Episode 3 of Diabetes Exposed: The Not-So-Terrible Truth

Today’s show is all about the pervasive negativity found in diabetes online discussions and the damaging effect it can have on one’s confidence and belief in our ability to achieve good control. Venting websites, blogs, and Twitter are all part of an arena in which a symphony of hopelessness, despair, and a passive contentment for failure are openly played for all who are ready to listen. Our own human tendencies make us vulnerable to the engaging rhythm of the tune. We must resist. Our lives and the lives of others depend on it.

We must resist “learned helplessness” and not give in to the “crab mentality” that Dr. Stephen Ponder speaks of. Many will discount our success and give it various untrue labels. But we cannot let the crabs pull us back into their despair. We must create our own tune that communicates hope and a clear understanding that education, self-knowledge, and the right mindset will lead us down a positive path where there is no limit to the success we can achieve.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of this show is to dispel myths and false preconceptions and to find excellence in diabetes self-management by fighting the troubling trend of low expectations. Whether it comes from a fellow PWD, negative website, blog, or social media posts, the idea that we can’t succeed in our diabetes self-management is a sentiment constantly echoed and sometimes is just stated outright. At the risk of making some enemies, I’m going to strongly disagree. Success is possible for most diabetics. We can achieve our dreams, even with the burden of diabetes and the masses who say we can’t. I want to help you tap into strategies that will lead to your own success and help you see the power of your own self-efficacy.
