She was in her 40s, in the middle of plentiful opportunities to be aware of the world, when she started to feel her purpose in life in the form of emotional clues. How did Fran begin this journey? It started with a mission to open minds and hearts. When your mind and heart is open to something new, you're paying attention to yourself more and more. Fran and her team started to work with middle-school girls about 20 years ago, handpicking and counseling those interested in leadership and theater, inducting them into a summer program to teach them the skills to become better leaders and performers, and giving their all towards this idea despite them not having a theater, to begin with. Then they started building plays, asking women if they had a story to tell, and helping them craft their stories if they did. Through renting spaces, practicing in people's backyards, dining rooms, law offices, churches, and anywhere they could, they started growing as a community and began building an audience for themselves. The idea was to give women a stage to perform and express themselves through the power of storytelling.

The Fran Powers you’re hearing about is the Founder and Executive Director at the Powerstories Theatre Inc. She debuted with the PowerStories Theatre agency in November 2000. And by August of 2001, her group had performed at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Centre to sold-out audiences. By 2010, they had won the prestigious Arts and Humanity Awards presented by Michelle Obama at the White House. The group boasts of a rich history and a proud list of accomplishments garnered over nearly two decades of existence!
