Lucy Moderatz (Sandra Bullock), a lonely Chicago “L” token collector, has a secret and hopeless crush on Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher), a handsome commuter who passes her booth every day. While working a shift on Christmas Day, Lucy witnesses Peter getting mugged and falling off the train platform. Without thinking, Lucy jumps onto the tracks and rescues an unconscious Peter from being hit by an oncoming train, saving his life. 

At the hospital, Lucy is mistaken for Peter’s fiancée and unwittingly becomes entangled with his raucous family. While Lucy is enjoying the holidays with the Callaghan Clan, she gets closer with Jack (Bill Pullman), Peter’s suspicious but intrigued brother. Will Lonely Lucy finally find love? And, if so, which brother will she choose?
