Episode 09 - How To: Help Change Lives

James is the founding Chief Executive of New Start Highland (https://newstarthighland.org/), which he set up in 2000. He is recognised as one of Scotland’s leading social entrepreneurs and holds an OBE for his contribution to the community and the economy. James launched New Start Highland to create opportunities for people to realise their potential. He started with one employee and has since grown an organisation with a 70-strong workforce and a substantial turnover. New Start Highland is a dynamic charity and social enterprise based in the Scottish Highlands. The organisation offers a diverse range of services to individuals and families experiencing vulnerability issues which include poverty, crisis situations, social isolation and loneliness. In this episode, John and James explore how to channel your energy into doing good for others, how to become aware of your own mental behaviours, and why finding a 'soul friend' is key to personal and professional growth.

Hi, I’m John, and we have something in common: a mind…

Six years ago I unexpectedly hit a major mental brick wall. I had no idea what it was or how to deal with it. Ever since I’ve been on a journey to learn all about the mind and how to manage it.

Through therapy, talking circles, deep (deep) conversation, mindfulness meditation, spirituality, personal research and much more besides, I’m fascinated with how people maintain their mental wellbeing.

Join me as I explore what it is we can do in the minutes, hours, days, months and years that make up our extraordinary lives to stay motivated, engaged and at peace with the world we live in.

John is a father, husband, co-founder of the mental wellbeing collective The Men Who:, ambassador for the Joshua Nolan Foundation and constant source of curiosity.
