Hello folks . Well , the
0:04
old jarhead is back again , survived
0:07
another week and I'm here to
0:10
give you some great career
0:12
advice , career advice that is guaranteed
0:15
to help you and
0:17
listen up and get
0:20
ready to learn . So my
0:23
manager who happens to
0:25
be my wife recently
0:27
came across a couple of articles about
0:29
silos and she said
0:32
well , old jarhead , you ought to do
0:34
a podcast about these things
0:36
. And I well
0:38
, I've been around
0:40
enough to know that when she suggests
0:42
things , I'd better do them . So that's
0:45
what we're talking about now silos
0:47
. So , for those of you who
0:49
do not know , silos are tall
0:51
structures on farms that are used
0:53
to hold grain , and
0:55
a thing about a silo is that nothing
0:58
gets in and nothing gets out unless
1:00
there's a real effort made to do it . So
1:03
, on a farm , a cow can move from one field
1:05
to another without much problem , but the grains
1:07
from one silo can't get
1:10
into another without a whole lot of work
1:12
. So you're going okay . So
1:14
what does this have to do with me ? Unless
1:17
your career involves farming , you don't care
1:19
, right ? Nope , silos
1:22
exist in businesses all the time
1:24
. In fact , many executives
1:26
of large and small businesses spend
1:29
a considerable amount of time breaking them
1:31
down . So now you say okay
1:33
, get it there . Old jarhead . Tell me
1:35
more about this silo thing . Well
1:46
, one type of silo is where there are multiple divisions in a company
1:48
and little information gets passed between them unless a real effort is
1:50
made to make it happen . Things like what are you working on and what sort of
1:52
new stuff you got going on ? What are you buying
1:54
? Different
1:57
parts of the company may not have any clue
1:59
what another part of the company is doing
2:02
. Another type of silo could be
2:04
between those who work on the company
2:07
site and those who work remotely , and
2:10
you may find that there's some information
2:12
that's just not being shared
2:14
. So look around where you
2:16
work . Do you see any silos ? Maybe
2:19
you already noticed them but did not know what to call
2:21
them . Yep , they're silos . I
2:24
saw it all the time in the defense world . The
2:26
higher you go in that hierarchy , the more
2:28
silos exist , especially
2:31
at the Pentagon , where I spent three years
2:33
. Some of that's because
2:35
of classifications and that's kind of understandable
2:38
. Others are because of the
2:40
competition for limited resources
2:42
, and I've
2:44
been part of efforts that were marginally
2:47
successful in breaking them down . But
2:49
if you're not careful , they seem to grow
2:51
back again . In
2:53
my last position in the corporate
2:56
world . I think that we were pretty good at cross-division
2:58
work , but the bigger the company got
3:00
, the harder it was to eliminate silos
3:03
. So you say , why should
3:05
you care ? Well , here's the
3:07
deal . What's going on in
3:09
other parts of the company , those
3:11
other silos may be very
3:14
interesting to you , but if you're
3:16
not even aware of those things , you can't
3:18
get involved . I found
3:20
that some of my best employees were very
3:23
good at looking across the division
3:25
and even doing work across the division . This
3:27
increased their awareness of what was going
3:30
on within the company and it also increased
3:32
their skill sets , their professional
3:34
experiences . Skill
3:40
sets , their professional experiences . Now , if you're a manager , then you need to be looking
3:42
out for these silos and making every effort to knock them down . Sharing
3:45
information is great , but you need
3:47
to take it one step further and make an effort
3:49
by , let's say , offering one of your good
3:51
employees to help out another
3:53
business unit . And
3:56
one last tip
3:58
good tip here for managers and employees
4:00
is the value of things like volunteering
4:03
and social functions . Things
4:05
like team sports increase
4:07
the communication and awareness between
4:09
silos . This is
4:11
a great way to do it , and I'll give a
4:13
nod out here to Mary who volunteered
4:16
for the picnic and sent
4:18
up the picnic and just got
4:20
her name all over right up to the CEO
4:22
. So , and
4:24
wrapping it up , silos exist everywhere
4:27
and , for the sake of the organization
4:29
and for the employees
4:32
, they need to be broken down
4:34
, starting at the bottom but going
4:36
all the way up to the top . Well
4:39
, that's it for now . That's
4:46
my podcast for this week . Lots of good information . These things are short , but if you want a
4:48
longer version , check out my book . Find a Job that Fits
4:50
your Life . I guarantee it . And
4:53
thanks for listening . Bye
4:55
, thank you , thank
5:49
you
5:55
.
