What's up, sandwich heads? Today on Steve-O's Sandwich Reviews,

0:03

we've got the tips and tricks to the best

0:05

sandwich order. And it all starts with this little

0:07

guy right here, Pepsi Zero Sugar.

0:09

Farshal to Pastrami, craving a Cubano. Yeah,

0:11

sounds delicious, but boom! Add the crisp,

0:13

refreshing taste of Pepsi Zero Sugar and

0:15

cue the fireworks. Lunch, dinner, or late

0:18

night, it'll be a sandwich worth celebrating,

0:20

trust me. Your boy's eaten a lot

0:22

of sandwiches in his day, and the

0:24

one thing I can say with absolute fact, ah,

0:28

every bite is better with Pepsi. The

0:30

future is a hefty responsibility and not

0:32

one that we take lightly, but then

0:34

taking things lightly has never been what

0:36

hepsy is about. That's why we've created

0:38

the Hepsy Renew Program that turns hard

0:40

to recycle plastics into valuable resources like

0:42

park benches and building materials. To participate,

0:44

simply fill up an orange hefty renew

0:46

bag with accepted items, tie it up,

0:48

and drop it in with your regular

0:50

recycling. That's it, it's that easy. It's

0:53

time to rethink recycling with renew. Particular

I am and this is Kelly. Kelly.

2:25

On this episode we're going to hit a city

2:27

and Colorado that's up in the mountains. A lot

2:29

of people are probably familiar with it when it

2:32

comes to skiing and that is aspin. And this

2:34

is the hotel to Rome. Looking.

2:36

Forward to it. Are you ready to go

2:38

back? I am ready. Hotel

2:51

to Rome is located in the third of

2:54

the city of Aspen in the Rocky Mountains

2:56

of Colorado. The. Luxury Hotel

2:58

provide high end amenities in a

3:00

truly historic building. The hotel

3:02

was built by a man who wanted it to

3:04

be a model of excellence for years to come.

3:07

And it has been that. And

3:09

it also has been something else. Dislodging,

3:12

Is apparently so luxurious that some

3:14

guess never want to leave. Ever.

3:18

The. Hotel Jerome is said to be haunted.

3:20

Join us as we explore the

3:22

history and hauntings of Hotel Jerome.

3:54

The precious metals silver as at the heart

3:56

of the development of many of the mountain

3:58

towns and Colorado that still survive. today.

4:01

The Colorado Silver Boom began in 1879 when a load

4:03

was discovered in the town

4:05

of Leadville. This followed the Colorado

4:07

Gold Rush of 1859 and it was more

4:10

lucrative. When the Silver Boom was finished,

4:12

82 million worth of silver

4:14

had been mined. The

4:18

city of Aspen started as a summer hunting

4:20

camp for the youths named Ute City, but

4:22

once the Silver Boom started, white settlers

4:24

poured in. Most of them were

4:26

miners and before long 12,000 of

4:29

them were calling Aspen home. Wow!

4:31

The town was named Aspen because of

4:33

the abundance of, of course, Aspen's in the area

4:35

and I used to love going up to see

4:37

them turn during this time of the year in

4:39

the fall. The Hotel Jerome has

4:41

its roots in the Silver Boom as well. The hotel

4:44

was built during the heart of the

4:46

Silver Boom in 1889 by a man

4:48

who was heavily invested in silver mining,

4:50

Jerome B. Wheeler. The Silver Boom

4:52

went bust eventually and Aspen went through

4:54

a period called the quiet years and

4:57

then in the late 1940s Aspen saw

4:59

a renaissance with skiing and a new

5:01

developer named Walter Pepke who redeveloped many

5:04

of the properties. Today Aspen

5:06

is a playground for the rich and famous.

5:09

Through it all, the Hotel Jerome has continued

5:11

to mostly thrive save for a

5:13

few abandoned years. As

5:15

Diane mentioned, Jerome Wheeler had built the

5:17

hotel. He was born in 1841 in Troy, New

5:19

York. His parents

5:22

Mary Jones Emerson and Daniel Barker

5:24

Wheeler were both from Massachusetts originally.

5:27

They eventually moved the family to Waterford,

5:30

New York. Fun fact, Waterford

5:32

is home to the largest annual

5:34

tugboat festival and

5:36

I love tugboats. They're so fun and

5:39

Jerome attended school there. He liked

5:41

engineering and got involved in mechanical engineering

5:43

and machinery. By the

5:45

time he was 20, the Civil War had

5:48

started and he joined the fight enlisting with

5:50

the 6th Regiment, New York volunteer cavalry. He

5:53

was very successful working his way up to

5:55

2nd Lieutenant and then Colonel. An

5:58

act of heroism got him demoted shortly. thereafter.

6:00

A regiment of Union

6:02

soldiers were locked in behind enemy lines

6:04

and in desperate need of supplies. Wheeler's

6:08

superiors decided that it was too dangerous to

6:10

get the supplies to these men. Wheeler,

6:12

however, was committed to helping them and

6:15

he went against orders, successfully bringing supplies

6:17

to the men who were starving. After

6:20

the demotion, Wheeler left the Army.

6:23

Wheeler worked several jobs as a bookkeeper

6:25

in Troy and then New York City

6:28

joining Holt and Company in 1869 where

6:30

he eventually was made partner. Wheeler

6:32

met Harriet Macy Valentine during this time and the

6:35

couple was married in 1870. And

6:38

yes, the name Macy means that she is related

6:40

to the family that founded Macy's. She

6:42

was the niece of Roland Hussey Macy who

6:44

started R.H. Macy & Company. Wheeler

6:47

eventually became a 45% partner in the company

6:49

and stayed with it until 1888

6:52

when competition from other department stores began to

6:54

grow. He and Harriet decided to

6:56

make a trip to Colorado in 1883 and

6:59

they fell in love with the state. Wheeler

7:01

had heard about the vast mining operations in Aspen

7:03

and Leadville and he decided to buy into them.

7:06

The name Wheeler would eventually become synonymous with

7:09

Aspen as he developed many parts of the

7:11

town. Wheeler began with

7:13

building a tramway for an Aspen mine

7:15

that made the transportation of the ore

7:17

easier. The silver needed to be

7:19

smelted after it was mined and so he built a

7:21

smelter at the base of the mountain. He

7:24

started the Creases Gold Mining and Milling Company

7:26

of which he served as president. He

7:29

invested in the Colorado Midland Railway and

7:31

built the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen.

7:34

He also built a bank and the Wheeler

7:36

Scholar Test which was a home where he

7:38

never actually lived. And then he

7:40

built the Hotel Jerome which bears his name.

7:43

The Hotel Jerome was not Wheeler's idea.

7:45

He first offered to finance the project

7:48

and loaned $60,000 to two Kansas innkeepers

7:50

Bixby and Phillips who wanted to rival

7:52

the Ritz in Paris. Wow!

7:54

That's a big big aspiration.

7:57

Wheeler also donated the land upon which the hotel was

7:59

built. construction was not

8:01

going as Wheeler had wanted and cost began

8:03

to balloon. Bixby and Phillips

8:06

eventually skipped town and Wheeler took over the

8:08

entire project and was stuck investing more money

8:10

which came to a total cost of $150,000 that equals 1.6

8:12

million in today's dollars. The hotel rose to three stories

8:18

and was constructed from red bricks and

8:20

sandstone that came from nearby kilns. Handmade

8:23

Colorado tile was used to decorate

8:25

the interior and elaborate wall coverings

8:28

were installed. The first

8:30

elevator west of the Mississippi was also

8:32

installed in the hotel. Nice! The

8:34

completed hotel had 90 guest rooms and 15

8:37

bathrooms so not someplace you'd want to

8:39

stay Kelly. There has

8:41

to be a bathroom for one for me. I

8:44

just don't like community. And

8:47

to top all that off the hotel was

8:49

the first in the West to have electricity.

8:52

How many hotels have we heard this about?

8:54

The grand opening was celebrated with a ball

8:56

and banquet and every room was lit by

8:59

electric lights. These early

9:01

years in the late 19th century were booming

9:03

for the hotel. Stars of

9:05

the stage and opera, politicians and the

9:07

very rich all flocked to the hotel

9:09

Jerome. The invention of the

9:12

Pullman's sleeping car made train travel a

9:14

wonderful experience and helped bring in more

9:16

people to Aspen. Wheeler decided

9:18

to sell the hotel to a Denver

9:20

man named Fisk who soon found he

9:22

could not pay the taxes and Wheeler

9:24

eventually became the owner again. Hard

9:27

times were looming though as the silver market crashed

9:29

during the silver panic of 1893. Congress

9:32

repealed the Sherman Silver Purchase Act a year

9:35

later and the silver boom

9:37

was officially over. Colorado

9:39

Mountain towns began to crash after this

9:41

with many people leaving town and stores

9:43

going out of business. Wheeler

9:46

was hit hard as well and had to

9:48

declare bankruptcy eventually in 1903 and he lost

9:51

the hotel Jerome in 1910 unable to

9:53

pay the taxes for the building. He

9:56

died in 1918 in magnitude Springs. The

10:00

traveling Syrian-American drummer, Mansur

10:02

Elisha, had come to Aspen and he took

10:05

a job as bartender at the hotel. He

10:07

bought the hotel in 1911 for the amount of

10:09

the back taxes. Ooh, that's how you can

10:11

come scooping in and get something of a

10:14

good deal. Yeah, he did swoop right in. With

10:16

few visitors coming to Aspen, the hotel became

10:18

a boarding house. A flu epidemic

10:21

swept through the town in 1918, we know

10:23

which one that was, and the parlor

10:25

was used as a morgue since it was one of

10:27

the largest buildings in Aspen. The

10:30

year 1919 brought prohibition and Elisha decided

10:32

to change the bar into a soda

10:34

fountain to keep it going. Good idea. Huh,

10:37

that's creative. Liquor still worked its way

10:39

into some of the offerings and a concoction of

10:41

vanilla ice cream mixed into a shake and spiked

10:44

with bourbon became known as the Aspen Crud. Oh

10:46

my! Which is still served there

10:48

today. It sounds good except for

10:50

the name, although I don't think I've ever had bourbon. But

10:53

where'd you get crud? I mean, it

10:55

doesn't sound appetizing. It's the Aspen Crud. People

10:58

call it a fungus. When you're sick,

11:00

you say you have the creeping crud.

11:04

The population of Aspen declined and rented

11:06

the hotel Jerome was cheap. The

11:08

building suffered heavy neglect at this time and was

11:10

getting run down. Elisha died

11:12

in 1935 and left the hotel to his son. The

11:17

hotel Jerome was about to find itself in

11:19

the boom of another industry on its way

11:21

to Aspen. U.S. Olympic

11:23

Bobflutter Billy Fisk came to Aspen and

11:25

saw potential for a ski resort. He

11:28

bought land and formed the Highland Bavarian Ski

11:30

Club. The club built

11:32

the first ski lodge and the first two

11:34

ski guides for the lodge stayed at the

11:36

hotel Jerome during construction of the lodge for

11:38

five weeks. The U.S.

11:40

Army's 10th Mountain Division trained on skis in

11:43

the nearby area and they traveled down to

11:45

the Jerome one night where Lawrence Elisha offered

11:47

to let the soldiers stay and have a

11:49

steak dinner for a dollar whenever they liked.

11:53

And now a little break for a word about

11:55

one of our sponsors. sandwich

12:00

reviews we've got the tips and tricks to the best

12:02

sandwich order and it all starts with this little guy

12:04

right here. Pepsi Zero Sugar. Farshal

12:06

12:08

12:10

12:12

the fireworks. Lunch, dinner or late night

12:14

it'll be a sandwich we're celebrating. Trust

12:17

me, your boy's eaten a lot of

12:19

sandwiches in his day and the one

12:21

thing I can say with absolute fact,

12:24

every bite is better with Pepsi. The

12:27

future is a hefty responsibility and not one

12:29

that we take lightly but then taking things

12:31

lightly has never been what Pepsi is about.

12:34

That's why we created the Happy Renew program

12:36

that turns hard to recycle plastics into valuable

12:38

resources like sponges and

12:40

building materials. To participate, simply fill

12:42

up an Orange Pepsi Renew bag with

12:44

accepted items, tie it up and drop

12:46

it in with your regular recycling. That's

12:48

it, it's that easy. It's time to

12:50

rethink recycling with Renew. Particular valued

12:52

resources may vary by June if you see your

12:54

info available after you leave at hand. In

13:05

1946, US industrialist and

13:08

philanthropist Walter Pepke traveled to Aspen

13:10

with his wife. They

13:12

saw Victorian charm in the run-down buildings of

13:14

the town and they bought up many of

13:16

the properties which included Hotel Jerome. He

13:19

started the Aspen Institute and the Aspen

13:21

Skiing Company. His investing into

13:24

the Aspen Skiing Company allowed the completion of

13:26

the longest ski lift anywhere in the world.

13:29

Pepke started renovating Hotel Jerome and one

13:31

of his additions angered the locals. He

13:34

actually painted the beautiful red brick

13:37

exterior gray. Oh

13:39

my, a privacy. A

13:42

pool and pool house were added. After

13:44

the renovations, movie stars started pouring

13:46

in for vacation. Those stars included

13:48

Lana Turner, Gary Cooper and John

13:50

Wayne. But then the hotel hit

13:53

hard times again and shut its doors in 1956. John

13:55

Gilmore of

13:58

Michigan decided to buy the Hotel Jerome 1968.

14:01

The place had been closed for 12 years

14:03

and it was a wreck. The

14:05

walls had become unstable and the roof leaked.

14:08

Gilmore did not have the money to restore the

14:10

building and he made attempts to get investors to

14:12

help him. He was

14:14

only successful in paving the way for future

14:17

restoration at zoning meetings. Fun

14:19

fact, in 1977 serial

14:21

killer Ted Bundy escaped from

14:24

the Aspen courthouse. Yeah I

14:26

think he jumped out of a window

14:28

or something. Good grief. It

14:30

was not until 1984 that the

14:32

Hotel Jerome was bought by a group

14:34

of investors and they began renovations the

14:37

following year. The structural system was the

14:39

first thing to be restored. Heating

14:41

and plumbing was brought up to code.

14:43

The gray paint was sandblasted off the

14:45

exterior of the building and the interior

14:47

was refurbished to its former glory. The

14:50

J-bar was a popular spot with writer

14:52

Hunter S. Thompson and it was refurbished to

14:54

its original appearance in 1998. A

14:57

ballroom was also added along with a new rear

15:00

wing and guest rooms were refurbished in 2002.

15:02

When Thompson died

15:05

in 2005 his memorial was

15:07

held in the ballroom. That's how much he

15:09

hung out there. This

15:11

same year the Gaylord family bought the hotel for

15:13

33.7 million dollars. They

15:17

wanted to add a fourth floor but the city would

15:19

not approve the changes and kept delaying so the family

15:22

sold the hotel. The new owners

15:24

would get caught up in the Lehman Brothers fiasco

15:26

that occurred a few years ago and the

15:28

owners were foreclosed upon. Jerome

15:31

property LLC had conducted the foreclosure and

15:33

they took over the property. They

15:36

were mired for a couple years in lawsuits with

15:38

the city over taxes. The

15:40

Hotel Jerome is now under the

15:42

management of Obert's Resorts and they

15:44

conducted another renovation in 2012. Today

15:48

the hotel features standard rooms,

15:50

suites and luxury suites. There

15:52

is a weight room, two jacuzzis and

15:54

a heated outdoor pool and spa. The

15:57

J-bar is still here. Bad Harriet

15:59

is the name of another bar and

16:01

this is named for the wife of Jerome

16:04

Wheeler. I love that name for a

16:06

bar. Bad Harriet. Yeah. The

16:08

bar celebrates powerful women in history

16:10

through craft cocktails. It

16:12

really is an experience. The

16:15

garden offers a great view of Aspen

16:17

Mountain and offers menu items featuring local

16:19

meat from ranchers and cats from fishermen

16:21

and herbs and flowers and vegetables from

16:23

their own garden. Wines from

16:25

around the world are offered. Prospect

16:28

is the high-end restaurant that offers

16:30

an Epicurean journey. The living

16:32

room is the heartbeat of the Jerome and

16:34

a cozy intimate gathering place featuring small

16:37

bites and modern cocktails. Felix

16:39

Roasting Company was started in New York

16:41

City and is an eclectic coffee shop.

16:44

This is the only location outside of New

16:46

York City. The hotel

16:48

features something else that management does

16:51

not advertise. This hotel quite possibly

16:53

is haunted. As a matter

17:01

of fact, the folks at Aspen Walking

17:03

Tours claim it is the most haunted

17:05

location in Aspen. The

17:08

most active spirit in the hotel is said to belong

17:10

to a 10-year-old boy. His family was staying at the

17:12

hotel in room 310 in 1936 and the boy drowned

17:14

in the pool. Some people

17:17

see him sitting in the corner of a hallway

17:20

shivering inside a towel. He then

17:22

disappears leaving only a wet spot. Sometimes

17:25

he is walking and leaves behind only

17:27

wet footprints. One person

17:29

who saw the boy's ghost ask the front desk

17:31

about the child thinking he might be lost and

17:34

this person was told that there were no children staying in

17:36

the hotel at the time. The

17:38

boy is occasionally seen in room 310 as

17:41

well which overlooks the pool. People

17:43

like to call him Waterboy and

17:45

there is a creepy portrait of

17:47

him in the lobby. Henry O'Callister

17:50

was a silver prospector who came

17:52

to Aspen in 1889. He

17:54

found what he was looking for when he discovered a 1,500

17:56

pound silver nugget. I

18:01

wouldn't call it a nugget. A little big. Feeling

18:05

as though he were a rich man, he checked into

18:07

the Hotel Jerome. While he was staying

18:09

at the hotel, he met Clarissa Wellington of Boston

18:11

and fell in love with her. Clarissa's

18:14

father didn't think much of old Henry, and he

18:16

sent his daughter back to Boston. Henry

18:18

was brokenhearted, and he squandered the fortune he

18:20

had made, doing broke. He

18:23

seems to have returned to the Hotel Jerome and is

18:25

seen and heard walking the halls at night. He

18:28

sobs and wails. I think with all

18:30

that money he could have gone back to Boston and chased her down. Unless she

18:32

wasn't in love with him. Right. The

18:35

third floor seems to be the most active, and hotel

18:37

staff do not like to work on the third floor

18:40

for that reason. A long-dead chambermaid

18:42

seems to be doing some of the housekeeping for

18:44

the staff, so that's kind of nice. Kate

18:46

Kerrigan joined the Jerome staff in 1892 when she was

18:48

only 16. She

18:51

was a beauty, and many of the male guests took a

18:53

liking to her. This made the

18:55

other chambermaids jealous, and they would tease her.

18:58

One evening the teasing went too far when

19:00

another maid told Kate that her beloved Kitty

19:02

had fallen into a frozen pond. Kate

19:05

rushed out to save it, and she fell through the ice. She

19:08

caught pneumonia and died a week later. Kate

19:10

apparently is still tending to her duties, and

19:12

modern day housekeepers will find beds already turned

19:14

down for the evening when they go to do that job.

19:17

Another maid claimed to smell a certain perfume in

19:20

empty rooms, and that she found beds made

19:22

when she entered rooms to clean. Now

19:24

of course, that could just be the guests being nice

19:26

about remaking their bed, although I don't know many people

19:28

who would do that since you know they have to

19:30

strip them. True. Chris around

19:32

the world commented on TripAdvisor about her stay

19:35

at the hotel Jerome, and linked back to

19:37

an article on her blog. Here is her

19:39

account. I walked quickly through

19:41

the building trying not to catch a reflection in the

19:43

mirrors. Turns out I should have been

19:45

more worried about the room. When I

19:48

entered, my friend Catherine, who had skipped most of

19:50

the ghost tour, had some questions for me. So

19:52

Chris had gone on a ghost tour before this,

19:54

so she was already creeped out, and she'd heard

19:56

the stories about hotel Jerome. Why did

19:58

you put the heat back on? When

20:00

I came back into the room, it was on and I know

20:02

I turned it off before I left. I

20:05

didn't touch the heat, I told her. Hmm,

20:07

that's weird, she answered. We had

20:09

both been in the room during turn-down service and specifically

20:11

told the maid not to touch the heat. But

20:14

that wasn't the end of the weirdness. And

20:16

why did you leave the left sink full of

20:18

water? Did you wash your face before you left,

20:21

Catherine asked? Because it was filled with soapy

20:23

water when I came in. Let the

20:25

record show that I had not used that sink

20:27

all day. We examined the

20:29

soaps and the dish. They were unused. We

20:32

looked at each other in horror, then Catherine dove into

20:34

my bed with a shriek. Creepy,

20:36

she shouted. Oh my God, I

20:38

am not going out in that hallway by myself again, I

20:40

told her. Eventually we did fall asleep

20:43

in our own beds, but we kept the TV

20:45

on all night as well as a light on

20:47

in the bathroom. Who could

20:49

blame them? What I want

20:51

to know is where the soapy water came from if whatever the

20:53

spirit didn't use the soap in the rooms. Right.

20:56

Nothing was negative going on in

20:58

that room unless you're in preference of

21:00

cold room error. I know. It's

21:03

just kind of funny what will creep people out

21:05

because and I would be like, oh, this is

21:07

cool because I love having the heat on. I

21:09

know you do. But I also would be like,

21:11

oh, there's something in our room? Cool. Let's

21:13

get out some equipment or something. Typical

21:16

complaints by guests and staff include cold

21:18

spots, sinks filling up on their own

21:21

and televisions turning themselves on and off.

21:24

Are some of the previous guests still here at

21:26

the hotel in spirit? Is

21:28

the hotel Jerome haunted? That

21:31

is for you to decide. Well,
