1:27

Texas is a small and

1:30

special town, rich with history.

1:33

Before the massacre at Rob

1:35

Elementary, it was mostly known for

1:37

playing a huge role in the

1:39

Mexican-American Civil Rights Movement, and

1:42

the generations of families that have lived there

1:44

over the years have been proud to call

1:46

it home. But in a

1:48

place like Yuvoldy, no one

1:50

ever expected for tragedy to strike so

1:53

close to home. And

1:55

With the rise of mass shootings here

1:57

in America, there was a collective thought.

2:00

Like that would never happen here. Not

2:02

in a close knit community like you.

2:04

Low The. But. Unbeknownst to

2:07

everyone in this small Texas

2:09

town, An eighteen year old.

2:11

Within their communities have been

2:13

gearing up for something horrific.

2:16

And on May twenty fourth, Twenty

2:18

twenty two, that plan was set

2:20

in motion. Starting with

2:22

the attack against his grandmother

2:24

after shooting her in the

2:26

face. The. Shooter with then

2:28

steal her car. And make his

2:30

way over to Rob Elementary. And

2:32

that's where we left the house in Part One.

2:35

That. Morning While hundreds of students

2:38

sat in their classrooms. no one

2:40

had any idea that evil was

2:42

lurking near by. was in a

2:45

are Is team. He

2:47

would rain terror on the teachers

2:49

and students and side room one

2:51

eleven and one twelve. And

2:53

she would remain in those classrooms

2:56

amongst his murder victims for seventy

2:58

seven minutes. While nearly

3:00

four hundred police officers waited

3:03

outside. During that time,

3:05

the gunmen would play in the victim's

3:07

blood. He would also watch

3:09

T V and play music though

3:11

some of the survivors were bleeding

3:13

out from there gunshot. Wounds.

3:16

At the end of that day

3:18

nineteen students and to teachers. Would

3:20

lose their lives in one of the

3:23

worst school shootings. Our nation has

3:25

ever seized. So this is

3:27

the you've old a school shooting part

3:29

to. i'm courtney brow and

3:32

and i'm calling brown and you're

3:34

listening to murder and america It's

4:44

the morning of May 24, 2022, and the citizens of Yuvaldi wake up, get

4:46

dressed and

4:51

drive into work, just like they did every day.

4:54

At the Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home, Cody

4:56

Briseno and Gilbert Lemoniez walk through the doors

4:58

and get to work preparing for the funerals

5:01

they had that week. It was

5:03

a pretty normal day, nothing out of the

5:05

ordinary, but at around 11.27am, their quiet

5:09

office is interrupted by the sound of

5:11

a loud crash. No

5:15

one knows exactly what's happening, but

5:17

when they look out of the window, there's

5:19

a large cloud of dust bellowing up

5:22

in the distance, and it

5:24

soon becomes clear that a car had crashed

5:26

into the drainage ditch across the

5:28

street. So they

5:30

immediately dial 911 and from

5:33

there, they make their way outside

5:35

to help the driver. Video

5:37

footage from the funeral home shows Cody

5:39

and Gilbert run out of the building

5:41

towards the crashed truck, and

5:44

as they approach, a

5:46

young man wearing all black climbs out

5:48

of the passenger side window, so they

5:50

yell out, Sir, are you

5:52

okay? But then suddenly,

5:55

the men's concern for the driver

5:57

turns into pure fear because after

6:00

At that moment, the young

6:02

man reaches into the trip and

6:04

pulls out an AR-15. Cody

6:07

and Gilbert have less than a second to

6:09

react. The driver of the

6:11

truck looks them dead in the eyes and

6:14

with no emotion aims his

6:16

rifle directly at them. From

6:19

here, the men start to run as

6:21

gunshots blast in their direction. Cody

6:25

was running so frantically. He

6:28

even trips and falls right there in the

6:30

street. The shooter fires

6:32

at least eight shots in their direction,

6:35

but every single one of them misses. Luckily,

6:38

they would make it back

6:40

to the funeral home unscathed. But

6:42

as they watched from a distance, they

6:45

see the young man walk towards

6:47

Rob Elementary. And in this day

6:49

and age, they know exactly

6:51

what's about to happen. This

6:54

man is about to shoot up in

6:56

elementary school. So Gilbert

6:58

immediately calls 911. He

7:01

would later say, I'm screaming at

7:03

them, please send cops out here real quick. And

7:05

I'm watching him and he walks up the little

7:07

trail, the drainage ditch area, and I see him

7:09

throw a duffel bag over the fence. And then

7:11

I see him jump the fence. And I'm telling

7:13

them, he's walking towards the school. He's on campus

7:15

grounds now. I'm telling them this and screaming for

7:17

them to hurry, please. He's

7:19

the biggest school guy, man. He

7:21

just jumped over the fence. He's running

7:23

towards the school. He's wearing black.

7:27

He's making a case of hurt. Yes,

7:29

sir. We have this way and it's heading

7:31

out that way. But before going into the school,

7:34

the shooter aims the gun at the funeral

7:36

home one last time, almost

7:38

warning them not to intervene. And

7:41

with that, he continues

7:43

towards Rob Elementary. That

7:45

day at Rob Elementary was supposed to be

7:47

a fun day for the students. It

7:50

was the second to last day before summer break. So

7:53

the end of the year celebrations were well underway.

7:55

Earlier that week, the students went on a field trip

7:58

to the zoo. And on this day, the

8:00

school had a themed dress code called

8:02

Footloose and Fancy where the students and

8:05

teachers were supposed to wear colorful and

8:07

unique clothing. That morning the

8:09

school also held an awards ceremony to

8:11

honor the students hard work that year.

8:13

The video we are about to play

8:15

for you were the awards handed down to

8:18

the 4th graders in Ms. Irma Garcia and

8:20

Ms. Ava Morales' class. They were

8:22

the teachers of room 112. Sadly,

8:25

within just a few hours both

8:27

teachers would lose their lives as

8:29

well as most of the students whose names they are

8:31

about to call out. In

9:20

the video, Irma and Ava students proudly

9:22

walk up to the podium and accept

9:25

their awards. Like most

9:27

little kids, they are smiling from ear

9:29

to ear. Some even waved

9:31

to their loved ones who were sitting in

9:33

the crowd. It's a special moment

9:35

for the kids and the parents

9:38

who are watching their children smile

9:40

as they accept their awards. Many

9:43

of the parents even took off work so

9:46

they could celebrate their child's accomplishments.

9:49

However, as they snapped their pictures

9:52

and waved to their babies on stage,

9:55

None of them had any idea that this would

9:57

be the very last time they would ever see

9:59

them. The their children alive.

10:02

After. The awards ceremony and did some

10:04

parents took their children home. But.

10:06

Many of them would stay behind. You.

10:08

See, there were still several more hours left diverse

10:10

school day and a lot of a kids wanted

10:13

to make sure they got as much time with

10:15

their friends before the school year ended. Plus.

10:17

The rest of the day was supposed to be fun. Most.

10:20

Of the teachers were just going to turn on a movie.

10:22

So. From there, the children said goodbye

10:25

to their parents and pile back into

10:27

their classrooms for the very last time.

10:30

Over. The next hour the teachers

10:32

and students of Rob Elementary or

10:34

Sitting. In their classrooms most

10:37

are watching movies, but

10:39

shortly before Eleven thirty

10:41

am. The. School Speech

10:43

Specialist Amy Marine. Watched.

10:46

As a truck crashed into the

10:48

drainage ditch across the street. And.

10:51

Likes the employees at the funeral

10:53

home. She quickly dialed Nine

10:55

One One. The. That accounting And

10:57

or once. They

10:59

were disconnected or right behind. Me

11:02

I razzi ran as a as

11:04

a reddit gets. To

11:09

pick up truck. In a later

11:12

interview, Amy admitted that the only

11:14

thing she getting.at that moment. With

11:16

that the driver had a medical

11:18

emergency wall behind the wheel. Sushi.

11:21

Quickly runs out of the school to see

11:23

what's going on. Amy also

11:25

watches the funeral home employees run

11:27

to help the driver. And

11:30

then seconds later she sees them

11:32

running away. Running

11:35

away, From.

11:40

Here. Dispatch. Alerts the

11:42

authorities about the crash. In

11:45

the sack to the driver has it's own.

11:48

Set of results have only

11:51

one of her classes it

11:53

polarizing else has recovered at.

11:57

My shots fired. Now.

12:00

The marine is still on the phone with Nine

12:02

One One as she quickly walks back into the

12:04

school and she tells the dispatch that the man

12:06

is fired several shots and is making his way

12:08

towards the campus. Plus a nice how

12:11

many shots were fired. Okay,

12:15

Them he's on campus. So

12:17

it's. Unfortunately,

12:20

As Amy makes her way back inside,

12:22

Rob Elementary stored hundred doesn't lock and

12:24

moments later the gunman would enter the

12:26

school through this unlocked door. But.

12:29

It's important to note that Amy wasn't responsible

12:31

for this on locked door the door should

12:33

have immediately locked once a closed but it

12:35

didn't so as the school's fault. It's also

12:38

important to note that the shooter would have

12:40

like we made his way inside even if

12:42

the door had been lot. According

12:44

to official reports, the exterior doors on the

12:47

east and south sides of the building were

12:49

also unlocked, such that even if the west

12:51

door had been locked, the attacker still would

12:53

have had the ability to enter the building,

12:55

but his progress, like me, would have been

12:58

slowed. A back outside the young

13:00

man hop the five foot fence surrounding

13:02

the elementary school and now he was

13:04

officially on campus! But. He's taking his

13:06

time. He's. Not running. He

13:08

doesn't appear to be anxious. He's. Just

13:11

calmly walking around with is a are

13:13

fifteen. Once. He reaches the parking

13:15

lot of the school, even hangs out in between

13:17

two vehicles for a moment. Now.

13:19

Often the distances the schools pavilion

13:21

where students are outside for p

13:23

class. And while the shooter standing

13:25

in front of Rob Elementary he aims has

13:27

done to Pavilion and fires off three to

13:30

four sauce luckily they don't hit new one.

13:32

But. The pea coats you that silver

13:34

is outside with the third grade class

13:36

does. Noticed the gunshots and it's here

13:38

where she notified the schools office about

13:41

an active shooter saying. Tote. Silver

13:43

to office. Somebody jumped over the fence and

13:45

he's shooting. Coach. Silver thought that her

13:47

announcement to the school would initiate a lockdown.

13:50

However, was not reported right away.

13:52

And. The gunman would continue making

13:54

his way towards Rob Elementary. Surveillance

13:57

cameras from around the school.

14:00

The sound of gunfire. in

14:02

many of the teachers and students and

14:04

surveyed. Were confused as to what

14:06

was going on. One.

14:13

Of these teachers is Nicole Odd.

14:17

She is sitting in or fourth grade

14:19

classroom. When. She hears the sound

14:21

of what she thinks his mettle hitting

14:23

the wall. But. She can tell

14:25

that the sound is coming from outside

14:27

so she looks out the window. And

14:30

it's here where she sees me on

14:32

within a are fifteen. Nicole

14:34

quickly tells her students to get. Under

14:37

their desks. Which. Is Active

14:39

shooter protocol. And as soon

14:41

as they do, The. Window to

14:44

her classroom shatters. The

14:46

gunmen starts walking down the

14:48

sidewalk, shooting at all the

14:50

windows he passes and inside

14:53

the classrooms. the children are

14:55

terrified as glass shatters all

14:57

around. Then. Teacher.

14:59

Nicole Ogborn crawls over to

15:02

her. students. And she does her

15:04

best to comfort them. The. She's

15:06

also fully aware that she's

15:08

experiencing every teacher's worst nightmare.

15:11

And. All she can do is tell

15:14

her students to be quiet. Over

15:16

the next few moments. The.

15:18

Only sounds from inside or

15:20

students whispering. Some or

15:23

comforting their classmates. Others

15:25

are praying for God's protection.

15:29

Now. Several minutes earlier, officers of the

15:31

You've All The Police Department were sitting

15:33

in their offices when several people ran

15:35

through yelling that there was a gunman

15:37

near Rob Elementary. And many of

15:39

the first responders had family associated with

15:41

the school. In fact, you've all the

15:43

Police Sergeant Eduardo Tamales said just been

15:46

at the school an hour earlier for

15:48

his sons award ceremony. So he and

15:50

Lieutenant Marianna Pargas quickly made their way

15:52

over to the school where they met

15:54

another officer named Lieutenant Javier Martinez. Martinez.

15:57

Would later and met that he didn't really know what was.

16:00

Going on saying I had no idea what

16:02

I was walking into. Where. She thought

16:04

we were going to an accident scene. I thought it

16:06

was an accident and the shooting at each other. Road.

16:08

Rage. So. At first

16:11

there was a lot of confusion

16:13

on what exactly was happening. Some

16:15

of the officers thought it was a

16:17

road rage incident. In that the

16:20

shooter ran towards the school to

16:22

get away from law enforcement. he

16:24

claimed they didn't realize it was

16:26

an active shooter scenario. Would. Either

16:28

way, there's a gunmen near in

16:31

elementary school. So. Martinez

16:33

pops open his trunk, puts

16:35

on is bulletproof vest, And.

16:37

Grabs his rifle, Moments.

16:40

Later. Sergeant. Daniel

16:42

Coronado also arrived. In

16:44

it's around this time when they

16:47

hear the sound of gunfire near

16:49

campus. They also saw the group

16:51

of children by the pavilion running

16:53

away. So. Initially they thought

16:55

the gunmen was over there. One.

16:58

Officer even saw a man dressed in

17:00

all black running in the direction of

17:02

the children. So. From here

17:04

are the officer lifts his rifle towards

17:06

the man and he or sergeant core

17:08

an auto as he had permission to

17:10

sue. But. According to the

17:13

committee, Sergeant Core and auto hesitated.

17:15

She didn't want any shots fired

17:17

while the children are present. seeding

17:19

quote he considered the risk of

17:22

shooting a child. And he

17:24

quickly recalled his training that the

17:26

officers are responsible for every round

17:28

that goes down range. In

17:30

cook. And. Luckily they

17:32

choose not to shoot at the man

17:35

dressed in all black because that man

17:37

was not the shooter. In

17:39

fact his name was Abraham

17:41

Gonzalez. And he was a

17:43

P E coach at Rob Elementary. According

17:46

to official documents, Abraham had been

17:48

walking to his car after lunch

17:50

when he heard the announcement of

17:52

an active shooter. On the Schools

17:54

Radio. So. He immediately ran over

17:56

to the children to bring them inside

17:59

for the look. Now.

18:01

After this confusion, the employees at

18:03

the funeral home signal to the

18:05

police officers that the gunmen is

18:08

right outside of Rob Elementary. So.

18:10

From Here. The. Responding officers

18:12

make their way over to the school

18:15

where they meet you. Ball D C

18:17

I. S T Police Chief. Pete.

18:19

A. Beach. She's had

18:21

been a you've all the high school

18:23

when he heard a report of shots

18:26

fired over radio. Now. Keep

18:28

in mind pete area! Dando was the

18:30

Chief of Police for the school district.

18:33

In. According to active shooter protocol, he

18:35

was supposed to be the man

18:37

in charge that day. Since.

18:39

He immediately makes his way over

18:41

to Rob Elementary with his radios.

18:44

Which. Is what is used. To communicate

18:46

with the first responders. The

18:49

shortly after he exits his vehicle.

18:52

Pete. Area Dando starts fumbling with

18:54

his radio. And

18:56

he quickly gets frustrated with them.

18:59

According to the committee, the

19:01

radios quote bothered him. So

19:03

he dropped them by the schools things.

19:06

And quo. No. This is

19:08

strange because he is the

19:10

man in charge in his

19:12

radio is crucial for communication.

19:15

But he would later say that he dropped

19:17

his radio is because. He knew Sergeant

19:19

Core an Auto would. Have his

19:21

radios with him. Doesn't. Make

19:23

a ton of sense, but that was his

19:25

reasoning. But. As of

19:27

this moment, we have several police officers

19:30

on seen including the Chief of police

19:32

and they arrive on campuses minutes into

19:34

the shooting. However, their presence

19:36

one stop the gunman. Not.

19:38

Before the shooting started, the principle of

19:40

Rob Elementary Mandy Gutierrez was sitting in

19:42

her office having just wrapped up the

19:44

end of the year ceremony when she

19:47

heard over the radio that an active

19:49

shooter was heading towards campus. So

19:51

she immediately tried to send an alert

19:53

over the online emergency alert system known

19:55

as Raptor Bravo Mentor. He had been

19:58

using the software since October two. Thousand

20:00

And Twenty One. And. It allowed all

20:02

staff members to initiate a lockdown. Or

20:05

because the school had a bad why

20:07

fi signal the alert one kid sent

20:09

all right away. So instead she used

20:11

the schools intercom system to initiate a

20:13

lockdown and from there, the teachers scramble

20:15

to get their kids to safety and

20:18

start their lockdown procedures. After this principle,

20:20

Mandy Gutierrez called Cheaper and Ondo on

20:22

a cellphone and on that call he

20:24

told her Shut Down. Many shut it

20:26

down. Next Monday

20:29

Gutierrez. Radio The schools

20:31

had custodian Jaime Price. To.

20:34

Make sure all of the doors to the

20:36

building are locked. And fortunately, Jaime

20:38

was already one step ahead of her.

20:41

He had heard Code Sylvia's original

20:43

report of an active shooter. In

20:46

immediately when around securing the

20:48

doors. With. As he did this.

20:51

He did hear the gunshots coming

20:53

closer so he steps into the

20:55

cafeteria. Where. He stayed for the

20:57

remainder of the shooting. Put. In

21:00

everyone's minds, the doors. Were

21:02

secured. Now. During these

21:04

next few moments, teachers were

21:06

scrambling, trying to. Get their

21:08

students to safety. And

21:10

room one else for Miss Lane Demean

21:13

had been getting her class ready for

21:15

recess. When she heard gunfire. Many

21:18

of her students were out in the

21:20

hallway so she quickly rush them back

21:22

into the classroom. shut the door, turned

21:25

her light sauce in, assured her students

21:27

to get under their desks. And.

21:30

From they are They all sat in

21:32

silence. Fully. Aware that

21:34

danger was just outside of their

21:36

school. In room One

21:38

oh Nine, Miss Elsa Via had lined up

21:40

or students of the door for eleven thirty

21:43

am recess. but as she poked her head

21:45

out of the classroom, she heard of female

21:47

yellow didn't your rooms So she slammed her

21:49

classroom doors hard as she could to make

21:52

sure the lock last and from here. She

21:54

also followed active shooter protocol which was turning

21:56

off the lights and getting her students away

21:58

from the window. In. Room

22:00

One: Oh wait. Ten year old

22:03

Gemma Lopez and her classmates. I've

22:05

been watching the jungle cruise when

22:07

there was allowed popping sound and

22:09

the distance. Gemma. Realize the

22:12

severity of the situation when she looked

22:14

outside of her window. And. Saw

22:17

police officers. In an

22:19

interview for The New York Times, she admitted

22:21

that the other students believed. It was a

22:23

prank. But. She quickly hushed them.

22:26

As. Their teacher turned off the lights.

22:28

She. Said quote. Everyone was

22:30

scared and everything I told them to

22:33

be quiet. I heard a lot

22:35

more of the gunshots. And. Then I

22:37

was crying a little bit. And my

22:39

best friend Sophie was also crying right next

22:41

to me. Unquote, Inside.

22:44

The Cafeteria. Twenty nine year old

22:46

Jasmine career a food services employ

22:48

had started serving the second graders

22:50

once when the general rushed and

22:52

screaming. Jasmine. Run, run, hide,

22:54

hurry hurry. When she asks was going

22:56

on he responded. For. Shooting They're

22:58

shooting. There's gunshots. Do the lockdown.

23:01

The lights immediately damned and Jasmine

23:03

ran to the cafeterias back door.

23:05

unlocked it. The. Students were then instructed

23:07

to lie down on the ground and remain

23:09

quiet. Although. Most of the

23:11

children can stay quiet and were hysterically

23:13

cry on knowing what was going on.

23:16

Jasmine. Thoughts immediately when two or ten

23:18

year old son and see it was a

23:20

fourth grader in room one of three. And

23:23

in that moment for mothers instincts kicked him and

23:25

she even tried to run out of a cafeteria

23:27

to locate him. but she was quickly stop by

23:29

a group of teachers who told her. You.

23:31

Have to wait. You have to relax. You can get

23:33

us all killed. Over the next few

23:36

moments, more students were ushered into the cafeteria

23:38

for the lockdown. Now because

23:40

the emergency alert didn't come in

23:42

time, everyone and Rob Elementary only

23:44

had about a minute. One single

23:47

minute to prepare. And

23:49

soon enough, the entire school when

23:51

from complete chaos to complete silence.

23:54

It's. Now eleven thirty two am.

23:57

Just. Four minutes and. To the gunman

23:59

Christ. Car across the street.

24:02

On the outside of Rob Elementary,

24:04

surveillance footage shows the gunmen

24:06

approach the schools. West entrance.

24:09

The. Entrance that was unlocked. And.

24:12

At Eleven thirty three am. Footage.

24:14

From inside the school shows, the

24:17

gunmen easily open the doors in

24:19

walk inside with his gun in

24:21

hand. The. Shooter then walks

24:24

forward several feet. Into. Was

24:26

right. He comes across a long

24:28

hallway. The fourth grade hallway.

24:31

Video shows him pause for a

24:33

second. And then he decides

24:35

to turn right. Directly. Towards

24:38

the fourth grade classrooms. As

24:40

he walks down the hall to drop

24:42

the gun to his side. As.

24:45

He casually six his his hair. Now.

24:48

In the surveillance footage as

24:50

the shooter approaches the fourth

24:52

grade classrooms. You see a

24:54

little boy in the left hand corner

24:56

of the camera. He had just finished

24:59

using the restroom. And. Was about to

25:01

walk back to. His fourth grade class.

25:03

But. As he went to turn the corner. He

25:06

suddenly stops in his tracks. Because.

25:09

Right there. right? In front

25:11

of his class was a young man with

25:13

in a are fifteen. In

25:15

the video you see the boy stare at the

25:17

con men for. A few seconds. And.

25:20

As soon as he notices the gun, He

25:23

takes off running back towards the

25:25

restrooms. Luckily. The.

25:28

Little boy finished using the restroom

25:30

at the perfect time. If.

25:32

He would have come out seconds earlier.

25:35

He would have been face to face with

25:37

the shooter and likely would have been his

25:39

first victim. But. That's Not how

25:41

this story would play out. Now.

25:44

Minutes earlier Inside Room One

25:46

Eleven. Fourth grade teacher Mister

25:49

Arnie Re as had been playing

25:51

the movie The Addams Family for.

25:53

His eleven students. Would.

25:55

Then suddenly along with the rest of

25:58

the school. Penis cry. Read

26:00

the gunshot. Many. Other

26:02

students jumped up and asked what

26:04

was a. Mystery.

26:07

As had heard the sound before, But.

26:09

Never in his wildest dreams did

26:11

he expect what would happen next.

26:14

Know. Something important to note is

26:16

that inside his classroom was a

26:18

door that connected to the classroom

26:21

next to his. Which. Was

26:23

room one twelve? And. Inside

26:25

that classroom were eighteen

26:28

students into teachers. Named

26:30

Miss A them Rls and

26:32

Miss Irma Garcia. Before.

26:35

The shots rang out. Room One

26:37

twelve was watching the Lilo and Stitch

26:39

movie. Many. Of the students

26:41

had even taking their shoes off so that

26:43

they would be comfortable. But. Now they

26:46

were all huddled up under their

26:48

desks. Fighting. From a gunman

26:50

who is approaching their classroom. In

26:53

one of the scariest. Parts about school

26:55

shootings. Is. That you never

26:57

know which classrooms the gunmen will

27:00

target. With. As he walks down

27:02

the hall, she suddenly stops in front

27:04

of room one Eleven and one twelve.

27:07

On the door of the classrooms are

27:09

these small little window. And.

27:12

As the gunman walks through the whole. He

27:15

peaks and a room one twelve. And

27:17

fires several shots through the small

27:19

window. With the door

27:22

is still locked so from here

27:24

he. Turns to Room One Eleven.

27:27

Unfortunately the door knob to mysterious classroom

27:29

had been broken for a while making

27:31

to where it from lot properly. He

27:34

had requested to get it fixed multiple times,

27:36

but for whatever reason there was never done.

27:39

Now. The principle of the School Mandy

27:41

Gutierrez would later claim that Is Door

27:43

was check the day before the shooting,

27:45

but there's some speculation as to whether

27:47

or not that's true. You're. It

27:49

wasn't working on the day of the shooting.

27:52

And. Sadly, because that door was

27:54

improperly secured, the students and side

27:56

room one one one are easy

27:58

targets. After hearing the

28:01

shots rang out in the hallway. Mystery

28:03

as quickly recalls his active

28:05

shooter. Training. And. He instructs

28:07

his students to get under the desks.

28:10

In a nice types of scenarios, you want the

28:12

kids to be as far away from the door.

28:15

As possible. You. Also want to

28:17

make sure they're out of the gunman's line

28:19

of vision so if he looked through the

28:21

window. He wouldn't be able to see

28:23

anyone. So. All eleven students

28:25

run to the right hand corner. Of

28:28

the room near the whiteboard. And

28:30

they all huddle under a desk. From

28:33

their. Mystery. As tells

28:35

the kids to act like they are

28:38

sleeping. He would later say quote.

28:40

I wanted them to close their eyes.

28:42

I didn't want them to see anything.

28:45

But. Once the kids are secure. Mystery.

28:48

As sees a dark shadow approaches

28:50

classroom door. And. Because the

28:52

doors lock was broke in. The.

28:55

Gunman opened sex and steps

28:57

inside room One Eleven. With

28:59

these. At that moment,

29:02

Mister. Re as is standing there

29:04

cease to cease with the shooter. And

29:07

all he can see. Is is

29:09

dark eyes. To. Students are

29:11

still huddled in the corner behind him.

29:14

And the next thing he knows. The.

29:16

Gunman yells out. Look.

29:18

What we have here. Before. Raising

29:21

his rifle in his direction. And.

29:23

Pulling the trigger, Missile

29:26

away as. Quickly dropped to the ground.

29:29

Ceiling. A deep steam and his

29:31

left forearm. The bullet had torn

29:33

off pieces of his flesh and bone.

29:36

But. What would happen next was

29:38

far more horrific. After

29:40

shooting the teacher, the gunmen

29:42

den approaches the eleven children.

29:45

Who were huddled in the corner. And.

29:47

Over the next few moments, the

29:50

sound of gunfire echoes throughout the

29:52

school. Within. Seconds.

29:55

All. Eleven students in room

29:57

One eleven or killed instantly.

30:00

The. Mystery as who is

30:02

still lying on the ground plane? Dad.

30:04

Said that he didn't even hear

30:06

one single cry. Scream or

30:09

whimper. That's how quickly

30:11

they were wiped out. Here

30:13

is the audio from those first

30:16

few moments. Keep in

30:18

mind the audio is edited. So all

30:20

you can year is the gunshots. All.

30:39

Outside the responding police officers are still

30:41

trying to figure out where the shooters

30:43

located and soon enough they learn of

30:45

the shots are coming from inside Rob

30:47

Elementary. There's. The body cam footage

30:49

of Sergeant Daniel Coronado and you can

30:52

hear the exact moment he realizes the

30:54

shooters and sign. A

30:59

bill is on. The. Sergeant

31:13

Corn Auto said that after hearing the gunfire

31:15

and side of the school, his heart sank.

31:18

This was the worst case scenario. That

31:21

inside the classrooms after the

31:23

shooter murdered all a. Students

31:26

and Side Room One eleven. He

31:29

goes into the classroom next door. Like.

31:31

We mentioned inside Room One Eleven

31:33

there was a door that connected

31:35

to Room One. Tool Found this

31:38

Morel As and Miss Garcia. Had

31:40

locked the front door to their

31:42

classroom. That they hadn't lock

31:44

the door that connected to Mister Re

31:46

as classroom. Him because his

31:48

front door was unlocked. This.

31:51

Allowed the gunman access to

31:53

both classrooms. Inside Room

31:55

One Twelve, two teachers and

31:58

eighteen students are hiding. In

32:01

Just Like and Mister Raise his Class.

32:03

Most. To the students are in the back

32:05

left hand corner of the room. And

32:08

in front of the kids guarding them

32:10

from the gunmen. Are there

32:12

to teachers? Other students

32:14

are hidden and other spots. Around

32:16

the room, Some kids are

32:18

under the desks. Others.

32:21

Are in the front of the room near the

32:23

backpacks. Good. All are terrified

32:25

after screen the gunshots next

32:27

door. Over the

32:29

next few seconds. Everyone

32:31

inside of Room One Twelve holds.

32:34

They're brats. Trying to

32:36

stay as quiet as they possibly. Can

32:38

but soon enough the

32:40

door. Handle connecting to Room

32:42

One Eleven begins to turn

32:45

in before they know it.

32:47

The gunman is standing right in front of

32:49

them. He then yells

32:52

out your all gonna die. In

32:55

according to survivors. The

32:57

gunman then makes his way towards

32:59

the teachers and students and the

33:01

corner of the room. They all

33:03

back away and fear as he

33:05

inches closer. He then

33:07

looks Irma Garcia and D eye.

33:10

And says goodnight before

33:12

unloading his rifle on

33:14

every. Once in that corner of

33:17

the room, here is the audio

33:19

from the whole way. in

33:57

less than three minutes the gunmen had

34:00

fired over 100 shots into

34:02

the two classrooms. When

34:05

he was finished shooting, Ms. Irma

34:07

Garcia immediately fell to the ground

34:09

dead, and so did the

34:11

young children she was holding in her arms.

34:14

Both teachers tried their best to shield

34:16

their students from the gunfire, but

34:19

several of them would immediately succumb

34:21

to their injuries. However,

34:23

not everyone in that corner died

34:25

right away. In the

34:27

very back of the group, there were

34:30

four children who had been shot but

34:32

were still alive, and

34:35

their teacher, Ms. Eva Morelez, was

34:37

also still alive. But

34:40

after these gunshots rang out, 10 other

34:43

students were still hiding around the

34:45

classroom, doing everything they could

34:47

to keep quiet so the

34:49

gunman wouldn't see them. Now

34:51

a man named Charlie Men would do a

34:54

documentary called 77 Minutes,

34:57

where he interviewed some of the surviving

34:59

children of Room 112. And

35:02

according to their accounts, these

35:04

first few minutes were absolute chaos.

35:07

A student named Samuel Salinas said,

35:09

quote, I was hiding under

35:11

my desk. I was half outside

35:14

of the desk and half inside of the

35:16

desk. And I saw a bunch

35:18

of my classmates dead and

35:20

my friends too. Now

35:23

Samuel had been shot in his right leg.

35:26

The pain was unbearable, but

35:28

he couldn't scream or cry. He

35:31

had to remain as quiet as he possibly

35:33

could. Another student

35:35

named Jaden Canizales said, quote,

35:38

I was hiding under the table and

35:40

there was a table curtain so the shooter

35:42

couldn't see me. The table curtain

35:44

was black, end quote. As

35:47

Jaden was hidden behind the curtain, he

35:50

heard the shooter come into the room. He

35:53

would later say, quote, the shooter

35:55

was behind me. He crouched

35:57

down when he was at the table and

35:59

started shooting. and because he was hidden

36:01

under that curtain, Jaden

36:03

luckily didn't get shot. But

36:06

that wasn't the case for many

36:08

of his other classmates. 11-year-old

36:10

Maya Serio had been

36:12

shot in the upper left shoulder. Another

36:15

student, A.J. Martinez, had

36:18

been shot in his right leg. He said

36:20

that after the gunman came into their

36:22

class, quote, I just saw

36:24

him keep shooting people, he

36:27

would stop. And

36:30

then he would keep going, end

36:32

quote. After shooting into room

36:34

112, the gunman would then go

36:36

back into room 111. Inside,

36:38

Mr. Reyes was still on the ground, pretending to be dead,

36:42

and behind him were the bodies of his 11 students.

36:45

Like we mentioned, he didn't hear one single cry

36:47

or moan, so he knew they were all

36:49

likely dead. But it's at this point,

36:51

at 11.36 a.m., just

36:53

three minutes into the shooting, when the police finally

36:56

come into the school. Chief

36:58

Arendondo, Officer Adrian Gonzalez, Officer Page,

37:00

and Sergeant Coronado enter the building

37:02

through the south entrance. Then, on

37:04

the west entrance, several

37:07

more officers enter the school, including

37:09

Lieutenant Martin, Sergeant Canales, Lieutenant

37:12

Javier Martinez, and Officer Luis

37:14

Landry. Now, in the

37:16

security footage from inside the school, the

37:18

officers immediately run in and disperse down

37:20

the hallway. Some of them are even

37:22

standing directly in front of room 111 and 112. And

37:26

while they're standing there, they notice it's

37:28

eerily quiet inside. There's no screaming,

37:30

no crying. They also notice smoke

37:32

in the hallway, debris all over the floor, bullet

37:34

holes through the walls, and bullet casings all

37:37

over the ground. And it's at this point, when

37:40

Sergeant Canales peers through one of the doors to see

37:42

if he can get an eye on the gunman. However,

37:44

when he does, the classroom is pitch black.

37:48

Now, the officers are standing in the hallway for about

37:50

a minute, and then right before 11.37 a.m., the

37:53

gunman fires off several more shots. Inside

37:56

room 111, Mr. Reyes said

37:58

that he then heard a student in room 11. 1-12, cry

38:01

out, officers come in, we are in here.

38:04

In just for a moment, I want you

38:06

to imagine the relief they felt when they

38:08

heard the police on the other side of

38:10

that wall. They just experienced

38:12

the most traumatic thing anyone should

38:14

ever have to go through, but

38:17

at least it was almost over. The

38:19

police were here to help, or

38:22

so they thought. Sadly, help

38:24

was not on the way. In

38:27

fact, after the gunshots rang out and

38:29

the little girl screamed, we are in

38:31

here, the gunman walked over

38:33

and killed her. Meanwhile,

38:35

the police took off running down

38:37

the hallway and took cover.

38:40

Now during the gunfire, Sergeant Canales

38:42

and Lieutenant Martinez had been grazed

38:45

by debris from the bullets blasting

38:47

through the door. Here

38:49

is the body cam footage from

38:51

Officer Eduardo Canales. Nice shot.

38:55

We are

38:58

shooting a bit of the

39:00

same body on the way to the ground now getting

39:02

the ambulance. The ambulance

39:04

was afraid of just a student. You

39:06

guys on the ground right now? Yes sir.

39:09

Okay. One step, one

39:11

step, one step. Can you guys

39:13

break the board? Yes sir. Do

39:15

you want it up? No, two

39:17

three guys right now. No,

39:21

no, no, no,

39:23

no. Can you believe me? Am

39:47

I bleeding? Am I

39:49

bleeding? Am I bleeding? My

39:51

wife's bathroom. That's

40:00

my wife's classroom." As

40:03

it turns out, his wife was Ms.

40:05

Ava Morelez inside of room 112. Now

40:09

Ava had been shot, but she was

40:11

still alive. However, there

40:13

was still some confusion as to whether

40:15

or not she and her students were

40:17

actually in the class. Now

40:20

something important to know about mass

40:22

shootings is that the first

40:24

few moments officers get on scene are

40:26

the most crucial. That's

40:28

when it's the best time to take

40:30

the gunman down and rescue victims. When

40:33

you wait around, there's this build up.

40:36

The gunman gets comfortable, and

40:38

as time passes he's more aware of

40:41

his surroundings. So these

40:43

first few moments are when the Uvaldi

40:45

police officer should have gone in and

40:47

taken him down. However, after

40:49

those shots are fired through the door,

40:52

they retreat back and take cover, and

40:55

no one would even attempt to go back into

40:57

the room for another 70 minutes. Here

41:01

is footage from Officer Canales' body

41:03

cam after those shots rang

41:05

out. He's in the classroom. John,

41:09

you alright? You okay? Yeah.

41:12

You okay? He's in the class. He's in the

41:14

class. What? Everybody, if

41:17

I got shots fired, we're

41:19

going to be in the building, the

41:21

west side. We

41:23

got to get in there. We got to get

41:26

in there. We got to get in there. We got to get in there.

41:28

We got to get in there. Back

41:31

inside room 111, Mr. Reyes

41:34

is still playing dead on the floor while

41:37

the gunman walks all around him. The

41:40

shooter would end up spending most of the 77 minutes in

41:42

room 111. So

41:45

as you can imagine, it was

41:47

a horrifying experience. At

41:51

one point, Mr. Reyes heard him close

41:53

the blinds to his classroom and

41:56

then stand up on the desk behind him.

41:58

He may have even seen the. He to remove

42:00

a little bit. Because. After

42:02

this the gunman poor's. A

42:05

cup of water on way as his

42:07

back see like we wanted to see

42:09

if the waters with cause him to

42:11

move around. But. It didn't. Raise.

42:14

Continue to be a still as he

42:17

possibly could. From. There. The.

42:19

Shooter hops down from the table,

42:21

scoops up some of raise his

42:23

blood. And. In smears it all

42:25

over the teachers face. But.

42:28

Mr. As keeps doing everything in

42:30

his power to play dead. However,

42:33

the gunman isn't finished just

42:35

yet. Next he grabs

42:37

re as his cell. Phone. Which.

42:40

Had been ringing non stop since the

42:42

shooting started. Any place is it on

42:45

way as as bad it's assume

42:47

that the gunman thought the vibrations of

42:49

the cell phone would elicit a

42:51

reaction a source but it didn't. Mister

42:54

A as would later say. Quote. He

42:57

was going to make sure I was dead

42:59

to. I. Mean, she had nothing

43:01

to lose. And quote. Then.

43:04

As he was lying there. Mister.

43:07

A as heard a loud pop followed

43:09

by a pain and is lower back.

43:12

The shooter had shot him again.

43:15

And. He couldn't even react despite

43:17

the immense pain. And.

43:19

At that moment he thought to himself

43:22

quote. I'm not going to make it.

43:24

I'm. Going to bleed out. And

43:27

quo. Now. And the next room

43:29

over. The survivors of Room One Twelve

43:31

continue. To wait around for police.

43:34

Eleven year old Chloe Torres said the

43:36

she watched ten. People died right in

43:39

front of allies. One. Being

43:41

her best friend Emery. Another.

43:43

Survivor My A surreal. Said

43:46

that as she laid there amongst her. Classmates.

43:49

She saw teeth scattered all over

43:51

the ground. She. Also

43:53

saw someone's ear lying right next

43:56

to her. These little

43:58

children were quite literally. What

44:00

looked like a war zone. In

44:02

all they wanted was to get out of that

44:05

room. Chloe. Said that

44:07

she kept looking at the window of

44:09

her classroom. She. Knew that that

44:11

would be away. For them to escape. But.

44:13

She didn't even entertain the idea.

44:16

Because. She knew the gunmen was watching.

44:19

So instead. She. Continued

44:21

to play dead amongst her

44:24

classmates. Now back outside

44:26

in the hallway, many of the officer

44:28

said that they didn't even realize students

44:30

were in the classroom here. Sergeant and

44:32

Ward Oh Canalis. Other to

44:34

get into this in there has

44:36

to gun I know and love

44:38

diet. And I just

44:40

policy.at the road to said was

44:43

it a little that losses in

44:45

that is really five years screaming

44:47

and yelling and my very delicious

44:49

in it and law fill in

44:51

L and you know he will

44:53

take those kids and be yelling

44:55

screaming. Here's. Another officer,

44:58

Robert Rodriguez. Ensure

45:00

the kids didn't hear him

45:02

shooting anybody or anything like

45:05

that. so. I

45:07

guess that's why we know they're waiting to

45:09

make anteaters for dinner. was going on in.

45:12

This is too quiet. Here's.

45:14

Officer Ventura chopper reducing those

45:16

isn't that. And

45:19

users of us busy. Over.

45:24

Again it was reply and he i know

45:26

you know our. Elementary

45:28

school. you know you have your

45:31

little i fear science class where

45:33

you walk down or pleasure and

45:35

different times and office. he no

45:37

other activities and that was awesome

45:39

and in years so maybe they're

45:41

doing something else you know. He

45:44

not in their classrooms. For

45:48

those those was the six.

45:50

Max is Sergeant Donald Page.

45:52

Met a holiday so quiet as

45:54

after the shots or die either

45:56

clearly hear yourself breathing it in

45:58

here and kids. In here and

46:00

there's. Nothing. I and I

46:03

do remember even ask impedes hey is

46:05

it is building clear? is it just

46:07

made me want to to classrooms and

46:09

he like I said i I do

46:11

not know because I say they hear

46:13

anybody. Now the reason there

46:15

was no screaming or yelling is because

46:18

one most of the people in the

46:20

rooms were dead and to the gunman

46:22

was going back and forth between the

46:24

rooms. So obviously the survivors aren't going

46:27

to be screaming revealing their position. One.

46:29

Of the girls and room one twelve had done

46:32

just that and the gunman came in and solder.

46:34

And an active shooter training which the soon

46:36

said practice in the past. They teach you

46:39

to be as quiet as you possibly can.

46:41

So. They follow the rules rules of

46:44

the police department clearly weren't aware of

46:46

and it's at this point when Sergeant

46:48

Eduardo can always announces that the subject

46:50

is contained in barricaded in the classroom.

46:56

Sensitive. To.

47:00

Believe is off. Barricade is in

47:02

one of the of her one

47:04

of the offices. I'm

47:06

a further still shooting. Now.

47:08

With this announcement, Sergeant and Warner can

47:10

always use the words contained and barricaded

47:13

and I wording is very important. other

47:15

officers that means that the subject is

47:17

in the room by themselves on us

47:19

that word to be the case. Then

47:22

there's no urgency to immediately storm in

47:24

and take down the shooter. Now thing,

47:26

be more tactical and strategic so that

47:28

they're protected. But. Little did they know

47:31

that was not the case at all. There.

47:33

Were dozens of people in those rooms,

47:35

most of whom were already dead and

47:37

some who were die. Seven.

47:40

Minutes ended the shootings a teacher

47:42

from room window to call nine

47:44

One one. Per. Classroom is

47:46

located across. The hall from

47:48

Room One Twelve. So she heard

47:50

everything. In according to her

47:53

nine one one call she says quote.

47:55

There's. An active shooter at Rob Elementary. I

47:57

don't have a window, but I can. The

48:00

gunshots outside of my classroom. There's.

48:02

Been a lock. A whole

48:05

lot. And I got a message

48:07

from somebody that somebody is shown in

48:09

another classrooms. And. quo. Salt

48:11

from here. Police Chief Pete Aerodyne

48:13

Dell is notified about this nine

48:16

one one call. So. He

48:18

knows that someone has been shot

48:20

in one of the classrooms. Et

48:23

cetera, Longer.

48:29

Feared for her to right

48:31

now. Have a for the building

48:33

with man. At Ihop

48:35

asleep. Such

48:39

with. The dispatcher replies quote.

48:42

She's in another classroom. She's.

48:44

And one oh to. Another

48:46

person is. Possibly shot across from

48:49

her. And quo.

48:52

Chief. Era dando Response: We

48:54

have him in a room.

48:59

In her room or kilometer or

49:02

surrounded? They're overrated with these people,

49:04

are you know? Monitor

49:09

what? Remember. My

49:12

pillow talk to do or whatever.

49:15

or one swells. Now.

49:17

After hearing from dispatched as someone had

49:19

been shot in room one Eleven or

49:21

one twelve she's Peter and Ondo for

49:23

whatever reason doesn't really this information to

49:26

anyone and because of that the other

49:28

officers continue to treat the shooter is

49:30

a barricaded subject and again, there's no

49:32

urgency to breach the classrooms. It's also

49:34

around this time when the officers are

49:36

trying to figure out if the classrooms

49:39

were in session. Body cam

49:41

footage shows an officer say. Sees.

49:43

The classes in the right now or somewhere

49:45

else. Moments later he gets a

49:47

response. Or

49:50

surfaces or at all because of

49:52

the as as as nervous. So

49:54

now they got confirmation that the

49:56

classes indeed in session meaning the

49:58

students and teachers weren't. side. Following

50:01

this, body cam footage captures several

50:03

officers discussing the situation at hand.

50:06

One officer asks, are there any kids in there?

50:09

Another response, classes in session. Moments

50:12

later, an officer asks, he's in a

50:14

class right now, to which someone

50:16

else responds, yeah, with kids. So

50:18

even though there's a huge lack of communication, many

50:21

of these officers know that kids

50:23

are inside the classroom with a

50:25

gunman. Back inside of

50:27

the classrooms, the shooter is still in

50:30

room 111 with the 11 murder

50:32

victims and Mr. Reyes, who

50:35

is still playing dead on the floor. And

50:38

it's at this point where the shooter

50:40

turns on the TV in the classroom

50:43

and starts watching the news. It

50:45

seems as if he wanted a front row

50:47

seat to the media coverage of the shooting.

50:49

And he's doing all

50:52

of this while the officers wait outside in

50:54

the hallway. At some

50:56

point, the shooter even starts playing

50:58

music on his phone. It's

51:01

never been revealed what songs he was

51:03

listening to, but survivors would

51:05

later say that it was loud and

51:08

sad music. Another person

51:10

described it as, quote, I

51:12

want people to die music. Now

51:15

while the shooter was in room 111,

51:17

the surviving students in

51:19

room 112 are hearing the shooter in the

51:21

next room, and they are

51:24

terrified. But even in

51:26

these frightening moments, they're still looking out

51:28

for one another. Chloe

51:30

Torres and Maya Serrillo were in room

51:32

112, surrounded by

51:35

their dead friends. Maya,

51:37

who had been shot in the shoulder, even

51:40

had one of her deceased friends lying

51:42

on top of her at one point.

51:45

But while the girls are lying there, Chloe

51:48

whispers over to Maya and

51:50

tells her to scoop up some of her

51:52

classmates blood and smear it

51:55

all over her. That way, if

51:57

the gunman comes back in, he

51:59

will think they are dead. So,

52:02

that's what they do. The

52:04

girls gather up their friend's blood and

52:07

cover themselves with it, something no

52:10

11 year old girls should ever have to

52:12

do. And from there

52:14

they close their eyes and play dead. Luckily,

52:17

their plan works. The

52:19

gunman would come back into their classrooms

52:22

and he didn't notice the girls were alive.

52:25

But the entire time, they just

52:28

kept wondering when the police were coming.

52:31

After all, they heard them outside in the

52:33

hallway. So, why weren't they

52:35

coming to save them? Well, the

52:38

Yvoldi police claimed that they were waiting

52:40

on equipment. And until

52:42

they got that equipment, all they could do

52:44

was wait. Now it's

52:47

around this time as the officers are waiting

52:49

around in the hallway. Video

52:51

footage from inside the school shows

52:53

Officer Ruben Ruiz check his phone.

52:56

And then shortly after, he steps out

52:58

of frame. At that

53:01

very moment, he was getting a call from

53:03

his wife, Eva Moreles.

53:06

On the call, Eva can barely even

53:08

speak. Partly because

53:10

the gunman was in the next room. But

53:13

mostly because she was dying. Some

53:16

of the students inside room 112 said

53:18

that they didn't even realize Eva was

53:21

making a phone call. But they

53:23

did hear her mumbling. And

53:25

in those mumbles, she was

53:27

telling her husband that she was dying. From

53:31

there, Officer Ruiz steps back into

53:33

frame and whispers to the other

53:35

officers, quote, my wife shot.

53:39

Now Officer Ruiz would get a lot of

53:41

criticism. As you probably know

53:43

by now, law enforcement officers wouldn't enter

53:45

the classrooms until over an hour later.

53:49

And many people just couldn't fathom why he wouldn't

53:51

go into the room where he knew his wife

53:53

was dying. Now in his defense,

53:55

he only had a small Glock on him,

53:57

which would have been no match against the

53:59

gunman's rifle. But there were other officers in

54:01

the hallway with rifles. Many people

54:03

questioned why he didn't borrow a rifle and go

54:05

save his wife and her students. Well

54:08

body cam footage did show him pushing

54:10

through the officers saying, she said

54:12

she's shot Johnny, but they quickly hold

54:14

him back. There's officer Justin

54:16

Mendoza explaining what happened. Now

54:32

the first responders claimed that the reason they

54:34

were taking so long is because they were

54:36

waiting for more shields so that they could

54:38

safely breach the classrooms. They also

54:40

were waiting for officers from the Department

54:42

of Public Safety and BORTAC, which is

54:44

an agency that had better equipment to

54:46

deal with an active shooter situation. You

54:49

know, I didn't even bother throwing my rifle

54:51

plates at all. Like I

54:53

said, we didn't have any shields, no

54:56

flash fangs, no nothing that we could have used to

55:01

cater distraction to not

55:03

only make sure

55:06

we go home at the end of the day, but

55:10

at least more of these kids can go home at the end of the day.

55:12

I understand this is a job we signed up for. Yeah,

55:15

we put our life on the line, but

55:19

none of us have never been in this type

55:21

of situation. I never thought any of the situation

55:23

ever happened here. Many

55:26

of the officers admitted that they were scared

55:28

to face a man with a rifle and

55:30

without proper shields, they figured they would die

55:32

themselves. Realize we

55:34

weren't equipped to make entry into

55:36

that room without several kinds of leads.

55:41

I think that's something that we had to

55:43

do. We had to come back now and that kind of haunts

55:45

me. If it was a pistol or something, it would have been

55:47

maybe a different process. At

55:49

that point, we had no choice but just to wait

55:52

and try to get something that had better

55:56

coverage where we could actually

55:58

stand up to him. secured the scene

56:02

and just kept him contained into what

56:05

we thought at that point was that

56:07

one classroom. Lt. Javier Martinez

56:09

would later say, had anybody

56:11

gone through that door, he would have killed whoever

56:13

it was. I mean, we can only carry so

56:15

many ballistic vests on you. That

56:18

.223 round would have gone right through you in

56:20

the door. I mean, he was ready. He was

56:22

ready for us. At one point,

56:24

this interaction is heard between

56:26

two officers. Wanna jump

56:29

the fucking gate or what? What's

56:31

the safest way to do this? I'm not trying

56:33

to get clapped out. Me neither.

56:36

I know I called Mike and I know he

56:38

is a special response team so I think they

56:40

got notified. So they will be on their way

56:42

too. But I know that this is

56:44

something that needs to be done like now ASAP. And

56:47

I also don't like standing right by the windows where

56:49

we can get shot bro. Another

56:51

interaction captured on body cam footage

56:53

showed an officer brainstorming about how

56:55

he could get inside of the

56:58

classroom. He says, quote, we

57:00

need to go in there. I wonder if

57:02

I can get in there and maybe open that door.

57:05

End quote. But then another

57:07

officer says, quote, he's in there.

57:10

He's going to shoot at you again. He's

57:12

going to hit you that time. You

57:15

have nowhere to go. End quote. Then

57:18

another officer is heard saying, quote,

57:21

this is so sad dude. He

57:23

shot kids bro. End quote. And

57:26

look, I get it. No

57:29

one wants to get shot. And at

57:31

the end of the day, everyone wants to go back

57:34

home to their families. But

57:36

while the officer sat around waiting for

57:38

shields, the students inside room

57:41

112 were desperately

57:43

waiting for the police to come in and

57:45

save them. They also

57:47

didn't have shields. And

57:49

some of the injured children were bleeding out

57:52

and dying. So

57:54

it's at this point when Chloe Torres

57:56

decides to pull out her phone and

57:59

dial 9-1-1. 911.

58:01

Now we are going to play this 911

58:03

call for you, but it is a little

58:05

hard to hear. What

58:31

is your name ma'am? Hello,

58:33

Tori. It is me, Tori. There is a lot of dead bodies.

58:36

911, please. Can you just hear the 911 call? Listen,

58:40

please, please help. You

58:43

need to tell them something. You have to be quiet. I'm

58:45

sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

58:47

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. 911

58:51

has seen a lot of these situations. My dad taught me when

58:53

I was a little girl. I can't

58:56

believe it. Just

58:59

in help from my teacher, they feel alive at their shop.

59:03

If you couldn't hear that, the dispatcher

59:05

says, I'm calling with the police department.

59:07

Are you okay? No.

59:09

There is a school shooting. Okay.

59:11

Yes, ma'am. I have multiple units there.

59:13

Are you with officers or are you

59:15

barricaded somewhere? I'm

59:17

in classroom. What's the classroom number? 112.

59:22

What's your name, ma'am? Chloe

59:24

Torres, please hurry. There's a lot of

59:26

dead bodies. Stay on

59:28

the line, okay? You said you were in room 112. Yes,

59:32

ma'am. Please send help. You need

59:34

to tell them that they need to be quiet. I

59:37

am. I am. I'm telling everyone to be

59:39

quiet. And now nobody is listening

59:41

to me. I know how to handle

59:43

these situations. My dad taught me

59:45

when I was a little girl. Send

59:48

help. Some of my teachers are

59:50

still alive, but they're shot. My

59:53

father, Reuben told director Charlie Min

59:55

that his daughter is brave and

59:57

courageous. He said, we are

59:59

very grateful. The we've had talks about the shootings

1:00:01

that have been going on around our nation. We

1:00:03

do a lot of dry runs or what s

1:00:05

mode you do if you were in this situation.

1:00:08

Luckily. Because he had prepared his daughter

1:00:10

for an active shooter scenario. Where. We

1:00:12

would end up surviving the shooting. But.

1:00:14

The fact that she even had to call Nine

1:00:17

One One when the shooter was walking in and

1:00:19

out of her classroom was horrible because that put

1:00:21

her life in danger. No

1:00:23

clues. eighteen, many, nine, one one

1:00:25

call would end up being a

1:00:28

huge part of this story. Up

1:00:31

until this point, many of the

1:00:33

responding officers. Claimed to be, didn't.

1:00:35

Know students were in the classrooms.

1:00:38

They. Did think it was a

1:00:40

possibility. But. With this phone

1:00:42

call where she says we're in room

1:00:44

One twelve, there's a lot of dead

1:00:46

bodies. A know know that

1:00:49

their victims and nice rooms. And.

1:00:51

From they are they should as

1:00:53

immediately me their way inside, but

1:00:55

that wouldn't happen. Active.

1:00:58

Shooter protocol was ignored here.

1:01:00

And. The kids would have to wait another

1:01:02

thirty. Eight minutes for help to

1:01:05

arise. During. Not wait.

1:01:07

Chloe. Would call Nine One One again.

1:01:12

Areas such as A Source. That.

1:01:20

She says quote. How far

1:01:22

are you all the way? They're. Inside

1:01:24

of a building and you to stay quiet?

1:01:26

Okay, Chloe. Then tells

1:01:28

the students around her quote. They're

1:01:31

inside the building. We. Just need

1:01:33

to stay quiet. And quo.

1:01:36

Now. Other children and room one twelve

1:01:38

would call nine one one as well.

1:01:41

In fact, Chloe best friend

1:01:43

emery to Garza. Tried to

1:01:45

call nine One One earlier in the

1:01:48

shooting. But. Sadly, The.

1:01:50

Shooter T Men and killed her. And.

1:01:52

Chloe Torres watched as her best.

1:01:54

Friend died right in front of her. Lead.

1:01:57

Or on my on the girl who.

1:02:00

The blood all over herself. Also.

1:02:02

Called Nine One One several times.

1:02:05

But. The second call was the only one

1:02:07

that came through. However, During

1:02:09

that called, the dispatcher couldn't hear what

1:02:12

she was saying. So she was

1:02:14

hung up on. There. Were seven

1:02:16

different? Nine? One one cause they

1:02:18

came from room one twelve and

1:02:20

still. The. Police would not come in

1:02:22

to save them. Know. Again,

1:02:25

the main argument for why the

1:02:27

police didn't breach the classrooms. Was.

1:02:29

Because they thought the shooter had

1:02:32

barricaded himself. And was in

1:02:34

the classroom alone. But. clearly

1:02:36

whiskies. Nine one one calls.

1:02:39

That. Wasn't the case. In.

1:02:41

Reality, they were just too scared to

1:02:43

go when. In. Just to

1:02:46

show you how and organize

1:02:48

this entire operation was. Many

1:02:50

of the officers thought that that

1:02:52

hallway had been cleared. And. That

1:02:55

most of the classrooms. Rimmed V. One.

1:02:57

Officer named Rimando Laura was sitting at

1:03:00

the end of the hall with his

1:03:02

gun pointed. Towards Room One twelve.

1:03:04

And to take a more safe position.

1:03:07

He decided to open the classroom door

1:03:09

behind. Him and lay down in the

1:03:11

doorway. But. As he did,

1:03:14

he heard something behind him. Body.

1:03:16

Cam footage shows him. Peek into

1:03:19

the classroom where he saw dozens

1:03:21

of students hiding. And.

1:03:23

He is shocked. I.

1:03:25

Mean and his mind this whole way had

1:03:28

already. Been evacuated. So

1:03:30

he quickly tells the other officers

1:03:32

hey, We. Have kids in here. The.

1:03:35

Then go into the classroom and

1:03:37

yell out, is anyone hurt. And

1:03:40

the kids scream out know but they. Are

1:03:43

all hysterically crying? The.

1:03:45

Officers tell them to stay calm.

1:03:47

And. From there the kids start jumping

1:03:50

out of the classroom window to

1:03:52

safety. Here is Sergeant

1:03:54

Daniel Core and auto. The

1:03:56

with broke out the window. Is

1:03:59

are sending a. The kids in

1:04:01

there and we start a

1:04:03

mountain. Unlike unlike some users

1:04:05

choose everywhere. So it wasn't

1:04:07

until this very moment when the officers

1:04:09

realize that there were children in nearly

1:04:11

all of the fourth grade classrooms along

1:04:13

the hallway. So from here they start

1:04:16

evacuating all the classes that they could.

1:04:18

And as they did, they couldn't help

1:04:20

but see the terror on the children's

1:04:22

faces. Your. Sergeant Daniel Corn auto

1:04:24

explaining what this was like. As

1:04:26

a result in a mouth full

1:04:28

in a Knopfler man, we're breaking

1:04:30

the of the lines, leading the

1:04:33

blind and and toilet and all.

1:04:35

Parties. Are

1:04:37

good to see the austerity worth. It

1:04:41

it's scissors and says it's. Said

1:04:49

all censor. Certain.

1:04:58

Now. In these types of situations, they're

1:05:00

supposed to be. A command post,

1:05:03

In this helps guide the first

1:05:05

responders and it just helps organize.

1:05:07

Everything. But. By this

1:05:09

point or hadn't even been

1:05:11

a designated command post. And

1:05:14

even worse, They hadn't

1:05:16

even officially put an officer in

1:05:18

charge. These two things are.

1:05:20

Literally the first things you do

1:05:23

in an emergency situation in because

1:05:25

they sailed to set these up.

1:05:28

There was a lot of miscommunication.

1:05:31

Here is Officer Michael Wally.

1:05:33

Describing the chaos, I

1:05:35

care for that was always. Supposed

1:05:39

to charge more. Than

1:05:42

two hours. A

1:05:47

no. I'm not

1:05:49

in there are not in, Always Talk

1:05:51

and Oregon and I'm a subtler. Divers

1:05:53

talking to are dumber nurturing cases coming

1:05:55

back out to me so there's gotta

1:05:57

be someone else. To

1:06:00

be someone else in charge. Someone

1:06:03

tell me what to do with

1:06:05

a new notice. Furthermore, the bachelor

1:06:07

outline and I help. But

1:06:09

chain of command as every day. And.

1:06:12

It was not there. and based on

1:06:14

active shooter protocol, the District's police chief

1:06:16

Pete, earned Donda we're supposed to be

1:06:18

the one in charge, but he didn't

1:06:20

even have a radio on a my

1:06:22

day so clearly he wasn't doing a

1:06:24

great job on organizing everything. And

1:06:26

many of the officers on seen are still

1:06:29

completely unaware of what's going on. Some.

1:06:31

Don't even realize their victims inside.

1:06:33

Use. One conversation that body cam footage

1:06:35

picked up between an officer. On.

1:06:38

The Border Patrol agent. The. Border Patrol

1:06:40

agent says. I thought he

1:06:42

said Victims Room Twelve. Know we

1:06:44

hadn't heard. Anybody hurt?

1:06:47

No. Not here, No sir. Now.

1:06:50

Overhearing this, another officer steps in and

1:06:52

says yes there are, We have an

1:06:54

active shooter lost contact. We had an

1:06:56

officer's wife call them and said she

1:06:58

was dying. We've got a call that

1:07:00

there were a lot of victims in

1:07:02

room Twelve. So. As you can

1:07:04

see. This. Is about as unorganized is

1:07:06

it could possibly get and as each

1:07:08

minute past many of the first responders

1:07:11

or getting paranoid knowing that they're taking

1:07:13

far too long to breach the classrooms.

1:07:15

Once heard saying fuck we're taking to

1:07:17

on. Other officers ask what are

1:07:20

we doing. Some. Say it's been about an

1:07:22

hour. And we waiting on does anybody

1:07:24

know? By. This point there

1:07:26

are. Nearly four hundred officers at

1:07:28

the school. In. Words has

1:07:30

quickly spread around you've all the

1:07:33

that a shooter was on campus.

1:07:35

Rob. Elementary had even posted on

1:07:38

their social media seen quote. Lab.

1:07:40

Elementary is under lockdown

1:07:42

status. Rob Elementary appearance

1:07:45

fees. Know: at this time

1:07:47

Rob Elementary is under lockdown

1:07:49

status due to gunshots and

1:07:51

the. Area. The. Students and

1:07:53

staff or sees in the building. The.

1:07:56

Building is secure and loot doing

1:07:58

stuff is. Your. Cooperation is

1:08:00

needed at this time by not

1:08:02

visiting the campus. As

1:08:05

soon as the lockdown status is lifted,

1:08:07

you will be notified. Thank

1:08:09

you for your cooperation. Signed,

1:08:12

Anne-Marie Espinoza, Executive

1:08:15

Director of Communications and Marketing,

1:08:18

Yuval D.C. ISD." Now,

1:08:22

even though this post asked the parents

1:08:24

not to come to the school, no

1:08:27

parent is actually going to listen. When

1:08:30

you hear that there's an active shooter at

1:08:32

your kid's school, your first

1:08:34

thought is, I need to go get my

1:08:36

child. And soon enough,

1:08:38

hundreds of concerned parents are pulling

1:08:41

up to Rob Elementary to see

1:08:43

what's going on. Earlier

1:08:45

that day, a man named

1:08:47

Alfred Garza was on his lunch break

1:08:50

when his daughter's mother called and said

1:08:52

there was an active shooter at Rob

1:08:54

Elementary. Alfred's daughter was

1:08:57

Anne-Marie Garza, and she was

1:08:59

a fourth grader in room 112. Now,

1:09:02

at the time, no one knew which rooms

1:09:04

in the school had been targeted, but

1:09:07

like many other parents, Alfred

1:09:09

immediately made his way over to

1:09:11

Rob Elementary. There was so

1:09:14

much traffic around the school. He

1:09:16

actually had to park three blocks down and

1:09:18

walk over, where a

1:09:20

sea of concerned parents were waiting

1:09:22

outside. The officers had

1:09:24

blocked off the entrances and

1:09:27

they weren't letting anyone in. They

1:09:29

also informed the parents to stay

1:09:31

calm and let them do

1:09:33

their jobs. Alfred said the

1:09:36

last thing he wanted to do was interfere,

1:09:39

especially if they're inside trying to take

1:09:41

down a gunman. He

1:09:43

had full trust that the officers were taking

1:09:45

care of things and keeping

1:09:47

their children safe, but little

1:09:49

did he know, that's not at

1:09:51

all what they were doing. In

1:09:54

Fact, his daughter Anne-Marie had been shot

1:09:56

in the abdomen inside room 112. And

1:10:00

because of the seventy seven minute we.

1:10:03

She would pass away from her

1:10:05

injuries. Alfred would later say

1:10:07

if he were to have known what was

1:10:09

going on inside. The School. He

1:10:12

would have gone home. Grabbed. His

1:10:14

rifle. Ended with the police

1:10:16

failed to do. Which. Is

1:10:18

one of the many tragic parts of

1:10:20

this story. While. Four

1:10:23

hundred police officers waited around.

1:10:25

Refusing. To breach the classrooms

1:10:27

because they were scared. They.

1:10:30

Were probably four hundred parents waiting

1:10:32

outside that would have gone into

1:10:34

those classrooms without a second thought.

1:10:37

And is each minute past. It

1:10:40

was clear that the parents were growing

1:10:42

frustrated with the lack of action. Hero

1:10:45

that they're right. There

1:10:47

there appear that Aurora defend himself. One

1:10:50

of the parents waiting outside Rob

1:10:52

Elementary was Virginia Vila. Her. Son

1:10:54

Jordan was also in room one twelve upon

1:10:56

hearing about the shooting at the school she

1:10:59

to media we made or a over. Now.

1:11:02

When she arrives one of the officers pointed

1:11:04

to the building where the shooter was located

1:11:06

and she said her heart dropped. Was.

1:11:08

The same building where her son's classroom was.

1:11:11

Over. The next few minutes she watched

1:11:13

his other children in the building evacuated

1:11:15

but as arise scan their faces. None.

1:11:18

Of them were her son. Frantically, she

1:11:20

texted her son's teacher, Irma Garcia

1:11:22

to see if everyone was okay,

1:11:24

but she never got a response.

1:11:27

As because Irma Garcia. Is

1:11:29

already dead. But luckily. Jordan.

1:11:32

Was one of the few kids in room One

1:11:34

Twelve that would walk away on injured. But.

1:11:37

At this point, the parents are

1:11:39

waiting outside and are understandably frustrated.

1:11:41

Many of them had been near

1:11:44

for nearly an hour and a

1:11:46

gunman was still inside at school

1:11:48

with students. Even further,

1:11:51

They. Are watching as hundreds of

1:11:53

police officers are just. Standing

1:11:55

around doing nothing so parents

1:11:57

start taking matters into their

1:12:00

own hands. One. Woman

1:12:02

was named Angeles Gomez in she

1:12:04

had two kids at Rob Elementary.

1:12:07

Angeles' had just been at the

1:12:09

school earlier that. Morning for

1:12:11

her children's awards ceremony and

1:12:13

then afterwards she immediately went

1:12:15

back to work. For

1:12:17

just ten minutes after she. Started

1:12:19

working. She got the

1:12:22

call about an active shooter at

1:12:24

Rob Elementary, so Angeline rushes back

1:12:26

doing one hundred miles. Per hour

1:12:28

down the roads. When. She

1:12:31

arrives at the school. She. Hops

1:12:33

out of her car and started

1:12:35

sprinting towards her children's classrooms. But.

1:12:38

As she gets closer to the

1:12:40

building, a Us Marshal stops her.

1:12:42

She. Tries telling him that to have

1:12:45

her babies are inside and she needs

1:12:47

to get them. With us.

1:12:49

Marshal won't let her. Now

1:12:51

and really, along with dozens of

1:12:53

other parents. Are furious. Here

1:12:56

are all of these officers: Just

1:12:58

standing around doing nothing, While

1:13:01

their children are inside with the gunmen,

1:13:04

So Angeles' starts talking with the

1:13:06

parents around hers saying quote. We.

1:13:09

Should all just go in and save our

1:13:11

children. If we all push

1:13:13

forward, they can't stop all of us.

1:13:16

I'm going to get my child. But.

1:13:18

The Us Marshal overseers her.

1:13:21

And. In response, He

1:13:23

pleases her in handcuffs. Know

1:13:27

after a few minutes Angeles'

1:13:29

starts telling them I'll cooperate.

1:13:31

Just please uncut me. And

1:13:33

they do. But. As soon as

1:13:35

she is on cost. See takes off running

1:13:38

towards to school. Hops the

1:13:40

sense and makes her way towards

1:13:42

her son's classroom. Moments.

1:13:44

Later. Video from that

1:13:47

day shows Angeline running from the

1:13:49

school holding her son's hand. Then.

1:13:52

As soon as she got him to safety,

1:13:54

she ran back towards the school. To

1:13:56

grab her other child. And.

1:13:59

Again, Officers. Try

1:14:01

to stop her. And she

1:14:03

told them give me a vast

1:14:05

i'll go in there myself now

1:14:07

eventually Angeles' would go through and

1:14:10

get. Her other child to see be

1:14:12

as well. And while she

1:14:14

was in school she said she heard

1:14:16

gunshots. Throughout the whole way. But

1:14:18

I think this story just goes to show.

1:14:21

That. The students in their parents showed

1:14:23

so much bravery that day and many

1:14:25

of them were willing to put their

1:14:28

lives on the. Line to Save

1:14:30

those children. Meanwhile, the

1:14:32

hundreds of officers. On. You're.

1:14:35

Still keeping their distance, Waiting.

1:14:37

Around for backup. Angeles,

1:14:40

Gomez would later tell Cbs News

1:14:42

about. The officers quote is

1:14:44

anything they were being more

1:14:47

aggressive towards us parents that.

1:14:49

Were willing to go in there. And. Like

1:14:51

I told one of the officers quote. I

1:14:54

don't need you to protect me. Is

1:14:56

anything I need you to go in there

1:14:58

with me to go protect my kids. They.

1:15:01

Were more focused on keeping us back

1:15:03

in getting into that school. And.

1:15:06

Now we are going to play you

1:15:09

a short little clip of the chaos

1:15:11

going on outside with the parents. And

1:15:13

families. You're. Not going to be

1:15:16

able to make out anything they are saying.

1:15:18

But I do think it does a

1:15:20

great job showing just how chaotic. The.

1:15:23

Entire day wise. And

1:15:45

something that we do want to mention

1:15:47

his they clearly officers have to follow

1:15:49

protocol. He can't just allow parents to

1:15:52

run around a crime scene and put more innocent

1:15:54

lives in danger. And I'm sure many

1:15:56

of these officers were not happy with the way

1:15:58

things were being run. By. It is crazy

1:16:00

that out of the nearly 400 officers

1:16:02

on scene that day, not one

1:16:05

of them questioned authority and said, give

1:16:07

me a rifle, I'm going to go in there and take

1:16:09

this guy down. There were parents

1:16:11

waiting outside that were willing to do

1:16:13

it, so why weren't any of

1:16:16

the officers willing? By now, the

1:16:18

shooting had been going on for over

1:16:20

an hour and they were still waiting

1:16:22

for backup to arrive. In

1:16:24

a very tragic part of this story

1:16:27

is that some of the victims inside

1:16:29

room 111 were alive for

1:16:32

the majority of the shooting. Like

1:16:34

we mentioned earlier, Chloe Torres

1:16:36

watched her classmates die right in front

1:16:39

of her eyes. She

1:16:41

also watched both of her teachers get

1:16:43

shot. Now, Ms. Irma

1:16:45

Garcia died immediately, but Ms.

1:16:48

Eva Morellez didn't. She

1:16:50

was alive for most of the shooting. Chloe

1:16:53

said that in the first few minutes of the

1:16:55

shooting, she watched her teacher

1:16:57

scream and cry on the classroom floor.

1:17:00

When his time passed, she

1:17:02

became weaker and Ms.

1:17:05

Morellez began mumbling to her students

1:17:07

that she didn't want to die. But

1:17:09

she knew deep down that she

1:17:12

was dying and before bleeding out,

1:17:15

Ms. Morellez spoke about wanting to speak

1:17:17

to her daughter, it was her

1:17:19

dying wish. The students

1:17:21

felt hopeless watching their teacher in

1:17:23

this condition. They said

1:17:25

she even grabbed a plastic bag and

1:17:28

with the little energy she had left, she

1:17:31

wrapped it around her arm where

1:17:33

she had been shot. And then,

1:17:36

just before the police breached the

1:17:38

classroom, she began

1:17:40

vomiting and not long after

1:17:42

that, Ms. Morellez would pass away

1:17:45

from her injuries, which

1:17:47

is heartbreaking. If the

1:17:49

police would have gone in right away, she

1:17:52

likely would have lived. But

1:17:54

that's not how this story played out. Now,

1:17:57

according to the Yvaldi police, The

1:18:00

reason they didn't breach the classrooms right

1:18:02

away was because, one, they thought

1:18:05

the gunman was barricaded by himself,

1:18:08

but we've already established that they knew there

1:18:11

were children in the classroom with the gunman.

1:18:14

Chloe Torres's 911 call

1:18:16

proved that. And the

1:18:18

second reason on why they didn't breach

1:18:20

the classrooms was that they were waiting

1:18:22

around on backup. And

1:18:25

that backup was the Border Patrol

1:18:27

Tactical Unit, otherwise known

1:18:29

as BORTAC. Now,

1:18:31

BORTAC ended up getting to the school

1:18:33

at 1209pm, about

1:18:36

40 minutes into the shooting. But

1:18:39

believe it or not, after

1:18:42

they arrived, Police Chief Pete

1:18:44

Orredondo told them to wait.

1:18:47

You see, two classes down from room 111 was room

1:18:49

109, which still had a full classroom of students

1:18:54

inside. And the

1:18:57

door to their classroom was locked. Now,

1:19:00

Police Chief Orredondo wanted to wait

1:19:02

for a master key so he

1:19:04

could get their classroom evacuated before

1:19:06

they went in to stop the

1:19:08

gunman. Which is

1:19:10

wild. He knew full

1:19:12

and well that there were several

1:19:14

children inside the room with

1:19:17

the gunman. But his main

1:19:19

priority was finding a key to

1:19:21

the room two doors over.

1:19:23

Orredondo has even heard saying on

1:19:25

bodycam footage, quote, get

1:19:27

one of those school officials out here to give

1:19:29

you a master key to the rooms. As

1:19:32

soon as I clear this room, I'm

1:19:34

going to verify what's been vacated before

1:19:36

we do any kind of breaching.

1:19:39

Time is on our side right now, end

1:19:42

quote. Time is on

1:19:44

our side. As

1:19:46

children are bleeding out in the classroom

1:19:48

with the gunman. After

1:19:51

this, he says, quote, I

1:19:53

know we probably have kids in there, but we've

1:19:55

got to save the lives of the other ones,

1:19:58

end quote. He's saying out

1:20:00

loud that he wants to save the

1:20:03

kids in room 109 before

1:20:05

he saves the children in room 112. And

1:20:09

he said this knowing that people had been

1:20:11

shot and that there were multiple

1:20:13

casualties. Chloe said in

1:20:16

her call, there's a lot of dead

1:20:18

bodies. But apparently the kids

1:20:20

in room 109 were just more of

1:20:22

a priority than the children

1:20:25

who were literally dying from baseball

1:20:27

sized gunshot wounds. Now

1:20:30

it seems as if Pete Arredondo can

1:20:32

sense the urgency of some of

1:20:34

his fellow officers. After

1:20:36

nearly an hour of not breaching the

1:20:39

classrooms, they want to get in

1:20:41

there and save the children. But

1:20:43

in response to this urgency, Pete

1:20:46

Arredondo says, quote, we

1:20:48

are going to get rid of the kids first

1:20:50

before we do any kind of breaching. So

1:20:53

tell the guys to calm the fuck down for a

1:20:55

minute. End quote. Here's

1:20:58

Pete Arredondo's reasoning for why he

1:21:00

waited to breach the classroom even

1:21:02

after backup arrived. My

1:21:04

first thought is that we need to vacate.

1:21:06

We haven't been, we haven't contained. And

1:21:09

I know this is horrible and those are tram

1:21:11

tools to do, but we haven't contained. There's

1:21:13

probably going to be some deceased in there, but we don't need any more

1:21:16

from out here. For nearly 20 minutes,

1:21:19

the Border Patrol Tactical Unit is

1:21:21

waiting around in the hallway. They're

1:21:23

ready to breach the classroom and take down the gunman,

1:21:25

but they're still waiting on room 109 to

1:21:27

be evacuated. The officers stand in front

1:21:30

of room 109 for several minutes using

1:21:32

a number of different keys to try and unlock

1:21:34

the door. Meanwhile, people in room

1:21:36

111 and 112 are bleeding out and dying. But

1:21:40

finally, after what seemed like an eternity,

1:21:43

room 109 was eventually evacuated.

1:21:46

And only then was the Border Patrol Tactical

1:21:48

Unit giving clearance to take down the gunman.

1:21:51

It was now 12.50pm, 77 minutes

1:21:54

into the shooting, and the

1:21:56

Border Patrol Tactical Unit carefully made their way

1:21:59

down the hallway. towards room 111. With

1:22:01

their shields up and rifles ready, they quickly

1:22:04

unlocked the door and breached the classroom. In

1:22:06

the back left corner of the room, the gunman

1:22:08

was standing in front of a closet door near

1:22:11

the window. He fired several

1:22:13

shots and one bullet even grazed an

1:22:15

officer's head, but over the next

1:22:17

few seconds, the sound of gunfire echoed throughout

1:22:19

the school. By the time it was

1:22:21

over, the gunman was on the ground, dead. Here's

1:22:24

the audio of the gunshots that took down

1:22:26

the gunman. After

1:22:42

taking down the gunman, the

1:22:44

first responders immediately went to work

1:22:47

caring for the injured. In

1:22:49

room 111, the teacher, Mr.

1:22:51

Arnie Reyes was the only survivor.

1:22:54

At some point during the shooting, he had

1:22:57

passed out from blood loss. And

1:22:59

the next thing he remembered is

1:23:01

being surrounded by first responders. As

1:23:04

he opened his eyes, one of them told

1:23:06

him, quote, Get up if you can.

1:23:09

But he quickly realized he couldn't

1:23:11

move at all. So from

1:23:14

there, they grabbed him by his pants, pulled

1:23:17

him into the hallway, and then brought

1:23:19

him to the hospital. In

1:23:21

room 112, the

1:23:23

13 surviving children were still hidden

1:23:25

all throughout the classroom. Some

1:23:28

were even lying on the floor amongst

1:23:30

their dead friends. And

1:23:33

many had been shot by the gunman. I

1:24:00

told him, I told him, I told

1:24:02

him, I told him, he's

1:24:04

first, he's first. When

1:24:15

the first responders entered those classrooms,

1:24:18

they realized right then that

1:24:21

the reality of what happened was far

1:24:23

greater than what they imagined. There

1:24:26

were bodies everywhere, blood

1:24:29

everywhere, and children

1:24:31

were quite literally piled on top of

1:24:33

one another. In room

1:24:36

112, the fearful children hesitantly

1:24:38

came out of their hiding

1:24:40

spots with looks of

1:24:42

primal fear on their faces. Over

1:24:45

the next few minutes, the children were evacuated

1:24:48

out of the building, but unfortunately,

1:24:51

due to the chaos outside of Rob

1:24:53

Elementary, it was extremely

1:24:55

difficult getting people to the hospital,

1:24:58

so some had to be treated right there

1:25:01

in the parking lot. One

1:25:03

of these people was Ms. Ava Morella.

1:25:06

Sadly, when the EMS got to

1:25:08

her, she was still alive, but

1:25:11

right as she was loaded up into an

1:25:13

ambulance, she would take

1:25:15

her final breath and pass

1:25:17

away. The same thing would

1:25:20

happen to three students who were in room

1:25:22

112, Jackie

1:25:24

Cazares, Jose Flores, and

1:25:27

Xavier Lopez. All

1:25:30

had heartbeats as they were pulled out

1:25:32

of their classroom, but all

1:25:34

three would end up passing away. Sadly,

1:25:37

if the police would

1:25:39

have gotten to these injured victims

1:25:41

sooner, they likely would have survived.

1:25:45

And the outside of Rob Elementary was

1:25:47

a complete frenzy. There were children

1:25:49

still running from the school covered in blood,

1:25:51

and many were hysterically crying over what they

1:25:54

just went through. Virginia Vayla's

1:25:56

son, Jordan, had been in room 112,

1:25:58

and she had been there the entire entire

1:26:00

time anxiously waiting to see his face.

1:26:03

Soon enough, she saw him and a wave

1:26:05

of relief washed over her. Now,

1:26:07

Jordan's legs were covered in blood, but he

1:26:09

was running from the school, which meant he

1:26:12

was alive. But something that broke

1:26:14

her heart was the look of primal fear

1:26:16

on her son's face. He was in

1:26:18

survival mode, something no child

1:26:20

should ever have to go through.

1:26:24

Another injured victim running from

1:26:26

room 112 was A.J. Martinez.

1:26:29

Believe it or not, A.J. had

1:26:31

been shot in the leg, but

1:26:33

he too was running from the school. And

1:26:36

just to show you how unorganized

1:26:39

everything was that day, A.J.

1:26:41

wasn't even put in an ambulance.

1:26:45

At the time, school buses were taking

1:26:47

children from the school and driving them

1:26:49

to the local civic center to

1:26:51

be reunited with their parents. And

1:26:54

despite A.J. having a gunshot wound

1:26:56

to his leg, they

1:26:58

put him on a school bus. His

1:27:01

parents were actually at Rob Elementary

1:27:04

that day, and as soon as

1:27:06

they saw him run out of the school, they

1:27:08

tried to run over to him, but

1:27:11

the police held them back. When

1:27:13

his parents asked why he wasn't going

1:27:15

in an ambulance, they

1:27:17

were told that the ambulances were

1:27:19

reserved for the deceased children, so

1:27:22

he couldn't go in one. It

1:27:24

was also reported that there were several

1:27:27

injured kids on that school bus, and

1:27:30

because of that, there was blood everywhere.

1:27:33

Here is a video of

1:27:35

Chloe Torres on that bus. In

1:27:38

it, she is absolutely covered in

1:27:40

her friend's blood, and here

1:27:42

is what she tells the officer. Okay?

1:27:45

Okay? Okay. Okay. Okay. You're so great. Now

1:28:04

the funeral home across the street would end

1:28:06

up being a place of refuge for many

1:28:09

of the injured. One of

1:28:11

the employees there named Claudia Perez said

1:28:13

that about a hundred children were inside

1:28:15

of their building as the evacuation took

1:28:17

place. She would later say, we

1:28:20

had one little girl come and she was

1:28:22

covered in blood and I

1:28:24

thought it was hers. I

1:28:26

asked her if she could come with me to the

1:28:28

restroom and then she did and

1:28:30

I started asking her, do I have

1:28:33

permission to start cleaning you down? I

1:28:35

wanted to see if she was injured. She

1:28:38

says, it's not my blood, it's my

1:28:40

friend's blood, but she

1:28:42

has too much of it. So

1:28:45

we start cleaning her up little by little. She

1:28:48

has a sweater in her hand and

1:28:50

I tell her, I'm going to ask

1:28:52

you to be a big girl. She

1:28:54

says, okay, but I just want my

1:28:56

mommy, please. I

1:28:59

just want my mommy. I

1:29:01

said, I promise I'll get you your mommy,

1:29:04

but for now I need you to put on this

1:29:06

sweater. I'm cleaning you up

1:29:08

the best I can before I let you go. When

1:29:11

I get to her little face, I

1:29:13

noticed she had shards. She's

1:29:16

bleeding. It was so

1:29:18

heartbreaking. Soon

1:29:20

enough, law enforcement came into the funeral home

1:29:22

as well. Since they didn't

1:29:24

have an established command post, this would

1:29:26

be the place where the Texas Department

1:29:28

of Public Safety officers strategized everything they

1:29:31

did that day. And while they

1:29:33

did, the staff at the funeral home handed

1:29:35

out refreshments and did their best to distract

1:29:37

the children from the massacre next door. According

1:29:41

to the Yuvaldi leader news, the

1:29:43

consensus among the staff, they said, was

1:29:45

to keep the children protected no matter

1:29:47

what. Another funeral

1:29:49

home employee named Monica Saiz Martinez said,

1:29:52

I remember this one

1:29:54

particular little boy. I don't know his

1:29:56

name. I just remember his face. He

1:29:58

was a small little boy with a glasses, he

1:30:01

would just cry. They were here for

1:30:03

maybe two hours. These scared,

1:30:05

scared kids. It

1:30:08

was an incredibly hopeless situation. Parents

1:30:10

would come into the funeral home absolutely

1:30:12

distraught, their tearful eyes darting all over

1:30:15

the room, trying to find their children.

1:30:17

Some would eventually find them, others

1:30:20

would not. One of the

1:30:22

parents who helped was Alfred Garza. He

1:30:24

didn't know it at the time, but

1:30:26

his daughter, Amory, had died in room

1:30:28

112. But despite

1:30:30

his fears, he did everything he could to

1:30:32

help other children that day. Monica

1:30:35

would later say, he was in here

1:30:37

and he helped take the boys to the restroom because

1:30:39

it was chaotic. Alfred was here and

1:30:41

he was so calm. Now

1:30:43

after the surviving children are

1:30:46

evacuated, officers inside

1:30:48

the school turn their attention to

1:30:50

the deceased victims in

1:30:52

rooms 111 and 112. As you know, in room 111, every single

1:30:59

child in that classroom lost their

1:31:01

life. Around the room,

1:31:03

desks were pushed around. Pencils,

1:31:06

paper, shoes, and

1:31:09

bullet casings scattered the floor, showing

1:31:12

the absolute chaos that took

1:31:14

place inside. Then in the right

1:31:16

hand corner of the room were the

1:31:18

bodies. All 11 children

1:31:21

inside room 111 were found

1:31:23

huddled together in the

1:31:26

corner under a desk.

1:31:28

There was blood and tissue

1:31:30

everywhere. Their bodies

1:31:32

had been so mutilated in the attack.

1:31:36

Some of them didn't even look human. And

1:31:39

then, right above their

1:31:41

little bodies, on the whiteboard,

1:31:44

with something so disturbing, the officers

1:31:46

couldn't even believe what they were

1:31:49

looking at. During the

1:31:51

shooting, the gunman had

1:31:53

dipped his fingers into the victim's

1:31:55

blood and used it

1:31:57

to write L-O-L on the

1:31:59

whiteboard. word, laughing out

1:32:02

loud. That's the

1:32:04

message he wanted to portray as

1:32:07

a group of investigators began identifying

1:32:09

what was left of their bodies.

1:32:12

Another group went to work room 112. And

1:32:15

there they

1:32:17

found a similar scene. In

1:32:20

that room, 10 people would lose their

1:32:22

lives, eight students and

1:32:25

two teachers. The

1:32:27

victims of room 112 were also

1:32:29

found in the back corner of

1:32:31

the classroom. The teachers, Irma

1:32:33

Garcia and Eva Morellez were

1:32:35

located in front of their

1:32:38

students. It was

1:32:40

clear that they had been trying to

1:32:42

guard them from the gunman. Irma Garcia

1:32:44

was found dead, holding some of

1:32:46

her students in her arms. In

1:32:49

her very last moments, she was doing

1:32:52

everything she could to make

1:32:54

them feel protected. The scene

1:32:56

in these two classrooms was

1:32:58

unlike anything the investigators had

1:33:00

ever seen. The victims

1:33:02

bodies were riddled with baseball

1:33:05

sized holes. Some of

1:33:07

their bodies were so mutilated, they

1:33:09

would later have to be identified

1:33:11

through DNA or by

1:33:13

what they were wearing that day. Dr.

1:33:16

Roy Guerrero, who was the pediatrician

1:33:18

that testified for the House committee

1:33:21

would later say, quote, two

1:33:24

children whose bodies had been

1:33:26

so pulverized by the bullets fired

1:33:28

at them decapitated, whose flesh

1:33:31

had been so ripped apart that

1:33:33

the only clue as to their identities

1:33:36

was the blood spattered cartoon

1:33:38

clothes still clinging to them,

1:33:42

clinging for life, but

1:33:44

finding none. End quote.

1:33:48

The crime scene was so brutal

1:33:50

that some of the officers on scene

1:33:52

ended up getting sick. Here

1:33:54

is body cam footage of some

1:33:57

of the officers running outside crying.

1:34:00

and vomiting after what they just saw.

1:34:30

This is a very, her what they brought out. It

1:34:32

was horrible. But

1:35:01

bus after bus, your

1:35:03

child is still not there. But

1:35:05

you're still holding on to hope. I'm

1:35:08

sure they're just on their way over. Maybe

1:35:11

they're injured and lagging behind. However,

1:35:14

as each hour passes, the parents

1:35:17

who are still waiting around begin to

1:35:19

feel a knot in their stomachs. They

1:35:22

also begin to recognize the other

1:35:24

parents standing around. And

1:35:27

it soon becomes clear that the only

1:35:29

parents here are parents from room

1:35:31

111 and 112. And

1:35:35

that's when the real fear starts to

1:35:37

settle in. There were a lot of tears

1:35:39

at the civic center that day. Strangers

1:35:42

were even crying and embracing

1:35:44

each other. Some of

1:35:46

the families formed prayer circles, pleading

1:35:49

with God to just bring their baby home.

1:35:52

But soon enough, the sun began to

1:35:55

set and the crowds

1:35:57

grew smaller. Later that

1:35:59

night, Officials began pulling

1:36:01

the parents inside and

1:36:04

taking DNA samples. Sadly,

1:36:06

for some of the children,

1:36:09

their bodies were so mutilated,

1:36:11

DNA is the only way they

1:36:13

could be identified. And then

1:36:15

by midnight, there were only around

1:36:17

40 people still at the

1:36:19

Civic Center, all of whom had

1:36:22

children in room 111 and 112. Officials

1:36:27

then gathered them all together, and it

1:36:29

was then when they were informed

1:36:32

that their child had passed

1:36:34

away. At the end of the

1:36:36

day, it was determined that 17 people

1:36:38

were injured and 21 people had

1:36:40

lost their lives. From the
