0:07

Talk to us today about life and

0:09

serious illness cover. Now, latest figures

0:11

from the deposit return scheme show

0:13

that 75 million containers were returned

0:15

in the month of May, which

0:18

was more than February, March and

0:20

April combined. On average last month

0:22

around 2.5 million

0:24

containers were returned every day, but

0:26

one group of hospital porters in

0:29

Cork University Hospital is using the

0:31

deposit return scheme to raise thousands

0:33

of euro for a good cause.

0:35

They're called the three Johnnies and

0:37

one of them joins me now.

0:39

John Collins, good evening and you're

0:41

very welcome to Drive Time this evening. Good

0:44

evening, Brian. So, John, tell me where did

0:46

this idea come from and what exactly have you been doing?

0:49

Tell them, Brian, it happened as a fun thing

0:52

and we were there one night before we were

0:54

on a night and

0:56

we decided when they came on stream,

0:58

we said, lads, what we'll do is

1:00

we clicked all the bottles

1:02

in our walls and at

1:04

the end of our month, over nights, we'll

1:07

have a Chinese for ourselves. We'll give

1:09

ourselves a treat. So, I went home

1:12

and they thought about us and I was thinking

1:14

to myself, lads, no,

1:16

this can't happen. This is because as

1:18

the money we are benefiting out of,

1:21

the hospital are paying for the bus to the side, so it wouldn't be

1:23

fair. So, I think, I said, what should

1:26

we do? I said, we give it to the C-Waste charity. So,

1:29

the lads went on board, so I joined Lennon

1:31

who takes the rubbish from the fifth floor down

1:33

to the ground floor. So, he

1:35

separated all the bottles for us down

1:37

in the corridor and we bagged

1:39

them. So, John Keenan then would

1:42

be working in the knee department and the outpatient department. So,

1:44

he bagged all the bags down and he clicked them all

1:46

off there, down there off the

1:48

housekeeping and

1:51

the nurses and the doctors. Everyone came on board. So, he

1:54

covers the GA and GB wars, GA,

1:56

the psychology and cancer wars and they

1:58

covered the puffin and the lady

2:00

bars and 5B. So

2:02

we went to all these bars and we asked

2:04

them would they just keep the bars aside for

2:06

us. So they did. So

2:09

on the first week we collected 355 euro so

2:11

we gave

2:13

it to CUH charity. Second

2:15

week we were up to 820 so we said

2:18

lads this is doing great. So

2:21

we just continued so we're up over

2:23

2,200 euro now raised from the bottles.

2:25

Yeah and that's the moment collecting around

2:27

12,000 bottles of it. I'd

2:31

say we're up to 15,000 bottles though. We

2:34

were up to 11,452 last Tuesday. So we're after

2:40

depositing this morning. I got 47

2:42

euro and my friend John Keenan

2:44

got another 77 euro. So

2:47

there's a lot of bags. But

2:49

the thing about is that when we're going up

2:51

to the bottles people are

2:53

saying to us we don't name a god you get all the

2:55

bottles. And I said I was by

2:58

some name with John Collins and they says I worked

3:00

with the portal to CUH and they says we

3:02

get all the stuff we said the port

3:05

and stuff the catering stuff the housekeeping stuff

3:08

the doctors and nurses came on board so

3:10

they give us the bottles to read the

3:12

puzzle and this lady came along to

3:14

me she says she looked take

3:16

them she sheared the bag about and she said she goes

3:18

to the receipt and I said put that towards the charity.

3:21

So I said no no no no it's just not like that.

3:23

I said I want to be like that but a lot of people

3:25

are doing that moment to us. So

3:27

it's fantastic. And briefly John you're looking to

3:29

spread the gospel of this initiative you want

3:31

businesses to come forward with bottles don't you

3:34

across Leesign. Yeah we'd love it.

3:36

We'd love it because there's so many charities out there

3:38

looking for money so it's a great idea for children

3:40

to start saving even for if they were on a

3:42

school trip. So just get a

3:44

few bottles together and pay for the we

3:46

say the trip children or more be fantastic

3:48

with just saving and taking a lot of

3:50

pressure off the parents as well to know with the money. So

3:54

lots to run there. John

3:56

Collins of the three Johnnys better

3:58

not mention the two Johnnys. around here. Thanks

4:01

very much for joining us on DriveTime this evening.
