buy the book. Hey,
2:13
Kristen. Yeah, Jelenta. What's the biggest friendship
2:15
issue you've been dealing with lately? Oh,
2:17
Jelenta, you know, my friends are all
2:19
gone. Yeah. Well, not all of them,
2:21
but a lot of them have left
2:23
for greener pastures, you know, remote work.
2:26
You don't have to live here in
2:28
New York City anymore where it's super
2:30
expensive. You can go somewhere where it's
2:32
less expensive and still keep your job.
2:34
So that's what a lot of the
2:36
people I love have done. Yeah, that
2:38
is so rough. Like long distance can
2:41
really hinder a friendship. There are no
2:43
last-minute plans, no bumping into each other
2:45
at the supermarket or the park. Yeah,
2:47
I can't see those friends every day, every
2:50
week. In some cases, I can't even see
2:52
them every month. It's
2:54
tough. Yeah. And on the flip side,
2:56
there are all the people who relocate.
2:58
They often have issues with loneliness and
3:00
making friends. That includes some of my
3:02
friends who have actually left. Oh,
3:05
that's so true. We hear a lot about
3:07
this from our listeners on our Facebook page
3:09
and in emails. We always
3:11
get the question, how do
3:13
I make friends after moving
3:15
someplace new? Well, fortunately, listeners,
3:17
Jelenta, it's not a question
3:20
we have to navigate all on our
3:22
own. There are people who've spent their
3:24
careers asking the same question, and
3:26
we're going to get pointers from one of
3:29
those people today. Well, let's do it because
3:31
I'm Jelenta Greenberg. And I'm Kristen Meinzer. And
3:33
this is How to Be Fine with Friends.
3:48
On each episode of How to Be
3:50
Fine with Friends, we dive into a
3:52
different aspect of friendship or loneliness. In
3:55
some episodes, we'll talk with an expert and
3:57
learn about how a specific issue like geography,
8:00
do we have? How many followers? How many likes
8:02
do we get? And we
8:04
don't focus enough on quality. What
8:06
are those relationships bringing to our
8:08
lives? And what are we bringing
8:10
to those relationships? And is it
8:12
a two-way street? Or is it
8:14
just this passive interaction
8:16
where we're scrolling and
8:18
liking each other's content but not
8:21
really having that meaningful relationship? Now,
8:24
speaking of meaningful relationships, does
8:26
a city, a suburb, a
8:28
rural area, which of
8:30
those is most conducive to having those kinds
8:32
of relationships? Is there a difference between them?
8:35
Does it really have to do with the individual or
8:37
does it have to do with those geographic areas? My
8:40
research tries to dig into this
8:42
and understand differences in social well-being
8:44
by rural and urban
8:46
locations and suburban too. There's obviously
8:48
a gradient and there's a lot
8:50
of variation across types of contexts.
8:52
Historically, rural residents have had bigger
8:54
families and larger social networks and
8:57
they've said that they've reported over
8:59
and over again in research that
9:01
they have stronger social cohesion. That
9:03
means they're more likely to know
9:05
their neighbors, the other people who
9:07
live in their community, they're more
9:09
likely to trust them, to rely
9:11
on them. That
9:13
difference between rural social cohesion and
9:15
urban has started to dissipate somewhat
9:18
though, as we've seen in the
9:20
demographics of rural places change. A
9:22
lot of people have migrated out
9:24
of rural areas and we have
9:26
a lot of new people coming
9:28
into rural areas who might not
9:30
have those strong family connections or
9:32
those strong generational ties
9:34
to the community. I think
9:37
more than just saying rural
9:39
and urban and suburban are different in
9:41
their social context has a lot to
9:43
do with the person, with the access
9:45
to resources that they have, and with
9:47
the individual community. There are some communities
9:50
that have great social infrastructure, those are
9:52
the places that we gather, that's the
9:54
resources that make it possible to have
9:57
meaningful social engagement with each other in
9:59
public spaces. Look,
12:47
