We welcome you once again to this week's episode of Divorce Ranch.

0:06

When last we left our beleaguered detective, Francis had gained the respect of the Sidewinder by tracking down Little Bella.

0:12

Little do the guests know of Francis and Hondo's other discovery,

0:15

that of a bloody crime scene in the desert, complete with charred scraps of evidence.

0:19

With each passing day, the ranch's denizens reveal secret after secret.

0:24

Our most recent, a trove of Valentine jewels in the room of one Helen Rose.

0:33

Dearest Ma, I have made inroads,

0:36

not only with this confounding case, but with those around me.

0:40

That said, I feel that I'm at a crossroad.

0:43

Right and wrong have always been so clear to me. Yet I've met good people who are presented with choices that are deemed sinful,

0:49

and where the righteous path seems wrong.

0:53

I have always believed that necessary evil is the path of the devil.

0:57

Yet I am being swayed toward the notion that these supposedly sinful acts may be righteously pursued.

1:02

If God guides us, then why has he presented such choices?

1:09

What am I to do? This is some loot you hauled in for yourself.

1:41

Have I detected someone snooping around in my underwear drawer?

1:45

This necklace is one of my favorites. It hangs juuuuust right.

1:52

Where did these come from? Why, Frances, do I detect an accusatory tone in your voice?

1:56

These were found in your room, and apparently much of this is Mrs.

2:00

Ballantine's. If they were found in my room,

2:02

then they must be mine. Did you take this jewelry from Mrs.

2:05

Ballantine? Oh, Frances. As you know,

2:08

we were very close, and on occasion she lent me jewels to enhance my already lovely décolletage.

2:14

There are bracelets and rings and earrings here,

2:16

too. And often she gave me jewels.

2:20

This ring was given to me when she decided to wear the ring that Joey gave her.

2:24

Ah, and here's my tiara.

2:27

That seems awfully generous. Detective,

2:30

these are all cast-offs. Mitzi traded in jewelry just like she traded in people.

2:34

Did you steal these jewels from Mrs. Ballantyne?

2:37

How dare you accuse me of being a thief?

2:39

Mitzi had no one but me. Mrs. Rose!

2:42

Mrs. Rose! I do not care. These jewels are a fair price for my company.

2:46

I brought her to the casino. I introduced her to Joey.

2:49

Mitzi gave me this tiara to wear because we were supposed to go to the casino to celebrate.

2:54

Celebrate what? Hell if I know, but I went to her room to get ready to go to the casino like she told me to.

3:01

But when I got there, I watched her ride away with her Latin lover.

3:05

Honda? Who else can ride like that? And Mitzi's hooting and hollering were unmistakable.

3:10

What did you do? I took all that I could from that jewelry box.

3:13

And then I went to my room. Did you go to the casino?

3:16

Joey's an idiot. But even so, I didn't have the heart to tell him that his girl was with another man.

3:21

And then what? What do you mean, and then what? And then she must have gotten bored with him,

3:25

too, and she never came back to the ranch. And now I am on my own,

3:28

and now I have to find a way to pay for my own meals,

3:31

my own drinks. Mrs. Rose, I... Stop calling me that!

3:37

I just want my life back!

3:40

Queen Helen wants her life back?

3:42

As someone's fancy wife?

3:45

Or maybe the old hag that rode on Mitzi's coattails?

3:49

Sounds like your time as a runaway fiancé is about to run out.

3:52

Be careful who you call a hag. Are you okay?

3:57

Why do you care, detective? I wanted to apologize.

4:00

What for? I often let my singular focus blind me to the task at hand.

4:05

You do what you need to do, and so will I.

4:07

And what is next for you? You heard Helen. I'm a runaway fiancé.

4:12

And now I'm out of money and a job. That is neither a crime nor a sin.

4:16

Oh. Really? Well, thank you,

4:19

Father Francis. Please do not call me that.

4:22

That name is always spoken with such malice.

4:24

That's not really what I meant. I will not apologize for my upbringing.

4:28

Detective O'Connell, I'm sorry.

4:30

That did not come out right. No. No,

4:33

I'm sorry. I meant to be stronger.

4:36

Well, my goodness. It looks like you're just human.

4:40

What will you do now? I guess I'll just go back and do the right thing.

4:46

Thank you. I beg for forgiveness. What is there to forgive?

4:50

For running off, being an ingrate,

4:53

trying not to live under a man's thumb.

4:56

Gosh, I'd be forgiven for being Beverly Brubaker.

4:58

Certainly, your fiancé loves you and will take you back.

5:01

I mean, he's not like Dottie's husband, is he?

5:03

No. He's a good man.

5:07

We've known each other since we were kids. Then how would you be living under his thumb?

5:12

You know, it's amazing how you can know somebody since forever.

5:16

What kind of... I do not know them at all. What does he not know about you?

5:21

On the night that Mitzi ran away. I don't want this night to ever end.

5:48

It doesn't have to. Easy for you to say.

5:51

You're almost divorced! I'm not even married yet!

5:54

And what does that have to do with the price of milk? I thought you said you'd forgotten about him.

6:03

I said when I'm with you, no one else exists.

6:08

Sounds same same to me. But you're gonna be leaving next week!

6:13

I'm leaving the Sidewinder next week. And you're coming with me.

6:16

with me. But where would we go? But what does it matter?

6:19

But it does. But, but, but, but, but... We don't have to go anywhere.

6:26

We could stay right here in Reno. But I can't tell my sister.

6:30

There's that word again. But... You are so beautiful.

6:41

I don't know. I know for certain.

6:45

I'm almost out of... I don't think I can be Mitzi's maid for much longer.

6:50

You don't need to be anyone's maid. I don't have options like you.

6:53

There's lots of money and lots of opportunity. You just need to take it.

6:59

Let's run away. Where?

7:02

I don't know. No one cares, Bev.

7:04

There's lots like us here. My sister would care.

7:07

Dottie only has three more weeks, which means after that,

7:10

she'll be leaving and you can come live with me.

7:14

I can't think that far ahead. But what else is there to think about?

7:18

There's that word again. Wait!

7:31

What have we here?

7:35

Beverly and Hot's ghost sitting in a tree?

7:38

K-I-S-S-I-N-G.

7:42

First comes love. Then comes an institution for women displaying depraved behavior.

7:51

Shut up. I'm the little oriental deviant.

7:55

Your fiancé really dodged a bullet.

8:00

You are perverts, both of you.

8:03

Of course, I understand the jump among us always doing your dirty little deeds.

8:08

But you... I... You have no excuse for such vulgar and disgusting behavior.

8:18

Except obviously coming from a very bad family.

8:22

No trash worse than white trash.

8:29

Dirty yellow monkey.

8:42

So, uh, I guess I deserve whatever I get.

8:46

No, it doesn't- We only have so much of our inheritance left.

8:50

And Dottie deserves to be here. But so do you.

8:53

No, Mr. O'Connell. See what kind of love the Father has bestowed on us,

8:58

that we should be called children of God.

9:01

Yet so we are. The Catholic Boy Act is wearing mighty thin.

9:07

Hopefully this telegram is calling you home to relieve us all.

9:13

Another notice from the Chicago PD. Wondering why Mitzi is not home yet.

9:21

Detective O'Connell! Francis? Get home to mother.

9:29

Priest on his way. Hurry.

9:35

Oh dear. Oh father,

9:38

why do you punish me? Come here.

9:44

No. No!

9:46

Francis, the Lord himself goes before you and will be with you.

9:51

He will never leave you nor forsake you.

9:57

Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged.

10:03

Oh, there.

10:06

There. That's it.

10:09

Shh. I

10:27

need a ride to the train station, otherwise the bus gets here in about an hour.

10:32

Where are you going? Why such haste,

10:35

detective? Oh no,

10:43

Francis... Oh,

10:45

your beautiful mother! I can take the bus.

10:48

When did this telegram come? The train you want does not leave until the morning.

10:54

Oh, I'm so sorry, my friend. I'm not your friend.

10:59

What in God's name would lead you to believe that you and I are friends?

11:02

I do not accept that. You are grieving.

11:04

You rode into the desert the night Mitzi went missing. What?

11:07

No. I did not. Where were you the night Mitzi died?

11:11

I already told you. You told me where you were before she disappeared,

11:14

before she died. She left me that night.

11:17

And what did you do after that? I drank tequila.

11:21

I am ashamed. You expect me to believe that you just- Of course I expect you to believe me!

11:26

I drank a bottle of tequila and then went to sleep by the pool house!

11:29

You rode into the desert with her! I did no such thing!

11:32

You knew where the fire was. Oh, don't do! I rode-

11:35

You led me to the crime scene! Stop lying to me!

11:39

Why would you accuse me? I rode with you!

11:42

I hid evidence with you! I told you my story!

11:45

To hide what you knew. I watched it!

11:49

The other ground she walked on! On your mother's bed!

11:54

Where she lays! Don't talk about my mother!

12:01

Think! Think! You must be missing something,

12:05

my friend! Didn't you want to let us in?

12:08

I do not accept that! We are both grieving men!

12:12

I'm nothing like you! I'll go down! I will let you go and help you until we go to the train station.

12:28

By the morning, if you still believe it is me,

12:32

you may arrest me. Reno PD will thank you for handing them another Mexican criminal.

12:41

Until then, you will look for Mitzi's killer and I will assist you.

12:51

Okay, okay. Let's go back to the night where Mitzi went missing.

12:57

Where is your horse? It is in the stable.

13:00

Helen said that you were riding away with Mitzi into the desert.

13:04

But I was not. Which horses were ridden that day?

13:08

I don't know! There has to be something we're missing!

13:19

Wait a minute. Which is your horse? The guest horse.

13:23

What? The guest horse! This one! She wandered back the morning after Mitzi disappeared!

13:28

Hondo! No! Oh, I thought I left the gate open,

13:30

and I did not want trouble from Aoife. I'm supposed to just- Ah,

13:33

champion was the horse Mitzi rode! Always!

13:35

The guest horse! Hondo! Do not accuse me again!

13:40

You kept this from me? What about the people who are going to be waiting?

13:42

I did not. You must come with us!

13:46

You must go to the casino! Talk to Joey! I'm pretty sure Joey doesn't ride horses.

13:50

No, Joey was at the ranch that night! Oh no!

13:52

And if it is not Joey, as I said, I will surrender myself to you.

13:57

Here you are, Honda! Come on! I'm dealing tonight.

14:00

Come with us. It's your last chance. What do you mean it's your last chance?

14:04

Francis must leave to Chicago in the morning.

14:06

I've been called home. Well, then what's the defeat?

14:10

Uh, no offense, detective. To the casino!

14:13

I'll get Hasco and meet you two at the car. I'm not going to-

14:17

I can't feel complete. Hey,

14:20

your work is not finished here. Come.

14:24

We don't have much time. Detective O'Connell is leaving tomorrow on the same train as Beverly.

14:36

Beverly is leaving? Why? I reckon she came to her senses.

14:40

She decided that life of a wife is better than that of a runaway fiancé.

14:44

She's leaving tomorrow. The train leaves at 11.

14:47

But that can't be right. Before he goes,

14:49

the detective will take one last crack at Joey Matinee.

14:52

After what he did to you? They must be paying you a lot of dough,

14:55

because I'm not so sure that Mitzi Ballantyne is worth all that.

14:58

Detective O'Connell wants to know, with certainty,

15:00

what happened to Mitzi. Okay. What's more interesting is the wonderful coincidence that Mr.

15:07

O'Connell here will be escorting my sister for a good part of her journey.

15:11

That is a nice consolation prize.

15:14

Beverly certainly does not need an escort,

15:16

Mrs. Haverford. Or shall I say,

15:19

Ms. Haverford? Ms. Takagi,

15:22

thank you very much. Why don't you do that?

15:26

What? Go back to your original name.

15:29

The war is over, so it's not so bad. But everyone will know that you're Oriental.

15:33

Dottie, look at my face.

15:37

Did you go to the internment camps? No,

15:40

but my parents went, and I avoided that fate by marrying Mr.

15:44

Haverford. How did you do that? When we were married,

15:47

I changed my name from Hatsuko Tagaki to Hattie

15:50

Haverford. Presto change-o. American.

15:54

I fit in. That couldn't have been easy for you.

15:56

My parents gave their blessing to keep me off the internment list.

16:00

But you still don't fit in. Mr.

16:04

O'Connell, I was born in this country. As were my parents.

16:07

We are American citizens. That's not what I meant.

16:10

My parents lost everything. And while I did not spend time in camp,

16:14

I have lost everything, too. Yes, I know.

16:16

You think I want to dance every night for those who see me as exotic when I am on stage,

16:19

but as a dirty yellow dog when I walk down the street?

16:22

I did not mean... My husband was passed over for promotion over and over and over and over.

16:30

It was untenable. So we decided,

16:33

together, we decided to split.

16:37

What? He had to take back his name.

16:41

Sharing it with me was like a noose that had to come off in order for him to survive.

16:48

I'm so sorry for you. Of course you are.

16:54

See y'all later. What will it be?

17:13

Ginger ale, please. Ginger ale?

17:16

Tell me bothering you again? Ms. Rose?

17:18

Really, Francis? Can't we just go with Helen?

17:22

Come on, try it. Helen! There you go.

17:24

Ma'am? My regular. Make that two,

17:28

please. Oh, no, I... It's fine. Sir?

17:31

Sir? Shh. Ms. Rose. Helen!

17:34

Helen. Helen. It is my last day here,

17:38

and I must stay sharp. Where are you going?

17:40

My mother. She has taken a turn, and...

17:43

There you go. Well, an even better reason to drink.

17:47

I wanted to apologize for our last encounter.

17:50

I know you and Mitzi were great friends. Well,

17:52

that doesn't seem so bad... anymore. But? Are you gonna drink this?

17:56

Um, maybe you should.

17:58

Harrison has announced that he is divorcing me.

18:02

But isn't that a good thing? What would make you think that?

18:06

Well, I just thought that. I guess he's no longer worried about being the first divorced congressman in Connecticut.

18:12

But didn't you want to divorce? Yes,

18:14

but on my terms. Bartender.

18:18

I can't even get an honest man to drink with me.

18:20

We'll drink with you. Well, I won't drink with you,

18:23

but... Yes? I'll have another.

18:26

Ginger ale. And for the lady... They're so sweet.

18:30

Cancel his. We'll have one Mai Tai and one Virgin Dark and Stormy.

18:34

For Mr. Pale and Placid. We're gonna charge more for the Virgin?

18:38

They're pretty rare, these parts. Sure! Honey,

18:41

he's joking. I don't find that to be funny.

18:44

And I'm not pale or placid. Francis.

18:47

Detective O'Connell. Yes.

18:52

I'm sorry. I don't know what's gotten into me.

18:54

Francis, there's quite a bit happening in your life at the moment.

18:57

No, not really. Your mother... I have clues,

19:00

but I haven't solved this case. There's not really anything to solve,

19:03

dear. You're in Reno, Nevada. I feel like a failure.

19:06

Hon, nix that virgin, dark, and stormy,

19:09

and give us the good stuff. Coming right up.

19:11

These are on me. Absolutely not. Don't tell me how to spend my soon-to-be ex-husband's money.

19:18

I'm saving my jewelry money for myself for when I need it,

19:21

but until then, this is on Harrison.

19:25

Here is to the wonderful Mrs. O'Connell.

19:30

Francis, pick up that glass. We are toasting your mother.

19:33

To mother. May we live as long as we want,

19:37

and never want as long as we live.

19:43

Two more. Hon, you really want to figure this out?

19:46

Here's my advice. To solve a crime in Reno,

19:50

you better start thinking like a sinner. This is for you.

19:55

Whose gun is this? I detect an engraved handle.

19:59

M... B? She never left home without it.

20:03

A gift from her favorite Goomba.

20:06

M.B. Mitzi Ballantine.
