This story may not be for everyone! Russell Girten is an adoptee whose birth certificate was issued 9 days after he was born. He first was told that he was adopted at age 23, and when he began to tell his family and friends he was adopted, the common response was “I’m so glad they finally told him!”

Russell didn’t have a strong desire to meet his biological family, but when he was 56, a close match on 23andMe led him to them and unlocked the story of his biological roots. It helped him reframe his story and exposed him to the reality he was adopted from.

Although Russell’s adoptive parents provided him with many of the things necessary for him to bloom, his story includesabuse, neglect, and fear. He was adopted in South Carolina, a closed adoption state and it’s an issue that he’s faced.

Although there are challenges with the impact of his adoption and his life journey, Russell couldn’t be happier thathe was adopted. He works in volunteer roles that help children who have experienced displacement and trauma find their forever homes.
