Steve Webb: We will have run the race well. Second Chronicles chapter one. Solomon Son of David
0:59
strengthened his hold on his kingdom, the Lord his God was
1:02
with him and highly exalted Him. Then Solomon spoke to all Israel
1:07
to the commanders of 1000s, and of hundreds to the judges, into
1:11
every leader in all Israel, the heads of the families, Solomon
1:15
and the whole assembly with him went to the high place that was
1:19
in Debian because God's tent of meeting which the Lord servant
1:22
Moses had made in the wilderness was there. Now David had brought
1:27
the ark of God from key Earth grm, to the place he had set up
1:31
for it, because he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem, but he
1:34
put the bronze altar which Bezaleel son of Uriah son of her
1:38
had made in front of the Lord's tabernacle, Solomon in the
1:41
assembly inquired of him there. Solomon offered sacrifices there
1:45
in the Lord's presence on the bronze altar. At the Tent of
1:49
Meeting, he offered 1000 burnt offerings on it. That night God
1:53
appeared to Solomon had said to him, ask, What should I give
1:57
you? And Solomon said to God, you have shown great and
2:01
faithful loved my father, David, and you have made me king in his
2:05
place. Lord God, let your promise to my father now come
2:09
true, for you have made me King over a people as numerous as the
2:13
dust of the earth. Now grant me wisdom and knowledge so that I
2:17
may lead these people for who can judge this great people of
2:21
yours. God said to Solomon, since this was in your heart,
2:25
and you have not requested riches, wealth, or glory, or for
2:29
the life of those who hate you, and you have not even requested
2:32
long life, but you have requested for yourself wisdom
2:36
and knowledge, that you may judge my people over whom I have
2:39
made you king, wisdom and knowledge are given to you. I
2:43
will also give you riches, wealth and glory, unlike what
2:47
was given to the kings who were before you, or will be given to
2:50
those after you. So Solomon went to Jerusalem from a high place
2:54
that was in Debian, in front of the tent of meeting, and he
2:58
reigned over Israel. Solomon accumulated 1400, chariots and
3:03
12,000 horsemen, which he stationed in the chariot cities,
3:07
and with the king in Jerusalem. The King made silver and gold as
3:11
common in Jerusalem is stones, and he made cedar as abundant as
3:15
Sycamore in the Judea and foothills. Solomon's horses came
3:19
from Egypt in QE, the king's traders would get them from QE
3:23
at the going price. A chariot could be imported from Egypt for
3:27
15 Pounds of silver, and a horse for about four pounds. In the
3:32
same way, they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites,
3:36
and to the kings of Aram through their agents.
3:39
Second Chronicles chapter two. Now Solomon decided to build a
3:44
house for the name of the Lord in a royal palace for himself.
3:48
So Solomon assigned 70,000 men to carry loads and 80,000 men to
3:53
quarry stone in the mountains and 3600 to supervise them. Then
3:58
Solomon sent word to hear him the king of Tyre saying, as you
4:01
dealt with David, my father, and sent him cedars, to build him a
4:05
house to dwell in, so do for me, Behold, I am about to build a
4:09
house for the name of the Lord my God, dedicating it to him, to
4:13
burn fragrant incense before Him and to set out the Showbread
4:17
continually, and to offer burnt offerings morning and evening on
4:20
Sabbath, and on new moons, and on the appointed feasts of the
4:24
Lord our God, this being required forever in Israel. The
4:28
house which I'm about to build will be great for greater desire
4:32
God than all the gods, but who was able to build a house for
4:35
him for the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain
4:38
him. So who am I that I should build a house for him, except to
4:43
burn incense before him? Now send me a skilled man to work in
4:47
gold, silver, brass and iron, and in purple, crimson and
4:51
violet fabrics, and who knows how to make engravings to work
4:55
with a skilled men whom I have in Judah and Jerusalem, whom
4:58
David my father provide it send me also cedar, Cypress and algum
5:03
timber from Lebanon for I know that your servants know how to
5:06
cut timber of Lebanon. And indeed my servants will work
5:10
with your servants to prepare timber in abundance for me for
5:13
the house which I am about to build will be great and
5:16
wonderful. Now behold, I will give to your servants the
5:19
woodsmen who cut the timber 20,000 cores of crushed wheat
5:23
and 20,000 cores of barley, and 20,000 baths of wine, and 20,000
5:29
baths of oil. Then here I am king of Tyre answered in a
5:32
letter sent to Solomon, because the Lord loves his people he has
5:36
made you king over them. Then here I am, continued, bless it
5:40
be the Lord the God of Israel, who has made heaven and earth
5:44
who has given King David A wise son, endowed with discretion and
5:48
understanding who will build a house for the Lord and a royal
5:51
palace for himself. Now I am sending you I'm a by a skilled
5:55
man endowed with understanding the son of a Dan ICT woman and
5:59
aterian father, who knows how to work in gold, silver, bronze,
6:03
iron, stone and wood, and in purple, Violet, linen and
6:08
crimson fabrics, and who knows how to make all kinds of
6:11
engravings and to execute any design which may be assigned to
6:14
him to work with your skilled men, and with those of my Lord
6:18
David your father. Now then let my Lord send to His servants
6:22
wheat and barley oil and wine of which he has spoken. We will cut
6:26
whatever timber you need from Lebanon and bring it to you on
6:29
rafts by sea to Joppa so that you may carry it up to
6:32
Jerusalem. Solomon numbered all the aliens who were in the land
6:36
of Israel following the census which his father David had taken
6:39
in 153,600 were found, he appointed 70,000 of them to
6:45
carry loads and 80,000 to quarry stones in the mountains and 3600
6:50
supervisors to make the people work.
6:53
Second Chronicles chapter three. Then Solomon began to build the
6:58
house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord
7:01
had appeared to his father David, at the place that David
7:04
had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan, the Jebusite he
7:08
began to build on the second day in the second month of the
7:10
fourth year of his reign. Now these are the foundations which
7:14
Solomon laid for building the house of God. The length in
7:18
cubits according to the old standard was 60 cubits and the
7:22
width 20 cubits. The porch which was in front of the house was as
7:26
long as the width of the house 20 cubits and the height 120.
7:32
And inside he overlaid it with pure gold. He overlaid the main
7:36
room with cypress wood and overlaid it with fine gold, and
7:39
ornamented it with palm trees and chains. Further, he adorned
7:44
the house with precious stones, and the gold was gold from our
7:48
van. He also overlaid the house with gold, the beams the
7:52
thresholds and its walls and its doors, and he carved cherub him
7:56
on the walls. Now he made the room of the Holy of Holies. Its
8:01
length across the width of the house was 20 cubits, and its
8:04
width was 20 cubits, and he overlaid it with fine gold
8:08
amounting to 600 talents. The weight of the nails was 50
8:12
shekels of gold. He also overlaid the upper rooms with
8:15
gold. Then he made two sculpture cherub him in the room of the
8:19
Holy of Holies and overlaid them with gold. The wingspan of the
8:23
cherub him was 20 cubits, the wing of one of five cubits
8:27
touched the wall of the house, and its other wing of five
8:31
cubits touched the wing of the other cherub, the wing of the
8:34
other cherub of five cubits touched the wall of the house.
8:38
And its other wing of five cubits was attached to the wing
8:41
of the first cherub. The wings of these cherub him extended 20
8:45
cubits and they stood on their feet facing the main room. He
8:49
made the veil of violet, purple, crimson and find linen and he
8:53
worked cheering him on it. He also made two pillars for the
8:57
front of the house 35 cubits high, and the Capitol and the
9:01
top of each was five cubits. He made chains in the inner
9:05
sanctuary and placed them on the tops of the pillars, and he made
9:09
100 pomegranates and placed them on the chains. he erected the
9:13
pillars in the front of the temple, one on the right and the
9:15
other on the left, and named the one on the right Jaken and the
9:19
one on the left Boaz. Second Chronicles chapter four. Solomon also made a bronze altar
9:26
30 feet long, 30 feet wide and 15 feet high. Then he cast a
9:31
great round basin 15 feet across from rim to rim, called the sea.
9:37
It was seven and a half feet deep and about 45 feet in
9:40
circumference. It was encircled just below its rim by two rows
9:44
of figures that resembled oxen. There were about six oxen per
9:48
foot all the way around, and they were cast as part of the
9:51
basin. The sea was placed on a base of 12 bronze oxen all
9:56
facing outward, three faced North three faced East West,
10:00
three faced south and three faced East and the sea rested on
10:05
them. The walls of the sea were about three inches thick and its
10:09
rim flared out like a cup and resembled a Water Lily Blossom,
10:13
it could hold about 16,500 gallons of water. He also made
10:18
10 smaller basins for washing the utensils for the burnt
10:21
offerings. He said five on the south side and five on the
10:25
north, but the priests washed themselves in the sea. He then
10:29
cast 10 Gold lampstands according to the specifications
10:33
that had been given, and he put them in the temple, five
10:36
replaced against the south wall and five replaced against the
10:39
north wall. He also built 10 tables and placed them in the
10:43
temple five along the south wall and five along the north wall.
10:46
Then he molded 100 Gold basins. He then built a courtyard for
10:51
the priests and also a large outer courtyard. He made doors
10:56
for the courtyard entrances and overlaid them with bronze. The
10:59
great bronze basin called the sea was placed near the
11:02
southeast corner of the temple Hyrum a by also made the
11:06
necessary washbasins shovels and bowls. So at last Hyrum a by
11:12
completed everything King Solomon had assigned him to make
11:15
for the temple of God, the two pillars, the two bowl shaped
11:19
capitals on top of the pillars, the two networks of interwoven
11:22
chains that decorated the capitals, the 400 pomegranates
11:26
that hung from the chains on the capitals to rows of pomegranates
11:30
for each of the chain networks that decorated the capitals on
11:33
top of the pillars, the water carts holding the basins, the
11:37
sea and the 12 oxen under it, the ash buckets, the shovels,
11:41
the meat hooks, and all the related articles. Your ma buy
11:45
made all these things of burnished bronze for the temple
11:48
of the Lord, just as King Solomon had directed. The king
11:52
had them cast in clay molds in the Jordan valley between
11:55
Succoth and xiaofan. Solomon used such great quantities of
11:59
bronze that its weight could not be determined. Solomon also made
12:03
all the furnishings for the temple of God, the gold altar,
12:06
the tables for the bread of the presence, the lampstands and
12:10
their lamps of solid gold to burn in front of the Most Holy
12:13
Place as prescribed. The flower decorations lamps and tongs all
12:18
of the purest gold, the lamps, sniffers, bowls, ladles and
12:22
incense burners, all of solid gold, the doors for the
12:26
entrances to the most holy place, and the main room of the
12:29
temple overlaid with gold
12:31
Second Chronicles chapter five. So Solomon finished all his work
12:36
on the temple of the Lord. Then he brought all the gifts his
12:39
father David had dedicated the silver the gold in the various
12:43
articles, and he stored them in the treasuries of the temple of
12:46
God. Solomon then summoned to Jerusalem, the elders of Israel
12:51
and all the heads of tribes, the leaders of the ancestral
12:54
families of Israel, they were to bring the ark of the Lord's
12:57
covenant to the temple from its location in the city of David
13:01
also known as Zion. So all the men of Israel assembled before
13:05
the king at the annual festival of shelters, which is held in
13:08
early autumn, when all the elders of Israel arrived, the
13:12
Levites picked up the ark, the priests and Levites brought up
13:15
the Ark along with a special tent at all the sacred items
13:19
that had been in it. There before the ark, King Solomon and
13:22
the entire community of Israel sacrificed so many sheep, goats
13:27
and cattle that no one could keep count. Then the priests
13:30
carried the Ark of the Lord's covenant into the inner
13:33
sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place and placed it
13:36
beneath the wings of the chairman. The chair have them
13:39
spread their wings over the ark, forming a canopy over the Ark
13:42
and its carrying poles. These poles were so long that their
13:46
ends could be seen from the holy place which is in front of the
13:49
most holy place, but not from the outside. They are still
13:53
there to this day. Nothing was in the ark except the two stone
13:57
tablets that Moses had placed in it at Mount Sinai, where the
14:01
Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel when they left
14:03
Egypt. Then the priests left the holy place. All the priests who
14:08
were present had purified themselves, whether or not they
14:11
were on duty that day, and the Levites who are musicians asef
14:15
HeMan. Jude, youth in and all their sons and brothers were
14:18
dressed in fine linen robes and stood at the east side of the
14:22
altar, playing cymbals liars and harps. They were joined by 120
14:27
priests who were playing trumpets, the trumpeters and
14:30
singers performed together in unison to praise and give thanks
14:34
to the Lord, accompanied by trumpets, symbols and other
14:37
instruments. They raised their voices and praised the Lord with
14:40
these words. He is good, his faithful love endures forever.
14:45
At that moment, a thick cloud filled the temple of the Lord.
14:49
The priests could not continue their service because of the
14:52
cloud, for the glorious presence of the Lord filled the temple of
14:56
God. Well, Solomon has now begun his reign as king, it seems that his
15:02
first order of business was to strengthen his hold on the
15:05
kingdom. in First Kings chapter two, we read that shortly before
15:08
his father David died, he gave Solomon instructions on what he
15:12
should do to accomplish this. And it looks like Solomon wasted
15:15
no time. We read in chapter one that God was with him and highly
15:20
exalted Him. God seems to be pleased with how Solomon began
15:23
his reign, Solomon brought all of Israel together to make a
15:26
very special sacrifice of 1000 bird offerings to God. And this
15:31
seems to have been to show that he would seek God as a leader of
15:34
the nation. That's a good thing, right? Well, that night, God
15:37
came to Solomon in a dream. And he said, ask, What shall I give
15:41
you? Of course, the implication is that he would have given
15:44
Solomon anything that he asked for right? Can you imagine
15:48
anything? Wow. Wouldn't it be great if God made that kind of
15:51
offer to you? What would you ask for? But wait, he has made that
15:57
offer? Don't believe me? Well, how about Matthew seven, seven,
16:01
Ask and it will be given to you seek and you will find, knock
16:05
and it will be open to you. And John 15 Seven, If you abide in
16:09
Me and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire,
16:14
and it shall be done for you. First, John 514. Now this is the
16:19
confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything,
16:22
according to His will, He hears us. Beloved, these promises
16:27
apply to every believer. The question is, have we availed
16:30
ourselves of them? We all know what Solomon's request was, he
16:35
asked for wisdom and knowledge to lead Israel. Take note that
16:39
he asked for both wisdom and knowledge. Knowledge without
16:43
wisdom can be a very dangerous thing. For instance, it's one
16:46
thing to know how to use a gun. But if I don't have the wisdom
16:49
to know when to use it, that could be bad news. And after his
16:54
request, God said, since this was in your heart, and you have
16:57
not requested riches, wealth, or glory, or for the life of those
17:02
who hate you, and you have not even requested long life, but
17:05
you've requested for yourself, wisdom and knowledge that you
17:08
may judge my people over whom I've made you, King, wisdom and
17:12
knowledge are given you. I will also give you riches, wealth and
17:16
glory, unlike what was given to the kings who were before you,
17:19
or will be given to those after you. So Solomon made a good
17:24
request, don't you agree? But did he make the best request?
17:28
Let's think about this. Did he ask for a deep and abiding love
17:33
for God and the desire to follow Him and lead the people in how
17:36
to be devoted to God as his father had? Wouldn't this have
17:40
been even better? Surely, as we've seen, David was a flawed
17:43
man. But his love of God never waned. David ended his life
17:48
still in love with God. As we shall see, this was not how
17:53
Solomon ended his days. Solomon is thought to have been between
17:57
20 and 25 years old when he took the throne. Tell me what
18:01
generally happens to young people when they attain great
18:04
wealth? Quite often, it ruins them. Perhaps it would have been
18:08
better if Solomon had asked for a heart devoted to God, maybe
18:11
that would have been the best request. Adam Clark who lived
18:15
from 1762 to 1832, was a Methodist theologian and Bible
18:20
scholar. And he wrote these words about Solomon, instead of
18:24
being the wisest of men, did he not become more brutish than any
18:28
man? Did he not even lose the knowledge of his Creator and
18:32
worship the abominations of the Moabites Zanoni ins and so
18:35
forth? And was not such idolatry a proof of the grossest
18:39
stupidity. How few proofs does his life give that the gracious
18:44
purpose of God was fulfilled in him? He received much, but he
18:49
would have received much more had he been faithful to the
18:53
grace given. No character in the sacred writings disappoints us
18:57
more than the character of Solomon. Yes, God gave Solomon
19:02
great blessings. But as is always the case, Solomon had to
19:06
decide to follow God and make right decisions in his life.
19:10
Tragically, he often chose wrongly, beloved, we may not
19:15
have the greatest riches, the most wisdom or the deepest
19:18
knowledge. But if we asked for and cultivated continual thirst
19:23
to know and love God, when we reached the end of our days, we
19:27
will have run the race. Well. I'd love to hear your thoughts
