Anthology horror that's loosely tied together by a shared setting is one of my favorite setups for shows, so I came to this one ready to fall in love.I've ended up with... conflicted feelings. It's amazingly well-made. The production and sound design are beautiful, and it's a pleasure to listen to. And some of the episodes are amazing-- interesting, and unsettling in the best ways. But I feel like some fall short of the mark.I particularly enjoyed Mr. Bag, and Antler Elk. Both felt like love letters to the art on which they were based, really focusing on creating intense sensory images through sound, with the focus less on telling a narrative, and more on evoking a response in the listener. This worked really well for me combined with the show's premise of episodes based on artwork.Other episodes, though, have the start of good ideas and either over-explain them, or get my buy-in but then don't follow through with a payoff. I loved Scissors until it... just kind of ended. There's a fine line between leaving a listener wanting just a bit more, and not given them enough to feel satisfied.I AM enjoying the show, and plan to keep listening to it. The episodes that nail it are fantastic, and even the ones that don't quite are enjoyable. I just really, really want ALL of them to land, because clearly the ideas and the talent are there!
Mayfair Watchers Society gives its listeners a chance to live inside Trevor Henderson's disturbing, beautiful and transcendent imagination. The monsters in MWS are all based upon Henderson's art. If you're unfamiliar with his work then look it up NOW. If you are familiar with his work then this show is an absolute must listen. The writer's room, cast and sound team on MWS are all at the top of their game in this series. A 'listen as soon as it drops' kind of show. Visit Mayfair Today!
A really good show - great storytelling and acting (so much so that I accidentally binge listened to it in a few days). The stories are creepy and the found footage aspect works well. It's often explained why someone is recording something, but even when it isn't the show works smoothly. There's definitely something peculiar about Mayfair. There's a hint of a wraparound story - with a recurring police officer and mention of 'exterminators' - but importantly each episode stands on its own.
Love, love, love it! I found this Society by accident, listening to Thirteen (another favorite!), and am so glad I did. I work solo, 10pm til 8am, caring for a client in a coma. For whatever reason, immersive audio dramas...more scary and twisted, the better...make my nights fly by! Hats off and thanks to all of you for filling, what would otherwise, be many very quiet nights!!
i like the concept of a small town anthology, but i feel like the audio quality varies wildly between episodes, which is a bit jarring. when the episodes are good they are QUITE good, but the writers don't seem to know where Mayfair is. there's an entire episode about elk hunting where the main character is doing an astonishingly bad southern accent. or really, a caricature of a southern accent. no one else in the episode is doing a southern accent, and since it was PAINFULLY obvious the voice was an affectation, I google the voice actress, Janine Bowershe's from Albany... so why make the choice to do such an embarrassingly bad accent when no one else is? I think if the writers can corral the actors and get a coherent idea of where Mayfair is supposed to be set, it would keep stories like this from taking the listener out of it
Funny horror (if such a thing exists). No really, I don´t like horror all that much, but this show is so well done, full of fun, unexpected twists and turns. Great production value, great writing and wonderful acting. Really entertaining, you laugh out loud, gasps, and sits at the edge of your seat. Great show!
An anthology set in a small town that attracts way way more peculiar events than any small town in the neglected and decaying Rust Belt ought to. I enjoy the premise a lot and connecting details from one story happening in the background of another. Some of these episodes are properly spooky. The audio can sound a little flat at times and the dialogue a little stiff. The episodes I enjoy I really like and the other episodes are still decently produced.
Trevor Henderson provides terrifyingly beautiful creatures, and this podcast helps expand on them and the world they live in. The characters and plots are often well written, and the anthology nature ensures that there is something here for everyone. Funny emotional at times, the podcast maintains a grounded tone that makes it easy to feel as if you are exploring Mayfair yourself. Some of my favorite Henderson creatures didn't get enough love/time in the spotlight in their respective episodes for my taste, but overall the focus on character driven stories with much of the monster-specifcs being left nebulous leads to a more suspenseful, engaging product overall.
