Welcome to Marketing School, the only

0:03

podcast that provides daily top level

0:05

marketing tips and strategies from entrepreneurs

0:08

that practice what they preach and live

0:10

what they teach. Let's start leveling

0:12

up your marketing knowledge with your instructors,

0:15

Neil Pazel and Eric Sue.

0:19

All right, guys, before we start, we got a special

0:21

message from our sponsor. If

0:24

you want to rank higher on Google, you got

0:26

to look at your page speed time. The

0:28

faster website loads, the better off you

0:30

are with Google's Core Vital update

0:33

that makes it super super important to optimize

0:35

your site for low time. And

0:37

one easy way to do it is use the host

0:40

that Eric and I use, dream Hosts, So

0:42

just go to dream host or google it,

0:44

find it, check it out, and it's a great way

0:47

to improve your low time. Today

0:50

we are going to talk about seven stupid

0:53

YouTube marketing mistakes that we've made, so for

0:55

context. Right now, Neil's already at a million

0:57

YouTube subscribers. Congratulations, that happened this

0:59

week. Now he's going to get the gold play

1:01

buttony, but he probably doesn't even care. And

1:03

I'm at about sixty three thousand or so,

1:05

so I'm on my way to one hundred thousand. So we're

1:07

gonna talk about seven stupid things that we've done, and

1:10

Neil, you're starting first. Well, first

1:12

off, congratulations are getting close to one hundred

1:15

thousand, and I think you'll get a button. When you get to one hundred

1:17

thousand, you get a silver one, not a gold one.

1:19

But if you get to a million, I think if you get to

1:21

a much bigger number, you get like a diamond one too.

1:24

The way, none of this really matters. But

1:27

congratulations on getting a plaque

1:29

or getting close to one. All right, So that's

1:32

like a participation trophy. But I don't give me that crap.

1:35

Go ahead, Well, even mine's of participation

1:37

trophy, it doesn't really mean much, all right,

1:39

right, go go go all right. So the

1:42

first silly mistake that I made over the years was

1:44

creating really short videos. I thought,

1:46

more short videos, doing them in frequency

1:49

the way I have the time to do it. You do well,

1:51

But YouTube actually dingsy when you start creating

1:53

really short videos because you're not keeping people on

1:55

YouTube long enough. So don't create two

1:58

three minute videos. Try to aim for ten plus videos,

2:01

all right too. Mistake I made so

2:03

for context. A couple of years ago, I

2:06

was mainly just talking about marketing. And my channel

2:08

was on average, I think I'll get like five

2:10

ten k, fifteen K per video,

2:13

and then some would jump up to like a couple hundred thousand,

2:15

which is pretty good, right, And I was growing, and

2:18

then I stopped my frequency of

2:21

posting, and not only that, I started talking about whatever

2:23

I wanted to talk about, right, because I'm like, you know, I

2:25

don't want to just like cater to this algorithm,

2:27

Like you know, I can talk about more stuff. I'm dynamic.

2:30

And while that might be true for every single one of you,

2:32

the problem is you're playing the YouTube algorithm game

2:34

like it's their game, and you have to play within their game,

2:36

right, you have to follow their rules. And so you

2:38

know, had I just stuck with what I was talking

2:41

about marketing stuff, agency stuff,

2:43

the growth would have compounded. But also understanding

2:45

that you're playing a game, which means if they see

2:47

your frequency decrease, you're also going to get deg for

2:50

that too, Right, you got to keep on going on the hamster

2:52

whel if you're going to play this creator game number

2:54

three. I used to not encourage

2:56

comments. It was the biggest mistake that I made

2:59

when I started off or one of the big mistakes

3:01

because the more comments engagements you get, the

3:03

more viral your content goes on

3:05

YouTube. You need encourage comments,

3:08

and I wasn't doing that. I wouldn't try to

3:10

ask people questions in the video to try to get

3:12

him to leave a comment. Once they started doing that, my viewcounts

3:14

started shooting up. Number

3:16

four, So if

3:19

you have any type of offering at all, I mean,

3:21

you can definitely add the icons if you

3:23

go to the profile section so people can click on it

3:25

in the banner. But also at the same time, you

3:27

have the pin comment, which

3:29

is the first comment, and you also have you can put in your

3:32

first link right. For me, for the longest time,

3:34

I didn't put our you know, whatever it

3:36

was that we're offering or whatever was relevant to

3:38

the video. And if you look at a meet Kevin,

3:41

he's a big YouTuber. He does a good

3:43

job with putting all his offers. Maybe it's too

3:45

many offers, but he puts the offers in there,

3:47

and he puts it in the pin comment right. So if you want to drive

3:49

people to try to take an action or a next step,

3:52

that's your opportunity. Cool Number

3:54

five. One thing that I used to

3:56

believe in with YouTube is if

3:58

you ran ads, you can splowed and you

4:00

can grow so much faster. So I'd run

4:02

intoen ads. I spend a lot of money. My viewcount

4:05

went through the roof. My subscriber count didn't.

4:07

Those people would just view and they wouldn't come back.

4:09

Once they stopped running ads, my views is

4:11

tanked and they went back to where it was.

4:14

So if you're thinking about running ads, be

4:16

really careful about it. In most cases, it doesn't work

4:18

the way you want to get really good subscribers.

4:21

The organic way it works much better. Number

4:24

six so not testing.

4:26

So what I mean by that is you can use a tool like

4:28

too Buddy and you can run ab testing on the

4:30

thumbnails. But also at the same time, I remember

4:33

I had a video recently on how to find NFT

4:35

influencers to work with right, and the video

4:37

sucked for the first four days, and I just

4:39

kept changing the title. Right, And now that

4:42

videos are our number one video right, And I think it's

4:44

going to continue to ramp over the years. It's going to be one of

4:46

those evergreen ones. But just think

4:48

about, hey, like if this title fell flat, like what else can I

4:50

do? Because you already spent the time to make that video.

4:52

So ideally you are switching up the thumbnails

4:55

and you're switching up the titles, and I'll give you a little bonus,

4:57

don't try to be all over the place with your thumbnails.

5:00

Me, I have a theme. My color is purple,

5:02

typically purple with a little bit of orange. If

5:04

you keep trying to change it all the time, it's gonna be hard

5:06

for people to see it. Right, because the name of the game here is you're

5:08

trying to with the headline and thumb nail. You're

5:10

trying to get a higher click through rate, and that way you get

5:12

more traffic. Past but not least not telling

5:15

people to subscribe. I used to create videos

5:17

and I would tell them to subscribe at the very end,

5:19

where in many cases not to them to subscribe at all.

5:21

Now, if you look at all my videos, I tell people to subscribe

5:24

at the beginning. It really helps me get

5:26

way more YouTube subscribers. You know who

5:28

does a really good job with this grim stuff and like he

5:30

by the way, he lives in Vegas, and he's like always like he'll

5:32

throw in the like button right. That works really well,

5:34

and I think a lot of people copy him. So take a look at what

5:37

he does too. Don't forget the rate review and subscribe to this
