Welcome back to Part two of Discover the Hustle Podcast where Dylan and Brad interview Marc Busko. Part one was fantastic and part two might just even be better. We dove right back into the interview after our short break. Our first question to Marc, why do you hustle? He breaks down what that means to him. He talks about how he wants to use his specific talents, skills, abilities, and gifts to impact the word and the lives of others. He feels that every single day he has the opportunity to utilize these things to make that impact. He knows that he can utilize his public speaking ability, that very few people have to the level Marc does, to project extreme value to the people in his audience. One of the things he emphasizes is legacy. How does he want to be remembered? How do you want to be remembered? This can help you develop your long term vision and passion. It will be the fuel behind everything that you do for the rest of your life.

We then dive into what work is to Marc. Work means blocking off time to climb towards those goals. Work doesn’t have to negative, unless you are stuck in that mindset. You have to understand how fortunate you are for the situation you are in. Once you understand this it’s so much easier to go through your day with fire and passion. Marc truly believes picking something that you do really well and execute on that for the rest of your life. On top of that, he truly believes that if you dislike your current situation then you need to just drop it and start doing something different. Start looking for things you enjoy and work at it. He understands that people need income to support their current situation, whatever that may be, but there is no sense in continuously doing something that you do not enjoy. Money will always follow your passions and vocations. Marc literally encourages you to stop doing what you’re doing if you do not like it, call him, and then work together to figure it out. This is hard to hear for most people. Whether you entirely ready or not, your family, friends, etc. might not be ready to hear that this is the decision you will be make it. So how do you solve this? Put it in their terms. Be honest with them, but give them what they want to hear without sacrificing what your intentions are. At the end of the day, if they aren’t willing to support you then you don’t need this person in your life and as difficult as it may be you need to cut them out. Remember, just try to meet in the middle. It all goes back to being intentional.

So how do you go about cutting these people out of your life? Well once you realize they are starting to fall off and not reciprocate the same effort that you’re putting forward, you just stop trying. It just becomes pointless, because they aren’t committed to the same level as you in providing value through that friendship. Friendships are two way streets that take value provided from both sides. If it’s not coming from the other side, then just cut them out. We talked about one of our biggest pet peeves, which is the phrase “pick your brain.” It means someone is trying to take what they can and provide no value. We are all huge believers of giving more in the relationship than you take. This is something that Gary Vee really pushes. You can always find some way to provide value in any relationship. You can go above and beyond without expecting anything in return, and more often than not you will be surprised with what you end up receiving. Marc gives a great example of what he did for a company in New York that covered the New York tech scene. He then dives into how the first email you ever send to a company should not be asking for a job. You need to spend time getting to know the company and the people, before you send cold emails or phone calls asking for a job. Effort wins every single time. Make the extra effort to show people how much you care.

Towards the middle we asked Marc if he would change anything about his life up until this point. He said if anything he would focus on being in the moment more. You will live a more fulfilled life and actually enjoy/remember the special times you’ve had. It’s time to put our phones down and focus in on everything going around us. It’s so easy to get caught up in technology with today’s world, but it’s really important to have those times to disengage and really just take in everything going on around you. Especially when interacting with others. It shouldn’t be a kind gesture to put your phone down when talking to someone or just not pick it up at all. It SHOULDN’T be, because it SHOULD be expected. It should be expected that you will give that person your undivided attention. And in case you were wondering, Marc chooses experiences over money every time. As he moves to Philly he’s taking his essentials and just planning on enjoying the time he will have out there.

Another great recommendation (they never stop) that Marc has is trying to set your notifications to off. No sounds, no vibrations. He chooses to use the “dumb” smart phone. His phone will light up for messages and phone calls, but besides that he will not receive anything else. This gives him so much freedom over his day. He is in charge and can remain focused without using his phone. You truly learn that you aren’t missing out on that much. You need to respect your own time and not let other people control your day.

Finally, we wrap up with Marc’s phone screen. He has his entire phone categorized into folders. He is extremely organized and his phone reflects that. And if he had to recommend one app right now, he would choose Slack. It makes communication very smooth and has everything you need. He also loves notes, because he can pop in quick reminders or important things so he won’t forget.

Now really, finally, spend the summer thinking about what you’re good at. Spend time alone and ask what your strengths are. What can you do with it? Learn about yourself and start developing it. Ask your closest friends what you’re good and truly figure it out. Pick those trends and capitalize on those things. Choose them, develop them, and then act on them.
