In this extremely long episode, our queer literary friends Joseph and Vee explore the 1891 novel Left to Themselves by Edward Prime-Stevenson. Potentially the first real queer YA story to be published, Left to Themselves is a novel that had been forgotten by most until its most recent edition. Spoiler: It was an extremely wild ride. Our hosts discuss the author in detail, give you a full rundown of what happens in the story, and get completely sappy about the importance of this book in terms of the history of Queer YA. It's long but it's worth it.
Content warning: discussion of a five-year age gap between the two main characters, discussion of predatory behavior of an older man directed towards a twelve year old boy
