Welcome to brain Stuff from how Stuff Works,
0:06
Hey, brain Stuff Lauren vogelbamb here. Apple
0:08
cider vinegar has been making these social media
0:11
rounds as the weight loss cure to jure. Maybe
0:13
you've seen videos of dr Oz touting the
0:15
health benefits of apple cider vinegar, or of
0:18
YouTubers claiming to have shed ten pounds
0:20
of belly fat in just seven days by drinking apple
0:22
cider vinegar cocktails before meals. Even
0:25
if we know, the health claim sound too good
0:27
to be true. For anyone who struggles
0:29
with their health and body image as it relates to
0:31
their body weight, it can be tempting to try
0:33
any weight loss regimen that's so cheap, all
0:36
natural, and seemingly effortless.
0:38
So what's the deal? Can apple cider
0:40
vinegar really help you lose weight? First?
0:43
A quick explainer on apple cider vinegar
0:46
versus other types of vinegar. The active
0:48
ingredient in all vinegar is acetic acid.
0:50
Most of the vinegars we commonly eat or cook
0:53
with a white vinegar, red wine vinegar, balsamic,
0:55
and apple cider contain between five
0:58
and six percent acetic acid, though
1:00
mild rice vinegar can be as low as two
1:02
to four percent. When people talk
1:04
about the health benefits of apple cider vinegar,
1:07
they're really talking about the health benefits
1:09
of having more acetic acid in your diet.
1:11
You could consume any vinegar to get the same
1:13
effect, but the relatively mild and
1:15
sweet flavor of apple cider vinegar is
1:17
more palatable barely when mixed
1:20
into a beverage, which has boosted its
1:22
popularity. Plus, there are
1:24
several brands of raw, organic, unfiltered,
1:26
and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar that
1:28
have achieved a cult following for their purported
1:31
health benefits. But what
1:33
does the research say. We spoke
1:35
with Deborah Murphy, a registered dietitian
1:37
in Chicago, who says the current scientific
1:40
research on the weight loss benefits of apple cider
1:42
vinegar is limited, although
1:44
there have been a handful of small studies that make
1:46
a case for this health remedy. Several
1:49
animal studies showed that doses of acetic
1:51
acid seemed to suppress the accumulation
1:53
of body fat in mice that were fed
1:55
high fat diets. The biggest
1:58
human study to date from fourteen followed
2:00
the progress of a hundred and seventy five obese
2:02
adults in Japan. Some of whom were
2:04
given a beverage containing one or two tablespoons
2:07
that's fifteen or thirty million liters of apple
2:09
cider vinegar every day with their meals,
2:12
and some who were not. After
2:14
twelve weeks, the folks who drank a little vinegar
2:16
every day lost two to four pounds that's
2:19
one to two kilograms, compared to no statistical
2:21
improvements in the group who did not drink the
2:23
vinegar. Low and slow decreases
2:25
in weight are definitely the safest and healthiest
2:28
way to lose weight, but only losing
2:30
two to four pounds over three months that's a third
2:32
of a pound a week hardly qualifies as
2:34
a secret weight loss cure, as some claim
2:37
apple cider vinegar to be. Other
2:39
much smaller studies have linked apple cider
2:41
vinegar to slowing down gastric emptying,
2:44
which is the time it takes for food to move
2:46
from the stomach to these small intestine. In
2:48
an experiment involving just ten people
2:50
with type one diabetes, the folks who drank
2:53
a little apple cider vinegar each day kept
2:55
food in their stomach longer, and their stomach
2:57
size also swelled more after eating a
2:59
meal. Both of these findings support
3:01
the idea that apple cider vinegar could help you feel
3:04
fuller and stay fuller longer, although
3:06
the scientific proof there is still modest,
3:10
Murphy said, Unfortunately, there is
3:12
still no single food that holds the secret
3:14
to weight loss. Despite what many on the Internet
3:17
may say about apple cider vinegar, the
3:19
only way to achieve and sustain weight
3:21
loss is the same thing you've likely heard a hundred
3:23
times before. Eat healthy and move
3:26
your body. Even if apple
3:28
cider vinegar isn't the cure all it's sometimes
3:30
cracked up to be, it can still be part of a healthy
3:32
diet and lifestyle. There's even promising
3:35
research underway about apple cider vinegar
3:37
and insulin response. A small study
3:39
did show that vinegar can significantly improve
3:41
insulin sensitivity in diabetic
3:44
and pre diabetic patients after a high
3:46
carb meal. We
3:48
also spoke with Cynthia Sass, a performance
3:50
nutritionist based in New York and Los Angeles,
3:53
who warns against drinking apple cider vinegar
3:55
straight because the acetic acid can wear
3:57
away tooth, enamel, and even burn the esophic
4:00
guess. If you want to give apple
4:02
cider vinegar beverages a try, Sauce
4:04
recommends swirling two teaspoons. That's
4:06
about nine millilaters of apple cider vinegar,
4:08
plus a teaspoon about four point five
4:10
millilaters of honey, and a cup of warm
4:12
water once a day, but she
4:14
says don't go overboard on the quantity or
4:17
frequency. There's
4:19
also no reason that apple cider vinegar has
4:21
to be imbibed in order to access any
4:23
potential health benefits. Murphy
4:25
suggests working it into your existing recipes,
4:28
making a vinegrette for your salads at Tanging
4:31
cole Slaw, a marinade for chicken or fish,
4:33
or adding some to sauteed greens to give them
4:35
a punch. Today's
4:41
episode was written by Dave Ruse and produced by
4:43
Tyler Clay. For more on this and lots
