Have you ever had a conversation with someone that went nowhere?
Have you ever tried communicating with someone and you don't feel heard?
It might be because you are trying to be a really good active listener.
I bet you didn't know active listening sucked?
So what should we try instead if we have been taught that the best way to listen is through "active listening"?
Why not try Passive Listening?
Passive listening is this crazy idea that maybe you don't need to add to the conversation other than just be there to listen and provide support to the person who is trying to communicate with you.
You don't need to have all the answers. You don't always have to respond with the perfect answer. Sometimes the way to improve or build on a relationship is to just be there and listen with no intentions or opinions other than to just be open and listen.
This can also help improve your communication with staff and at work, by allowing people to feel validated and heard. This simple idea can do wonders for your overall communication skills.
