Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production

0:05

of iHeartRadio. Good

0:09

Morning, This is Laura.

0:12

Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.

0:15

Today's tip is to write

0:18

a review. If

0:20

you have a special small business in your

0:22

life, your positive

0:24

reviews really can make a difference.

0:28

So take two minutes to write one

0:30

and you will help that business out a

0:33

lot. Given

0:35

how prevalent online reviews are these

0:38

days, it is hard to believe

0:40

that thirty years ago they just weren't

0:42

a thing. If you wanted

0:45

to find a good pizza place near you,

0:47

you had to ask people, read

0:50

reviews in local newspapers or magazines

0:52

if you could find them, or look in

0:54

the phone book to see the advertisements

0:57

and just guess based on the menus and such

1:00

what you would think. Now,

1:03

of course, anyone under the sun can

1:05

review anything, and

1:07

that is great in some ways, but

1:10

it also gives the cranky folks

1:12

among us quite a lot of power.

1:16

That's because most people don't

1:18

bother to write reviews. We're

1:21

busy. Even if we liked

1:23

a restaurant, or a hair salon or a retail

1:25

store, we are unlikely

1:27

to sit down at our computers and formulate

1:29

a review. And if we are

1:32

modestly unhappy, we

1:34

tend not to write a review saying that either. I

1:37

can see this in the statistics for let's

1:39

say a show like this one with

1:42

more than a million downloads every month, only

1:45

a few people leave reviews on

1:47

the major podcast sites. That

1:50

is just the way life works. But

1:53

the fact that most people don't write

1:55

reviews can wind up being

1:57

a problem given that nuh

2:00

thing moves people to action like

2:02

anger. So if

2:04

your really great local pizza

2:06

place has an off night, running

2:10

short on certain items, or if maybe too

2:12

many staff members have called out sick,

2:15

you can get a one star review, staying

2:18

as the most prominent one on Yelp

2:20

or other places for a long

2:22

time for months.

2:25

When people look for a pizza place, they

2:27

are going to see that one star

2:30

review. Now, I am

2:32

not saying the restaurant didn't deserve

2:34

a one star review for that person's experience.

2:38

The problem is context.

2:41

That is far from the only experience

2:43

people have at that particular restaurant. It

2:46

is just that the vast majority of people

2:49

don't write reviews. But

2:52

if anyone can write reviews,

2:54

then you can become the sort of person who

2:57

writes reviews. So

2:59

why not take a few minutes to write

3:01

positive reviews for the small businesses

3:04

in your life. If

3:06

you eat somewhere frequently, you

3:08

obviously like it enough to be a

3:11

repeat customer. So

3:13

take a few minutes and write a review saying

3:15

that It really doesn't

3:18

have to be elaborate. You

3:20

can just say something like I order

3:22

from here every Tuesday. I

3:24

especially love the chicken enchiladas and

3:27

the salsa is always great. Or

3:30

if you shop at a local boutique right great

3:32

selection and owner Casey

3:34

is always friendly and helpful, highly

3:37

recommended. When you are looking for a special outfit,

3:41

just write it and post it. That's

3:43

really all there is to it. Then,

3:46

when people are looking for a Mexican

3:48

restaurant or a special occasion boutique,

3:51

your review will appear alongside

3:53

whatever random or cranky person got

3:55

inspired to write by something going wrong.

3:59

You just might get it's someone else to

4:01

try out one of your favorite spots.

4:04

Lots of small businesses could use the

4:06

business. This is

4:09

a great way to support them

4:13

in the meantime. This is Laura.

4:16

4:18
