0:14

It's something we've all felt at a point, but it can also be tough to talk about.

0:25

when one friend feels left out or threatened by the bond between two others.

0:31

We're here to help you understand why jealousy happens.

0:35

And give you some tips on how to handle it.

0:38

1:17

Big Dreamers, today I want to tell you about something I saw happen at school.

1:22

These are three friends in my school. Let's call them Mia, Sam, and Lily.

1:27

They always played together and they had so much fun.

1:31

But one day I noticed that Mia and Lily were spending lots

1:34

of time together without Sam.

1:36

Big Dreamers. They were playing games at recess and sitting together at lunch, and

1:41

Sam started looking really sad.

1:44

One afternoon, I saw Sam talking to Mia.

1:47

Sam was upset and said, I don't want you to play with Lily anymore.

1:52

I feel left out. Mia looked surprised and didn't know what to say.

1:57

Big dreamers, have you ever even saw something like this?

2:02

It's not a good feeling to be left out, right?

2:06

Sometimes it happens. Sometimes we get scared that our friends might be liking somebody more than us.

2:14

Today we're going to talk about why we feel this way and how we can handle it.

2:19

So nobody feels left out. So why do we feel jealous sometimes?

2:25

Well, jealousy often comes from the feeling of insecure or afraid that we

2:31

might lose someone important to us. When we see our friends getting close to someone else, it can make us worry

2:39

that they like a person more than us.

2:43

This can make us feel threatened and scared that we might be left out.

2:48

Let's think about Sam's situation. Sam might feel threatened or insecure about Mia's friendship with Lily, because

2:55

Sam worries that Mia might start liking Lily more and spending less time with Sam.

3:04

Sam might be afraid that Mia and Lily will have more fun together

3:09

and leave Sam out of their plans.

3:12

These feelings are natural, but if they aren't talked about,

3:16

they can cause a lot of problems.

3:19

When jealousy creeps into a friendship, it can have some pretty negative effects.

3:26

Friends might start arguing more. Or they might feel hurt and confused.

3:31

Sometimes jealousy can even cause us friends to stop talking to each other.

3:36

Here are a few ways jealousy can hurt friendships.

3:40

First, jealousy can lead to arguments and misunderstandings.

3:45

If Sam starts to feel jealous but doesn't talk about it, Sam might get angry with

3:51

Mia and Lily without explaining it. Second, when friends don't understand why someone is feeling jealous,

3:58

they might feel hurt and confused.

4:01

Mia might not understand why Sam doesn't want Mia to play with Lily, which can

4:08

lead to hurt feelings on all sides.

4:11

Third, in some cases jealousy can cause friends to drift apart or

4:16

even stop being friends altogether.

4:19

If the jealousy isn't addressed, Sam, Mia, and Lily might all

4:23

end up feeling hurt and alone. So what can Sam do to handle these feelings in a healthy way?

4:30

Here are some tips. Talk about it.

4:33

Sam should try to talk to Mia about how she's feeling instead

4:38

of saying don't play with Lily. Sam could say, I feel left out when you play with Lily without me.

4:45

This way, Mia understands how Sam feels without her feeling blamed or attacked.

4:53

Include everyone. Sam should try to include Lily in their activities too.

5:00

Instead of just seeing Lily as a threat, Sam could try to see Lily as a new friend.

5:08

This way, all three can have fun together.

5:14

Sam, Mia, and Lily could find activities they all enjoy.

5:18

By doing these things together, they can have strength in their friendship

5:23

and make sure everybody feels included.

5:26

Spend time together. Sam could also suggest spending some time with Mia one on one.

5:34

This way, Sam can feel reassured about their friendship and have a

5:38

chance to talk about their feelings.

5:41

It's really important for friends to talk openly and honestly with each other.

5:47

When we share our feelings, we can help understand friends better.

5:53

This can make our friendship stronger and help us avoid misunderstandings.

5:58

By talking about jealousy and finding ways to include everyone, we can make

6:03

sure our friends feel valued and happy.

6:08

So remember that it's okay to feel jealous sometimes, but it's important to talk

6:13

about finding ways to include everyone by being honest and understanding.

6:19

We can't keep our friendship strong and make no one feel left out.

6:23

And here's a challenge for you this week.

6:27

Next time you see a friend left out, try to include them in what you're doing.

6:31

Whether it's inviting them to play a game, join your group at lunch,

6:36

or work on a project together. Find a way to make everyone feel welcome.

6:42

Then, come back and tell us how it went.

6:46

We'd love to hear your stories and ideas on how to handle jealousy and

6:50

make sure all friends feel valued.
