This week Isabel and Elizabeth continue our conversation with Blu Buchanan, Sociology PhD Candidate and Co-Founder of Students and Workers Ending Racial Violence (SWERV). We chat about what happens when police departments employ underrepresented groups, and whether that's a viable solution to police violence and misconduct - both inside and outside of the department. We talk about the militarization of police culture, its affect on police families, and how it creates a boys club that shapes not only who enters the force, but how a department reacts to misconduct by one of its own. We discuss the elevation of police to heroes by default, and which careers are more dangerous than being a police officer. Finally, we chat about Sacramento PD's recent cases of officer involved shootings, what, if any consequences officers have faced, and what BLM Sacramento is fighting against in their work for racial justice.Stay tuned for part three of our conversation with Blu!Have any comments, questions, or ideas for future shows?
