6:00
started trying to crack arguments between her
6:02
and her friends and slowly
6:04
started isolating her so
6:06
that he became the single
6:08
most important thing in her life. Tell
6:12
us how he got away with the online video calls.
6:14
He used his own son. He used
6:16
his own son for the voice on the other end
6:19
of the phone. He used his own son for the
6:21
boy on video. And so he
6:23
created this whole persona and he created his
6:25
own son to fill that persona, so
6:29
that she genuinely thought he was talking to a
6:31
teenage boy, as did I. So
6:34
slowly but surely, this
6:37
Brandon persona introduced his father
6:40
and wanted us to
6:42
meet and talk. And
6:44
so I talked to him on the phone and
6:46
he just sounded like an average everyday dad with
6:49
sons. There was nothing out of the
6:51
ordinary. It was
6:53
just like meeting any other
6:56
parent at a school or
6:59
meeting her other friend's parents. And then as
7:01
time went by, he started
7:04
talking to Carly online as well
7:06
with the persona of Brandon.
7:09
So I have no idea how he
7:11
managed this, but I do know he
7:13
made multiple fake profiles to
7:16
convince us that Brandon was
7:18
real. So he made a
7:20
fake profile of Brandon's so-called brother,
7:23
friends. He
7:25
created this extraordinary web
7:27
of lies to entrap
7:29
her and to essentially
7:31
deceive me. So
7:34
anyway, he contacted and called and said
7:36
that he was coming through Adelaide and
7:38
he would love to drop some presents
7:41
off for Carly's birthday and that
7:43
Brandon wouldn't be able to come because he had prior
7:46
engagement and he really wanted his
7:48
dad to drop off these presents for Carly.
7:51
Carly was so excited and I said, well, I
7:53
don't really want him coming to our house or meeting
7:56
him in the main street of our town. We met
7:58
him in the main street of our house. of
8:00
our town and I
8:02
took his ID, the
8:06
license plate and everything like that just to be sure.
8:09
And then after conversation he
8:11
came back to our place, interacted
8:14
with my entire family. So
8:16
he was around for a couple of days and
8:18
the mask slipped at some stage, didn't it? Yeah,
8:21
it was just that when Brandon would call,
8:23
so it must have been his son who
8:25
was calling, he was
8:27
very heavily involved in, I
8:29
was noticing that he was
8:32
really interactive between Carly and
8:34
Brandon. And there
8:36
was one point where Gary said to
8:38
Carly, oh, Brandon's on the phone for
8:40
me. She said, not now, it's my
8:42
birthday party I'll call him later. And
8:44
he got really mad. And I saw
8:46
him physically get furious
8:48
in the hallway. And I was
8:52
like, okay, something is not right here.
8:54
Sort of my mumma alert went off.
8:57
I told him to leave, he
8:59
got really angry and grabbed some
9:01
stuff. And that was a point where
9:03
I felt unsafe. He
9:06
left and I sat down and
9:08
explained to Carly, there
9:10
is something off with this man. I
9:12
don't know what it is, but something
9:14
is really concerning me. I'm really sorry,
9:16
but you're not going to be able
9:18
to have any more conversations or communication
9:21
with Brandon and his father. And
9:23
I took her phone away from her when she
9:25
wasn't looking at it, actually hit it. And
9:28
that was the end of that, as far as
9:30
I was concerned. What I didn't
9:32
realise is that, of course, then he would
9:35
continue to call on the landline when I
9:37
was at home. Ultimately,
9:39
you know, he kept
9:41
that connection going. And he would
9:44
post, he posted things like telephone
9:47
credit and things like that. How
9:50
long was Carly
9:52
secretly still in touch with
9:54
Brandon? It was like literally because her
9:56
birthday was on the 31st of January and
9:58
she was married on February. the 20th.
10:01
So do you think Newman sort
10:03
of sensed that he was losing her
10:05
through you and really stepped up? Yeah
10:07
well to in his words to
10:10
his son that was included in the
10:12
trial that he wanted to fix her
10:14
up. You know he in his sick
10:16
twisted mind you know obviously
10:18
he wanted to sexually abuse
10:21
Carly and when she rejected him
10:23
and didn't want him her focus
10:25
was obviously the son
10:27
not a 50 year
10:30
old man then he was
10:32
infuriated and asked both of
10:34
his sons to help him. One son said
10:36
no the other said okay let's
10:38
go and so they jumped in a
10:40
vehicle and came to South Australia. And
10:44
told Carly that Brandon was coming
10:46
that she was finally gonna meet
10:48
Brandon Kane in person. Yep yep
10:50
and not to tell mum. Don't
10:53
tell mum we're having a fight
10:55
don't worry we'll sort things out with you mum
10:58
but you know Brandon obviously said
11:00
he really wanted to see her and and you know
11:02
we'll figure it out with your mum after but come
11:05
and meet us. She came to
11:07
me she said mum I want to go and meet my friends down
11:09
in the city you know so I
11:11
gave her some money and I said okay that's
11:13
fine. She said I might stay at my friend's
11:15
house I'll let you know. She had
11:17
her phone I'll let you know what happened so
11:20
I'll talk to her mum and dad. I'm like
11:22
okay no worries. So you know I had no
11:24
idea it was just the same old thing
11:27
that would just happen all the time and
11:30
she just ran off to Veranda and said love
11:32
you you know just happy go lucky you know
11:35
and I said love you too and that was
11:37
the last we spoke to each other yeah
11:39
that was the last time I saw
11:42
my daughter alive. She
11:44
went down to the
11:46
bus stop and they picked her, Gary knew me
11:49
and their son picked him up in their vehicle
11:51
and they drove I'm not sure where they went
11:53
but they ended up in Port Elliot which
11:56
was our sort of family beach and
11:59
they were seen
12:01
on CCTV footage
12:04
walking around that coastal town.
12:07
Carly obviously felt safe there because,
12:09
you know, her grandmother lived there.
12:13
And, you know, at some
12:15
point they attacked her and
12:18
suffocated her and threw her into the
12:20
ocean, hoping I
12:22
guess that she'd be taken out to sea and
12:24
never found. But the tide
12:26
brought her back very, very quickly to shore
12:29
and she was found the next morning
12:32
by a person walking past
12:35
who tried to revive her, but it
12:37
was far, far too late for that.

We wondered the same thing. So we
14:48
made BiHeart, a better formula for formula. Learn
14:51
more at biheart.com. How
14:57
long did it take you after you lost
14:59
Carly to think of him? Like
15:02
was it obvious? It was the only person
15:04
that it could have been. You
15:06
know, he was trying to say it wasn't premeditated.
15:08
Well, of course it was. There were gloves that
15:11
he used. And I mean, it was very premeditated
15:13
for his son to dye his
15:15
hair. So he looked like Brandon,
15:17
you know, the perfect Brandon and
15:20
present himself to Carly in that way. You
15:23
know, the details, and I'm not going to go into them
15:25
all because it's really difficult for me and I don't want
15:28
to sit in that trauma. It's
15:31
not healthy for me. But
15:33
what I will say is the details were
15:35
absolutely shocking. The evidence, and you can imagine
15:37
if it took them three years to gather
15:40
enough, like all the evidence for the trial,
15:42
you can imagine what came to light. It
15:44
was horrific. And then
15:46
of course, once we went to trial, it was about
15:48
three months. Unfortunately
15:50
his son was acquitted because of all the
15:52
evidence pointed to the father, Gary Newman, and
15:55
the son's full admission wasn't included
15:57
in the trial because he wasn't
15:59
legally represented at the time of his admission.
16:03
However, Gary knew he was sentenced to
16:05
life imprisonment with a 29 year
16:07
non parole period. And you
16:10
said his son went on to offend? So,
16:12
you know, everybody thought that, you know, the
16:14
poor son and, you know,
16:16
it was all the dad that coerced him into
16:18
being part of it because he was only 17
16:20
at the time, or no. And
16:22
he went on to rape 13 girls
16:24
under the age of 16 in
16:26
Victoria and received a 35
16:29
month sentence. 35 months? There
16:32
was nothing I can do about it because his
16:34
name is suppressed. He
16:36
was acquitted of Carly's murder. So that is
16:38
something that I've had to hand over to
16:40
detectives. So,
16:42
yes, she suffered horribly. That's
16:46
something that I have to live
16:48
with for the rest of my life. And
16:52
one of the reasons why I do what
16:54
I do now, because I've seen the suffering,
16:56
you know, I had to identify her, I
16:58
saw the suffering in her body and
17:00
it was horrific. And so,
17:02
you know, the idea of that happening to another
17:05
innocent child, to, you know, a
17:07
child that's just looking for connection and
17:09
love online is something that,
17:11
you know, I just
17:14
can't, you know, sit back and do
17:16
nothing about. The
17:19
foundation is amazing. The Carly
17:21
Ryan Foundation. I
17:23
mean, your energy has yielded real
17:25
results. Thankfully, you know, I
17:27
think again, people underestimate the
17:29
power of love and
17:32
that's really what's driven her legacy. And,
17:35
you know, so we incorporated the Carly Ryan
17:37
Foundation in 2010 and
17:39
just proceeded to create an
17:42
education program, a national education
17:44
program to create
17:46
awareness around this crime type and
17:49
to teach students and parents how to
17:51
be safe online, essentially.
17:53
And it's just really grown and evolved.
17:55
And I've been really involved in, you
17:58
know, the very first CyberSafe program. of
18:00
December in Canberra. And
18:02
then slowly but surely, things
18:04
started to move and more and more
18:07
legislative amendments started to happen then. And
18:10
then of course, we came up with
18:12
Carly's Law, which essentially makes an offence
18:14
for a person to misrepresent their age
18:16
and identity to a minor online under
18:18
the age of 16 and
18:21
prepare to meet with them. So,
18:23
you know, that was really important. You know,
18:25
we have fraud laws in the community. So
18:28
for a person to falsify their identity
18:30
and age to a minor online is
18:33
fraud. And so it should be
18:35
a criminal offence. So what
18:38
do we do? What do we do as parents
18:40
if we suspect that our child is
18:42
talking to somebody online who is not who
18:44
they are saying they are? What number do
18:47
we call? What website? Where do we go to report
18:49
that, to try and have that looked
18:51
into? How does it work? Well, of
18:54
course you can come to the Carly
18:56
Ryan Foundation at info at carlyryanfoundation.com and
18:58
we can support. Also
19:01
esafety.gov.au, really
19:03
good resource for the Australian community.
19:06
Lots of great information and
19:08
reporting mechanisms, as well
19:11
as the Australian Centre to Counter Child
19:13
Exploitation, so there's ACE, A-C-C-C-E.gov.au.
19:18
And they would be the top reporting mechanisms
19:20
for these crime types. And what I would
19:23
say is, you know, make
19:25
sure you're saying to your kids, hey, there's nothing that's
19:27
ever so bad online that you can't come to me.
19:29
I'm not just gonna cut the internet off. We'll
19:32
work on this together and figure out a solution
19:34
on what we need to do. Because often kids
19:36
just want it, you know, for it to go
19:38
away and to move on. And
19:40
that's the biggest problem, is when we
19:42
have kids that don't feel confident to
19:44
come to their parents or their carers,
19:47
or the people, the adults in their life. So we
19:49
need to make sure they've got someone they can open
19:51
up to. And that person isn't
19:53
gonna respond in anger, but is
19:55
gonna respond in, okay, let's make a plan. What can we
19:58
do here? And if I don't know what to do, do,
20:00
then we're going to go to somebody who
20:02
can, like the Carly Ryan Foundation, like the
20:04
Office of the Safety Commissioner, like the ACE.
