The future is a hefty responsibility and
0:02
not one that we take lightly. But then
0:04
taking things lightly has never been what
0:06
hefty is about. That's why we've created the
0:08
Hefty Renew program that turns hard to
0:10
recycle plastics into valuable resources like park benches
0:13
and building materials. To participate,
0:15
simply fill up an orange hefty renew bag
0:17
with accepted items, tie it up and drop
0:19
it in with your regular recycling. That's it.
0:21
It's that easy. It's time to
0:23
rethink recycling with Renew. Particular-valued

April fifteenth, ninety. Ninety Seven. A teenage boy
2:11
was playing hooky from school to go fishing.
2:14
He. Knew exactly where to go.
2:16
Potato Creek. This. Was a
2:18
small running. Creek that sometimes flooded one swollen
2:20
with rainwater is a run, but at this
2:22
time a year a within normal level. This.
2:25
All took place in Union Grove, Alabama,
2:27
a rural area of Mercer County. The.
2:30
Creek Access the team went to was off
2:32
Eagle Rock Drive three miles west of the
2:34
small town of A Rap and about half
2:37
a mile from the Marshall Morgan County line.
2:40
At around eleven am, the teenager saw something up.
2:42
Ahead on the creek bank, it wasn't
2:45
assess. He must have had the south
2:47
of his life to find the body of a
2:49
man lying halfway in the creek. That the man
2:51
was wearing clothes, but some things were notably nothing.
2:53
Has had his hands and his feet.
2:56
The boy ran home and told his parents. I
2:58
couldn't help wondering whether he got in trouble for
3:00
playing hooky, but I would imagine not what he
3:02
saw That say, no doubt impacted. Him for the rest
3:05
of his life and not in a good way. Deputies
3:08
from the marshall. County Sheriff's office arrived
3:10
summoned to the location by the teenagers.
3:13
Parents don't call. And they're in the
3:15
woods on the edge of the crease, just as the boy had
3:17
report it. Was. A mutilated body of
3:19
a white male. His. Ankles
3:21
were still tied together by a piece
3:23
of rope and wire ties. additional pieces
3:25
of matching role play on the ground.
3:28
Nearby diligence searches of the area didn't
3:30
turn up the man's missing extremities, but
3:32
a bunch of air fresheners were found
3:34
by the body. These. Lead
3:36
in part to an investigative. Theory of the
3:38
case. An autopsy on the
3:41
mutilated man revealed the following: He was a
3:43
white male between the ages of nineteen and
3:45
thirty. He was about five foot nine inches
3:47
tall, and one hundred and fifty five pounds.
3:50
Based. On his body hair, he had reddish
3:52
blond hair on his missing head as well.
3:55
The young man's head and hands had been
3:57
removed by a tooth blade such as a
3:59
saw. His. It was reported had
4:01
a nibble that detached and removed by animal
4:03
predation, but I believe this is inaccurate and
4:05
they were removed as well. But.
4:08
That wasn't all. Some other body
4:10
parts were missing internal. Once the
4:12
pathologists. Found an open wound on the
4:15
man's chest and his heart and spleen
4:17
had been removed with near surgical precision.
4:20
It's the stuff of nightmares. The.
4:22
Pathologist ruled the man's death a homicide.
4:25
By sharp force trauma. It was
4:27
not clear whether that meant he been stabbed. Or
4:29
shot or what? Mercer County Sheriff's
4:31
Office Chief Deputy Willie or told.
4:33
Mcclatchy News in an email quote Based on
4:36
the location of the incision, we do believe
4:38
that this was done to. Destroy forensic
4:40
evidence and quote. They called
4:42
it a forensic countermeasure. But.
4:46
Marshall. County Sheriff's Office Chief Investigator
4:48
Keith Wilson. Works this case for his entire
4:51
tenure at the Sheriff's office. Being assigned
4:53
the case in two thousand when he joined the
4:55
agency, He recently retired. He
4:57
told W H and T quote someone went
4:59
to great lengths to hide the identity of
5:02
our victim and the of his death. The.
5:05
Investigators theory was that the. Extremities or
5:07
removed to prevent identification via fingerprints
5:09
and dental and the internal organs
5:11
were removed because they bore evidence
5:13
of trauma that to provide investigative
5:15
leap. For. Example evidence of
5:18
the type of knife blade used or bullet
5:20
that were buried in those organs. It
5:23
seems Investigator Cute wilson lean toward
5:25
gunshots he told Sand Mountain News
5:27
and twenty Twenty One that's the
5:29
john doe's killer had a good
5:31
understanding of anatomy. The quote
5:33
surgical type wounds in the victims
5:35
chest most likely. Were intended to
5:38
obscure bullet holes. And removed the ballistic
5:40
evidence from the court. So.
5:43
The investigators didn't have much to go on.
5:45
They took a look at what they had
5:47
according to what's been released. The john doe
5:49
was moderately decomposed, but Investigator Wilson did not
5:51
think that he had been lying on that
5:53
creek bank the whole time he'd been dead.
5:56
Space. On the amputations. And the
5:58
surgery performed on his body. He. Was certainly
6:00
killed and mutilated elsewhere. Wilson.
6:03
Told the Gadsden Times quote, he decompose
6:05
somewhere else The body was only there
6:07
a matter of days or less. The
6:09
body had been stored somewhere else before
6:11
it was disposed of in that creek.
6:13
And quote: The air fresheners
6:15
where the dead giveaway. Here, They were either
6:17
used by someone to obscure the. Smell of
6:19
D Com Indoors somewhere where John Doe
6:21
was being stored or they were used
6:23
to keep the smell from pervading a
6:26
vehicle while the decomposing body was transported.
6:28
We need to add a new item to our
6:31
list of suspicious purchases. Like rope, zip ties
6:33
and rubber gloves. Or most, a pack
6:35
of glade. So. Donda
6:37
was killed somewhere else, parts of them removed
6:39
and disposed of in the in tax torso,
6:41
leg on portion of him south somewhere until
6:44
someone could no longer a bad the smell
6:46
or was afraid of being noticed And that's
6:48
when this person decided to deposit John Doe
6:50
in the woods on the side of could
6:53
take a creek perhaps hoping that the water
6:55
would rise and russia or mans away forever.
6:58
Investigator Wilson told the San Martin Reporter
7:00
quote, somebody local may have placed the
7:02
body their it's not just the. Place.
7:04
You signed. It's a remote area. He
7:07
told the Gadsden Times quote, i don't think
7:09
somebody was. As wandering through the area would
7:11
have found that spot. It
7:13
was down a dirt road that wasn't used much. There
7:15
were no houses and the area where the body
7:17
was place and whoever left in their knew that
7:19
he would not be seen. Dropping off as
7:22
incriminating cargo. But. Maybe he was more
7:24
on that in a moment. Because.
7:27
There was no way to identify the
7:29
John Dell. No prints, know face. Know
7:31
Sue size, know wallet and his jeans
7:33
pocket. The investigators looks to his
7:36
clothing. these were have faded glory sorts
7:38

7:40
and gray vertical stripes and thirty two.
7:42
Thirty: Levi Strauss Cyber One. Genes.
7:45
You could not get more generic clothing if you
7:47
tried, so that led nowhere. But. Interestingly,
7:49
the dando was wearing a shirt, despite his
7:51
chest having been. Opened up to remove
7:54
them organs. Investigator Wilson told the
7:56
Gadsden Times quotes there were indications
7:58
that he was redress. Unfortunately,
8:00
I couldn't get investigators at the Marshall
8:02
County Sheriff's Office answer my questions about
8:04
this case. One of it was about
8:07
the body being redressed. Marshall.
8:12
County investigators began sifting through missing
8:14
persons. Reports from the area and the
8:16
wider region hoping that they would come across
8:18
one in which a young white male would.
8:21
John Doe's physical characteristics was reported. That
8:23
they didn't find one appeals to the public
8:25
for information, gilded some tips that led to
8:27
dead ends. Investigators concluded that John
8:29
Doe was likely not from the area and
8:32
had been dumped there by someone who was.
8:35
Police. Turn to the only hope they had
8:37
of the time, a possible witness sighting of someone
8:39
involved in the case. Three. Days before
8:42
John Doe was found by the young angler. On
8:44
April Twelfth, a witness saw a man in the
8:46
area. After John Doe's discovery with
8:48

8:50
he'd seen the man the witness saw stood
8:53

8:55
before and he was quote acting neuro. Police.
8:58
Believe that this man might have been there because he
9:00
was dumping. John Doe's body. They
9:02
actually arranged for the witness to undergo
9:04
hypnosis to recall as many details as
9:06
possible. About the suspicious man. As
9:09
gets was released of the man. The witness saw
9:11
and it is very specific. A description
9:13
of his vehicle was also released. The.
9:16
Man and a sketch was a white
9:18
male six foot one, two hundred and
9:21
ten pounds with a long face, a
9:23
very high forehead, black color length hair,
9:25

10:07
amazing specificity of this information and a

10:11

10:22
County Sheriff's Office and the State
10:24

10:56

11:05

11:07
was able to find posts online by locals
11:09

11:11
by drug dealers with names like a bulldog
11:13
and had his head, hands, and organs were
11:15
all dumped in different places by multiple participants
11:17

11:20
ran down all rumors like this, even

conference to inform the media of the status
13:24
of the case and attempts together. Helpful tip.
13:28
Investigator Keith Wilson had now been working the
13:30
John Doe case. For nineteen years. He
13:32
told the media quote every investigators since
13:34
Nineteen Ninety Seven that has come through
13:36
the Sheriff's office has in some way
13:39
touch this case, interviewed somebody, or followed
13:41
up on leads. I. Have done extensive
13:43
work on it. I would love to solve this
13:45
case. Before I retire. Wilson.
13:48
Said that the remains in the possession of
13:50
the state forensic lab had been reexamined several.
13:52
Times over the years. He told
13:54
the media that he had gathered both nuclear
13:57
and mitochondrial dna from John Doe. And.
13:59
Submitted it. CODIS's unidentified human remains
14:01
database with no hits. He
14:04
had sent the rope binding John Doe's ankles
14:06
and all his clothing to forensic labs to
14:08
be analyzed for touch DNA that could lead
14:10
to the killer, all to no avail. Quote,
14:14
The main focus right now is to look for a
14:16
person that may be possibly missing that has never been
14:18
reported. If anybody knows anything like
14:20
that, if they would call us, that would be
14:22
great, Wilson said. It's a matter
14:24
of identifying that person, and I think that's
14:26
been the holdup of the case all along.
14:30
Under questioning from the media, Wilson said that
14:32
the agency was researching whether they could use
14:34
a private lab to analyze the DNA from
14:36
John Doe. In particular, they were
14:39
interested in technology that would permit the
14:41
creation of a computer-generated image of John
14:43
Doe's face, since they didn't have
14:45
his head that was deemed an essential starting point. They
14:47
were assessing the amount of funds that would
14:50
be required to do phenotyping and genealogy, about
14:52
$12,000. We
14:54
hoped to allow a family somewhere some closure
14:57
to their missing loved one, Marshall County
14:59
Sheriff Phil Simms said. Well,
15:02
they did. Chief Investigator Keith
15:04
Wilson proposed to Sheriff Simms that they
15:06
hire Parabon Nanolabs to help identify John
15:08
Doe. This from the Sand Mountain
15:11
Reporter, quote, This is the only
15:13
cold case we have where we do not have an
15:15
identification on the victim, said Wilson. When
15:17
they brought me this option, I said absolutely,
15:19
Sheriff Simms said. All leads and
15:21
interviews we have done up to this point have gone nowhere. We
15:24
don't know who was telling the truth. If we can
15:26
identify the victim, we can solve this case. They
15:29
gathered the funds required to pay for the DNA
15:32
testing and analysis. DNA was extracted
15:34
from one of John Doe's femurs by
15:36
the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. And
15:39
in December 2019, 3.5 nanograms of DNA was sent to Parabon. Whole
15:44
genome sequencing produced 97.9% of
15:47
the SNPs needed for investigative genetic
15:49
genealogy after imputation. In
15:52
May 2021, the Marshall County Sheriff's
15:54
Office released a phenotype image of
15:57
John Doe prepared using Parabon's
15:59
snapshot. technology. It was the first time
16:01
John Doe had ever been given facial features,
16:04
which were dictated by his DNA. The
16:07
computer-generated image showed a light-skinned white
16:09
male with a prominent chin, sandy
16:11
hair, blue or green eyes, and
16:13
some freckles. His ancestry
16:15
was largely Northern European. The
16:18
sheriff's office, hoping against hope that someone's recognition
16:20
would be triggered by the image of John
16:22
Doe, implored the public for help.
16:26
Behind the scenes, Parabon was conducting a
16:28
genealogy analysis of the case. It
16:31
took a long time as the sequencing and
16:33
imputation were complex and the genealogy was not
16:35
clear-cut. Parabon delivered the
16:37
phenotype to the MCSO on November
16:41
17, 2020, but the genealogy was not completed
16:43
until August 2022. It
16:46
took this much time because when John
16:48
Doe's SNP profile was initially uploaded to
16:50
GEDmatch, the top match was only 54
16:52
centimorgans, a very distant
16:54
cousin. The top seven matches ranged from
16:56
54 centimorgans on the high end
16:58
to 33 centimorgans on the low end. Parabon's
17:01
initial report recommended a few courses of
17:04
action. One would be to pay
17:06
to upload to Family Tree DNA to access any
17:08
additional matches that might be in the database there.
17:11
Another might be to just wait. Parabon would
17:13
continually monitor uploads to both databases to see
17:16
if any additional matches came in. The
17:18
agency approved the upload to Family Tree
17:20
DNA and this was done in March
17:22
2021. With
17:25
additional uploads to GEDmatch and some
17:27
matches located in the Family Tree
17:29
DNA database, the genealogist's top 10
17:31
matches then ranged from 63 at
17:33
the high end to 41 at the low end. However,
17:36
things were complicated by pedigree collapse.
17:38
I've addressed this phenomenon in previous
17:41
episodes. It's often seen in
17:43
rural isolated communities with significant
17:45
intermarriage. Members of this population
17:47
group share more DNA in common than is typical
17:49
and the matches are often related in more than
17:51
one way. You'll hear what I mean in a
17:53
moment. Despite the confusing interrelatedness
17:56
of many of the matches in John Doe's lineage, the
17:58
genealogist's top 10 matches were not included in the Stephanie
18:00
Wyatt focused on a recurring
18:02
surname among the matches, Burke.
18:05
She eventually connected three of the
18:08
matches back to common ancestor William
18:10
Burke's, born in 1743. Paribon
18:13
continued to monitor weekly uploads and was
18:15
able to progress the analysis when someone
18:17
sharing 195 centimorgans of DNA with the
18:21
subject, the equivalent of a second cousin
18:23
once removed, entered his or her
18:25
DNA into the family tree DNA database.
18:28
This was a significantly closer relationship than
18:30
had previously been located, but
18:32
hopes were temporarily dashed when the
18:34
genealogist saw that the uploader had
18:36
an untraceable email address. A
18:39
search indicated that more than a dozen people
18:41
in the United States had the same name
18:43
that was attached to this email address and
18:45
the genealogist was not about to research every
18:47
one of their trees. So
18:49
they focused on one who lived in geographic
18:51
proximity to some of the other people in
18:53
the Burke family tree that the genealogist could
18:55
see. This eventually led Ms.
18:58
Wyatt to identify the 195 centimorgan
19:00
cousin whose mother's maiden name
19:03
was Kimsey. When
19:05
she had the name of the likely second
19:07
cousin once removed, Ms. Wyatt set to work
19:09
constructing a detailed tree for this new top
19:11
match, going back four generations
19:13
and then performing descendancy research to connect
19:15
in any other matches she knew were
19:17
related to John Doe. Since
19:20
she knew he had the surname Burke in his
19:22
heritage, she was careful to focus on that name
19:24
if and when it came up. While
19:27
she was constructing the family tree of this 195 centimorgan
19:30
second cousin once removed of John
19:32
Doe, she found a name in the
19:34
tree that stood out because it was somewhat unusual and she'd
19:36
seen it before. An ancestor of the
19:38
top match was a David Kimsey born in 1755. So
19:40
based on the suspected
19:44
relationship between the top match and
19:46
John Doe, Ms. Wyatt went
19:48
all the way back to match number
19:50
one's great-grandparents who were Lewis Kimsey born
19:52
1896 and Edna
19:54
Jones born 1897 and she
19:57
researched the descendants of that couple. She
19:59
found one one son, Edward Kimsey,
20:01
born 1916, who married a
20:03
Gladys Esteli Sweet, born 1921.
20:07
Gladys' mother, Cora's, made a name
20:09
with Birks. This was the aha
20:12
moment for the genealogist, who had been on the lookout
20:14
for that name. In looking at
20:16
Cora's parents, she learned that they were William
20:18
Benton Birks, born 1866, and
20:20
Laura Ellen Birks, born 1872. This
20:23
is a quote from a journal article Ms. Wyatt
20:26
co-wrote about the case for the Journal of Forensic
20:28
Sciences. Quote, the couple were
20:30
double second cousins twice removed to
20:32
each other through their shared ancestor,
20:34
David Birks, the son of William Birks, born
20:37
1743, the common
20:39
ancestor of genetic network number one, end
20:41
quote. Double second
20:43
cousins share not one, but two
20:45
pairs of great grandparents. Second
20:47
cousins typically share just one. Here
20:50
was the tangible impact of the pedigree
20:52
collapse I mentioned earlier. So
20:55
the triangulation between the Kimsey branch and the
20:57
Birks branch happened with the marriage of Edward
20:59
and Gladys Kimsey, which took place in 1938.
21:01
So Ms. Wyatt knew that John
21:03
Doe was almost
21:05
certainly a descendant from this union. Edward
21:08
and Gladys had two sons, both of whom were
21:10
still alive in the year that the
21:12
Marshall County, Alabama John Doe was discovered 1997. So
21:16
Ms. Wyatt turned to those sons,
21:18
sons, ie the grandsons of Gladys
21:20
and Edward. And that's when she
21:22
figured it out. One grandson was
21:24
M.I.A. Jeffrey Kimsey, born on February 7th,
21:27
1977, in
21:29
Santa Barbara, California, the parents, Monty
21:31
Kimsey and Bonnie Kimsey. He
21:34
lived in San Marcos, California, and would have
21:36
been 20 years old when Marshall County
21:38
John Doe was discovered. Ms.
21:41
Wyatt's August 2022 report to the
21:43
Marshall County Sheriff's Office pointed the
21:45
investigators toward a person in Madison,
21:47
Tennessee, whom she suspected was a
21:49
close relative of John Doe, theorized
21:51
to be Jeffrey Kimsey. Madison
21:54
is in driving distance of Marshall
21:56
County and on September 2nd, Marshall
21:58
County investigator Willie Orr contacted this
22:00
relative and the relative put him in
22:02
touch with Jeffrey's parents who are alive
22:04
and living in California. Investigator
22:07
Orr made contact with a Detective
22:09
Adam Alegoria at the Santa Barbara
22:11
County Sheriff's Office. Detective
22:14
Alegoria went to the address listed for
22:16
the suspected parents of Jeffrey Kimsey and
22:18
obtained DNA samples. Kinship
22:20
testing of both parents by the State
22:22
Forensic Lab proved that their son Jeffrey
22:25
Kimsey was the Marshall County John Doe.
22:28
So what do we know about Jeffrey? Not
22:30
very much. His family has been
22:33
in regular contact with the Marshall County
22:35
investigators but has not spoken publicly. Although
22:37
he left his family at some point, they
22:40
never filed a missing person's report for him.
22:42
They believed he was a voluntary missing and
22:44
that he was out there living his life. The
22:47
sheriff described their reaction at learning of
22:49
his demise 26 years earlier as distraught.
22:52
Jeffrey's grandmother's 2011 obituary
22:54
listed him as a living relative but
22:56
unlike all the other relatives there was
22:59
no location listed for Jeffrey illustrating
23:01
that his family believed he was alive, whereabouts
23:04
unknown. When his body was
23:06
found 2,000 miles from home in Union Grove
23:08
in 1997 he had recently turned 20 years old. We
23:10
know that
23:13
Jeffrey resembled the phenotype prepared by Parabon.
23:16
San Marcos High School yearbook photos from 1993, 1994, and 1995
23:18
show that he had a prominent chin
23:23
and blue eyes. In
23:26
a May 2023 press conference, Sheriff
23:29
Sims described the case and difficulties
23:31
associated with identifying Jeffrey because of
23:33
the removed body parts and deliberate
23:35
obscuring of the forensic evidence. Now
23:38
we have an identity that we can backtrack he
23:40
said. That's huge but at the same time it
23:42
just makes us work harder. There
23:45
have been many investigators who have worked on this
23:47
case over the course of many years and some of them
23:49
are with us today. I know they
23:52
would like to see this case solved but
23:54
having a positive identification will help us get
23:56
closer to solving this case. I
23:58
want to thank all the investigators, the people at the Parabon,
24:00
who worked tirelessly on this case,
24:02
the Alabama Department of Forensic Science, Marshall
24:05
County Coroner's Office, Marshall County District
24:07
Attorney's Office, and everyone involved. The
24:11
sheriff went on to acknowledge that they did not know
24:13
how Jeffrey Kimsey got to Alabama, nor
24:15
did they have details on his work history,
24:17
his personal life, his travel. He said, we
24:19
are asking the public who might know Jeffrey
24:21
Kimsey, who he hung out with, his locations,
24:23
and so on. If anyone has any
24:26
information about this case from that time period, please
24:28
call the sheriff's office. Then
24:31
Sheriff Sims ended with an announcement. Quote, today
24:34
we want to announce that we do have
24:36
persons of interest in this case and are
24:38
actively pursuing those leads. Also, we will be
24:40
working with Parabon on DNA that we have
24:42
recently become aware of related to items found
24:45
at the scene. End quote. Reading
24:48
between the lines, it sounds like they
24:50
used advanced DNA extraction technology, perhaps the
24:52
EMVEC, to obtain DNA off Kimsey's clothing,
24:55
the ropes, the air fresheners, or something
24:57
else. They intend to use
24:59
it in hopes of finding a suspect's matching DNA.
25:02
They sound hopeful that Kimsey's case will be
25:04
solved. Marshall County
25:06
District Attorney Jennifer Bray also spoke at the
25:08
press conference. She said, we hope
25:11
that the public comes forward with more information. We
25:13
are eager to hold accountable the person that's
25:16
responsible for the homicide of this person. Investigators
25:19
are now asking anyone who may have known
25:21
Jeffrey Kimsey to contact the sheriff's office
25:23
at 256-582-2034. Recently
