Dead Time Stories.

1:39

Professional athletes do a lot of traveling

1:41

during their respective seasons. This

1:44

means several nights in hotel rooms. Some

1:48

athletes even live in hotel rooms in their

1:50

team's hometown because they have homes elsewhere.

1:55

With the number of haunted hotels out there,

1:57

it isn't surprising that there are some stories.

2:00

stories floating around from athletes and

2:02

their haunted experiences during their stays.

2:04

In this episode,

2:07

you will learn about a few haunting experiences

2:09

from Tampa Bay race baseball players

2:11

at the Renaissance Venoy Hotel

2:14

in St. Petersburg, Florida.

2:41

The Palacio Palm-lined Renaissance

2:43

Venoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida

2:46

was built in the roaring 20s for film

2:48

stars, playboys,

2:50

and professional athletes. But

2:53

now it seems that it's home to some uninvited

2:56

and rather unruly guests.

2:59

In an interview for Hunted Baseball,

3:02

relief pitcher Scott Williamson of the Tampa

3:04

Bay's local team, the Rays, told

3:07

author Dan Gordon of the night he agreed

3:09

to play host to a visiting team

3:11

staying at the Venoy in June 2003. After

3:16

climbing into bed and turning out the lights, Williamson

3:19

glanced through the parted curtains and

3:22

thought he saw a faint luminous glow

3:24

near the pool.

3:27

At the sight of this, a tingling sensation

3:30

electrified his entire body as

3:32

if someone were watching him. It

3:35

unnerved him, but he tried to

3:37

shrug it off and get some sleep. Rolling

3:40

over to his front, he suddenly

3:42

felt pressure as if someone

3:44

was pushing down on him, which gave him

3:46

trouble breathing. With an effort,

3:48

he turned over on his back, but

3:50

he still felt as if someone were sitting on him.

3:54

When he opened his eyes, he saw a shadowy

3:56

figure standing by the window. There

3:58

was a man dressing along with a man.

3:59

long coat that seemed to belong

4:02

to the 1930s or 40s. And

4:04

just like that, then it was gone.

4:09

Williamson was so distressed that he

4:11

immediately phoned his wife, who

4:13

worked at a nearby hospital, and asked

4:15

her if there were any medical reason that might

4:17

explain the pressure on his chest.

4:20

He was relieved to hear that there was

4:23

unlikely anything to be physically wrong,

4:26

as he had no other symptoms. But

4:28

the feeling of unease just wouldn't leave

4:30

him.

4:33

The next day, after a restless night's

4:35

sleep, he asked a friend to research the

4:37

history of the hotel to find out if there was a basis

4:40

for the phantom presence. And indeed,

4:42

there was.

4:45

The previous owner of the property, who had

4:47

lived in the house before it had been converted

4:49

into a hotel, had died there

4:51

after a fire. His name,

4:53

incredibly, was also Williamson.

5:01

It wasn't the first sighting of the shadowy figure

5:04

at the Venoy. The very

5:06

next day, at 5am, picture

5:09

Frank Velasquez of the Pittsburgh Pirates

5:11

awoke to see a transparent figure standing

5:13

by the desk at the window. Velasquez

5:16

later described him as being a sandy-haired

5:19

and blue-eyed man wearing a long-sleeved

5:22

white shirt and khaki-colored trousers.

5:26

By this manner of dress, and his haircut,

5:28

gave the picture of the distinct impression that

5:31

the visitor came from a previous age.

5:33

To

5:34

make sure he was not dreaming, Velasquez closed

5:36

his eyes for a moment, then opened them again. Sure

5:39

enough, the man was still standing

5:42

there. But being travel-weary, Velasquez just

5:44

turned over and went back to sleep.

5:47

It was only later that he learned

5:49

of Williamson's story, which he felt

5:51

confirmed his own experience.

5:55

The fact that it lined up with someone's story

5:57

that I never knew anything about just

5:59

kind of helped me out. me know that it was real," stated

6:02

Velasquez. But

6:04

apparently that wasn't the only sighting of the

6:06

old gentleman that night. The

6:08

team's assistant was standing in the hall, trying

6:11

to fiddle his room key into the lock,

6:14

and a man in a tailored suit passed

6:16

soundlessly by, looking like an

6:19

extra from a Humphrey Bogart movie. Unable

6:22

to open the door, the assistant turned to

6:24

ask the old man for help, but the corridor

6:27

was empty. When

6:29

these stories began to circulate amongst the

6:31

players, several elected

6:33

to move out, while others chose

6:35

to commute from their home to the ballpark

6:38

and back every day, rather than have

6:40

to sleep overnight in the hotel.

6:43

The wife of one player fled with her

6:45

children in the middle of the night when the taps

6:48

in the bathroom repeatedly turned

6:50

themselves on.

6:53

There were also numerous stories of flickering lights,

6:56

slamming doors, clothes that mysteriously

6:58

moved from the wardrobe to the bed, and

7:00

electrical cables which, inexplicably,

7:03

pulled themselves out of the wall sockets and

7:05

wrapped themselves around appliances.

7:10

But

7:13

without a doubt, the most unsettling story

7:15

was told by Devil Ray Pitcher, John

7:18

Switzer and his wife, who were awoken

7:20

one night in their room on the fifth floor

7:23

by the sound of scratching coming from

7:25

the wall behind the headboard.

7:27

They assumed it was a rat, but after

7:30

a few minutes it stopped and they went back

7:32

to sleep. Fifteen

7:34

minutes later it began again, but this

7:36

time it was so loud that the Switzer's leapt

7:39

out of bed and turned on the lights.

7:41

To their horror and utter astonishment,

7:45

they saw what appeared to be the painting

7:47

above their bed come to life.

7:50

It was a simple garden scene depicting

7:52

a Victorian lady holding a basket

7:54

with her right hand and her left resting

7:56

on her chin. But now her

7:59

left hand was scratched.

7:59

scratching desperately at the glass as

8:02

if it were trying to get out.

8:04

Switzer and his wife exited the room

8:07

faster than

8:08

you can say Scooby-Doo. A

8:30

zombie heard

8:32

once that

8:34

zombie heard

8:37

his head. Daddy

8:40

asked to hack off the devil's

8:43

head and if that

8:46

devil's head

8:48

gets hacked. Daddy

8:51

asked to hunt down a werewolf

8:54

back and when

8:57

that werewolf back

8:59

goes down. Daddy

9:02

asked to slaughter an

9:05

evil clown and after

9:08

the evil clown

9:11

is killed. Daddy

9:13

asked to take on a vampire

9:16

guild. So

9:24

hush little baby

9:26

don't you cry

9:29

or daddy and

9:31

the whole family

9:34

will die.
