don't
20:49
know where he went, camping
20:51
trip. Lori and
20:53
Rob weren't the only ones asking questions.
20:56
In early 2006, Kimball
20:59
became a suspect in a case that
21:01
Lafayette, Colorado, detective Gary Thatcher was investigating.
21:03
When did you first hear of the
21:06
name Scott Kimball? It
21:08
was when I had an officer come to me
21:10
with this check fraud case. That was the first
21:12
time I heard about him. Thatcher
21:15
learned that Kimball's job with the
21:17
FBI was as a paid criminal
21:19
informant. He was
21:21
also a con artist who had
21:23
spent most of his life racking up
21:26
felony convictions and prison time all
21:28
over the western United States. But
21:32
when Thatcher went to find Kimball, he was
21:34
gone. Well, it was January 2006. Initially,
21:37
I was talking to Lori about where is Scott
21:39
Kimball, and then she dropped that
21:41
on me, that Casey is missing, and
21:43
she's suspicious of Scott. That
21:45
was the eye opener that, you
21:48
know, the check fraud is important
21:50
here, but there's a much
21:52
bigger picture to this investigation. A
21:57
warrant was put out for Kimball's arrest.
21:59
Two months later, U.S. Marshals
22:01
tracked him down and after
22:04
a dramatic high-speed chase through
22:06
California's Coachella Valley, arrested the
22:08
con man. Now
22:11
with Kimball safely in custody, Detective
22:14
Thatcher made a vow to Rob
22:16
McLeod. He says, Rob, where there's
22:18
smoke, there's fire. He says, I
22:20
will not forget Casey. I
22:22
will not rest until we figure out what happened
22:25
to her. As
22:29
Thatcher dug deeper, he learned
22:31
from the FBI that Kimball
22:33
was connected years earlier to yet
22:35
another missing Colorado woman, Jennifer
22:38
Markham. Now it was just one more thing
22:40
added onto the pile of
22:42
suspicion. Jennifer was a
22:44
struggling single mother who worked as a
22:46
stripper. On February 17, 2003,
22:50
she visited her boyfriend, drug dealer
22:53
Steve Ennis, in prison. Shortly
22:56
after that visit, she
22:58
vanished. Just
23:03
total anxiety, beginning to wonder where
23:06
is she? Her father, Bob Markham, like
23:08
the other fathers, was stumped. All you
23:10
can do is hope that maybe she'd
23:13
been arrested, somehow put in
23:15
jail, that that's where she's at. How
23:17
old did you go through that? Pretty
23:20
year. Then one day,
23:22
Bob's phone rang. It was an FBI
23:24
agent named Carl Slough. And they asked
23:27
if Jennifer's there. And I said, no.
23:29
At that point, Ethan said that something bad
23:32
may have happened to her. Agent
23:35
Slough revealed that Jennifer's car had been
23:37
found abandoned at the Denver airport. It
23:39
was after a while that we found
23:41
out that they had found it a
23:44
year before. And nobody had contacted us.
23:47
Doesn't that seem odd? I
23:49
couldn't believe it. Markham
23:51
kept pressing Slough for answers, so
23:53
the agent set up a meeting
23:55
with his informant, who had once
23:57
shared a prison cell with Jennifer's
23:59
boyfriend. That informant was
24:02
Scott Kimball. He
24:06
told me where she was, how
24:09
she died, how it happened, everything.
24:15
Jennifer's mother, Mary Willis, came with
24:17
Bob to this park to meet
24:19
Scott Kimball. He told them that
24:22
Jennifer had been killed by some
24:24
of her boyfriend's drug associates. Kimball
24:26
said he had even seen pictures
24:28
of her dead. He
24:33
told me she was strangled. She
24:36
was tied up and she was strangled from behind.
24:39
And she put up a fight. As
24:42
he was telling you this, what were you thinking of him?
24:45
I was thinking, how could
24:47
he know this? Then
24:50
Kimball made Jennifer's parents a chilling
24:52
offer. When we were done with
24:54
the conversation, get ready to leave, then he
24:57
came up and said, if you
24:59
stay until tomorrow, I'll go up in the mountains with you and
25:02
take you up in the mountains to show you where she's at. You
25:04
didn't go with him, neither did your ex-wife. No,
25:07
when we got done
25:09
talking at the picnic table and stuff, I'd
25:12
already decided that Scott Kimball had killed
25:14
my daughter. I
25:18
thought that if we went in the mountains with him the
25:21
next day or then, that they'd never see
25:23
us again. When
25:26
Jennifer's parents brought their suspicions to Agent
25:28
Slough, he dismissed them and defended his
25:30
informant. He trusted Scott Kimball, never should
25:32
have trusted Scott Kimball. I
25:36
always had the impression that the
25:39
FBI has meet Scott. To
25:41
make it so we would feel badly
25:43
about what Jennifer was
25:45
doing and how she'd been living in her
25:48
life. I
25:50
didn't care because I loved Jennifer,
25:53
and no matter what she did, we wanted
25:57
her back. I
26:00
think they really thought that by doing this,
26:03
we would become one of the families that
26:05
would just turn around and
26:08
get on the airplane and
26:10
go back home and
26:12
Jennifer would just be, disappear. So
26:16
Bob Markham took matters into his own
26:19
hands and put up a
26:21
billboard next to the strip club where
26:23
Jennifer had once danced. We wanted to
26:25
try and find out if someone would
26:27
come forward some information about her. It
26:30
worked and in June of
26:32
2006, this would have been a couple months after
26:34
Scott was apprehended, I'm reading
26:36
in the newspaper about Bob Markham putting
26:38
up a billboard for his missing daughter
26:41
for Jennifer Markham. And as I'm reading
26:43
the story, I come across Scott Kimball's
26:45
name in the story. He is the
26:47
last one Jennifer was spending time with.
26:50
My heart about leapt out of my chest. When
26:54
Rob called, he
26:56
said, we have something in common.
26:59
He said my daughter disappeared
27:02
and my ex-wife is married
27:04
to Scott Kimball. Hungry
27:07
for more information, Bob went to
27:09
see Lori McLeod. And then
27:11
I asked Lori, is there
27:14
anyone else that you could
27:16
think of that you'd been
27:18
around you and Scott that
27:21
you haven't ever seen again? And it
27:23
was just like a light bulb went off in her head.
27:26
She sat back in a chair and then she goes, oh
27:29
my God. She
27:31
says, Uncle Terry came and
27:33
lived with us for
27:35
a couple weeks. And then
27:37
he left and we'd never seen him again. Scott
27:40
Kimball's Uncle Terry Kimball had vanished from
27:42
their home in 2004. And
27:46
I immediately knew that
27:49
I finally had something to go to the FBI
27:51
with. So,
27:53
together Bob Markham and Rob
27:56
McLeod, two fathers with missing
27:58
daughters, marched into the FBI. FBI's
28:00
Denver office and revealed their suspicions about Scott
28:02
Kimball to the new supervisor. The final thing
28:04
we told them is you guys have a
28:07
choice. You could be the hero of the
28:09
zero. Either look into it or you can
28:11
be the zero and you can ignore it.
28:14
I think they took it as, wow,
28:16
maybe there is something here. We better
28:18
look into it. Tamp
28:28
check. What kind of summer are we having this
28:30
year? A family road trip summer? A

30:00
Mark I'm and Rob my met
30:02
with the F B I Special
30:04
Agent Jonathan Grew same was assigned
30:06
to investigate Scott Campbell. If you
30:08
had to pick one thing that
30:10
drives got tumble. What? Is. Greed.
30:13
most likely. And now
30:15
agreed for money. But he craves attention
30:17
and he craves power as well. Joining.
30:20
Aging bruising on the case. was
30:23
Detective Gary Thatcher already a year
30:25
into his own investigation of Campbell?
30:29
Together they embarked on the most complex
30:31
cat and mouse game of their careers.
30:33
As they began to interview Campbell who
30:35
was still in jail pending fraud charges
30:37
you know he's very good, was come
30:39
up with stories and so when you're
30:41
sitting there listening to your think and
30:43
how do I prove this, how do
30:45
I disprove it out? Oh I, you
30:47
know, substantiate. as with fact, One
30:50
of kimball stories was that his
30:53
uncle Terry now missing for two
30:55
years had one be Ohio lottery
30:57
and moved to Mexico with a
30:59
stripper. Though. House they lottery never
31:02
paid out or Terry Kimball who's never
31:04
have a winner. The investigators suspected Terry
31:06
was murdered when Kimball discovered he had
31:09
come into some money from a divorce.
31:11
Terry was carrying around thousands and thousands
31:13
of dollars in a briefcase he would
31:15
let go of. For.
31:17
Me, that's enough motive for him to kill Terry.
31:20
Next. Goosing and Thatcher focused
31:22
on Jennifer Markham. She
31:25
had first com to Kimball's attention when
31:28
he shared a cell with her boyfriend
31:30
Steve Ennis. Back in Two Thousand Two,
31:32
and Scott Campbell saw pictures of Jennifer
31:35
up on the wall. And
31:37
she was very attractive woman and he
31:39
made such comments to Steve that he
31:41
could find her a good job when
31:43
he got out of prison. What was
31:45
his real motive? Is
31:47
real motive was to have Jennifer for
31:49
himself. The
31:52
com man also wanted to get out
31:54
of prison and he had a plan
31:56
kimball convince the F B I that
31:58
Jennifer Mortem was. part of a
32:01
murder for hire plot. No information that
32:03
I have says that she even knew
32:05
about this plot that Scott was spending
32:07
when he was there in prison. But
32:10
the FBI bought Kimball's story at the
32:12
time. And when he
32:15
was released in December 2002, he went
32:17
to work as an informant in
32:19
the phony case. Two months later,
32:22
Jennifer vanished. And
32:25
while Goosing was trying to figure out
32:28
what actually happened to Jennifer, he got
32:30
an unexpected lead. So
32:33
I interviewed Steve Ennis about
32:35
Jennifer's disappearance. And
32:37
at the end of the interview, when we were about
32:40
to wrap up, he said, oh, and one other thing,
32:43
there was another guy down here in the prison that
32:45
had a girlfriend disappear that Scott might have had something
32:47
to do with. That
32:50
inmate was Stephen Holly, Leanne
32:52
Emery's boyfriend. I
32:56
spoke with Mr. Emery and
32:58
said, I'm doing an investigation. I'm trying to
33:00
speak with Leanne Emery. And
33:02
he said, we haven't seen Leanne since 2003. When
33:05
you heard those words, what thoughts were
33:08
in the moment? I did send a chill down my spine because
33:11
I knew then that this was going to be another
33:13
victim of Scott Kimball. Investigators
33:17
felt they could prove that when
33:19
they found Leanne's picture, her hair
33:21
died brown on Kimball's laptop. Boulder
33:24
County prosecutor Amy Akubo.
33:26
Oh my God, the last person that Casey was
33:28
known to be with was Scott Kimball. Oh my
33:31
God, the last person that Jennifer Markham was known
33:33
to be with was Scott Kimball. Oh my God,
33:36
Leanne Emery was the last person that
33:38
Scott Kimball was with. And so bit
33:40
by bit, piece by piece, it became
33:42
apparent just how dangerous he was. But
33:46
there were still no bodies, and the
33:48
con man was admitting to nothing. Investigators
33:52
kept pushing, and finally in April 2008, Kimball dropped
33:54
a hint. He
33:57
said in this meeting that
33:59
there wasn't. who died of
34:01
a drug overdose that was on national forest
34:03
land. Gruesing
34:06
had a receipt showing Kimball
34:08
was in Walden, Colorado, near a
34:11
national forest. That same weekend,
34:13
Casey McLeod went missing. He
34:16
called the Forest Service. I asked
34:18
if they had any missing people up there.
34:20
I ended up speaking with basically
34:22
the phone receptionist, and she
34:24
said, no, but a skull was found up here
34:26
last winter, so maybe you can check on that.
34:30
A hunter had stumbled across the skull.
34:33
Gruesing ordered a DNA test on
34:35
the remains, and
34:38
they proved to be Casey
34:40
McLeod. Finally,
34:44
the Scott Kimball case was an
34:46
official homicide investigation. And he went
34:48
to Great Links to conceal these
34:51
bodies, and I believe he thought no
34:53
one would ever find them. After
34:58
four long years, Rob
35:00
McLeod finally had an answer to his
35:02
prayers. One way or another,
35:06
she's coming home. She's not
35:08
lost anymore. And
35:15
Lori McLeod's worst nightmares were realized.
35:18
What do you think really happened?
35:21
I believe Scott planted the drugs to set
35:23
everything up. That was to get her out
35:25
of the house? Yes. So
35:28
he can get her? To separate us, yes. You
35:30
find out that the man that you married, the
35:33
man who said he was going to be there to help
35:35
you find Casey, you
35:37
now find out that he may have been the one who killed her.
35:40
Yes. It's impossible
35:42
to describe knowing
35:44
that you've married your daughter's
35:46
murderer. But
35:50
with no evidence of how Casey died,
35:52
and with no other bodies, prosecutors
35:54
worried they still did not have
35:57
enough to put Kimball on trial
35:59
for murder. meeting after meeting
36:01
after meeting and briefing and
36:03
continual here's all the evidence
36:05
that we have do you think we have enough
36:07
yet in December 2008 prosecutors
36:11
got one step closer to putting
36:13
Kimball away for good when he
36:16
was sentenced to 48 years on
36:18
his recent nonviolent crimes but
36:21
lead prosecutor Katarina Booth wanted more
36:23
what we wanted him marked for
36:25
of course is the violent you
36:27
know murderer that he is so
36:32
prosecutors made a difficult decision they
36:35
offered Kimball a deal no
36:37
charges of first-degree murder if he would
36:39
lead them to the three missing bodies
36:42
Kimball accepted and in the winter of
36:44
2009 he led authorities
36:46
to the remote canyons of Eastern
36:48
Utah where he claimed they would
36:50
find the remains of Lee Ann
36:52
Emory and Jennifer Markham everyday
36:59
is full of energy and he gave us
37:01
to do list did you do this did
37:03
you get satellite imagery did you get a
37:05
plane to fly me over Kimball
37:08
spent days leading the FBI and
37:10
the Grand County Sheriff's Department on
37:12
a fruitless search for Lee Ann
37:16
but then agent gruesome spotted
37:18
something right in here right
37:21
in here yeah what exactly did you see down
37:23
there some bones for
37:25
the big boulder is and
37:28
then there was a rock to the
37:30
left lifted up the rock and it was a hair
37:32
clip with hair by
37:35
that time and it was her Lee
37:42
Ann Emory had lain on this
37:44
lonely canyon ledge for six years
37:47
she had a high potential and
37:50
she just she took the wrong for God
37:52
involved with the wrong people and
37:54
she didn't deserve this found
37:57
near her bones was a spent bullet
37:59
it matched Scott Kimball's gun.
38:02
We believe that Scott marched her up here and
38:06
executed her. Why
38:12
do you suppose Scott Kimball murdered
38:14
Leanne? Leanne had been dragged into
38:17
laundering money for Scott, so I
38:19
believe that Leanne had served
38:21
her purpose and that he was done
38:24
with her, and that's why he took her up here
38:26
and killed her.
38:28
Now only one missing woman
38:30
remained. But
38:32
is this suspected serial killer finally ready
38:35
to reveal what happened to Jennifer Markham?
38:37
Do you know where her remains are?
38:39

39:54
you. I
40:00
think Scott enjoys manipulating people. He's
40:03
very good at twisting the truth.
40:07
After taking investigators to the body
40:09
of Leann Emery, Scott Campbell told
40:11
them weird to find the remains
40:13
of his Uncle Terry but his
40:15
leads about Jennifer Markham's body and
40:18
Utah turned up empty. We not
40:20
only searched at with Scott here
40:22
we came back and searched and
40:24
with Grand County with canine unit
40:26
researched it with a geologists with
40:28
flown Oliver with airplanes. And
40:31
up here do you know exactly which know
40:33
I I believe I'm a know the area
40:35
there in reactor realize. I was
40:38
at the one time. It was
40:40
dark. I was
40:42
there once. Scott Campbell insists he's
40:45
trying to help find Jennifer. What
40:47
Is it? Just another com? I've
40:49
made every effort. To. Help them
40:51
with Jennifer. I've told him I'd take a
40:53
polygraph to me for them being truthful in
40:56
the directions I've given him. What I remember,
40:58
he's very methodical, He's. Very careful
41:00
where he puts his victims. And
41:03
I give it basically zero probability
41:05
that he has forgotten. or Jennifer
41:07
Markham is. Nevertheless,
41:13
in October, two thousand nine,
41:15
the families of Scott Kimball's
41:18
victims gather in court. Is
41:21
nice to build a be there to look
41:23
him in the eye and in a watch
41:25
him takes some accountability. The con man had
41:27
been charged with second degree murder. Amount
41:31
of felt very mobile.we
41:33
are more about a
41:35
marked man over cloud.
41:44
And with that word, guilty,
41:47
a monumental six year case
41:49
finally comes to an end.
41:51
You. Never gave up his family's because
41:53
he can only imagine the torture of
41:55
England, France and and. Their
41:58
distress in South. And
42:01
now Bob Markham and Rob
42:03
McLeod, the two fathers whose
42:06
determination forced the FBI to
42:08
investigate what happened to their
42:10
daughters, addressed the court. Casey
42:13
Dawn McLeod was my first born daughter. I
42:16
was present right there at the very first moment she
42:19
took her first breath. Scott
42:21
Kimball was there to take her last. Scott
42:25
Kimball has destroyed our lives. Our
42:27
lives will never be the same. How
42:30
many other people are missing as a result of
42:32
his life? And
42:36
Howard Emery finally confronts
42:38
Hannibal. My daughter
42:40
was a young woman with feelings and
42:42
dreams. And to treat
42:44
her like trash is despicable. He is
42:46
a liar, a deceiver, a murderer. For
42:51
the deaths of four people, Scott
42:53
Kimball is sentenced to 70 years.
42:57
But he insists he's not a serial
42:59
killer. I'm just a guy. People
43:02
would call me cold-blooded, cold-hearted, but you'll find dozens
43:05
of people that will say just the opposite. He'll give you the shirt off
43:07
his back. He freely admits
43:09
only to the murder of his
43:11
own uncle and speaks in
43:13
riddles about the three young women. I
43:16
did kill Terry Kimball. I did.
43:18
And for the other three, I was a mechanism.
43:22
I was part of the mechanics. Mechanism
43:25
could be many things. It could be the person
43:27
pulling the trigger. It could be. It could be the
43:29
person that arranged for the hit or the death or whatever you
43:31
want to call it. There's a lot
43:33
it could be. If there were other people involved who
43:35
committed the murders, you're not going to reveal
43:37
who it was. Never will I reveal who
43:39
it was. I'm not the FBI. I'm not the police. Investigators
43:44
say Kimball won't name accomplices for
43:46
a very good reason. They
43:48
don't exist. I think
43:50
the murders of these women are very private
43:52
to him. I believe there was
43:54
some sort of sexual attraction for him as well
43:57
that he doesn't like to talk about. I
44:00
believe that's why he's able to take responsibility for
44:02
Uncle Terry's death, because it was purely for financial
44:04
gain. But there was something else involved
44:07
with Scott and these three girls. Whatever
44:10
darkness fuels Scott Kimball's murderous
44:13
rampage, the victims' families
44:15
are grateful the FBI finally
44:17
helped unmask the killer.
44:20
Did anyone from the FBI
44:22
ever apologize to you? Repeatedly. They
44:25
said, we're sorry, this has all
44:27
happened. He hoodwinked us. He's fooled
44:30
everybody. Yet they
44:32
remain angry at the system and
44:34
Agent Karl Schloss, whose negligence, they
44:36
say, gave Kimball the freedom to
44:38
commit the murders. If someone were
44:40
watching Scott, Casey would still be
44:42
here today. Jennifer
44:45
was the person he was let out of prison
44:47
to monitor, and she
44:49
went missing almost immediately. Jim
44:52
Davis of the FBI's Denver
44:55
office says the FBI cannot
44:57
constantly monitor criminal informants. We
45:00
can't control them 24 hours a day. We
45:02
just, we don't have the resources
45:05
to do that. And really, we don't have
45:07
the authority to do it. You know, this
45:09
case is a tragedy. I
45:11
mean, it's a tragedy for the victims. It's
45:13
a tragedy for the victims' families. But to
45:15
be clear, you know, the individual responsible for
45:17
that is Scott Kimball. And
45:20
it's not the FBI. It's not anybody else. It
45:22
is him. He did it. I don't know if
45:24
we use the phrase dealing with the devil. I
45:26
guess you were dealing with the devil in
45:28
this case. He is as close as I've seen. What
45:34
remains are shattered lives, but
45:37
at least two lost daughters have
45:39
finally come home. As
45:44
long as I'm alive, her
45:46
memory is always going to be there. And
45:49
I have to reconcile the fact
45:51
that I won't ever
45:53
see her again. Casey's
45:57
loss is like the background noise of my
45:59
life. life. I can
46:01
find joy and happiness and
46:03
feel normal a lot of the time,
46:06
but when it's quiet, she's
46:09
that background noise that's always there.
46:13
However, the search for Jennifer Markham
46:16
continues. As her father waits for
46:18
news that may never come,
46:22
he takes solace in the fact
46:24
that it was his perseverance that
46:27
helped put his daughter's killer away.
46:30
The possibility today exists
46:33
that you may never know where she's buried. That's
46:37
true. I really would like to have my daughter's
46:39
body packed, but knowing
46:41
that Scott Kimball is in
46:43
prison and that he's not going to be getting out of
46:45
prison for at least 35 years
46:49
means more to me than you can imagine. And
46:52
to me, my daughter's soul is in
46:54
heaven and wherever her
46:56
body is, it'll be
46:59
joined back with her
47:01
soul someday. In
47:07
2017, Scott Kimball was charged with
47:09
solicitation of murder and attempted to
47:11
escape from prison. In
47:13
2020, four years were added to his
47:16
previous 70-year prison sentence. Audible
