Welcome to Enjoying Everyday
0:03
Life with New York Times bestselling author
0:05
Joyce Meyer. On today's program,
0:07
Joyce will be teaching from her series, Calm
0:09
Down and Cheer Up. The Bible
0:12
is full of scripture describing God's love
0:14
for each one of us, and it tells us how
0:17
through salvation in Christ, we can
0:19
know true joy. But keeping our
0:21
joy isn't always easy when the difficulties
0:24
of life creep in. So how do
0:26
we remain calm and cheerful when circumstances
0:28
are worrisome? Today,
0:30
Joyce shows us practical ways we can
0:32
calm down and choose God's joy in
0:35
every situation. Let's discover
0:37
how His peace and joy can transform
0:39
our lives. Now here's Joyce
0:42
with today's teaching.
0:43
And you can have emotions
0:45
that are overly excited,
0:47
or emotions
0:49
that are extremely depressed,
0:52
and either one can get us in trouble.
0:54
You say, well, Joyce, why would being really
0:57
excited get me in trouble? Because
1:00
sometimes when you're really excited, you do
1:02
things that you wouldn't ordinarily
1:05
do, or you do things that you regret later. And
1:07
I'll give you an example from my own life. You
1:10
know, women generally like to shop, and this
1:12
is something that happened many years ago. But
1:15
I had a little money saved. It wasn't a
1:17
tremendous amount, but I
1:20
had a little money saved. Let's say it
1:22
was $200. I don't remember exactly,
1:24
but it wasn't a lot. And
1:28
I had been wanting a new watch, but I like
1:31
things that sparkle and shine. And
1:33
I don't even wear a watch now, but back
1:36
then we didn't have all the cell phones that told us what
1:38
time it was all the time. So I wanted a new
1:41
watch, but I wanted something that would be really
1:44
pretty. So we were at the mall
1:46
and went in this jewelry store.
1:48
And sure enough, they had a beautiful
1:50
watch that had a lot of rhinestones on it. And
1:54
the salesman told me it was on sale,
1:56
but I had to get it today if I wanted
1:58
to get the sale price. So
2:00
you know that pressure of
2:02
get it now, get it now, get it now or lose the opportunity,
2:06
is part of the enemy's tactics to
2:08
get us to take action without
2:10
really thinking about
2:12
what we're doing. But
2:14
I'd been learning some things by then, like
2:17
I'm teaching you today about the importance of weighting
2:20
because it was going to take almost all
2:22
the money that I had saved. Then
2:25
the salesman pressure me even a little bit further and
2:27
said, if
2:29
you'll take it today, I'll give you an extra 10 percent
2:32
off. Oh my, my emotions
2:34
are just up here. I don't
2:36
know if you've noticed or not, but anytime
2:38
you look at a piece of jewelry in the jewelry
2:40
case in the store, it always
2:43
looks better than it does when you take it home. I
2:46
finally realized what it is, it's the
2:48
lighting that they have on it at the time.
2:51
Before you buy anything like that, take it out
2:53
of the case and look
2:55
at it in regular lighting so you can see
2:57
what it's going to look like. But anyway, I'm
3:00
learning some things by now, so I decided that I
3:02
would take a little walk. Think
3:04
about it a little bit. So I'm
3:06
walking up and down the mall
3:09
and lo and behold, I saw a
3:11
suit in a window that
3:13
I really liked. I
3:15
mean, it was little at the waist and then it
3:18
flared out and it just was really
3:20
pretty. So I decided to try it
3:21
on, that was a mistake. I
3:24
tried it on and it looked so
3:26
good on me and Dave just
3:29
loved it. He said, you should get that. Well,
3:31
that also was going to take all my money. So
3:33
now I had a real problem. I couldn't get
3:35
the watch and the suit and I had to
3:37
decide which one I wanted. So
3:40
once again, I said, I'm going to take a walk and think about
3:42
this and I'll come back if I want
3:44
it. So I took another
3:46
walk for a little while and
3:49
I know you're anxious to see which one I bought.
3:52
Well, you know what ended up happening? I
3:54
thought more than I want the watch
3:58
or the suit, I don't want to be born. because
4:01
I liked heaven a little bit of cash. So if I wanted to
4:03
take somebody to lunch, I could. Or if I wanted
4:06
to buy somebody a little present,
4:08
I could. And so
4:11
I decided I'm not gonna get either one.
4:13
Well, you know what? In due time, God provided
4:16
both. Dave actually ended up buying me the suit a
4:18
little bit later. And I don't remember how
4:21
I got a watch that I liked, but I eventually did.
4:25
God gave me both of them because
4:27
I waited and didn't act emotionally.
4:30
Give God an opportunity to
4:32
lead you. Take a little bit of time
4:34
to wait. In
4:37
Exodus 14, nine through 15, the Bible says,
4:41
the Egyptians, all pharaohs, horses and
4:43
chariots, horsemen and troops, pursued the Israelites and
4:47
overtook them as they encamped by the sea. Now,
4:51
you know, the Israelites had
4:53
been begging God for a long time to get them out of Egypt.
4:58
And they were not getting out of Egypt where
5:00
they were slaves. And so eventually God
5:02
raised up Moses to lead them out. But
5:07
the very first thing that happens when they are
5:09
let out is they find themselves in a very difficult
5:11
spot.
5:13
They were trapped
5:16
at the Red Sea and the Egyptian
5:18
army was behind them.
5:21
So they definitely were like between a rock and
5:25
a hard place. And so they had options.
5:27
And so as Pharaoh approached, the Israelites
5:29
looked up and there
5:31
were the Egyptians marching after them and they
5:34
were terrified and they cried out to the Lord.
5:37
They were getting upset. They said
5:40
to Moses, and I love this,
5:42
it's like, when we get upset, we start blaming
5:44
all of our problems on somebody
5:46
else. They said to Moses, was it because there was no graves
5:49
in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What
5:53
have you done by bringing us out of Egypt? You're
5:56
the ones that wanted to leave. And now all of a sudden,
5:58
everything is Moses. his fault.
6:01
Didn't we say to you in Egypt, leave us alone?
6:04
Let us serve the Egyptians?
6:07
It would have been better for us to serve the
6:09
Egyptians than to die here in
6:11
the desert.
6:12
And if they did ever say that to Moses, they
6:15
certainly got over it because they definitely
6:17
wanted to leave by the time they left.
6:20
And Moses answered the people, do
6:22
not be afraid, confirm,
6:25
and I'm going to change that.
6:27
Do not be afraid, calm down.
6:31
Can I say that to you right now? Do not
6:33
be afraid, calm down.
6:37
God loves you.
6:39
He's got a plan for your deliverance.
6:41
He's got a timing for your deliverance. And
6:45
God will take care of you if
6:48
you trust him to do it. If
6:50
he shows you something to do, then by all means
6:52
do it. But don't just
6:54
start doing a bunch of things and saying
6:56
a bunch of things
6:58
just out of a position of being
7:01
upset.
7:04
Don't be afraid, stand
7:06
firm or calm down, and you will see
7:09
the deliverance the Lord will bring for you today.
7:12
The Egyptians you see today, you will never
7:15
see again. The Lord
7:17
will fight for you and you need
7:19
only to be still. Wow.
7:23
Wouldn't it be wonderful if you turned your TV
7:25
on today just to hear
7:27
me say, calm down,
7:31
wait, and be still and
7:33
let God bring your deliverance.
7:36
I know in my heart that there are thousands
7:39
of you watching. You need that word
7:41
for today. Calm
7:44
down, be still, wait
7:47
on God, and he will
7:49
bring your deliverance in the right way at
7:52
the right time. The Lord
7:54
will fight for you and all you need to do is
7:56
be still. Then the
7:59
Lord said to Moses, Why are you crying out to
8:01
me? Tell the Israelites
8:04
to move on.
8:05
See, a lot of times when we have problems,
8:07
we get so afraid
8:09
that we're just frozen
8:11
in fear and we just don't do anything. And
8:15
I wanna encourage you, no matter how
8:17
big of a problem you have right now, if
8:20
you wanna do something, keep doing
8:22
what you know is right. Keep
8:25
studying the word. Keep
8:27
helping other people. Keep
8:30
going to church. Keep your commitments.
8:33
Don't just get depressed and full of self-pity
8:36
and sit somewhere and think about your problem
8:38
and think about it and think about it and think about it and think
8:40
about it and then get on the phone and talk about it and talk
8:42
about it and talking about it. You know, when you have
8:44
a problem, the more you think about it and talk about,
8:47
the more upset you get.
8:50
Almost anybody can get themselves upset
8:53
if they just sit around and think about their
8:55
problems. When we're upset,
8:57
we say wrong things. We
9:00
do wrong things. Let's
9:02
just say that moving and acting emotionally
9:05
never capitalize
9:07
all the letters and never solves
9:10
our problem. Well,
9:12
what does it mean to wait on God? It's
9:15
quite an eye-opener for me when I actually
9:17
dug a little bit deeper and studied this. To
9:20
wait on God doesn't
9:22
mean to just sit around and do
9:24
absolutely nothing. It means to expect,
9:27
to look for,
9:29
and to long for God's favor,
9:31
his
9:32
answer, and his power. Like
9:37
being hopeful means
9:39
that you are expecting God to show
9:42
up at any moment and
9:44
do the thing in your life that needs to
9:46
be done. Waiting on God is not
9:48
passive. It may be passive
9:51
as far as like taking physical action,
9:54
but spiritually, you're very
9:56
active and you're trusting God and
9:58
you're saying, I know you're gonna take it. take care of me, I
10:01
know you're going to do what's right. I
10:03
believe you're going to show up any moment and make
10:05
this situation right. It's
10:07
spiritual activity rather than fleshly
10:11
activity. Psalm 25, four
10:13
says, show me your ways, Lord, teach me
10:16
your paths. In other words,
10:18
ask for guidance. James 4,
10:21
two says you have not because you ask not. If
10:23
you have a problem right now and you don't know what to
10:25
do, instead of just saying, oh God,
10:27
I don't know what to do, ask
10:29
Him to show you what to
10:31
do.
10:33
Proverbs 3, five,
10:34
six and seven say, lean not
10:36
to your own understanding. Trust
10:39
in Lord with all your heart and mind and
10:41
lean not to your own understanding. In
10:44
all your ways acknowledge Him and He will
10:46
direct your path.
10:48
God will show you what to do if
10:50
you ask Him and you wait on Him. God's
10:53
help comes, and I love this statement, God's
10:57
help comes in proportion to our waiting
11:00
and hoping in Him.
11:03
Psalm 33, 20 says, our inner selves
11:05
wait earnestly for the Lord.
11:07
He is our help and our shield. For
11:10
in Him do our hearts rejoice because
11:13
we have trusted, relied on
11:15
and we're confident in His holy
11:17
name. Psalm 37, 34 says,
11:20
wait for and expect
11:22
the Lord and keep and heed
11:25
His ways. While you're waiting on
11:27
God, be obedient to whatever the
11:29
Word tells you to do. And
11:33
He will exalt you to inherit the
11:35
land. God
11:37
led the Israelites all the way through
11:39
the wilderness and into
11:41
the promised land, but
11:43
to be honest, took
11:46
them a lot longer than it should have because
11:49
they kept grumbling
11:51
and complaining and murmuring while they were
11:53
out there. But many delays
11:56
are divine delays.
11:58
They weren't ready really to go into the...
11:59
to the promised land yet. And maybe some of
12:02
you, I know this was the case with me, maybe
12:04
some of you are asking God for something, but
12:07
it's going to take a little while. He wants to give it to
12:09
you, it's in his plan, but he
12:12
has something prepared for you, but
12:14
now he has to prepare you for it. Sometimes
12:18
we're not spiritually mature enough to
12:20
handle the things that God wants
12:22
to give us. Psalm 20,
12:25
I mean, Isaiah 26, three says, you will
12:27
guard him and keep him in perfect and
12:29
constant peace, whose mind is stayed
12:33
on you. Keep your mind off
12:35
your problems. One morning I was starting
12:38
to have my time with God and
12:41
I was thinking about all my problems, thinking about my
12:43
problems, thinking about my problems, and the Lord
12:45
spoke to me and said, are
12:47
you going to fellowship with your problems or
12:50
are you going to fellowship with me?
12:52
Don't make the mistake that I was making, spend
12:54
your time with God and it will
12:56
strengthen you and enable
12:58
you to hear from God. Thank
