0:40

Ernest Lundin, sixty two years old,

0:42

had been onboard that flight and he

0:45

was among the dead. A

0:47

sitting US senator gone

0:49

in an instant

0:51

In a plane crash that from the very

0:54

starved was a real mystery.

0:56

Why did

0:57

this plane go down with these experienced

0:59

pilots and a seemingly good airplane and

1:01

a storm that planes go through.

1:05

The plane that rashed was a

1:08

new DC3 It was in perfect

1:10

repair. It had passed all its checks.

1:12

Pennsylvania Central Airlines had

1:14

never had crash in its entire history

1:16

as an airline. The pilot was very

1:18

experienced. He had a spotless record.

1:21

There was a federal investigation. by

1:23

the Civil aeronautics board. That

1:25

investigation found that while there was bad

1:27

weather, there was thunder and lightning and some heavy

1:29

rainfall in the area, there was nothing

1:32

so unusual about the storm that

1:34

the plane shouldn't have been cleared to

1:36

fly. The investigation found

1:38

that there was no evidence of a fire

1:40

on board the plane, no evidence

1:41

of an explosion. There was no

1:43

evidence

1:43

that the plane had been struck by lightning.

1:46

Its engines certainly weren't knocked

1:48

out. Witnesses say in fact, they

1:50

heard the engines roaring full tilt

1:53

right up until the moment of impact. And

1:55

all of a sudden, All

1:57

we heard was that's

2:00

when it news, Dave.

2:02

The

2:02

aeronautics board port concluded

2:05

that the multiple witnesses who described

2:07

abnormally loud roaring engines

2:09

right at the time of the crash, Those

2:11

witnesses were onto something. The

2:13

two engines of the DC3 had

2:15

been at wide open full throttle

2:18

when the plane slammed into the ground. The

2:20

board also concluded that neither the pilot

2:23

nor the co pilot were actively

2:25

controlling the plane when it crashed.

2:27

The report said it is possible that

2:29

for some reason the pilot and co pilot

2:32

were prevented from effectively operating

2:34

the controls. That's what

2:36

the report said, prevent it from effectively

2:38

operating the controls. Prevent

2:41

it by what When

2:43

Lundin's secretary raced to the

2:45

scene of the crash that afternoon to learn the fate

2:47

of her boss, one report from

2:49

the time says she met a a policeman

2:52

at the scene of the crash who told her something

2:54

strange. He told

2:56

her there was a fight onboard

2:58

the plane. Now, of course,

3:00

there were no survivors of the crash

3:02

to tell anyone anything about what had happened

3:05

onboard the plane. But that's

3:07

supposed report from the policeman, it

3:09

was not a totally incongruous detail.

3:11

In fact, the senator's secretary herself

3:14

have reportedly witnessed something along those

3:16

same lines. When she dropped

3:18

her boss at the airfield for the flight,

3:20

the senator secretary according to some

3:22

accounts had noticed through the open

3:25

doorway of the plane that

3:27

something was happening between

3:29

the passengers. Some of the passengers

3:31

were locked in a struggle of some

3:33

kind. And it looked to her like

3:35

her boss, senator

3:36

Lundin, might have even been

3:37

among the people involved in that

3:40

struggle. but she couldn't be entirely sure.

3:43

The reports of a possible physical altercation

3:45

among the passengers on the plane those

3:48

reports would never be fully verified.

3:51

And the mystery of what caused that crash,

3:54

that mystery has endured We

3:56

still don't know what caused it. We certainly

3:58

don't know if something weird happening between

4:00

the passengers brought the plane

4:02

down. But there was even more

4:05

that was strange about trip nineteen

4:07

as it came to be known, including

4:10

who else was on board along with senator

4:12

Lundin when the plane crashed. And

4:15

what exactly the senator was carrying with

4:17

it when he stepped onboard that flight?

4:20

Why was he so upset before he got

4:22

on board? That one we think we

4:24

know. And it only

4:26

makes the mystery of the plane's crash

4:28

all the more confounded.
