Now onto the show. This
0:52
is Rhea. Welcome to Little Stories
0:54
for Tiny People. When I was
0:56
a kid, you could leave my
0:59
house through the back door, tramp
1:01
through the yard, make
1:03
your way past the weeping
1:05
willow tree, scramble
1:07
down a rocky path, and
1:10
find yourself at a creek. If
1:14
you focused solely on the
1:16
little fish darting through the
1:18
water, you could imagine you
1:20
were in the real wilderness,
1:24
especially in the height of summer
1:26
when everything was green and
1:29
the leaves hid the houses
1:31
beyond the trees. Our
1:34
story takes place at
1:36
a point where people and
1:40
wilderness meet in the
1:42
form of a forgotten
1:44
object. Let's hear it.
1:46
It's called Another Treasure
1:49
in the Forest. Take it
1:51
away Elise. Remember, there are no
1:53
pictures. You're going to have to
1:55
imagine them in your mind. You
1:57
can imagine them however you want.
2:00
Okay, here we go. The
2:07
boys traced through the summer
2:10
forest, their boots kicking up
2:12
dust from the trail that
2:15
wended through overgrown brambles. It
2:17
was late afternoon, and the
2:20
two brothers had been out
2:22
all day exploring. They
2:25
drank most of their water, eaten
2:28
all of their snacks, and
2:30
it seemed, exhausted
2:33
their supply of
2:35
laughter and conversation, too. They
2:40
went along in comfortable
2:42
silence. The
2:45
elder boy, a natural leader,
2:48
stepped and sat on
2:50
a fallen log. Knowing
2:53
his brother would follow, he withdrew
2:56
his compass from his backpack
2:59
and studied it, making
3:01
sure they were on the right trail.
3:05
The younger brother emptied everything
3:07
from his pack, setting
3:09
things on the ground here and
3:11
there, rummaging for a forgotten bit
3:14
of food to tide him over.
3:17
Finding nothing, he collected his
3:20
things and zipped his pack.
3:23
The older boy took a last
3:25
glance at the compass, and
3:28
together they carried on through
3:30
the woods. Neither
3:32
of them noticed the object
3:34
the younger boy had missed,
3:37
the one that had rolled under
3:40
the curve of the log. If
3:42
it had been just a couple hours
3:44
later in the day, he would
3:47
have certainly noticed its absence.
3:51
It's funny how we can overlook things
3:53
when we don't see an immediate use for them.
3:56
On guard, Raccoon called,
3:58
hours later. later, brandishing a
4:01
stick at a snail as it
4:03
inched along a log under the
4:05
light of the moon. Raccoon
4:07
could have eaten the snail, would
4:10
have eaten it just an hour earlier, but
4:12
he had done so
4:14
well at hunting, had in
4:16
fact caught a frog, then a
4:18
toad, then a grub in quick
4:21
succession, that he'd switched to
4:23
playing instead. The
4:25
snail turned towards Raccoon,
4:27
then teni quivering. No
4:30
thank you, the snail said. No
4:33
matter, Raccoon would find someone else
4:35
to play with. He knew
4:38
creatures often crept near the underside of
4:40
logs. He'd caught plenty
4:42
of toads this way, but
4:45
as he ran his paw along the
4:47
curve of the log, he
4:49
hit up against... Not
4:52
someone, but something.
4:57
He knew without even getting a look at
4:59
it, without even holding it,
5:02
that it was not of
5:04
the forest. The forest
5:06
produced a dazzling array
5:08
of things, thorns
5:11
on brambly vines, the
5:14
delicate hairs on a
5:16
caterpillar, lost antlers,
5:20
but it was rare to find an object
5:22
this smooth. Raccoon
5:25
grabbed it up to get a
5:27
better look. With
5:30
the moon's soft light bathing
5:32
the forest, you could see it
5:34
was bright red and made
5:37
of a smooth, shiny material
5:39
that did not come from
5:41
trees. It had
5:43
the shape of a branch, but
5:45
it was all one thickness, and
5:48
he could put his claws nearly all the way
5:50
around it. At one
5:52
end was a different material. Raccoon
5:55
tapped a nail against
5:57
it. Hmm. Vaccoon
6:00
scanned the area around him.
6:02
He felt protective of this mystery
6:05
object, though he wasn't quite
6:07
sure why. It
6:09
was immobile, lifeless in
6:11
his paws. It gave
6:14
nothing away. He
6:16
turned it over in his claws
6:18
and found that there was something
6:20
small and ridged, jutting
6:23
out from it. Vaccoon
6:25
pressed against the ridged area with
6:27
a claw. Nothing happened.
6:31
He tried to nudge it, and
6:33
Raccoon had been completely absorbed
6:36
in his task. Upon
6:38
hearing a growl behind him, he
6:41
whipped around, and at
6:43
the same moment, his claw
6:45
shifted the little ridged section
6:47
on the object, and
6:49
a tremendous beam of light
6:52
came shooting out of it.
6:55
Ha! Raccoon cried, and
6:57
in that moment, in
6:59
the span of perhaps one
7:01
second, several thoughts
7:04
moved through Raccoon's
7:06
brain all at once.
7:09
For one thing, he realized
7:12
the growl had come from
7:14
a bobcat who was now
7:16
squinting in the harsh light. Secondly,
7:20
Raccoon understood that he was
7:22
holding a rather magical instrument.
7:26
He had been right in
7:28
imagining it was special, and
7:30
the third thought that came to
7:32
him was simply,
7:35
I'll never
7:37
get to keep this. Raccoon
7:41
knew precisely what happened to
7:43
things like this, what
7:46
happened to treasures found
7:48
in the forest. He
7:50
was so caught up in this last
7:52
thought of his that he
7:55
barely noticed the bobcat
7:57
who had been undoubtedly planning to
7:59
eat it. him, scramble to
8:01
its feet, and run
8:04
away from Raccoon's magical light
8:06
sword. Yes, magical
8:09
light sword. That's what
8:11
it was. Raccoon decided time
8:14
was short. As soon
8:16
as the committee… Oh, but
8:19
Raccoon didn't want to think about that.
8:21
Not yet. He decided
8:23
to get as much time with
8:25
his new found magical light
8:27
sword as he possibly could. He
8:30
went about having the time
8:32
of his young life. It
8:35
was especially fun to cast
8:37
his beam of light on
8:39
unsuspecting creatures. He'd turn it
8:41
off by shifting the splits on
8:44
the side, scamper about, spy a
8:46
squirrel or something moving in the
8:48
trees, point the thing at the
8:50
creature, then flick it on, adding
8:54
a helpful, unguard,
8:57
with each surprise attack. It
9:00
was funny to see the animal's
9:02
reactions. Raccoon spotted
9:04
an opossum gathering insects
9:06
to eat. When the light
9:08
switched on, the creature leapt a foot in
9:11
the air. A look
9:13
of utter terror on his
9:15
face before running off, shrieking.
9:17
Raccoon had excellent
9:20
night vision. He could
9:22
spot movement in the midnight forest
9:24
many tree lengths away, but he
9:27
still sometimes missed the details
9:29
of things. So when the
9:31
sun came up, after a night
9:33
spent with his treasure, he was
9:36
not surprised to find a detail
9:38
had escaped him. There, on the
9:42
bottom of the object, was
9:44
a square cut into the
9:46
smooth material. Raccoon
9:48
went to the log where he'd
9:50
found his treasure and sat
9:52
down. He laid the
9:54
object in his lap and
9:56
clawed at the square with both paws.
10:00
By now, the sun was up, and
10:02
it was past time he'd usually be in
10:05
bed. His mind was not
10:07
as sharp as it was at midnight, his
10:10
movements less precise. He
10:13
felt sluggish as he struggled with
10:15
the puzzling square. But
10:18
Raccoon had a strange sense
10:20
that this cut-out area
10:22
on his magical lightsword was
10:25
rather important, so he
10:27
kept clawing at it. He'd
10:30
been nowhere until he
10:33
heard a rustling behind him and
10:35
then a voice. What
10:38
do we have here? There
10:44
