RATING
I'm intrigued by the mystery, but what I really love about Finding Pattersby is the deviously witty writing. I'm only a few episodes in and this series has already become a 'top-of-the-queue' 'listen-as-soon-as-it-drops' show for me. The story is accompanied by an excellent synth-driven soundtrack and brought to life by a fantastic cast. Every so often you'll come across a piece of art that vibrates the same way as you. For me, Finding Pattersby is that art. Our world needs more weird comedies like this one. A strikingly potent debut from a first-time Audio Fiction creator, I can't wait to hear where this story is headed.
How to describe Finding Pattersby ?? Ryan, ghost writer extraordinaire, has been thoroughly wronged by his thieving famous-author boss and so, obviously, he starts a podcast about it. I went in to this show curious and I am currently sitting somewhere between amused bemusement and absolute delirium. Fans of weird fiction absolutely must listen to Finding Pattersby - there is literally nothing else like it.
This show scratches my great itch for the strange. Through its strong character work and writing and its well executed sound design, Finding Pattersby launches you into a world that is more distorted than our own. You never know quite who Ryan (the main character) is going to run into, but every character is an absolute delight. On top of the great characters there is also the engaging central mystery of what exactly happened to Luke Pattersby. It would be easy for a show like this to overplay its hand, but Ryan (the creator) does a fantastic job of weaving the humor, mystery, and heart together in a way that is totally pleasing. I, for one, can not wait to hear the rest.
This is like a re-imagining (or pastiche or parody) of the heady days of 90’s best-selling thriller authors like John Grisham, Michael Crichton or Dan Brown (or the fictional Luke Pattersby), where these authors are depicted as rockstars or messiahs, and their fans as cult members calling themselves “the children of the thrill” and getting high on coffee. There’s a lot of narration here, but the actors all amazing, and the monologues are very well written. Intelligent, literal, weird and surreal, this is a fascinating piece of audio drama. It reminds me of “Fight Club” in terms of irony and surrealness, so if you like that sort of thing (which I absolutely do) then you’ll probably like this.
