This is the Way!
Our series through the gospel of John does not say “A” way, but “The” Way. Why? Because Jesus only offers us one way to follow Him, one way to salvation, one way to the life that we dream about. We think we can pick and choose the parts we like and don’t like about following Jesus and still experience the life He promises. We create our own way, another way, “A” way, and then wonder why it doesn’t work.
“The Way” is so counterintuitive to us that we are afraid to really accept it. It’s a paradox- a seemingly absurd or contradictory statement, but when tested proves true - “If you want to save your life, you have to lose it…If you want to be first, you have to be last…” To embrace “The Way” will feel like the death of joy, freedom, options, potential, and yet it’s the birth of real joy, freedom, and options. What Jesus asks, is simply what He has done.
This week we saw the paradox lived out before us, as a woman makes a choice that everyone else thought, “what a waste!” While Jesus’ heart was moved, and what he deemed her act beautiful. She knew Jesus was The Way, and she responded accordingly.
