Declining female participation in IT education and professional work is a complex social problem with implications for education and industry. The Women in Information Technology project (www.winitproject.com) established by Liisa von Hellens and Sue Nielsen in 1995 at Griffith University has studied the problem in schools, universities and industry, and implemented strategies to address the continuing decline. The WinIT team has utilised their research experience in Australia and overseas, in publications, university teaching, short training programmes, IT consulting and community projects as well as chairing and participating in equity and policy committees in IT education and work.
