Another building with a deep history in the area, is the Baker Peters House is the site of a famous Confederate-Union feud. Dr. Harvey Baker, was the owner of the Baker Peters House at the time, was shot and killed by Union Troops. His son, Abner Baker, who fought for the Confederates at the time of the war was furious upon hearing this and decided to seek revenge for his father when returned home from the war. While doing so, Abner had an altercation with a gentleman named William Hall, who may had ties to his father’s death. Before Abner could be tried for the altercation an angry mob of Union Supporters broke him out of jail and hung him in a tree in downtown Knoxville. Since then, the Baker Peters House has been used for a wide variety of functions, serving as a restaurant, bar and jazz club over the years. Over the years, the house has been many places including a dental practice which is still functional since 1989.
