0:10
my name's Christina Freel. I'm one
0:12
of the creators of Academy and
0:14
I love scary stories. So I
0:16
have to tell you about the new
0:18
podcast Run Fool, created by the
0:20
incredible Rodney Barnes. It is
0:22
genuinely so spooky. I locked myself in my
0:24
room because I got so scared and now
0:27
I can't get out. Here's
0:31
a clip from Run Fool. I'll be back right
0:33
after. It's
0:36
the middle of the night. You're in
0:38
a deep, heavy slumber until
0:42
slowly you stir. You
0:45
realize your chest is heavy. You
0:48
open your eyes, but you
0:50
can't focus because you're not awake. But
0:54
the thing is, you're not asleep either.
0:59
All you know is there's something on top of you,
1:01
something alive, that's deeply inhaling
1:04
whatever breath emerges from your lips. You
1:07
want to move, but your heavy, sleep-ridden
1:09
limbs won't let you. You
1:11
want to scream, but your mouth won't open.
1:14
And just trying to do either of these elicits
1:16
a growl from the thing that's on your chest.
1:20
Unfortunately for you, this isn't
1:22
a dream. It's a
1:24
boo-hag. And if you feel
1:26
it sitting on you in the middle of the night, you're
1:29
out of luck. It's already
1:31
too late. I
1:37
heard about the boo-hag while staying in the
1:39
Georgia sticks, somewhere outside of
1:42
Savannah. See, I'd been
1:44
tasked with writing a script set in that area
1:46
and sometimes the words don't flow unless you're there
1:48
in the flesh. Unfortunately,
1:50
even after I got to town, the
1:53
words still weren't coming. It
1:55
made this worry seep in, a
1:58
cruel internal nature. Sarah
2:00
in my head started telling me all kinds
2:02
of tales, that I wasn't good enough
2:04
to write this thing, that I'd never get
2:06
it done, which is why I
2:08
found a way to procrastinate putting pen to paper, and
2:11
involved making a social call to
2:14
some friends who lived even further out in the
2:16
Boney's. They
2:18
were surprisingly iffy on having me. When
2:21
I got there, I found out why. Something
2:23
had happened, next door, and
2:26
it made them afraid for the safety of
2:28
any potential guests. A creature
2:30
called a boohag had made a social call to
2:33
their neighbor. According to
2:35
them, this kind of hag is a special
2:37
breed of witch, straight from
2:39
Gullah folklore, brought to Georgia's
2:41
low country on the lips of enslaved people
2:44
who toiled there. It's
2:46
considered by some to be a metaphor for
2:48
possession, or an old
2:50
explanation for sleep paralysis. But
2:52
really, the boohag is a whole
2:54
lot more than that. It's a
2:56
night prowler, the denizen of
2:58
evil that sneaks into homes through the
3:00
tiniest of cracks, an open
3:03
window, a door lock. Once
3:05
inside, it sits on its victim's chest and
3:08
steals their breath while they sleep. That's
3:11
how these vampiric creatures feed, you
3:13
see, on your
3:15
air, your life force.
3:19
If you somehow manage to fight back, boohags
3:21
don't like that. It'll make
3:24
them take something from you, something
3:26
even more essential than your breath. Before
3:30
I get into what that is, I do want to
3:32
warn you. This story,
3:35
it got under my skin, and
3:37
I bet it's going to get under yours too. You
3:44
can listen to Run Fool on Apple Podcasts,
3:46
Spotify, wherever you listen, just make sure to
3:48
be in a room where someone can slide
3:50
a snack under the door. I
3:53
should have thought of that. Hello? Hello?
