1:34
there folks, yellow casseroles and
1:37
red, white and blue cakes.
1:40
The things I'm learning about the 4th of July in
1:42
this episode of Amy and TJ. This is not how
1:44
we plan on the start robes. We're talking about the
1:46
4th. Everybody's getting ready for the 4th. Of
1:48
course, I Heart getting ready for the 4th. I Heart getting ready
1:51
for the 4th as well. But just in the
1:53
discussion here in the room, I did not know
1:55
it was a thing or tradition to
1:57
some degree. Maybe it yours, maybe not, but it's some people's.
2:00
to have a what that's decorated red,
2:02
white, and blue. Well, basically, you just take, you
2:04
know, if you're at some sort of a potluck,
2:07
you know, neighborhood party, which is what I grew
2:09
up going to, everyone would bring different dishes,
2:11
and among them would be desserts. And so
2:13
it's very easy to decorate a dessert with
2:15
red, white, and blue, strawberries, blueberries, white frosting,
2:17
you can play around with it however you'd
2:19
like, but yeah, I remember those kind of
2:22
cupcakes or jello casseroles or
2:25
cheesecake with- I'm gonna stop you on the jello casserole,
2:27
what's that? You know what, I don't
2:29
even really know, and I've never replicated in my
2:31
adult life, but as a kid, I remember my
2:33
mom making some dish with jello, with cream, there
2:36
might've been walnuts in it. I
2:38
don't think we put the raisins in it, but
2:40
I think some people do. You probably did. It
2:42
sounds disgusting. No, I hate raisins. But- So
2:45
I don't think- You all probably thought- and
2:48
we put raisins in shit. I didn't say that. You
2:50
said it with your eyes to me. I don't
2:52
wanna make raisin eyes. No, I think you made raisin eyes. You did,
2:54
I felt like you were making raisin eyes in me. So
2:57
I've never recreated that dish, but
2:59
I remember kind of liking it
3:01
and kind of being grossed out by it at the same time.
3:03
And since it was full of sugar, I just went ahead and
3:05
ate it. And I went with it. Okay, I did not
3:07
know those things, but what were you all's- You
3:09
and I have been going back and forth for days, maybe
3:11
even weeks now, trying to figure out what we wanna do
3:14
for the fourth. We are throwing around some
3:16
possibilities and options, but what did you all do
3:18
growing up? What was the fourth for you guys?
3:20
And even how big of a day was it
3:22
compared to Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
3:25
how big of a holiday? Yeah,
3:27
I mean, 4th of July was huge. So when I
3:29
was younger, I was living in right outside of St.
3:31
Louis, Missouri, and we lived in one of those cul-de-sacs
3:33
where the whole street, what all gets
3:35
together at, I remember our neighbor,
3:37
Charlie, and everybody would bring a dish
3:40
or two. The barbecue grill would be fired up. There'd
3:42
be some sort of like kiddie pool. We
3:44
weren't in some fancy neighborhood. There were no in-ground pools,
3:46
but we would take any body of water because it
3:48
was hot, hot, hot in St. Louis. And
3:51
yeah, just have fun. And I remember my mom
3:53
would let us drink unlimited amounts of grape and
3:55
orange soda. These are the things I remember. It
3:57
was chock full of sugar and then sparklers. Roman
4:00
candles at night. You know those fireworks
4:02
that make shift fireworks. Yeah, but what were
4:04
the main dishes? You said the grill would
4:06
be going. What did y'all eat for? Um
4:09
hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken,
4:12
like I remember drumsticks,
4:14
that kind of a thing. But
4:16
yeah, the basic stuff
4:18
that kids like to. Isn't that wild during
4:21
my growing up? Every
4:23
fourth was huge for us. Always at
4:25
my granddad's house. Granddad owned a barbecue
4:27
restaurant. Every dude in my family can
4:29
go on the grill. I do not
4:31
remember a single fourth in which I had a hamburger
4:33
or hot dog. It was ribs,
4:35
ribs, ribs, ribs, ribs, pork, full pork,
4:38
full pork all the time. I
4:40
say Memphis, Memphis, Memphis. That makes a lot of
4:42
sense. Not a single hot dog though I remember on
4:44
the fourth. Oh yeah, we ate a lot of hot dogs. I
4:46
don't think any of my, I, none
4:48
of them were grill masters like your dad. Like you
4:50
have to talk about the setup he has at his
4:52
house. It's, I've only seen pictures. I
4:54
haven't been there yet, but we're talking one grill
4:56
and basic stuff. You guys are like, like
4:59
grill masters. Well, I'm not, I didn't
5:01
get that. I didn't pick that up. But you know, I can
5:04
grab, I'm not a, I'm not a slow cooker. So I don't
5:06
know how to do ribs very well. And
5:08
all of that. I've gotten better at it recently. We
5:10
had a place here in town that we had a
5:12
grill. So you, I used to just practice. I would
5:14
just buy ribs to practice and
5:16
wasn't eating them. Right. I was
5:18
trying to push them on everybody who came in.
5:21
You guys want some ribs? We've got some great
5:23
ribs here more than we could possibly eat. But
5:25
I didn't get that skill, but yes, my
5:27
dad in the backyard in West Memphis right
5:29
now has at least six. And
5:31
he might be up to seven grills and
5:33
they're huge, huge couple of smokers back there.
5:36
You name it. He's got it. And he
5:38
uses all of them. They're not sitting in
5:40
a corner somewhere collecting dust. So these guys
5:42
can cook. And my granddad is the one
5:44
who was, like I said, he had a
5:46
barbecue joint, grew up around him. They would
5:48
every single holiday in time. They
5:51
would go to that grill at whatever five,
5:53
six in the morning, put stuff on all. I know
5:55
it at noon or one o'clock, everything was falling off
5:57
the bone. I don't know how it happened. the
6:00
patience for it at the time. Well, it's, I love
6:02
that you have that tradition and I love that
6:04
you've tried to pick it up and
6:06
you're very good at most things you cook and you got
6:08
better and better and better as you were practicing, but it
6:10
was so sweet to hear you on the phone with
6:12
your sister who apparently is a great griller too. It's not
6:15
just for the men in the family. Your
6:17
sister is a great griller. And yeah, it's just what
6:19
a great skill to have. How many people were you
6:22
feeding or was he feeding your dad, your granddad?
6:24
My dad has six brothers and
6:26
sisters. So all his uncles and
6:29
all those cousins would come. And
6:31
so you're talking easy, we could
6:33
have 50 people. But
6:35
this was, it was an automatic. We didn't have to call anybody a
6:37
few days, a few weeks or the month ahead of time and say,
6:39
where are we doing the fourth? You're at dad's
6:41
house for the fourth. What are you bringing? What
6:43
are you bringing? We know who's, where the meat's
6:46
coming from. So it was just,
6:48
who's bringing this, who's bringing that? There was not
6:51
a lot of jello casseroles. How
6:53
about potato salad? Potato salad? There
6:55
might've been one potato salad. Because we had a
6:58
lot of potato salad. No casseroles
7:00
for us. Yeah. We didn't do
7:02
casseroles. It was the German potato salad for us. What makes it
7:04
German? It's like a vinegar base with red onions.
7:06
I think you don't really like potatoes, but if you
7:08
were to like a potato salad, I think it might
7:10
be this one. Well, you make it for me tonight.
7:12
Okay, tonight? I'm
7:15
sorry, I didn't realize the prep it took. I thought we
7:17
were talking about the Fourth of July. Okay. Okay.
7:20
Okay. It's
7:29
cute you say that because I also, when we finally
7:31
moved down to Atlanta, where all my family had kind
7:33
of gathered and migrated from Michigan,
7:36
it was the same thing. We knew there was going to
7:38
be, we actually went to a park, Brisco Park, and
7:41
we got one of the grills that was already there. Like, you
7:43
know, they have those things at the park. And
7:45
we would just go to town all day. And
7:48
this is, oh, I went about to Debbie Downer you.
7:51
Don't do that. Well, I just, so
7:54
all of those traditions kind of fell
7:56
off because of one Fourth of July
7:58
when I was 14. Well,
8:02
no, I mean, it's actually really serious. Like, that's when my
8:04
parents got struck by lightning, and my uncle did too. So
8:07
it happened on the 4th of July. We were all
8:09
gathered at Briscoe Park, and it
8:11
changed the 4th of July for us. I'm
8:16
reacting a certain way because I've heard the story 50
8:18
times. Everybody else in the room are
8:21
going like, what the hell is going on? So
8:24
go ahead. I'll say it. So the
8:26
4th of July is always, I am aware of thunderstorms.
8:29
It always makes me a little nervous because it was
8:31
a very dramatic thing. But my parents and my mom
8:33
and dad got seriously
8:35
injured. They were in the hospital for weeks. My mom
8:37
was in the hospital for weeks. My dad was in
8:39
the ICU, but their tennis shoes got blown off of
8:42
their feet. Their clothes
8:44
had to be cut off of them.
8:46
My dad had to have
8:48
CPR performed on him. And my uncle Jack
8:50
actually ultimately died. He was up against the
8:52
tree that hit, and
8:55
my parents were blown standing next to him,
8:57
and he just crumbled. So yes, lightning kills,
8:59
and the 4th of July is one of
9:01
those holidays where everybody's out and about, and
9:04
it tends to be a thunderstorm heavy holiday.
9:06
So yes, things in my house changed
9:08
after that. And I
9:10
kind of got into a habit of traveling around the
9:13
4th of July. I haven't even been in the country
9:16
during the 4th of July for many, many years, but we're going
9:18
to for the first time this year. Well,
9:21
still up in the air. Well, we're gonna be
9:23
in the country. Still up in
9:25
the air. Both
9:27
of my daughters are continuing the tradition and are gonna
9:29
be out of the country on the 4th of July.
9:32
Sabine is probably gonna be with us. But we got Sabine.
9:35
What are we gonna do? We're
9:37
looking at a couple of, the fireworks display here in
9:39
town is actually quite nice, but
9:41
we're also considered getting to a lake, getting
9:43
a boat, doing something else, and
9:45
just getting out of town. I kind of want to be out of New York for
9:47
the 4th, but the fireworks display
9:50
is awesome. It's awesome, but we can
9:53
find other fireworks displays. They're all around and
9:55
they're fun, and you can even, I like
9:57
sparklers. Be careful, they still can be dangerous,
9:59
but I like. sparklers what what I don't think
10:01
I read the warning on the package of sparklers
10:03
what happens with the sparklers well you dangerous I
10:06
need to be aware I guess if you hold
10:08
on to them for too long yeah and
10:10
then the little sparks I don't think it's
10:13
like dangerous but they could ignite something else
10:15
I guess so just parental supervision is certainly
10:17
a part of it Wow you are just
10:19
doing a full-on public service I am I
10:21
am but no but fight like there are
10:23
so many cautionary tales of people doing their
10:26
own fireworks displays so from Mother Nature to
10:28
human error it's always good to remember that
10:30
we want to be safe above them beyond
10:32
everything else would you like to give people
10:34
grilling tips no I would not that is
10:37
not my love no safety wise safety wise
10:39
not have it inside make sure you don't
10:41
ignite while it's inside or in even in
10:43
the garage right yes what else correct I
10:45
don't know I don't use the grill very
10:47
often what about pool and water safe stop
10:50
we're all adults in this room right now
10:52
no but I told you
10:54
I was gonna be a little bit of a Debbie doubter
10:56
sorry would you like to let people know that alcohol consumption
10:58
on the 4th of July yeah should
11:01
probably keep to a minimum all of those
11:03
things were all very important to remember
11:05
yes and certainly don't drive after no
11:07
I didn't know the episode was going to
11:09
be about how to stay safe for
11:11
the fourth I
11:13
digress you know I tend to go off
11:15
in tangent sometimes and honestly I didn't know
11:18
I was gonna even say any of those
11:20
things they just came out sorry I apologize
11:22
if that just was a downer and also
11:24
people should overeat I hear you should use
11:26
smaller plates yeah because that helps you with
11:28
portion control on holidays good tip TJ I'm
11:30
serious a woman's only that live in an
11:32
interview once on the air and I I
11:36
laughed at her the problem is the other day
11:38
I was just actually when we got in here
11:40
I was talking about overeating and I had a
11:42
small plate the problem is I made six trips
11:44
back to fill my small plate up until I
11:47
could eat no more I
11:49
think you're probably in a really good mood
11:52
because you're able to talk about I don't
11:54
know why this stuff is coming out because
11:56
you are in a great mood today and
11:59
our way to the studio everything's fine but
12:01
No, I'm sure people will appreciate this episode
12:03
of the podcast. We are thinking about doing
12:05
more right into us. How
12:08
else you would like us to help you stay safe as
12:11
you go about your life. And
12:14
next week, crossing busy streets.
12:17
I don't know what we do. We
12:21
just want everybody to have a happy Fourth of July.
12:23
And we found this fun fact
12:25
out. You were asking how many years
12:27
our country has been celebrating. And
12:30
it turns out we're about to embark
12:32
on a pretty big milestone. This is
12:34
year 248. So
12:37
2026 will be 250 years. And
12:41
I'm sure we'll have a huge celebration.
12:43
We should plan that now. Yes, because
12:45
as big as that one's gonna be,
12:47
we probably need to double down on
12:50
our safety episodes. All
12:53
right, I hope everyone out there has a
12:55
happy and of course safe Fourth of July.
12:57
We're gonna take a couple of days off
12:59
to enjoy. But thank you for listening. And
13:02
you can always catch us on Instagram at
13:04
ABNTJ podcast for now. Happy
13:06
Fourth, everyone. And turn. footours
