Dr. Frehiwot Nigatu Biographical Background:

Dr. Frehiwot is a medical doctor with a Master’s degree in Public Health. She has more than 10 years of experience in public health program management and implementation in health focusing on disease prevention and control, Primary Health Care, and health systems strengthening. She has extensive experience in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment, and leadership of programs. She has worked on different training materials design and development for Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health and different non-governmental organizations including countries outside of Ethiopia. She has also worked in collaboration and partnership with both domestic and international health development and research organizations and individuals, including participating in the coordination of impactful activities including strategy development, research proposal write-up and coordination, national guidelines, framework, and implementation manual developments.

She is currently the Executive Director for the International Institute of primary health care in Ethiopia. Before joining IPHC-E, she worked as director of community service delivery in a USAID-funded project at Project HOPE-Ethiopia for two years and as a policy and health system strengthening advisor for six months in the same organization. During that time, she oversaw the program implementation for the project and took part in different proposals and grant write-ups. she also provided technical support for other countries where Project HOPE had programs, including in Namibia. Before joining Project HOPE Ethiopia, Frehiwot worked at the Ministry of Health for five years in different positions including as the national HIV/AIDS program focal person, HIV/AIDS prevention and control team lead, and Assistant Director for disease prevention and control. She coordinated major national programs like HIV, TB, malaria, Neglected Tropical Diseases, and Non-Communicable Diseases for two years.  In addition, she has served as a board member of different civil society organizations in Ethiopia.

Her principal interest areas include leadership in health, primary health care, health systems strengthening, and gender equity. She has broad experience in overseeing national programs and additional work experience in coordinating and chairing technical working groups, task forces, and ad-hoc committees.
