NAIDOC WEEK
We respectfully acknowledge the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, who have traditional connections to the land now known as Glen Eira. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge and uphold their continuing relationship to this land.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners are advised that the following program may contain voices of people who have died.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, because of the pandemic, we are celebrating NAIDOC week right now, from the 8-15 November.
NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.
Today on Glen Eira Working Together we have two inspirational guests.
Our first is Media Presenter and Educator SHELLY WARE. Shelley works at the coalface developing curriculum and content to improve the teaching of Indigenous Culture and History in our schools. We ask Shelly about what she’s been working on as well as about her love of AFL and empowering young people.
Our second guest is Managing Director of Clothing the Gap and Spark Health LAURA THOMPSOM (at 31.00mins). Laura tell us about how Clothing the Gap came to be, what their mission is and about their Free the Flag campaign.
