1:50

Melbourne is often regarded as

1:52

Australia's cultural capital. It's

1:55

a vibrant and cosmopolitan city located

1:57

in the southeastern state of Victoria.

2:00

of the Southlies Prince's Park.

2:02

Since it has one of the city's most popular

2:04

running tracks, it's often teeming

2:06

with young students. It

2:08

was originally established in the 19th century, but

2:11

has evolved into a popular recreational space. The

2:15

park spans about 38 hectares and features lush greenery, open

2:20

spaces and

2:22

recreational facilities. The park is a very

2:25

popular place in the United States. Open

2:27

spaces and recreational facilities.

2:30

One of the park's most notable features

2:33

is the historic Prince's Park Oval, which

2:35

has a long and storied history in

2:37

Australian Rules football. The

2:40

Oval is the former home-ground of the

2:42

Carleton Football Club, one of the oldest

2:44

and most successful clubs in the Australian

2:46

Football League. The club

2:48

led its home games at Prince's Park until 2005,

2:52

before relocating to the Melbourne Cricket

2:54

Ground and later to Marvel Stadium.

2:58

Beside Prince's Park lies Melbourne

3:00

General Cemetery, and to

3:02

the north, it borders the corner of

3:04

Royal Parade and Park Street. It's

3:07

close to all of the pubs that dot Sydney Road

3:10

and is seen as a shortcut for people

3:12

making their way to and from work, or

3:14

to and from pubs. In

3:17

March of 2018, a woman

3:19

was sexually assaulted close to Prince's

3:21

Park. The assailant

3:23

had approached the woman from behind, trapped

3:26

her in a bear hug, and the pair fell

3:28

to the ground where he sexually assaulted her. The

3:31

victim screamed within earshot of nearby homes

3:34

and managed to escape. She

3:37

later commented, It was the only

3:39

time I thought someone could rip me out of this world.

3:42

The incident left a palpable fear in its

3:44

wake, with many women hesitating

3:46

to walk the park's paths alone, especially

3:49

after dark. Tragically,

3:52

however, less than three

3:54

months later, another young woman would confront

3:56

that very fear. But

3:58

she wouldn't make it out alive. Radice

4:15

Dixon was born to parents Jeremy

4:17

Dixon and Kate Walters in Melbourne,

4:19

Australia on 10

4:21

November 1995. She had an

4:24

older sister Polly Cotton and a younger

4:26

brother John, who was born six years

4:29

after her. Radice

4:31

later told people that her mother had named

4:34

her after a figure in Greek mythology, Radice,

4:37

a daughter of Apollo. Her

4:40

mother had told her that before she was conceived,

4:42

she had dreamed of having a daughter with that

4:44

name. But

4:47

just a year after John was born, the

4:49

family received a knock on their front door

4:51

from police. They

4:54

were there to inform them that their mother had

4:56

been found dead in a shopping centre. Tragically,

5:00

Kate had struggled with heroin addiction

5:03

and she had overdosed accidentally. Jeremy,

5:07

who was an anarchist and political

5:09

activist, was left to

5:11

raise Radice and her siblings alone, but

5:14

he provided them with everything they could ever want in

5:16

life. The family

5:18

lived in a top floor flat in a

5:20

three-storey public housing block around 100 metres east

5:24

of Princes Park. Those

5:27

who knew the family said that Jeremy did a

5:29

great job as a single father and

5:31

he lived for his children. While

5:34

growing up, Radice began to notice that she was

5:36

different than the other people in her class at

5:38

school. She was quiet

5:40

and reserved and enjoyed to keep herself to

5:43

herself and read a good book. She

5:46

had always stood out from the crowd, with her

5:48

bold and bright outfits to the way she

5:50

composed herself. Those who

5:53

knew her growing up said that she struggled to fit in

5:55

at school, but she soon found

5:57

a community that understood, accepted and loved

5:59

her. While

6:02

attending Princes Hill Secondary College in

6:04

Carleton North, your Eddysea discovered her

6:06

love of performance and comedy. She

6:09

was a regular performer with the Burwood

6:12

students theatre company based in Deakin University.

6:15

Her drama teacher Tracey Carroll described

6:18

her as the quintessential, passionate drama

6:20

kid, she further said. She

6:23

had a select and tight-knit group of

6:25

other non-showoffs and was oblivious to being

6:28

cool or popular. She was

6:30

loving, loyal, authentic. After

6:34

your Eddysea graduated she studied drama and

6:36

performed in a Brunswick theatre group. She

6:40

was described as an independent spirit who

6:43

always provided an ear and wise words

6:45

for anybody having a hard time. Much

6:48

like her father, she was an

6:51

anarchist, an anti-authoritarian as well as

6:53

a talented debater. Your

6:56

Eddysea had ambitions to become a well-known comedian

6:59

and after university she started performing

7:01

comedy gigs in the local bars

7:03

of Melbourne. A

7:05

tall and striking woman, whenever she stepped

7:08

out onto the dimly lit venues, she

7:10

commanded the stage. She

7:13

had a smart and sharp comedic style

7:15

and an infectious smile. One

7:18

of her friends, Jai Ashman, recollected.

7:21

Your Eddysea was usually pretty quiet but one of

7:24

the nicest people you could ever meet and could

7:26

destroy with a mic in her hand. Your

7:29

Eddysea, who was known for her

7:31

wit and intelligence, blazed a trail

7:34

in stand-up comedy, blanting

7:36

confrontational humour with wit. Her

7:39

breakthrough came at the Yes or Woman open

7:41

mic comedy night at Studio 59 in 2016.

7:47

The venue was packed and Your Eddysea

7:49

had the audience in stitches with every

7:51

joke she delivered. Despite

7:54

her staunch feminism, she

7:56

didn't shy away from poking fun at her

7:58

own values. It's

8:00

just because I have a bit of a tendency

8:03

to worry a lot about

8:06

things that I shouldn't worry

8:08

about. Sometimes

8:11

I worry... You

8:15

know, I end up in a slave society.

8:19

You know, just girly things. Just

8:23

normal shit, right? You

8:25

worry about the shift. We

8:28

really should. It's not gonna happen for

8:30

ages. We'll

8:33

all be dead by then. It's

8:37

not gonna happen until the robots take

8:39

over. But

8:41

I can't stop worrying, right? In

8:44

my mind I'm like, shit. I'm

8:48

trying to be more optimistic. So

8:51

I'm like, slave society? That

8:54

means no one has any rights. We'll

8:58

finally have gender equality. Her

9:05

comedy routine involved taking feminist

9:07

or progressive political orthodoxy and

9:10

turning it inside out and upside down

9:13

to reveal the humorous side. Her

9:16

good friend, Kieran Butler, said of her, I

9:18

couldn't get my head around how she could stand

9:20

on stage even when the crowd didn't get her

9:23

humour. I didn't shake her. She

9:26

could stand tall against that. You

9:28

just don't get sensibility like that in

9:30

someone so young because at 22 years

9:32

old most don't have enough to say.

9:34

But she did. On

9:44

the evening of 12 June

9:47

2018, Your Addersey posted a

9:49

link on Facebook to her upcoming

9:51

comedy show. She wrote,

9:54

I'm doing this tomorrow. You guys

9:56

should come along and watch. It will be

9:58

a good night. High

11:32

was performing a comedy gig at the

11:34

Highlander Bar, located along a

11:36

lame way between Flinders Street and

11:39

Flinders Lane in Melbourne, CBD. Each

11:43

week the Highlander Bar put on a free comedy

11:45

night and emerging comedians would take

11:47

turns on the mic. The

11:50

next night at 8pm, Radice

11:52

arrived at the Highlander Bar. She

11:56

was giddy with excitement to see that the

11:58

bar was packed. She

12:00

entered the upstairs function room to prepare

12:03

for her routine. Her

12:05

boyfriend, Tony Magnussen, met her there

12:07

and wished her the best of

12:09

luck. Your

12:12

Addison graced the stage at 8.50pm. Her

12:16

performance was part of the Melbourne International

12:18

Comedy Festival and the

12:20

bar was filled. She

12:23

was a regular at that bar and was

12:25

known for her ability to command the attention

12:27

of the entire room as she performed. One

12:31

of the workers, James Forman, commented. Everybody

12:34

who knew her at the bar would comment on

12:36

what a lovely and polite person she was. She

12:39

was quite shy and very reserved, which

12:42

was strange because once she got up on

12:44

the stage she'd have the attention of the

12:46

whole room and they'd all be laughing. During

12:49

her performance Your Addison discussed feminism,

12:52

gender rights and poked fun at herself. Her

12:55

sat lasted about 10 minutes and

12:58

after she left the stage she watched the

13:00

rest of the performers alongside her boyfriend, Tony.

13:04

By 10.20pm all of the performers had concluded

13:07

and Your Addison and Tony capped

13:09

off the night with a drink at the bar

13:11

before it was time to return home. They

13:14

laughed at about 10.40pm and walked

13:17

to Woolworths on Flinders Street where

13:19

Your Addison purchased a paleo bar

13:21

for her journey home. Tony

13:24

recollected. She was

13:26

happy and content. She gave me a

13:29

hug, blew me a kiss and said she was

13:31

going for a walk. She

13:33

was on top of the world because her gig went so

13:35

well. Tony was getting

13:37

the tram back home, but Your Addison

13:39

said that she was going to walk, so

13:42

they went their separate ways at Swanseton Street.

13:46

Tony boarded the tram heading towards St

13:48

Kilda Road while Your Addison

13:50

set off in the direction of Prince's Park

13:52

alone. It

13:54

was a park that Your Addison knew well. It

13:58

was located in an affluent northern south of the North. of

14:00

the city and wasn't too far

14:02

away from her apartment. She

14:05

often walked through it after performing her comedy gigs

14:07

in the city. She had

14:10

a habit of slipping off her socks and

14:12

shoes and walking barefoot. Your

14:15

Edyssey had said to friends that she liked the

14:17

feeling of cold clipped grass on her soles, but

14:20

she always made sure to message her friend

14:22

or whoever she was with earlier that night

14:25

to let them know she was almost home.

14:29

Just before midnight she messaged her

14:31

boyfriend Tony on Facebook. I'm

14:33

almost home safe, how about

14:35

you? At

14:42

about 2.40 a.m. in the early morning

14:44

hours, a man identified only

14:47

as Mr. Williams was cutting through

14:49

Princes Park. He

14:52

was walking home from work and

14:54

crossed over two of the soccer pitches. When

14:58

he drew close to the third soccer pitch, something

15:01

on the ground caught his attention. It

15:04

appeared to be a white bundle. But

15:07

as Mr. Williams got closer,

15:09

he could see that it was the lifeless

15:12

body of a young woman. Her

15:14

dress was ripped open at the waist

15:16

and her bra was pulled on, exposing

15:19

her breasts. Her

15:21

underwear had been ripped in half. She

15:24

was lying on her back with her legs bent. It

15:27

was Your Edyssey Dixon. Mr.

15:30

Williams rushed over to Your Edyssey and

15:32

crouched down beside her. He

15:35

tried to feel for a pulse,

15:37

but there wasn't one. He immediately

15:39

called triple zero, an attempt

15:41

at CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

15:45

But it was evident that Your Edyssey was

15:47

far beyond saving. Her

15:50

body was transported to the Medical Examiner's

15:52

office for an autopsy. The

15:55

pathologist found that Your Edyssey hits

15:58

a stand-blump for centuries to the

16:00

head, torso and limbs, as

16:02

well as bruises to the right jawline,

16:05

hands, knees and legs. Your

16:08

Adacy had also sustained a bruise to the forehead

16:11

with an underlying hemorrhage. There

16:15

was evidence that your Adacy had been raped with

16:17

force, with two tears

16:19

to the edge of her

16:22

vagina. Your Adacy was alive when

16:24

the sexual assault had happened, and

16:26

then she was strangled to death. She

16:30

had been strangled with such force that there

16:32

were bruises and abrasions to her neck, as

16:34

well as to the muscles. There

16:37

was also hemorrhage to the left hyoid bone.

16:41

The pathologist took swabs during the

16:44

autopsy, and these were submitted

16:46

for analysis. The

16:48

statement was discovered on a swab from your Adacy's

16:51

thigh, and two areas of her

16:53

dress. As

17:03

news of your Adacy's murder made headlines,

17:06

tributes for her came flooding in from

17:08

the comedy scene throughout Melbourne. The

17:12

Sunday age described her as a

17:14

universally loved and talented artist, while

17:16

the Highlander bar said in a statement, We

17:20

are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic

17:22

news of the death of your Adacy Dixon.

17:26

She was a remarkable, talented,

17:28

kind, unique and universally loved

17:31

person, and the entire

17:33

staff are shattered and heartbroken. Julia

17:36

Morris, an Australian comedian, television presenter

17:38

and actress posted on her Twitter

17:41

account, I'm absolutely

17:43

shattered to hear of the despicable death

17:45

of your Adacy Dixon. Our

17:47

comedy community is like a family, and

17:50

this news is beyond heartbreaking. My

17:53

deepest condolences go to your family

17:55

and friends. An important

17:57

and funny voice has been extinguished. Other

18:01

female comedians reacted to the news by

18:03

offering lifts to one another to and

18:05

from shows. Most

18:08

of them travelled alone late at

18:10

night, with comedian Rose Calligan commenting,

18:13

It's part of our job. She

18:16

added that sometimes she would get a lift,

18:18

or if she could afford it, an Uber.

18:20

But she said that sometimes the easiest

18:22

and most affordable way back home is to

18:25

walk. For

18:27

comedians starting out, they often perform for

18:29

free, or for very little money, and

18:32

they perform at bars and clubs at night. It

18:35

wasn't uncommon for them to walk home alone in the

18:37

dead of the night. But

18:40

this could be said for women across the globe

18:42

going to and from work, and

18:44

the murder of your addity struck fear

18:46

into the community. Women

18:49

were left too afraid to walk anywhere at

18:51

night, knowing that there was a

18:53

predator on the loose. They

18:56

didn't know if he was going to attack again, and

18:59

if so, who and when. Detective

19:03

Andrew Stamper touched on this

19:05

fear, commenting, If

19:07

people have any concerns at any time

19:09

for their own security, call triple zero.

19:12

We would much rather have too many calls than too

19:14

few. There was

19:17

a rallying cry in Melbourne for the safety

19:19

of women, but for this to happen,

19:21

men needed to change. Women

19:24

should have the right to walk home alone day

19:26

or night, not be afraid of

19:28

being raped and murdered. Victoria

19:31

Premier Daniel Andrews touched on this

19:33

on Facebook, posting, She

19:36

had a phone. She was using it. She

19:39

was keeping an eye on her surroundings, looking

19:42

out for herself, being responsible,

19:45

doing everything we expect. But

19:47

your addity did not make it home safe. He

19:51

then added, So our

19:53

message to Victorian women is this, Stay

19:56

home. Or don't. Go

19:58

out with friends at night. Or don't.

20:01

Go about your day exactly as you intend

20:03

on your terms. Because women

20:05

don't need to change their behaviour. Men

20:08

do. In

20:10

the wake of your Eddycees murder, a fundraising page

20:12

was set up to help raise money

20:14

for her family. In

20:17

less than 24 hours, it had surpassed its original goal

20:19

of $1,000 and raised more than $15,000. It

20:25

eventually swelled to over $74,000. And

20:28

your Eddycees father said

20:30

he wanted to donate a large portion

20:32

to the charities that his daughter supported.

20:36

The spot in Princes Park where your

20:38

Eddycees body was fond quickly became a

20:40

makeshift memorial. People

20:42

came out in droves to leave bouquets

20:44

of flowers, cards of condolences and other

20:46

trinkets on the grass close to the

20:48

soccer goal post. A

20:52

heart-shaped chain of yellow and orange jungles was

20:54

placed close to the running track. Nearby,

20:58

a female police officer placed

21:00

on a single white rose. The

21:07

investigation was already underway when detectives announced

21:10

they believed that your Eddycees had been

21:12

attacked by a stranger. It

21:16

was already the general consensus when they made

21:18

the announcement that your Eddycees had

21:20

been walking straight home alone. They

21:23

also announced that there was no connection

21:25

between your Eddycees murder and the earlier

sexual assault. True

21:32

crime stories often linger in your mind long

21:34

after you've covered them. This was particularly true

for me while working on the Jacqueline Duolaby

22:50

an effort to trace your eddiesies last known

22:52

movements and to try and identify a person

22:54

of interest, detectives began to

22:56

scar CCTV footage from the route you

22:58

would have taken to Prince's Park. They

23:02

first began checking the cameras at Swanston

23:04

Street, where your Addison Tony

23:06

had gone their separate ways. She

23:09

could be seen walking towards a

23:11

pedestrian crossing at the intersection of

23:13

Flinders Street and Swanston Street. At

23:17

first, everything appeared to be

23:20

normal, but when detectives

23:22

looked at the footage closer, they

23:24

could see a mom. He

23:28

was dressed in a grey hoodie and

23:30

was loitering near a construction area and

23:33

clearly watching your Addison. As

23:36

she crossed the road at the pedestrian crossing,

23:39

the mom began to follow her. Detectives

23:43

obtained further CCTV footage from

23:45

the area, which clearly

23:47

showed the same man following her further

23:49

down the road. He

23:52

maintained a constant distance behind her. Whenever

23:56

she slowed down or stopped, the

23:58

man did the same. Whenever

24:01

possible, he moved to the opposite side

24:03

of objects which obstructed her view of

24:05

him. Whenever

24:08

he did this, he appeared to roll

24:10

a cigarette, almost as if he

24:12

was trying to make himself appear innocent, in

24:14

case anybody was watching. The

24:17

same man followed your Eddysey all the

24:19

way over to Melbourne Central Shopping Centre.

24:23

She walked down a set of stairs,

24:25

and the man arrived at the stairs moments

24:28

later. Your

24:30

Eddysey walked around a large pillar,

24:32

and was walking back up the stairs towards

24:34

the man. He

24:37

could clearly be seen on the CCTV

24:39

footage using the pillar as cover. The

24:43

man appeared to let your Eddysey walk ahead of him,

24:45

as she continued walking

24:47

north, up Swanston Street. At

24:51

one point she stopped and waited for the lights to

24:53

change. The man stopped at a

24:55

pillar close to her, and rolled a cigarette. Once

24:59

the lights changed, she continued walking, and

25:01

the man continued following her. The

25:04

man maintained a steady 15-20

25:07

seconds distance behind your Eddysey,

25:09

until she walked past the University of

25:11

Melbourne on Royal Parade. This

25:15

was at 11.50pm, and the

25:17

man was now 50 seconds behind her. As

25:21

she continued north he increased his speed, and

25:24

within two minutes he had closed the gap to only

25:26

27 seconds. This

25:29

was the last time that the CCTV cameras

25:31

picked up your Eddysey. From

25:35

here she would have continued walking along

25:37

Royal Parade to Princes Park. It

25:40

was clear that the man had been following your

25:42

Eddysey for more than an hour, but

25:44

she hadn't noticed him. After

25:47

obtaining the CCTV footage, detectives released

25:49

an image of the man, and

25:52

said they wanted to speak with him. On

26:01

the night of the 14th of June,

26:03

19-year-old James Todd was at the home

26:05

he shared with his parents when

26:07

he was contacted by a friend of his. She

26:11

told him that she had just seen a news

26:13

segment on your Addissey's murder and

26:15

the image of the man that detectives wanted

26:17

to speak with. This

26:20

friend told Todd that it was clearly him

26:22

in the surveillance image and

26:24

told him he needed to reach out to police or

26:27

she would contact them herself. After

26:30

hanging up Todd called the Broadmeadows

26:32

police station. He

26:34

told the operator that it was him in the

26:37

surveillance footage but said they'd had

26:39

nothing to do with your Addissey's murder. He

26:42

said he'd been out with friends

26:44

that night and was making his

26:47

way home. The operator asked Todd to

26:49

come to the police station, which

26:51

he did at 8.30pm accompanied by his mother.

26:56

Todd sat down with the detectives but

26:58

he appeared to be nervous. He

27:02

gave at least three different and conflicting accounts

27:04

of where he was and what he was

27:06

doing the night that your Addissey was killed.

27:10

Todd said that he'd been drinking that night, smoked

27:12

some marijuana and had felt sick. He

27:16

said he'd missed the last train home

27:18

so fell asleep in the Royal Park

27:20

railway station and when he

27:22

woke up he had messages from friends saying

27:24

he was on television. The

27:27

detectives then explained to Todd the forensic

27:29

process which was going to be undertaken.

27:33

They informed him that he was going to receive

27:35

a full examination of any injuries as

27:38

well as DNA samples that would be compared

27:40

to those found at the crime scene. Todd

27:44

then looked on at his fate solemnly. He

27:48

then responded, don't

27:51

worry about the DNA, I did

27:53

it. I will tell you everything.

28:01

James Todd was the second of three brothers,

28:04

and he lived at home in broad meadows.

28:07

The family had lived in what was

28:09

described as catastrophic squalor. Even

28:13

from the exterior, passerby

28:15

could discern the dilapitation that

28:17

awaited within. The garden

28:20

was overrun with plants, the

28:22

fence was teetering on the brink of collapse,

28:25

and trash was strewn about. Inside,

28:29

the scene was one of neglect and

28:31

decay. Trash

28:33

overtook every corner, while

28:35

vermin skittered around amidst the grime.

28:39

The kitchen had even collapsed into the rotting

28:41

floor. In

28:43

Todd's world, a hotplate sat in

28:46

the bathroom beside a clogged toilet, serving

28:48

as the makeshift kitchen. Food

28:52

littered the floors of the other rooms, a

28:55

feast for mice and rats. This

28:58

was Todd's reality, and it was

29:00

shaped by his diagnosis of autism

29:02

and ADHD since childhood. His

29:06

journey was marked by a constant struggle to

29:08

belong, plagued by disruptive

29:10

behaviour in school and early

29:12

indications of anger issues, leading

29:15

to frequent transfers between primary schools.

29:19

His teachers extended their support, and

29:22

he received attention from several

29:24

child psychologists. Despite

29:27

their efforts, he faced expulsion

29:29

from high school, due to

29:32

his problematic behaviour. However, by 2018,

29:35

things were looking better for Todd. He

29:38

had enrolled in a hospitality,

29:41

employment and training programme at

29:43

the Haster-Hornbrook Academy. Those

29:46

who knew him there said that he was friendly, but

29:49

they would soon learn that this was only a

29:51

facade. For

29:53

at night, Todd locked himself

29:55

in his filthy bedroom and

29:58

obsessively watched snuff porn. A

30:01

genre where the woman always ends up

30:03

dead. After

30:10

Todd told detectives he would tell them everything,

30:13

he then changed his version of events from

30:15

the night that your Addissey was killed. But

30:19

even still, this varied from the

30:22

surveillance footage that detectives had already

30:24

collected. Todd

30:27

tried to claim he had only seen your

30:29

Addissey about five or ten minutes at most

30:31

before she reached the park. The

30:35

truth was that he had followed her for more than

30:37

an hour. According

30:39

to Todd, he asked your Addissey for

30:42

directions, but said that she

30:44

could barely tell him which way was which.

30:48

He said that at this moment he decided he

30:50

could grab her bag and run off once

30:52

they were off the street. He

30:56

followed your Addissey into the park and

30:58

told detectives that she was stumbling

31:00

around and was probably not in

31:02

a position to defend herself. He

31:05

stated, She was

31:07

really quite intoxicated. She

31:10

looked like she was on drugs. This

31:12

was another lie. Your

31:15

Addissey hadn't been drinking that night and tests

31:17

from her autopsy had proven this. According

31:21

to Todd, he only wanted your Addissey's money,

31:23

but he said that as he grabbed her,

31:25

she turned around and hit him. He

31:28

said the detectives he attempted to defend

31:30

himself and both he and your

31:33

Addissey fell to the ground. Todd

31:36

claimed that he didn't want to get in trouble

31:38

for what he described as a little bit of

31:40

money, so he began to choke

31:43

your Addissey and didn't stop. He

31:45

blamed his actions that night on the alcohol

31:47

and marijuana he had smoked, telling

31:50

detectives he wasn't thinking normally. But

31:54

detectives knew that Todd wasn't telling the

31:56

truth. Your Addissey

31:58

had been re-ipped and when this was After

36:04

Todd was remanded into custody, a vigil was held

36:06

for your Edise at the park where she had

36:08

lost her life. The organizer,

36:11

P. F. Cerveri, commented in the

36:13

media, Princes Park is

36:15

a beautiful community space and it's

36:17

about reclaiming that place and acknowledging

36:19

that women are often put at

36:21

risk by the behaviour of men

36:24

and that it's just not good enough.

36:26

The emphasis is on reclaiming that

36:28

space. It belongs to

36:30

everyone and everybody deserves to feel

36:32

safe there. But before

36:35

the vigil was held, crude graffiti

36:37

of a 25-metre by 5-metre ejaculating

36:41

penis was spray-painted over the memorial

36:43

for your Edise. Everybody

36:45

was surprised when fellow comedian,

36:48

Andrew Nulch, was arrested and charged

36:50

with criminal damage, offensive

36:52

behaviour and marking offensive graffiti.

36:56

Much like your Edise, he was an aspiring

36:58

comedian and he was known to friends

37:00

of hers. On

37:03

social media he had posted about her

37:05

murder, writing, The mainstream

37:07

media is running a brainwashing program

37:10

which is designed to make everyone think that

37:12

meals are bad. Despite

37:15

the setback, thousands of people came together

37:17

for the vigil, huddled in

37:20

silence underneath the dark sky. He

37:23

stood before the crowd and said, What

37:26

happened to your Edise has resonated

37:28

with so many people in Melbourne

37:30

and around Australia. The

37:33

message of the vigil was clear, to

37:35

honour and grave your Edise, but

37:37

to send a message that women have the right

37:39

to be safe anywhere at any time.

37:43

There was then a 20-minute silence during which

37:45

the lights in the field are switched off.

37:49

People could be heard sobbing as the flames

37:51

from their candles flickered in the breeze. The

37:55

silence was then broken by a choir

37:57

singing around the makeshift memorial. Other

38:00

vigils across Australia were held in

38:02

tandem, including one in Sydney's

38:04

Hyde Park, where the names of

38:07

dozens of recent victims of gendered violence

38:09

were rattled out. In

38:12

Perth, around 300 people gathered at Hyde

38:14

Park to light candles, hand

38:16

out flowers and pay tribute to your Eddysea.

38:20

Western Australia Minister for Women Simone

38:22

McGurk said to the crowd, It's

38:25

also about solidarity. As

38:28

women, we are well-schooled in how

38:30

to manage our personal safety, day

38:32

in and day out, week to

38:34

week, and for some it's hour to

38:36

hour. We all know good

38:38

men. We need these men to be

38:40

standing beside us and calling for change with us.

38:43

Their involvement and capacity to lead and

38:46

step forward is critical. Then

38:49

on the 21st of June, your Eddysea was

38:52

led to rest. Her

38:54

friends and family gathered at a funeral home

38:56

in Brunswick, but the media weren't

38:58

allowed near the service as the family had

39:01

asked for privacy. Pictures

39:03

of you by The Cure and

39:05

Johnny Cash's We'll Meet Again were

39:07

among the songs of the service. Your

39:11

Eddysea's great-uncle, Eric Dixon, her

39:13

sister Polly Cotton and her

39:15

drama teacher, Tracy Carroll, and

39:18

five friends provided eulogies. Then

39:22

in September, Andrew Noelch pleaded guilty

39:24

to defacing your Eddysea's memorial. In

39:27

court, his defence attorney, Glenn Thaxton, said

39:30

he knew it would upset your Eddysea's

39:32

family. It's sad that

39:34

he didn't like feminists. He

39:37

stated, his main feeling was

39:39

making a political statement. There's

39:41

quite a lot of symbolism about what he had

39:43

drawn. As he said in an interview,

39:47

if it had have been a flaw, then it wouldn't have

39:49

got the desired effect. The

39:52

defence attorney also said that his client

39:54

wasn't remorseful, but said that

39:56

he wouldn't do it again simply because he didn't

39:58

appreciate the attention. it had drawn

40:01

to him and his family. Magistrate

40:04

Olivia Trumbull, who described

40:06

his actions as despicable, sentenced

40:09

him to an 18-month community corrections

40:11

order in which he must

40:14

complete 200 hours of community service. At

40:18

sight of court, Andrew Nolch said to reporters,

40:21

I'm an advocate for equal rights for both

40:24

genders. Not all men

40:26

are bad. I did the

40:28

political graffiti because the mainstream media and

40:30

feminists turned the tragic murder

40:33

of Your Eddy C Dixon into

40:35

one giant political man-hating event. He

40:38

also spoke with Nine News. I

40:41

apologise to family and any offence I've

40:43

caused, but this needed

40:45

to be done. It was a revenge

40:47

attack, not at all

40:49

on Ureticea or anything, it was an attack on

40:52

the media on this huge issue that was being

40:54

turned into a women's rights thing and blaming

40:56

men. It was just, I just thought,

40:58

alright, you're gonna blame men, I'm just gonna draw a massive He

41:01

later appealed his conviction and accused his

41:04

lawyer of being incompetent. His

41:07

former lawyer responded and

41:09

said that his former client was simply crying

41:11

for attention. In

41:21

October, James Todd appeared in court via

41:23

video link, where he was informed

41:25

that he had been served with three extra charges

41:27

on top of the rape and murder charges. He

41:31

was further charged with two counts of

41:33

intentionally touching Your Eddy C in a

41:35

sexual manner and one count of

41:38

attempted rape. He

41:40

returned to court the next month, where

41:43

he surprisingly pleaded guilty to one

41:45

single count of rape, murder, attempted

41:47

rape and sexual assault. The

41:51

other charge was withdrawn. High

43:29

On 12 June 2018, Todd had

43:31

finished training at the Academy at

43:34

about 3pm. He

43:36

and three of his friends then caught a train

43:38

into Melbourne. After

43:41

they arrived in the city, they walked

43:43

to Batman Park, where they drank

43:45

a bottle of vodka, a bottle of

43:48

cider and smoked a small amount of

43:50

marijuana. At

43:52

about 8.30pm, they made their way to

43:54

Southern Cross Railway Station. Todd

43:57

purchased a bottle of Jim Beam Whiskey and

44:00

and called a broad Matt Osbond train with

44:02

one of his friends. He

44:05

left the train at Newmarket and

44:07

then returned alone by train to

44:09

Flinders Street Railway Station, arriving

44:12

at 10.25pm. It

44:15

was at this time that your Addison

44:18

Tony walked east from Highlander Lane on

44:20

Flinders Street towards the Flinders

44:22

Street Railway Station. They

44:25

walked to the corner of Swanston and Flinders Street,

44:27

crossed the road and then waited for

44:29

Tony's southbound tram. At

44:33

11.05pm, Tony caught the tram heading

44:35

towards St Kilda Road. At

44:38

this moment, Todd caught sight of

44:40

your Addison. He

44:43

hung around by a construction area as

44:45

she walked past him, heading towards the

44:48

pedestrian crossing at the intersection

44:50

of Flinders Street and Swanston

44:52

Street. He

44:54

immediately began to follow her. Your

44:57

Addison approached Flinders Lane and as she

44:59

did, Todd overtook her and sat down

45:01

on a stack of milk crates. He

45:05

waited for your Addison to pass him and

45:07

after she walked some distance ahead of him, he

45:10

continued following her. At

45:13

one point Todd was two minutes behind her, but

45:16

he closed in as she walked across the

45:18

soccer pitch in Prince's Park. Once

45:21

she reached the third soccer pitch, he

45:23

attacked her. The

45:26

legacy was knocked to the ground and quickly

45:28

subdued. Todd

45:31

then sat down on her chest, ripped open

45:33

her dress and pulled down her bra. He

45:36

then tore her underwear in half and

45:38

raped her by roughly forcing two fingers

45:41

into her vagina, causing tears.

45:45

Todd then attempted to rape her by inserting

45:47

his penis into her vagina, but

45:49

he was unable to maintain an erection. In

45:53

an effort to try and stimulate himself, he

45:56

slapped his penis on the outside of her mouth. was

46:00

the basis of the other charges against

46:02

him. While Todd was

46:04

doing this, he had one hand around

46:06

Uredecy's throat, and at some

46:08

stage, he placed both of his hands around

46:11

her throat and began to strangle her. Before

46:14

Todd fled from the scene, he

46:16

stole Uredecy's mobile phone. He

46:19

left Princes Park and headed to the

46:21

Royal Park railway station, arriving

46:24

at 2.14am. He

46:26

then fell asleep and woke up at

46:29

4am. CCTV

46:31

footage from the railway station

46:33

then showed him scrolling through

46:35

Uredecy's mobile phone. He

46:37

then left the railway station and

46:40

headed over to Princes Park, but

46:42

by the time he arrived, it was already cordoned

46:44

off with a crime scene tip. Todd

46:48

then travelled by foot and tram to Boundary

46:50

Road, where he purchased a

46:52

pie and a coffee sometime

46:55

after 6.15am. When

46:58

he arrived back home, he began watching Grape

47:00

Fantasy porn, including Strangulation.

47:04

It was as if he was reliving what he

47:07

had just done six hours earlier. Todd

47:15

returned to court on the 16th of August, where

47:18

the court heard testimony from

47:20

psychologist David Thomas. He

47:23

said that Todd had developed an obsession with

47:26

violent, coercive sex and choking and

47:29

had watched violent porn before and after

47:31

his attack on Uredecy. He

47:35

said that he diagnosed Todd with Sexual

47:37

Sadism Disorder and that this

47:39

had motivated his attack. Sexual

47:43

Sadism is a rare disorder that

47:46

is found almost exclusively in

47:48

violent sexual offenders. Todd

47:51

had experimented once with rough sex

47:53

with a former girlfriend, but

47:55

she didn't like it, so he never tried it again.

48:00

Dr. Thomas believed that Todd remained

48:02

a significant risk of reoffending because

48:04

of his disorder. The

48:07

doctor had assessed Todd and he revealed that Todd

48:09

had told him that as soon as he entered

48:11

the park after your eticy, he knew

48:13

he was going to try and rape her. When

48:17

he first saw her on the street, he

48:19

was attracted by what he described as her

48:21

goth look. He

48:24

looked similar to the women in the type of

48:26

pornography he had been searching for. Dr.

48:30

Thomas further said he believed that Todd was

48:32

remorseful for what he had done, but said

48:35

that his autism had made this remorse

48:37

an intellectual feeling of remorse rather than

48:39

an emotional one. Psychologist

48:42

Professor James Ogloff had also

48:45

assessed Todd and he

48:47

told the court that when your eticy began

48:49

panicking, it aroused Todd more.

48:52

He also revealed that Todd had confessed to

48:55

his father after he was arrested, but he

48:57

had chillingly told him that he felt like

48:59

shit and hoped he'd be better

49:01

next time. He

49:03

meant that the rape and murder of your

49:06

eticy had failed to fulfill his expectations. Professor

49:10

Ogloff testified. He

49:13

said it didn't turn out how he planned. Much

49:16

like Dr. Thomas, Professor Ogloff wasn't

49:18

confident that Todd could be rehabilitated

49:21

and said that he really didn't have any feelings

49:23

about the murder. He

49:26

further said that he wanted to make it clear that

49:28

the vast majority of people on the

49:31

autism spectrum don't display

49:33

violence. The

49:35

biggest contributing factor to his actions,

49:37

the professor said, was his

49:40

sexual sadism disorder. He

49:43

had begun watching pornography at the age of 13 and

49:46

in the year leading up to your eticy's murder,

49:49

it had become increasingly violent. After

49:53

the psychologist testified, your eticy's

49:55

family were given the opportunity to

49:57

provide victim impact statements. Her

50:01

sister Polly Cotton said, My

50:04

sister's murder has absolutely shattered and

50:06

devastated our family. I

50:09

will never see my little sister again. She

50:12

lived an honourable life. She

50:14

was gutsy and determined and clever, and

50:16

when I think of her, I feel proud. Your

50:20

Eddysea's boyfriend Tony said he still suffered

50:22

from nightmares about what had happened. He

50:25

would wake up in the middle of the night to the

50:28

sound of her screaming. He

50:30

then added, There's no doubt

50:33

in my mind that I will never look

50:35

at the human race the same way again.

50:39

Todd's defence attorney was requesting leniency

50:41

for his client. He

50:44

testified about Todd's upbringing and

50:47

highlighted that he had lived in Squalor in

50:49

a vermin and fasted home. The

50:52

judge, Justin Stephen Kay, then

50:54

said that Todd's crimes were beyond

50:56

belief and utterly despicable. He

51:00

stated, Murder for

51:02

pleasure. It's hard to think of

51:04

any motives worse than that. He

51:07

said that it was completely unacceptable that a

51:09

young woman, minding her business, could not cross

51:11

through a park without being raped

51:13

and murdered. He

51:16

said to the court, The court

51:18

has a rule, both in terms of

51:20

denouncing the offending in that way, but

51:22

by the sentence imposed on your

51:25

client and any other like-minded individual,

51:27

deterring others from behaving in the same

51:29

manner. The

51:31

judge then addressed Todd, telling him, She

51:35

was vulnerable and in the circumstances

51:37

defenceless. In a most callous and

51:39

cowardly manner, he said upon her,

51:42

The sheer terror which your Eddysea must

51:44

have experienced during those dreadful moments is

51:47

unimaginable. The conduct

51:53

and your intentions of motivation struck

51:56

at the very heart of

51:58

the most basic use of a

52:01

decent civilized society. The

52:03

judge said that Todd's prospects of

52:05

rehabilitation were limited and the

52:07

likelihood of his sexual sadism disorder

52:09

being addressed was poor. He

52:12

then sentenced James Todd to life in prison

52:15

with the minimum term of 35 years

52:17

before he would be eligible for parole.

52:20

Outside of court, your Addis's father

52:23

Jeremy spoke publicly for the

52:25

very first time. I

52:27

am very glad there's a killer off the streets. What

52:30

I'd wish for James Todd and what

52:32

I believe Eurydice would wish is

52:34

that he gets better and realizes what

52:37

he's done. Eurydice herself

52:40

should be remembered as her friends will

52:42

remember her for her wit and her

52:44

courage and for her kindness,

52:46

not for her death. Well

53:11

besties that is it for this episode
