his high school years, Stephen pursued higher

where he graduated with top honors in
7:10
English in 1978. Despite
7:13

7:20
embarked on this journey by joining the Peace Corps,
7:23
opting to dedicate his talents and energies
7:25
to making a positive impact on the

1979, Stephen embarked on his first

7:39

7:43
Stephen immersed himself in the local

language, Hausa. One
7:47
of his co-workers, Mike Nagel, said of him, I
7:50
think if anyone would represent our country

7:56
Upon his return to the United States in 1982, He
8:00
transitioned to a role at Peace
8:02
Corps headquarters in Washington, DC, where
8:04
he served as liaison to multiple
8:06
West African countries. It
8:09
was during this period that he crossed paths
8:11
with Wendy. Wendy,
8:14
who was born in Benin in 1956 to
8:17
parents Bela and Poco Pasco, was
8:19
raised in Togo. Coming
8:22
from a family deeply rooted in
8:24
faith, with her father serving as
8:26
a prominent pastor in the assemblies
8:28
of Godchurch, Wendy experienced a supportive
8:30
upbringing. Encouraged
8:32
by her parents to pursue her passions,
8:34
Wendy found herself drawn to basketball, a
8:37
sport her family embraced despite its unconventional
8:40
nature for girls at the time. Recognizing
8:43
the value of international experiences,
8:45
her parents instilled in her
8:48
the importance of cultivating a
8:50
global perspective. With
8:52
their encouragement, Wendy dedicated herself to
8:55
basketball, eventually representing Togo
8:57
at the international stage as a
8:59
member of the national basketball team,
9:02
competing in various international tournaments.
9:06
After securing scholarships to pursue higher
9:08
education in the United States, Wendy
9:10
eventually found herself as an undergraduate
9:12
student in Washington, DC. It
9:15
was there that she crossed paths with Stephen
9:17
Reed, introduced to him by a mutual
9:19
friend. This
9:22
friend had told Wendy of Stephen's
9:24
fluency in Hausa, a West African
9:26
language, and Parisian French. After
9:29
meeting Stephen, Wendy was thoroughly
9:32
impressed. Their
9:34
initial interaction sparked over a few runs of
9:36
tennis, and quickly blossomed into
9:38
a deep connection and they soon became
9:40
inseparable. Stephen's
9:43
friend Mike said of Wendy, She
9:45
was beautiful inside and out. They
9:48
were so good together. Wendy's
9:50
outgoing nature juxtaposed with Stephen's
9:53
reserved demeanor. But
9:55
despite their contrasting personalities, they
9:57
found harmony in their differences. As
10:01
the saying goes, opposites attract and
10:03
Wendy and Stephen complimented each other
10:05
perfectly. In 1984, Stephen
10:08
and Wendy exchanged vows in Senegal,
10:11
marking the beginning of their journey as a
10:13
married couple. Just
10:15
two years into their marriage, they welcomed
10:17
their first child, a daughter named Lindsay,
10:19
Wankuni. Then in 1989, Stephen
10:22
received an offer from the US
10:24
Agency for International Development to
10:26
collaborate with a local non-governmental
10:29
organisation based in Burkina Faso.
10:32
This organisation was dedicated to tackling
10:35
the interconnected challenges of climate change
10:37
and food security in West Africa.
10:41
With a sense of purpose and adventure, the
10:43
family made the decision to relocate, uprooting
10:46
their lives for this new opportunity. Wendy
10:49
contributed to their new chapter by serving
10:52
as a personnel assistant and later as
10:54
a community liaison officer for the American
10:56
Embassy. Stephen and
10:58
Wendy's dedication to their work was matched
11:00
by their genuine report with colleagues and
11:03
locals alike. Known
11:05
for their diligence, empathy and
11:07
unwavering compassion, they quickly
11:09
earned respect within their professional circles.
11:13
Despite Stephen's upbringing and relative
11:15
privilege, he approached his
11:17
interactions with humility and a profound
11:20
respect for local cultures. Wendy
11:23
stood steadfastly by his side, providing
11:26
unwavering support as they navigated the challenges
11:28
and adventures of their shared journey. The
11:32
family expanded further with the arrival of
11:34
their son, Brian Daniel, in 1990. Growing
11:38
up in a nurturing environment, Lindsay and
11:40
Brian were immersed in a household filled
11:42
with love and multicultural experiences. Stephen
11:46
and Wendy prioritised instilling in their
11:48
children a profound appreciation for global
11:51
community, as well as a
11:53
deep respect for the richness of human diversity
11:55
in all its forms. Their
11:58
upbringing was guided by values of empathy,
12:00
understanding and a celebration
12:02
of humanity's variety. Steven
12:06
soon earned himself a promotion to Associate
12:08
Director of the Peace Corps in Senegal,
12:11
and he led numerous projects. These
12:14
addressed important topics such as
12:17
reforestation, water supply, community development
12:19
and intercultural language training. He
12:23
eventually left the Peace Corps and
12:25
attended Syracuse University, where
12:27
he obtained a master's degree in public
12:30
administration. While he
12:32
was pursuing his endeavors, Wendy stayed at home
12:34
raising the children. Wendy
12:36
played a pivotal role in Steven's
12:39
career, offering invaluable support that contributed
12:41
significantly to his success. Often
12:44
joining him on his field trip,
12:46
she meticulously organised local logistics, provided
12:49
translation services, and edited
12:51
reports in both French and English. In
12:55
2003, she achieved a personal milestone by completing
12:57
the degree she had put on hold to
12:59
focus on raising their children. She
13:03
earned a Bachelor of Science in
13:05
Business Administration and subsequently pursued a
13:07
career as an admissions counsellor at
13:09
Suffolk University. The
13:12
Reed family later relocated to Burlington
13:14
in Vermont before embarking on a
13:16
new chapter in Haiti in 2009. Steven
13:21
was engaged in a project with the United
13:23
States Agency for International Development,
13:26
and they were in Port-au-Prince when the devastating
13:28
earthquake struck in 2010. Despite
13:32
the risks, they chose to remain in
13:34
the country, opting to lend their assistance
13:36
rather than evacuate like many other foreigners.
13:41
Then in 2019, after a
13:44
lifetime of shared adventures and selfless
13:46
service, Steven and Wendy returned
13:48
to Concord to embark on the
13:50
next chapter of their lives, retirement.
13:54
Those who loved the couple described them both as
13:57
caring and supportive of one another. They
14:00
had dedicated their lives to each other, and
14:02
they had an immense love for one another. Barbara
14:06
Reed, the wife of Stephen's brother,
14:09
Peter, recollected. In
14:11
2019, when Stephen Wendy decided to retire
14:13
in the Concord area, Peter
14:15
could not have been happier knowing his
14:18
brother would be around so they could
14:20
enjoy their retirement years together. It
14:23
was the simple things Peter looked forward to
14:25

14:43
was during the brief three years of their
14:45
retirement that I became closer to Wendy. She
14:48
became my confidant, my
14:50
trusted advisor, and one of
14:52
my best friends. In
14:54
his retirement, Stephen found himself enjoying an
14:56
old hobby of his that he hadn't
14:59
played for some decades. Tennis.
15:02
He made a handful of new friends, including
15:05
Jim Cassidy. Jim
15:07
had already met Stephen's brothers, and
15:10
the group all enjoyed playing tennis together. Not
15:12

15:39
They took care of their folks. But
15:42

15:50

16:11

16:16

16:18

16:22
unburdened schedules, Anna's asked for adventure.
16:25
They embraced each moment as it unfolded. The
16:29

16:31
complex to go for a hike. It
16:34
was about 2.22pm. Two
16:37
days later, Stephen was scheduled to play tennis
16:39
with his brother Peter, but he failed
16:42
to appear. Peter
16:44
called him up but the phone just rang and rang, and
16:47
the same for Wendy's phone. Peter
16:50
was concerned. Stephen's
16:52
punctuality was a hallmark of his character,
16:55
making his failure to appear all the
16:57
more alarming. Their
17:00
sister, Susan said. He wouldn't
17:02
have left people hanging without letting them know he wasn't
17:04
going to show up. Peter
17:07
contacted Susan and she drove over
17:09
to Stephen and Wendy's apartment. As
17:13
she pulled up outside she could see that their
17:15
cars were in their usual spots in the parking
17:17
lot. But
17:19
when she knocked on their front door, nobody
17:21
answered. The
17:23
apartment complex manager eventually let Susan
17:25
into the apartment. Stepping
17:28
into the familiar surroundings, she
17:31
scanned the apartment for any signs of her
17:33
brother and sister-in-law. Everything
17:36
appeared to be normal. The bed
17:38
was neatly made, a window was
17:40
left slightly ajar, but an
17:43
inexplicable tension hung in the air. Both
17:46
Stephen and Wendy's cell phones lay
17:48
abandoned on the kitchen counter, while
17:50
Stephen's wallet rested on another nearby
17:52
surface. It
17:54
seemed as though the couple had stepped
17:56
out of the apartment momentarily, intending to
17:59
return shortly thereafter. Susan's
18:01
concern deepened at the site, prompting her

to call police and report Stephen and

21:23
swiftly to Susan's call, Officers
21:25
Matthew Scheidel and Kristy Ann
21:27
DeSilvo arrived at the scene.
21:31
They meticulously searched the apartment, finding
21:33
everything in its place with no
21:35
indication of any disturbance. They
21:39
also discovered that there was no sign of
21:41
forced entry into the apartment. It
21:44
looked like Stephen and Wendy had locked it up
21:46
behind them, and then never returned. Recognising
21:50
the need for additional manpower, the
21:52
Officers promptly called for backup to assist
21:54
in canvassing the Oldton Woods apartment complex
21:56
in search of any clues. detectives
22:00
were made aware that Stephen and Wendy had gone
22:02
out for their routine hike on Wednesday afternoon. Since
22:06
it was clear they hadn't returned from
22:08
this hike, detectives considered the possibility that
22:10
Stephen and Wendy had an accident while
22:12
out hiking. It
22:14
wasn't uncommon for people to fall and
22:16
injure themselves. So
22:19
detectives began their search for Stephen and
22:21
Wendy in the many trails that surrounded
22:23
their apartment. Detective
22:26
James Parr recollected. We
22:28
just started off, we really had no start point,
22:30
we were just looking for a missing subject at
22:33
that time. So we just kind
22:35
of started off just quick, like I
22:37
said, took an overview of the map
22:39
and just find areas of probability that
22:42
a missing person could be. Detectives also
22:44
appealed to the public and
22:46
asked if anybody had seen Stephen or Wendy
22:48
or had heard for them to get in
22:50
contact right away. In
22:53
a statement they said, they are
22:56
avid outdoors people and are known to take
22:58
frequent walks along the trails near their Concord
23:00
residence. Their absence and
23:02
lack of contact with family and
23:04
friends are uncharacteristic and their
23:06
disappearance is of significant concern. The
23:17
detectives embarked on foot to the broken Grun
23:19
trails. Their senses heightened
23:22
as they meticulously scanned their surroundings.
23:25
With trained eyes they scrutinised the ground
23:28
for any telltale signs of disturbance or
23:30
footprints that might offer clues to
23:32
Wendy and Stephen's fate.
23:35
The leaves and branches crunched underneath their feet
23:38
as they called out for Stephen and Wendy, only
23:41
to be met by silence other
23:43
than the natural hum of nature.
23:45
The detectives searched for several hours,
23:48
but there was no sign of Stephen and Wendy
23:50
by the time Nightfall had descended on the area.
23:54
They called it a night just before midnight, as
23:56
the search was much too difficult in the pitch black.
24:00
By the next morning, detectives were back out
24:02
of broken ground trails searching once more for
24:04
the missing couple. That
24:06
morning they had the assistance of members
24:09
of the Central New Hampshire Special Operations
24:11
Unit and K9 sniffer dogs. While
24:14
this was ongoing, the investigation at the
24:16
couple's apartment continued. While
24:19
two cell phones had been found in the apartment
24:21
which were believed to have belonged to Stephen and
24:23
Wendy, it was discovered that
24:25
this wasn't the case. Wendy's
24:28
cell phone was there, but the other
24:30
one wasn't Stephen's. It
24:32
was simply a spare cell phone. Detectives
24:35
surmised that Stephen may have taken his cell phone
24:37
with him when the couple went on their hike.
24:41
They submitted an urgent request to Google
24:44
for location information related to Stephen's
24:46
Google account, which collects location
24:48
data from cell phone users. At
24:51
about 5.10pm that evening, Google responded
24:53
to the request. Stephen's
24:56
cell phone data showed the couple had left
24:58
their apartment at around 2.42pm and
25:01
headed towards the nearby Marsh Loop Trail, which
25:04
is part of the broken ground trails. The
25:07
last GPS coordinates from Stephen's
25:10
cell phone were at 3.47pm
25:12
with an 11-meter accuracy measurement.
25:16
The GPS showed that Stephen's phone was
25:18
in a wooded area off the Marsh
25:20
Loop Trail. After
25:22
analysing the gathered data, the detectives honed
25:24
their search for the missing couple on
25:26
the Marsh Loop Trail. As
25:30
they combed through the dense foliage, a keen-nosed
25:32
sniffer dog picked up a scent, leading
25:35
them to a pile of leaves and sticks
25:37
nestled among the trees. Drawing
25:40
closer, the detectives carefully cleared
25:42
away the natural camouflage, revealing
25:45
a human head. The
25:48
stark contrast of the dark-skinned tone
25:50
and black hair against the earthly
25:52
surroundings immediately identified the
25:54
victim as Wendy. As
25:58
detectives secured the perimeter, In
36:08
releasing the composite sketch of Arthur Kelly,
36:11
detectives also announced that the reward fund
36:13
had been increased to $33,000. The
36:16
massive spike in money had come from an
36:18
anonymous donor, but he promised the money
36:21
only if somebody came forward in the next
36:23
60 days. In
36:25
early June, detectives released another image to the
36:28
public. This
36:30
time it was of a vehicle that had been spotted
36:32
at the scene on the day of the murders. It
36:35
was a green, late model
36:38
Toyota RAV4, and it was parked
36:40
near the walking trails. Detectives
36:42
asked for the public's help in identifying
36:44
either the driver or the owner of
36:47
the SUV. The
36:49
images had come from dashboard and personal
36:51
cameras that detectives had received from citizens
36:54
and also the operator of a local skill
36:57
bus. Detectives
36:59
hadn't been able to track down anybody
37:01
associated with the vehicle, and
37:03
the owner or driver hadn't come forward.

42:00
the man. But
42:02
as the investigation continued, detectives
42:05
were contacted by a local woman
42:07
named Nan Not. She
42:10
said that she had been walking her dogs on the trail
42:12
on the 18th of April when the reeds
42:14
passed her. I was, we were probably just
42:16
a few minutes in, maybe as much as
42:18
five minutes in, and I
42:20
heard folk, a couple, or
42:22
at least what I thought was a couple because they
42:25
were talking to one another, coming up behind me. And
42:28
the trail is fairly narrow, partly
42:31
because of the bushes, and just it is
42:33
narrow. And I thought I
42:35
would be polite to step
42:37
off so that, because we, we, meaning
42:40
myself and the dogs, are pretty slow.
42:42
The dogs sniff, sniff, sniff, sniff, sniff,
42:44
sniff, everything. So I did
42:46
step off with the dogs, and these
42:48
folks went past me. They
42:50
appeared to be calm and relaxed, jotting as
42:53
they headed towards the wooded section of the
42:55
Marsh Loop Trail a short distance ahead of
42:57
her. Nan said that
42:59
she entered the wooded section soon after the couple.
43:02
I went on up the hill, and to
43:04
the, there's a marker that says Marsh Loops, right
43:07
at the woods. We went into the woods, and
43:10
within a fairly short time, three
43:12
to five minutes, or possibly a little more,
43:14
but that's an estimate also, suddenly
43:17
heard shots, very
43:19
loud. All of us
43:21
jumped, dogs and me. I
43:24
am not much of a gun person, but
43:27
my impression was that this was a
43:30
gun, not a rifle, because they were
43:33
high, higher pitched than I think of a
43:35
rifle as being. Nan
43:37
said that she paused for a moment, unsure
43:40
if she should continue or turn back. But
43:43
she eventually decided to continue,
43:46
walking along the track with her dogs. And
43:49
we saw a young man standing,
43:52
looking to the right of
43:54
the trail, into the woods. This
43:57
was consistent with the area where Stephen and Wendy
43:59
were ultimately. winter
50:00
months and brought a lot of small
50:02
propane tanks. He
50:05
described him as a white man, early
50:07
30s, who always wore a black baseball
50:09
cap and a black backpack. Walmart
50:12
was able to show surveillance footage of the
50:14
man, and it was clearly
50:16
the same man detectives had seen on the
50:18
earlier surveillance. And
50:21
it was clearly the man who identified himself
50:23
as Arthur Kelly. Intriguingly,
50:25
less than 24 hours after Stephen
50:27
and Wendy were killed, the
50:30
man purchased a new three-person tent,
50:32
a sleeping bag, and a bottle of 91% rubbing
50:35
alcohol. Detectives
50:38
theorised he needed these items since he
50:40
had burned his other campsite and tent
50:42
after the murders. Furthermore,
50:45
the rubbing alcohol could have been used
50:47
to clean blood or bodily fluids from
50:49
certain surfaces or used in
50:51
his accelerant. While
50:53
the man was making the purchase, he
50:56
didn't have the regular bandana covering his
50:58
face. After
51:01
he paid, he turned towards the camera.
51:04
When detectives glanced at his face,
51:07
they knew that it was Arthur Kelly for
51:09
sure. Detectives
51:17
returned to Walmart and discovered 12
51:19
separate transactions by Arthur, where
51:21
he had paid with five different debit cards.
51:25
However, they hit a wall when they learned that
51:27
these were all prepaid debit cards. These
51:30
can be purchased without any
51:32
identification and are not linked to a specific
51:34
person. The detectives
51:36
still searched the debit card numbers and
51:39
found that three of the cards belonged to Meda
51:41
Bank, located in Sioux Falls,
51:44
South Dakota, and the other two belonged
51:46
to Sutton Bank, located in
51:48
Attica, Ohio. Detectives
51:51
reached out to the banks to learn more
51:53
information. They were
51:55
able to share with the detectives the
51:57
full credit card numbers, the activation date,
51:59
full balance on each card. When
52:03
detectives looked through the transaction history, they
52:05
found that there were true
52:08
transactions to bulksupplements.com. Detectives
52:11
contacted the owner of the website,
52:13
who revealed that the customer was a

man named Logan Clegg. Do

56:02
off. While Corey
56:04
died a short time later, local
56:06
prosecutors decided not to press charges.
56:10
Then on the 10th of August 2020,
56:12
Clegg was arrested in Salt Lake for
56:15
shoplifting from a local Walmart. When
56:18
he was searched he was found to be carrying a .45 calibre
56:20
handgun. He told
56:23
the responding officers that he wished he had a
56:25
chance to pull the gun out and fight them
56:27
one on one. He said
56:29
that he would rather die than fucking go
56:31
to prison. The
57:19
handgun was entered into evidence, and
57:21
it was discovered that it had been stolen
57:23
from Al's Sporting Goods in the town of
57:25
Logan around two weeks earlier. Nineteen
57:28
days after this incident, Clegg was arrested
57:31
again in Logan by officers responding to
57:33
a burglary in progress. He
57:36
fled from the officers, but once he was caught,
57:38
he was found to be carrying a loaded handgun.
57:42
Once more this was discovered to have been stolen
57:44
from Al's Sporting Goods. Clegg
57:47
served 72 days in County Jail before he was
57:50
released on the 9th of November 2020. But
57:54
on that date he was sentenced to 36 months
57:57
of probation for charges of failed
57:59
to stop command of law
58:01
enforcement, theft by receiving
58:03
stolen property, burglary and theft.
58:06
As part of his probation sentence, he
58:09
was ordered to obey all state, federal
58:11
and municipal laws, not to
58:13
possess any firearms and not to abscond. He
58:17
had been ordered to meet with his parole officer
58:19
on a weekly basis, but in July
58:21
of 2021, he failed to appear at his
58:23
scheduled meeting.
58:27
An arrest warrant was issued, and
58:29
US Homeland Security investigation discovered that
58:31
he had fled to Lisbon in
58:33
Portugal. He eventually
58:35
returned to the country on 7 November After
58:41
Logan Clegg was identified as the lead
58:44
suspect, detectives tried to track him down.
58:47
They had a name and a mug shot
58:49
so they conducted a canvas of several fast
58:51
food restaurants in Concord. They
58:54
soon learned that Clegg had worked at the McDonald's
58:56
on Lude on Road. According
58:59
to his co-workers, he was a
59:01
loner who became furious if anybody ever
59:03
went near his belongings. He
59:06
reportedly muttered to himself and would randomly
59:09
start to scream. If
59:11
ever he were angry, he would slam
59:13
his hand on the surface. Some
59:16
said he gave off serial killer or
59:19
school shooter vibes. The
59:21
manager at McDonald's provided detectives with
59:23
Clegg's email address, and Google provided
59:26
them with more information. When
59:29
the email address was first set up, it
59:31
was under the name Arthur Kelly, but it's
59:33
since been changed to Logan Clegg. While
59:37
detectives continued trying to track him down,
59:39
they received a phone call from Detective
59:41
Matt Pierce at the Logan City Police
59:43
Department. He
59:46
had been assisting with the investigation, and
59:48
had just learned that a flight had been
59:50
booked under the name of Logan Clegg. It
59:53
was out of the JFK airport on the
59:56
14th of October, heading to Berlin. More
59:59
importantly, It was a one-way ticket. The
1:00:02
detectives learned that Clegg had listed his
1:00:05
address on the ticket as being in
1:00:07
South Burlington, Vermont, and he provided
1:00:09
a phone number. When
1:00:12
detectives traced this number, they
1:00:14
found that it was in the vicinity of Centennial
1:00:16
Woods Natural Area, a 3.8-mile hiking loop. Detectives
1:00:20
made their way to the area on
1:00:22
the 12th of October, and by chance
1:00:25
they spotted Logan Clegg entering the
1:00:27
South Burlington Community Library on Market
1:00:29
Street. Detectives
1:00:32
set up a perimeter with four officers outside,
1:00:35
while four more entered to keep an eye
1:00:37
on Clegg. They
1:00:39
watched him for several hours as he sat at
1:00:42
a computer with his headphones on, oblivious
1:00:44
to those around him. Eventually,
1:00:47
the four plan clothed, but armed,
1:00:49
detectives approached him and arrested him
1:00:51
without incident. After
1:01:06
four long and tedious months, the
1:01:08
lead suspect was finally in custody.
1:01:19
Logan Clegg was transported to South
1:01:21
Burlington PD headquarters, where he was
1:01:23
interviewed by detectives. They
1:01:26
told him that they were investigating a double
1:01:28
murder in Concord. Clegg
1:01:31
said to detectives he didn't believe he was in Concord
1:01:33
at the time of the murders, and
1:01:35
that he had possibly left in February or March,
1:01:38
when there was still snow on the ground. According
1:01:41
to Clegg, he didn't sleep at the Broken Ground
1:01:44
Trails, and he didn't use a tent.
1:01:47
They claimed that he used tarps to create a shelter. When
1:01:51
asked about the purchases of Walmart, including
1:01:53
the propane tanks, Clegg denied that
1:01:55
it was him. However,
1:01:58
the detective said he could clearly be seen. Steve
1:14:00

1:14:02

1:14:06

1:14:08

them. Where
1:14:17
your representatives are legally required to

1:14:22
and Wendy's representatives are here out of
1:14:24
love. My
1:14:27
message to you, Mr. Clegg, is this. You
1:14:30
have done nothing to contribute to society and you
1:14:32
never will. I pity
1:14:34
how weak you are, how empty you must
1:14:36
be, and how you have wasted
1:14:38
a perfectly healthy life. My
1:14:41
family is strong and we're smart and
1:14:44
we have what you don't have, which
1:14:46
is meaning, purpose, each other,
1:14:49
and love. Thank you, Your Honor. Clegg
1:14:52
then asked whether he had a statement. Those
1:14:56
detectives did everything in
1:14:58
their power in the last year to cheat me out
1:15:00
of getting a proper trial. That fact
1:15:03
should be obvious to anyone, biased against
1:15:05
me or not. When
1:15:07
you have to throw sand into your opponent's eyes
1:15:09
in order to win, that's a sure sign that
1:15:11
you're not the one who deserves to win. If
1:15:14
the Supreme Court agrees with me, then I may
1:15:17
very well get a new trial. So
1:15:19
no one need hold out hopes that I have
1:15:22
any imminent suicide on my account. No
1:15:24
man with any pride or dignity gives up
1:15:26
just because he loses a single battle, especially
1:15:29
when he knows he's in the right. If
1:15:31
it does come to a second battle, I can
1:15:33
promise with confidence that my innocence
1:15:35
will be made clear and that
1:15:38
I will win. I'd also like to
1:15:40
add that while I may have
1:15:42
been convicted, it was certainly through no fault of
1:15:44
my attorneys. Few attorneys, if any,
1:15:46
in this country have ever worked harder or
1:15:48
made more sacrifices for a defendant than Carrie
1:15:51
and Maya had for me in the last
1:15:53
year. Regardless of how anyone
1:15:55
feels about me or this case,
1:15:58
they should recognize that they should be lucky. and
1:16:01
this court should consider themselves lucky to have either
1:16:03
of them as a defender in this state. Superior
1:16:06
Court Judge John Kissinger Jr. began
1:16:09
his statement by first of all saying
1:16:11
that there was no basis to Clegg's
1:16:13
claims of police misconduct. He
1:16:16
then continued. What
1:16:18
makes this case so hard to comprehend
1:16:20
and some of the victim statements referenced
1:16:22
that earlier today is
1:16:25
the question that may never be answered. Why?
1:16:32
I don't have an answer for any of you today and as
1:16:36
I said we may never have an answer to
1:16:38
that question. But
1:16:40
as I think about the appropriate sentences
1:16:43
in this case for Mr. Clegg there
1:16:45
are some things that are clear. On
1:16:48
the afternoon of April 18th 2022 Stephen
1:16:51
Wendy Reed left their home and went for a
1:16:54
walk. They went
1:16:56
on a trail in the woods, a
1:16:58
place many people from Concord go to,
1:17:01
to mountain bike, walk,
1:17:04
their dogs, to hike
1:17:06
in a place of peace. Shortly
1:17:09
after they entered the woods they
1:17:11
encountered the defendant. By
1:17:14
all accounts a total stranger to them before
1:17:16
that day. For
1:17:18
some incomprehensible reason he
1:17:20
pulled out his 9 millimeter
1:17:22
semi-hand automatic handgun and
1:17:26
shot them multiple times killing them.
1:17:30
There is no question he had a 9 millimeter
1:17:32
handgun. The
1:17:35
evidence came in about his purchase of that gun
1:17:37
and he was found with that gun when he was
1:17:39
arrested in Vermont. As
1:17:42
I think about this case though I
1:17:45
thought a lot about what
1:17:48
Stephen and Wendy must have felt when
1:17:50
the defendant pulled out that gun and started firing
1:17:52
on them. No
1:17:55
reason, no justification, the
1:17:58
senseless horrific murder of two innocent
1:18:00
people. He then
1:18:02
handed Logan Clag two sentences of 50 years
1:18:04
to life in prison for the double murder.
1:18:07
I truly
1:18:09
hope he engages rehabilitation but
1:18:12
there's no chance if this
1:18:14
sentence holds that he will spend a day
1:18:16
outside of the prison. Well
1:18:45
besties that is it for this episode
