this is the second episode of Season 14.

2:05

Before we get into it, let's break

2:07

that ice. The show's first opening icebreaker

2:47

case was requested by Karen Leslie

2:50

Gilbert via messenger. We're

2:52

in the South Wales town of Pontypool

2:54

this week, located in the county borough

2:56

of Torvine. It's located

2:58

8 miles north of Newport, 16 miles

3:00

northeast of Cardiff and 126 miles west

3:04

of London. Here are

3:06

5 quickfire facts about Pontypool. Pontypool

3:10

is regarded as an industrial town

3:12

with former industries including iron and

3:15

steel production, coal mining and the

3:17

growth of the railways. Pontypool

3:21

Park is home to a dry

3:23

ski slope, the shell grotto and

3:25

the folly tower. On

3:28

the second Saturday in July every

3:30

year, a family fun event takes

3:32

place at Pontypool Park. Party

3:35

3:37

features vintage games, live bands performing,

3:40

an artisan village and so much

3:42

more. If

4:00

poets. At number

4:02

5, Pontipul Community Council has

4:04

official twinning partnerships with three

4:06

European towns. L'Enchement

4:09

in France, Breton in

4:11

Germany and Condeishe in

4:13

Portugal. According to the 2021

4:16

census, the estimated population of Pontipul

4:18

was 29,062. The

4:23

similarities between our story this week

4:26

and that of last week are

4:28

truly astronomical. I didn't

4:30

set out to cover something so similar

4:32

this week, however I'm glad it worked

4:34

out that way based on them shocking

4:36

statistics I read out in the previous

4:38

episode about homicide victims over the age

4:40

of 60. Like

4:42

Anne James whose story I covered last week,

4:45

Linda Maggs was a 74 year old woman

4:47

with an ever growing family who loved

4:49

her dealer. She was a

4:52

mother, a sister, a grandma, even

4:54

a great grandma. According

4:56

to Linda Brooke Banks on March 3rd 1946 to

5:00

her parents, Alfred and Nellie, she was

5:02

raised initially in the town of Leighton

5:04

in East London. One

5:06

of four children, Linda no doubt

5:08

had a busy yet exciting childhood.

5:11

With her parents owning a shoe shop, the

5:13

home they lived in was located right above

5:15

it so you can imagine some of the

5:17

hijinks the kids likely got up to. The

5:20

customers were no doubt very familiar with each of

5:22

them. Attending school

5:25

just like her siblings, Linda went on

5:27

to secure a job working in a

5:29

nearby sewing factory. Personality

5:31

wise, Linda was a fun loving girl

5:33

who loved nothing more than heading out

5:35

to places where she could take part

5:38

in her beloved rock and roll dancing

5:40

hobby. She would later

5:42

look back and reminisce about those early

5:44

years claiming to have rubbed shoulders with

5:46

many who would go on to become

5:48

60s music legends. They

5:50

were unknowns at the time which

5:52

only served to add further allure

5:54

to Linda's already magical stories. At

5:57

some point, likely during those late teenage years, Linda was

5:59

a young girl who was a young years, she met

6:01

the person who would go on to become her first

6:04

husband, Alan Meinerhan. Connecting instantly,

6:06

the pair's relationship soon blossomed and

6:08

when they subsequently tied the knot,

6:10

a move to Kent was on

6:12

the cards. Settling

6:14

in a caravan site in the counter,

6:16

they remained living there for around six

6:19

months before deciding to move somewhere more

6:21

permanent. Securing a

6:23

new build property in the district of

6:25

Fairwater, in Cumbran, in Torvine, the couple

6:27

packed their bags and prepared to make

6:29

the 174 mile journey west to what

6:31

they believed would be

6:35

their forever home. That

6:37

same year, the couple welcomed their first

6:39

child to the world, a baby boy

6:41

whom they named Andrew, with Kerry, the

6:44

couple's second and final child, being born

6:46

three years after that in 1971. It's

6:49

not clear as to why, but Linda and Alan

6:51

would go on to separate in 1974, resulting

6:55

in the former becoming a single mother.

6:58

Raising two kids was a tough ask,

7:00

but one Linda not only did well,

7:02

but thrived at. She has

7:04

been described by her children as being not

7:06

just an amazing mum, but also a great

7:08

friend who was always there, just a phone

7:11

call away, should they or any of Linda's

7:13

friends need advice or a listening ear. Those

7:16

who are fortunate enough to have had

7:18

the pleasure of knowing her, have gone

7:21

on record stating that she is sorely

7:23

missed, such was her kind heart, affable

7:25

nature and endearing persona. Apart

7:28

from the rock and roll dancing, Linda

7:30

enjoyed going shopping, something she did with

7:32

her sister frequently, as well as gardening,

7:35

sunbathing and keeping fit as best she

7:37

could. For work, she

7:39

went on to secure roles in

7:41

various industries, including jewellery making, sewing,

7:43

market jobs and even a stint

7:45

working in a cafe, before she

7:47

finally retired in 2011 at

7:50

the age of 65. She

7:52

got on well with her neighbours and loved

7:54

her post working life, but it's important for

7:56

me to wind the clock back a few

7:59

decades before continuing. so that I

8:01

can introduce the second key person in this week's

8:03

story. David John

8:05

Maggs was born on October 19th,

8:07

1950 and it seems

8:09

as though from a very young age he

8:11

began to experience what would go on to

8:14

become a lifetime of difficulties. Firstly,

8:16

when he was just seven his mum died.

8:18

I can't comment on what her

8:20

cause of death was or whether she died suddenly

8:23

or was ill for a while, but

8:25

regardless the impact that would have

8:27

on any seven-year-old kid is astronomical.

8:30

With his grandma becoming his guardian Maggs

8:32

was essentially raised by her and although

8:34

his dad was in the picture it

8:37

sounds as if it was incredibly strict

8:39

given his armed forces background. Having

8:42

likely served in the Second World War, his

8:44

dad may well have left the raising of

8:46

his children to the grandma with him stepping

8:48

in from time to time to discipline them.

8:51

That is conjecture for the record, but it's

8:53

logical based on the research I've done. Maggs

8:56

did have a sister, she was his only

8:58

sibling as far as I can tell and

9:00

his struggles continued well into his teenage years.

9:03

At the age of 14 Maggs was

9:05

reportedly misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis on

9:08

the back of him suffering from

9:10

what was essentially epilepsy. Later,

9:13

I assume in more advanced

9:15

years, he would be correctly

9:17

diagnosed with emphysema and chronic

9:19

obstructive pulmonary disease. He

9:22

studied business at a local grammar school and

9:24

went on to become an accountant at a

9:26

place called Lucas Girling's. Maggs

9:29

and Linda had first met in 1977

9:32

when he was 27 and she was 31 at

9:35

the Commodore Club in Cumbran. Despite

9:37

them having a brief relationship at that time,

9:39

they lost contact with each other and would

9:41

not speak again for 11 years. When

9:45

they managed to rekindle their relationship in 1988, it

9:49

seemed as though fate had brought them together and

9:51

that theirs was a relationship that would last forever.

9:54

Linda moved into Maggs's home, number 44 lands down

9:57

in Pontypool with her mum now. in 1990. 12

9:59

years later in 2002 Mags and Linda got married.

10:02

For Linda it was her second

10:08

husband but for Mags she was

10:10

his third wife. With

10:12

both of his previous marriages ending

10:15

in acrimony's divorces each time leaving

10:17

Mags suffering both financially and mentally

10:19

he requested Linda sign a prenup

10:21

but she refused to do so.

10:24

Money was an important part of Mags

10:26

life especially given being an accountant was

10:28

his career until his retirement due to

10:30

ill health in 1999 at the

10:33

age of 49. Mags

10:36

son Darren from his first marriage would

10:38

later say how his dad was so

10:40

preoccupied with finances that he would resort

10:43

to giving Linda what was essentially a

10:45

weekly allowance. With the money,

10:47

a reported 30 pound a week, she

10:49

was to purchase groceries. Given

10:52

how little she was allegedly provided

10:54

with it put a stop to

10:56

any potential frivolous spending. In

10:59

reality if that is true it

11:01

reveals a dark and controlling side

11:03

to Mags' personality. The

11:05

technical term for it is economic

11:08

abuse something legally recognized as a

11:10

form of domestic abuse and is

11:12

even defined in the domestic abuse

11:14

act. Declaring himself

11:16

the boss of finances Mags used

11:18

money to control his third wife

11:21

so concerned was he about getting

11:23

stung again. When number 44 Lansdowne

11:25

was sold the couple along with

11:27

Nellie moved to number 11 Lansdowne

11:29

just down the street with Mags

11:32

using the funds from one to

11:34

buy the other. Just

11:36

like number 44 was number 11 was purchased

11:39

in Mags son name perhaps another

11:41

attempt to exercise in financial control

11:43

and ensuring that any assets he

11:45

had were protected should his relationship

11:48

with Linda go downhill. Nellie

11:50

sadly passed away in 2013 but despite being

11:53

heartbroken Linda would continue to entertain

11:56

at the property. An

11:58

excellent cook she would free. frequently host

12:00

banquets and barbecues whenever the weather held

12:02

out and come Christmas time it was

12:04

a tradition for her family to congregate

12:06

at number 11 and consume the

12:09

feast Linda had put on for them. When

12:12

researching this case I looked through

12:14

the comments section of various videos

12:16

on YouTube because not only is

12:18

Magzas99 call on there, which I'll

12:20

play later, but his arrest is

12:22

too. Some of

12:24

the comments are quite frankly disgusting to say

12:26

the least because they appear to have been

12:29

left without any effort being made to look

12:31

into the background of Magz and Linda. There

12:34

was a lot of sympathy offered to

12:36

Magz purely due to his age and

12:38

frailty with many suggesting Linda had bled

12:40

him dry. Based on

12:42

my research those comments are complete nonsense.

12:46

Granted we don't have the luxury of

12:48

knowing what goes on behind closed doors,

12:50

but based on testimony from both sides

12:52

of the family I'm confident that Linda

12:54

was nothing less than a wonderful woman

12:56

who always saw the best in everyone.

12:59

Those close to Linda, such as her

13:01

daughter in law from her first marriage,

13:03

have gone on record saying how Linda

13:05

would often confide in them and reveal

13:07

things about her marriage to Magz which

13:09

were beyond concerning. Magz

13:12

was reportedly sex mad with one

13:14

of his mottos being, no sex,

13:16

no marriage, no nothing, however

13:19

his ability to perform would often be

13:21

lacking which was detrimental to his mental

13:23

health. Other testimonies

13:25

suggest that Magz would often be verbally

13:27

abusive to Linda calling her stuff like

13:30

thick and stupid when things got heated,

13:32

although Linda herself told a police officer

13:34

he'd never so much as laid a

13:36

finger on her. It

13:39

seems that Magz was so preoccupied with

13:41

not getting financially ruined again that he

13:43

would do things such as threaten to

13:45

sell the home which again was in

13:47

his sole name and leave Linda homeless.

13:50

The semi-detached property was worth around 200

13:52

grand at the time. Their

13:55

relationship began to strain in 2009 when Magz was forced

13:57

to hand in his It

16:01

needed to be fitted with a

16:03

small device called an implantable cardioverter

16:06

defibrillator or ICD which is placed

16:08

under the skin usually in the

16:10

space just below the collarbone or

16:13

clavicle. The device

16:15

monitors the patient's heart rate and

16:17

when necessary sends electrical pulses to

16:19

regulate abnormal heart rhythms. When

16:22

he was arrested, Mags claimed that Linda only

16:25

visited him twice whilst he was in hospital

16:27

recovering and he was in there for 5

16:29

months. By March 2020

16:31

the marriage was all but officially

16:33

over. Despite both remaining in

16:35

the property at number 11 lands down,

16:38

Mags and Linda occupied different areas of

16:40

the house. As

16:42

a result of Mags' snoring, he and Linda

16:44

had had separate bedrooms for a good few

16:46

years but by this point Mags had put

16:48

a lock on the living room door and

16:50

would not allow Linda to access it. His

16:53

bedroom was also locked although it sounds

16:55

like he used that area mainly to

16:57

store paperwork because he slept in the

16:59

living room downstairs. Based

17:02

on my findings, Linda had the entire

17:04

upstairs portion of the property to herself

17:06

with the exception of Mags bedroom with

17:09

him occupying the downstairs area. Only

17:11

the bathroom and kitchen areas were shared. Linda

17:15

did have a lock of her own for her bedroom

17:17

but never got around to installing it. The

17:20

story will continue after these quick messages.

17:47

now back to the story. Having

17:50

previously acted as a carer for

17:52

Mags, as their marriage went downhill

17:54

Linda passed that task onto his

17:56

sister Nadine. She recalls

17:58

how her brother quickly became a child. That

20:00

same month, Gwent Police paid Mags a

20:03

visit in connection with the report, also

20:05

at the property where Linda and Mags' sister

20:08

near Dean. One

20:10

of the officers, PC Ben Jones, said

20:12

he told Linda that there were concerns

20:14

regarding her safety, but she flippantly dismissed

20:16

them and explained how Mags simply wanted

20:18

her out of the house. She

20:21

did not want to complete a domestic

20:23

abuse risk assessment, but took on board

20:25

advice from the officers regarding trying to

20:27

avoid getting into any arguments with Mags.

20:31

Linda was also told to keep her phone

20:33

close by at all times should she need

20:35

to phone the police. She was later offered

20:37

a safe house by the council, but rejected

20:39

it. Mags

20:41

confessed to a third person, family friend

20:43

Pamela, that he wanted Linda dead, and

20:45

when asked by her if he realised

20:47

that would mean he'd end up in

20:49

prison, he reportedly said, I don't

20:51

care. Mags would

20:54

later reveal in court that she didn't feel the

20:56

need to report Mags' comments to the police, as

20:58

she didn't always believe what came out of his

21:00

mouth. As part

21:02

of divorce proceedings, it's mandatory that

21:04

all assets are declared before they get

21:07

underway. Mags was

21:09

far from happy at what he considered

21:11

to be a prying into his personal

21:13

finances because all joint and sole assets

21:15

must be declared. The

21:18

couple only held sole bank accounts, not even

21:20

a joint one was open to pay the

21:22

bills. Linda's main source

21:24

of income was her state pension, whereas

21:26

David had a private pension to supplement

21:29

his from the state. He

21:31

became convinced that Linda was hiding money

21:33

and assets, and that as a result

21:36

she would benefit greatly from the divorce

21:38

whereas he would significantly lose out. The

21:41

irony was that discrepancies were found regarding

21:43

what Mags had declared and what he

21:45

actually had. He was the

21:47

one hiding funds, and before long a secret

21:49

savings account he held with a balance of

21:52

just under £15,000 was revealed. A

21:56

decree Nissi was due to be granted on

21:58

March 4th 2021 which

22:00

is essentially a provisional decree of

22:02

divorce given by the court when

22:04

the legal and procedural requirements for

22:06

divorce are met. It

22:08

was granted on the grounds of Mags'

22:11

unreasonable behaviour. February

22:13

5th 2021 is where our main timeline

22:15

begins and it was during that evening

22:17

that Linda spoke to her daughter and

22:19

a couple of her friends about the

22:21

impending divorce. Linda's friend

22:24

Iris had a conversation with her shortly

22:26

after 5pm to discuss the letter both

22:28

she and Mags were due to receive

22:30

regarding the granting of the decree nissi.

22:34

She feared Mags' reaction and expressed concerns

22:36

about what he might do after reading

22:38

it. Even so Iris

22:40

recalled Linda insisting that Mags wouldn't hurt

22:42

her but if he were to she

22:44

would just call the police. Iris

22:47

offered Linda a place to stay at her

22:50

home that night but the gesture was politely

22:52

turned down. Another

22:54

friend of Linda's called Belinda spoke to her over

22:56

the phone that night at 9.28pm. She

22:59

recalled Linda being upset and as she

23:02

had with Iris expressed concerns regarding Mags

23:04

opening the letter which would soon arrive

23:06

at the house addressed to him. The

23:10

last person to speak with Linda that evening

23:12

was her daughter Kerry. Chatting

23:14

at around half nine shortly after the call

23:16

with Belinda had ended, Linda informed her daughter

23:19

that she had just had a covid jab

23:21

and needed to avoid seeing anyone for ten

23:23

days. Kerry wanted to visit

23:25

her the next day but was asked not to by

23:27

her mum as a result of that. The

23:30

divorce proceedings were once more discussed

23:32

as were Linda's concerns regarding Mags'

23:34

reaction to the letter. Kerry

23:37

had no idea that upon hanging up the phone

23:39

she would never speak to her mum again. Meanwhile

23:43

Mags had been speaking with Nadine over

23:45

the phone. Earlier in

23:47

the day she had taken him to get a covid jab

23:49

of his own and at the time noticed how it looked

23:51

as though he carried the weight of the world on his

23:53

shoulders. She then went

23:55

to the house with him to find some paperwork

23:58

before heading home and phoning him just to make

24:00

sure he was getting on okay on his own.

24:03

During the call, Nadine recalled Mags being

24:05

in a buoyant mood, owing to the

24:07

fact he was watching a golden oldie

24:09

film on Netflix. Satisfied

24:11

that her brother was in a better place

24:14

than he'd seemed earlier, the call ended with

24:16

Nadine no doubt smiling to herself and hoping

24:18

that things would get better from that point

24:20

for her brother. The

24:22

next morning, at around 9am, Mags

24:25

headed to the kitchen, grabbed two

24:27

large knives, and headed upstairs. Leaving

24:30

one knife on the floor outside Linda's bedroom

24:32

and heading inside with the other in his

24:34

hand, the precise nature of what

24:36

happened next is known only to Mags.

24:39

Some claim that Linda was asleep,

24:41

however Mags himself claimed he had

24:43

a brief conversation with his wife

24:46

regarding him wanting to discuss the

24:48

financial aspects of their impending divorce.

24:51

Having not spoken to each other for at

24:53

least a couple of months, Mags insisted that

24:55

Linda told him to get out and leave

24:57

everything to the solicitors. Regardless

25:00

of which version of events is true,

25:02

what we do know is that Mags

25:04

then proceeded to stab Linda to death

25:06

with the knife before taking himself downstairs,

25:08

placing both knives on the bottom step,

25:11

and phoning the police. I'll

25:13

now play you the 999 call Mags

25:15

made that morning at 9.13am. I

25:29

just killed a wife. You just got

25:31

sorry? Please. Yeah,

25:35

how can I help you? You threw it to the police, is this

25:37

an emergency? Please.

25:41

Is this an emergency? Yeah. Yeah, why?

25:45

I think I just killed a wife. Your wife,

25:47

is it? Yeah. Okay, what's your address, are you

25:50

at home? Yeah. Yeah,

25:52

what's the address say? Says well,

25:54

okay, so what's happened in between you and your

25:56

wife today but this what happened? Did you have

25:58

an argument and? Did it just horrible? ambulance and

26:00

call the police. Yeah you two

26:02

to the police that's fine okay so I'm gonna log

26:05

on now and we'll call the ambulance out as well

26:07

okay but what happened? I

26:10

stabbed her. You stabbed her did you? Yeah.

26:12

Okay have you got a knife on you now? No.

26:20

Where's your wife? In

26:22

bed. She's

26:24

left in bed, is she? Yeah. Okay.

26:27

What's your name? No

26:30

I've been to the US. Is it

26:32

David I'm speaking to? David yeah. Hi

26:34

David okay. We're gonna be

26:36

sending help out to you now okay. Is there a

26:38

lot of blood or? Yeah.

26:42

Yeah? Is she's speaking to you or do you

26:44

think she's passed away? I'm passed away I think. Okay.

26:47

What makes you think that? Can you see if she's still

26:50

breathing or is she talking? I don't know. I

26:53

didn't know I just lost it. You

26:55

just lost it? So did you have an argument did you? I

26:58

just lost a hunk. He just come to me.

27:00

He just helped me. He was free. He

27:03

just helped me. You'll

27:06

note how the call handler knew his first

27:09

name was David despite him only given his

27:11

surname. Clearly he was known to

27:13

the police on the back of the previous visit

27:15

in November 2020. Whether

27:18

he had been visited by them before or after

27:20

then is not known. Police

27:22

body cam footage shows PC Matthew Shaw

27:24

of headlou gwent police entering mags home

27:27

at 9 24 a.m

27:29

and arresting him two minutes later. The

27:31

knives at the bottom of the stairs are

27:34

clearly visible in the footage which is available

27:36

to view online. Mags

27:38

also had what appeared to be dried blood

27:40

on his hands and on a cast he

27:42

wore owing to a broken wrist he'd suffered

27:44

a few weeks before he killed Linda. With

27:47

mags encusted downstairs PC Roach headed

27:50

to the upstairs bedroom where he

27:52

found Linda's unresponsive lying in

27:54

her bed on her back. It

27:56

was clear that she had a devastating injury on the

27:59

right side of an neck. No

28:01

pulse could be located, but even so,

28:03

the officer and his colleagues did their

28:05

best to resuscitate Linda before officially pronouncing

28:07

her dead at 9.41am. As well as

28:12

the neck injury, Linda had injuries

28:14

to her chest, stomach and arms.

28:16

In total, she had 15

28:18

stab wounds. Pathologist

28:20

Dr Richard Jones, who conducted Linda's

28:23

post-mortem, explained that her death came

28:25

as a result of stab wounds

28:27

to her neck and trunk, including

28:29

wounds to their right internal jugular

28:31

vein, the pulmonary trunk and aorta.

28:34

The most significant of her injuries

28:36

was to her chest, a 15.5cm

28:38

stab wound. Dr

28:40

Jones said the knife had cut through

28:43

the left third rib before piercing the

28:45

left lung and a sac around Linda's

28:47

heart. As it was removed

28:49

from Linda's chest, it cut the seventh rib

28:51

at the back. That

28:53

led to Linda's left chest cavity to be filled

28:56

with 700ml of clotted blood, with 10ml of blood

28:58

being found in the sac

29:01

around her heart. Another

29:04

9.5cm stab wound caused severe

29:06

damage to Linda's small intestine,

29:09

the right renal artery and

29:11

aorta. Based on

29:13

the damage, Dr Jones explained that the

29:15

stab wounds would have likely been inflicted

29:17

using a moderate amount of force. During

29:21

his arrest, Mags told PC Roach that Linda

29:23

was trying to steal two hours off him.

29:26

When he was later questioned about why he

29:28

decided to take two knives to Linda's bedroom,

29:30

Mags said, The wife can

29:32

get right ball share. She's only 4ft 10, but

29:34

she can be a right madam, so I took

29:36

it for protection in case things got out of

29:38

hand, but it went the other way. 30

29:43

years had been married and she couldn't keep her

29:45

mouth shut, so I topped her. Realising

29:48

he'd once more confessed to murder, Mags

29:50

soon corrected himself by saying, I can't

29:52

remember it mind, when he was reminded

29:54

that it was under oath. Whilst

29:58

in custody, Mags' welfare was checked in

36:00

the mags. Thanks again Karen Leslie Gilbert
