Concise, well-researched, professional presentation!
This is a wonderful podcast. The host has the erudition of a seasoned academic, but serves the content in a very entertaining fashion. Clearly the work of a true professional. I'll certainly keep following this podcast!
Mark has crafted something special here with this exceptional show! Insightful episodes laden with engaging and well researched content, delivered with flair, while remaining tight and concise. Thoroughly delving into the history of North America (an underserved space when it comes to history podcasts), covering a wide and fascinating range of topics, people and events!
Easy to listen to and provides a broad, concise summary of the title subject. The host talks about how he doesn't like how contemporary historians negatively depict the actions of European explorers. These sentiments often undermine the topic being discussed as he often waters down or omits the purposeful cruelty of explorers in the West Indies and Mesoamerica. He also undermines his own attempt to teach unbiased history by highlighting comments by listeners who view the acts of figures like Christopher Columbus with rose-colored glasses while glossing over listeners who are critical of him. Another interesting observation about this podcast (that I enjoy despite my criticism) is that it serves as a reminder that history is told through the eyes of the victors and dominant group. Most of the content focuses on exploration from a European perspective and is sympathetic to European goals such as spreading Christianity and obtaining wealth and prestige through conquest. This may not be entirely the host's fault since most of the events of that time were recorded by explorers instead of the natives. It's just an interesting observation. The host does make a valiant effort to include native perspectives, however.
