Windsor Park Evangelical Church is located at 76th and Saginaw in the South Shore neighborhood, in the middle of what you might call a “digital desert.”To address this issue, the church is using its unique architectural advantage-- a steeple that reaches above the treeline and over the majority of the buildings in the neighborhood-- to provide a wifi hub that offers connectivity to the building and surrounding neighborhood. It’s an unconventional solution, but one that’s increasingly needed as the digital divide in Chicago persists.Karis went to Windsor Park to talk with Will Williamson, president of the congregation, Alvyn Walker, a veteran who leads job training programs at the church, and local residents about the challenges and opportunities in bridging Chicago's digital divide.
