Welcome to “CFHoCo Did You Know,” a podcast that shines a light on significant issues in our community and seeks to connect people, places and organizations to worthy causes across Howard County, Maryland, and beyond.
On today’s episode, Beverly White-Seals, the president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Howard County, talks to Ying Matties about issues that Asian Americans face. Matties, who helped organize the #StopAsianHate solidarity rally at the Columbia lakefront in March, is actively involved in the work of several local nonprofits, including the Chinese American Network for Diversity and Opportunity (CANDO) and the Howard County Coalition for Immigrant Justice.
The two discuss Ying’s background and why she chose to live in Howard County, her community activism, recent hate crimes targeting Asian-Americans, Asian stereotypes, how history sadly repeats itself and what can be done to educate and make positive change.
