“14 Great Cake Tasting Tips” Here!

The tastiest part of planning your wedding is shopping for wedding cakes. A cake tasting is a great time to have your cake consultation with any potential bakery vendor. It will give you the opportunity to discuss your dream wedding cake. Check with the baker to see if there are any tasting fees, and if these fees are applied to a cake order.

Don’t make the mistake of scheduling all your tastings on the same day. And, just like all other aspect of the wedding planning process, it is very important that you take detail notes while tasting cakes. A cake tasting is not just sampling the cake, it also serves as a consultation with the cake designer to ensure they can produce your dream cake design, so don’t rush through it. Bakeries usually have four to five tastings a week; and the average tasting takes between two to three hours, so plan accordingly.

A tasting should include an assortment of small cake portions in various flavors, samples of frostings and/or fondants, and samples of fillings. Three to five flavors are recommended. Remember, too many flavors will make the decision much more difficult. Be sure to taste each item separately so your palate is not confused or overwhelmed by other flavors. Just like wine tasting, you should cleanse your palate with water between each different item. Pay close attention to both flavor and texture. Once you have tasted each item individually, you can then mix and match to find your perfect combination of cake, frosting and filling. Bakeries are professionals and can guide you through flavor pairing. Each baker will have their own signature flavor pairings, but it’s your wedding so don’t be afraid to try random combinations of flavors.

If you are planning on appliques or embellishing for your cake, be sure and taste those as well. Check to see that they are not too hard and not difficult to cut or bite; as some of your wedding guests may have dental issues that an embellishment or applique can cause problems. However, your baker may have suggestions for how embellishments or appliques can be used on only a portion of the cake.

The cake tasting is a great place to get the groom involved, but remember, while tasting cakes is fun, it’s not a party. Usually the bride, groom and a parent or two attend a cake tasting. Check with the baker to see how many people can be accommodated for a tasting, and if there are fees for additional people.
