Warning, the following podcast is not suitable for

0:02

all audiences. We go into great detail with

0:04

every case that we cover and do our

0:07

best to bring viewers even deeper into the

0:09

stories by utilizing disturbing audio and sound effects.

0:12

Trigger warnings from the stories we

0:14

cover may include violence, rape, murder,

0:16

and offenses against children. This

0:18

podcast is not for everyone. You have

0:20

been warned. May

0:23

24, 2022 started out like

0:25

a normal day, in the

0:27

small Texas town of Yuvaldi.

0:30

But by the end of that day, there

0:32

was a collective gloom over the

0:35

entire nation as we

0:37

learned that 19 students and 2

0:39

teachers lost their lives after

0:41

being gunned down in their 4th grade

0:43

classrooms. Elementary

0:45

schools are supposed to be filled

0:48

with laughter, joy, and innocence. And

0:51

Rob Elementary was everything but that

0:53

on that horrific day. The

0:56

sound of laughter was replaced with

0:58

screams. There was fear

1:00

instead of joy. And for

1:02

every child there that day, if they

1:04

didn't lose their lives, they lost

1:06

a piece of their innocence. No

1:09

child should ever feel unsafe in their

1:11

classroom. They shouldn't have to

1:13

smear their friend's blood all over them

1:15

to stay alive. And

1:17

they definitely shouldn't have to sit in a room

1:19

with a gunman for 77 minutes while the

1:23

police were just feet away the entire

1:25

time. But that was the

1:27

reality for the students of Rob Elementary. And

1:30

soon enough, the town of Yuvaldi was

1:33

a topic across many homes in America.

1:36

So in this episode, we are going to

1:38

talk about the victims of the Yuvaldi school

1:40

shooting, the survivors, the

1:42

horrific aftermath, and the police

1:45

response. So this

1:47

is the Yuvaldi school shooting part 3. I'm

1:51

Courtney Brown. And I'm Colin Brown.

1:53

And you're listening to Murder in

1:56

America. Wow!

3:05

d Junior had lived in you've all

3:07

the his whole life. This was his

3:09

home base. where is people? So like

3:11

the rest of the town, He never

3:13

expected tragedy to strike so close to

3:15

home. On May Twenty fourth. Two thousand

3:17

Twenty two the As got the call

3:20

that he was needed at Rob Elementary.

3:22

He served as you ball these justice

3:24

of the piece that because it's such

3:26

a small town he also served as

3:28

their de sac though coroner and that

3:30

day he was needed to help identify

3:32

the bodies a task he didn't want

3:34

to do. But he knew we had

3:36

to. The as would later say for two

3:38

hours I sat there pairing myself and getting

3:40

ready for the scene. Where about to see?

3:43

Because you know it's going to be a

3:45

tough seen. Lolo Diaz

3:47

junior actually went to school at Rob

3:49

Elementary. So did his wife and all

3:52

of the children. So as he drove

3:54

up to the school that day, It

3:57

was hard to believe that this

3:59

was the site as one America's worst

4:01

school shootings. Before. Going

4:03

inside He reminded himself quote.

4:06

You. Have to be strong. And

4:08

you have to maintain professionalism. Because

4:10

the families are counting on you now. And

4:13

with that, he took a deep breath.

4:16

In. Walk through the doors. First.

4:19

He was approached by the medical

4:21

examiner who debrief can on the

4:23

situation. Keep. In mind is about

4:25

to thirty pm on the day of the

4:27

shooting. So there's still a lot of

4:29

chaos going on at the school. And.

4:31

Fact: some of the injured students had been

4:34

moved to other classroom so that he a

4:36

mask attend. To their injuries. The.

4:39

As would later say, So. When we

4:41

got there there were children and four rooms

4:43

the initial two rooms plus two other rooms

4:46

with then when room by room getting the

4:48

plan together on what we were going to

4:50

need to make sure that we identified everybody

4:52

correctly. After coming up with

4:55

a plan. He has entered room

4:57

one eleven and one twelve and nothing

4:59

could have prepared him for what he

5:02

was about to walk into. The.

5:04

Classrooms looked like a. War

5:06

Zone. There was blood, his

5:08

body parts, and carnage all

5:10

over. It. Was even sad

5:12

that the rooms had this overwhelming smell

5:14

of iron because of all the blood.

5:17

You see the weapon used in

5:19

the shooting like most know shootings

5:21

was in a are says keep

5:23

a weapon built for war. The.

5:26

Gun is designed to blow. Apart, it's

5:28

target. Although it's

5:30

of an A or fifteen or shot into.

5:32

An adult human body. it

5:34

so destructive. A kinda capital

5:37

a person. In these

5:39

victims were children. So as

5:41

you can imagine, the trauma to

5:43

their little bodies was absolutely. Horrific.

5:46

Be. As would later say, quotes. It's

5:48

something you never want to see. It

5:51

had something you don't You cannot prepare

5:53

for. It's a picture that's going to

5:55

stay in my head forever. And.

5:57

quo. With. Years had

5:59

it job to do. So. We did

6:02

his best to put his emotions aside. And

6:04

began identifying the bodies. The

6:07

parents who had children in room

6:09

one Eleven in one twelve sent

6:11

and descriptions. Of what their child

6:13

was wearing that day. Sadly,

6:16

most of the bodies were so

6:18

torn apart. But that was the

6:20

only way they could be identified. So.

6:22

Starting and room One eleven. Diaz

6:25

located the body of eleven year

6:28

old Layla Murray Salazar. Layla.

6:30

Was born on September nineteenth. two

6:34

6:38

6:43

6:45

6:47

6:49

6:52

would seem. Sweet child a mine. At.

6:54

The top of their lungs. Layla.

6:56

Was known for her generosity. Enjoy that

6:59

she brought everyone who knew her. From

7:01

7:04

nature and some of their sweetest memories

7:06

were going to The Vault a memorial

7:08

park. In feeding the do. As

7:11

Layla grew older, she discovered her love

7:13

for running. In. Our family believe

7:15

the she would one day. Be a big tracks

7:18

to. Her. Mom said quote.

7:20

She. Gave the world her heart

7:22

for spirit, And I wish she

7:24

here so she could have been something like a

7:27

track star. She. Loved runny.

7:29

It. Was her favorite thing. She. Left

7:31

her. She. Left to run.

7:34

She. Could have been something. And

7:36

I'm just sad we're not going to

7:38

have that and quote. But. Her

7:40

father said that now his daughter would

7:42

quote run with. The angels. And.

7:45

Her obituary they wrote quote. Our.

7:48

Hearts will forever be broken. Layla.

7:51

Love will create an opening in heaven

7:53

for her. Love for poor through in

7:55

shine down upon us. And.

7:57

Co. Next. One

8:00

8:15

8:18

8:20

8:22

he seemed to really thrive here. After

8:24

the move, his family said he went

8:26

from being quiet and reserved to really

8:28

outgoing. His uncle Bryn said. He. Always

8:30

wanted to put a smile on your face. He didn't

8:32

like it when you were sad or of sand or

8:34

anything like that. So we go out of his way

8:36

to make you smile to last to make you forget

8:38

that pain. It. Was also said that

8:41

he loved his family and Jesus. Family.

8:43

Member said. We. Will forever miss

8:56

A few months before the shooting his

9:09

9:12

plays that I would call the he would remember

9:14

and he would do it exactly like we practiced.

9:16

He was the sweetest little boy that I've ever

9:18

known. His eyes favorite superhero was

9:20

Spiderman and he dreamed of one day

9:23

becoming a police officer so he could

9:25

save lives just like Spiderman did. The

9:28

next body identified in room One

9:30

9:32

year old Nausea Alyssa Bravo. Is

9:34

10:09

Was always a bright light and their

10:12

10:14

10:16

the silver tiara and are small. Silver

10:19

casket was decorated. With pink

10:21

and purple flowers and a teddy bear.

10:23

Proposing. Would later write on Facebook

10:25

quote. It just feels like a

10:28

nightmare we cannot week off from. Her.

10:30

Siblings have to wake up every. Day knowing

10:32

she's not here with them. They

10:34

10:37

co. The. Next job identified

Has. A was an honor roll student who had

11:00

dreams of one day becoming a police officer

11:02

11:06

he told his mom, one of these days, mama,

11:08

11:10

baseball player. His mother, Alyssa, also

11:13

said that Jose always had a big

11:15

toothy smile on his face and that

11:17

his last was contagious. So. To

11:19

call him her little shadow as he was

11:21

always right by your side. A poem was

11:23

written for Jose and a red. I saw

11:25

my way to have an above a sky

11:27

13:02

of his daughter. She would

13:04

later write on Facebook quote. Has.

13:06

Tried a million. Two years. But.

13:08

Out of all those tears, I've cried. I

13:11

find happiness and performing at by

13:13

the sense and sharing her happiness

13:15

and everything that was great about

13:17

her on that stage. And

13:19

to watch every body dance reminds me

13:21

of my beautiful alley. And we

13:24

had so much love for her sisters and

13:26

showed it every day. And this you are

13:28

more. And quo. No.

13:31

Alleys absolute favorite movie in the

13:33

world was in Kanto and shortly

13:35

after her dad's her family was

13:37

13:39

to address from Disney. The.

13:42

Added in know with it that said quote.

13:44

We. Heard you Love and content. You

13:47

may notice how important butterflies are.

13:49

In the movie. They. Represent

13:51

magic, hope and family.

13:53

among many other things. We.

13:56

Gave alley a butterfly and one at

13:58

all of her sister's to her When

14:00

you. Fly. Until you find

14:02

your way towards tomorrow. And.

14:04

quo. The. Next victim in room

14:07

one eleven was ten year old Roy

14:09

Helio Fernando Torres. For. Hey, we're was

14:11

born on December six, two thousand and

14:13

eleven and according to his family, he love

14:15

being outside. Or Helio was one

14:17

of those kids that was constantly running

14:19

around with his cousins, playing tag football,

14:21

sitting soccer balls, and climbing trees no

14:23

matter how hot it was outside. His.

14:26

Parents said that. he was also super helpful

14:28

and would do is chores without even being

14:30

asked. When I came to his younger sister,

14:32

Mary, he considered himself her protector and always

14:34

made sure she got up for school in

14:36

the morning and off the bus in the

14:38

afternoon. The also enjoyed poke him

14:40

on football, playing video games and he

14:42

loved playing board games with his family

14:45

or Helio. Had big dreams of joining

14:47

the Navy, becoming a landscaper, and even

14:49

building his own house when he got

14:51

older. After. His death, his mother

14:53

put her mother's day card from him in

14:55

a box said so Cherish it Forever. She.

14:57

Would later say. I'm not going to have

15:00

a mother's day card from him this year. I'm not going

15:02

to have a hug from him. It's going to

15:04

be hard. His family also put

15:06

a memorial around the tree in their front

15:08

yard the he would always climb and in

15:10

the months after the shooting the tree really

15:12

blossomed with beautiful green leaves. It's

15:14

been hard on raw helio siblings grappling with the

15:17

fact that he will never come home. His.

15:19

Mother said of his six year old sister.

15:21

She. Knows he's not here anymore, but she still

15:24

ask me where he's coming home. I.

15:26

Tell her. He's not coming home. He's.

15:28

In heaven looking down on you. He's

15:30

taking care of you, taking care of all of

15:32

us. Were. Helio will be remembered as

15:34

a loving and bright young boy, but his

15:37

mother remarked. I lost a piece of

15:39

my heart. The next said

15:41

dumb identified and room one eleven

15:43

15:46

yeah, Rubio. For. Lexi.

15:48

Sadly, As Laevo D.

15:50

S. was identifying the bodies,

15:53

he actually recognized her. See.

15:55

New members as like he's families.

15:57

To seen her. Among the victims list.

16:00

Hope to see the least. Lexi.

16:02

Was born on October twentieth. two thousand

16:05

and eleven. And she was

16:07

extremely smart. Her family

16:09

said she always receive straight A's.

16:12

But her favorite subject was mass.

16:14

Lexi. Had of attending St.

16:16

Mary's University to obtain an.

16:19

Undergraduate and Mass. And

16:21

then she wanted to go get her law degree.

16:23

Which. Would have been the perfect fit for

16:25

her because her mom said quote. When.

16:28

She knew She was right. She. So

16:30

often was. She. Stood her

16:32

ground, She. Was from

16:34

direct voice unwavering. And.

16:37

quo. Her father, Felix

16:39

would later say quote. Like. Was

16:42

a quiet child, shy, smart.

16:45

Appreciative of life and anything that

16:47

comes her way. Prosthetic.

16:49

Ability. We were just seen what was

16:51

coming about from her. And quo.

16:54

Like. See loved sports including

16:56

basketball and volleyball but a

16:58

sibir it was softball. And.

17:01

Are free time She and her dad would

17:03

play catch and her family's backyard. And.

17:05

She loved every minute of it. Her

17:07

mother, Kimberly's said it was best

17:10

to honor Lexi by becoming the

17:12

best version of yourself. Sane quote.

17:14

Whatever. It is that you're struggling with

17:16

if you just try. As he

17:18

just give it your best. To. Me

17:21

that's honoring her. Because.

17:23

That was her personality. She always wanted to

17:25

be the best that she could be and

17:27

she would always hope others in the same

17:30

way. And quo. At. Like

17:32

sees funeral, her parents asked the attendees

17:34

to wear bright. Colors to match

17:36

her bright personality. Another.

17:39

Victim from room One Eleven was ten year

17:41

old. Jays Karma will move on us. Chase

17:43

was born on February second, two thousand and

17:46

twelve and he was the youngest of five

17:48

children. He lived only one block away from

17:50

Rob Elementary School and his house was known

17:53

as one of the favorite hangout spot of

17:55

the neighborhood. Kids six or seven children were

17:57

always in the backyard with jace rough housing.

18:00

In playing around his family said the Jays

18:02

was always doing little things to let them

18:04

know he loved them. He. Would leave

18:06

notes around the house that said i love

18:08

you and every single morning would start a

18:10

pot of coffee for his grandparents. On

18:12

the morning of the shooting, chases grandmother was

they heard about the shooting at the school

18:29

and it wasn't until around eleven Pm when

18:31

they learned that he was one of the

18:34

victims. His grandpa would later say.

18:36

I swear my wife is hurting so much because

18:38

he wanted to go to San Antonio. He was

18:40

so sad he couldn't go. Maybe. If

18:43

to do with her sisters was watch

tic toc videos and learn dances. She

23:15

so loved animals, especially her family dog

23:17

named Patricia. And she dreamed of

23:20

one day becoming a veterinarian. Annabel,

23:22

Was a smart pride and joy for

23:24

little girl who always excelled in school.

23:26

She also loved going to school, partly

23:28

because she got to see her new

23:30

boyfriend Xavier Lopez. The To had actually

23:32

been lifelong friends who always had a

23:34

crush on each other and once they

23:36

started dating the parents and that they

23:38

texted each other every night saying i

23:40

love you. Their parents would laugh and

23:43

ask how do ya know about love. Of

23:45

to see how much they cared for one another.

23:50

Annabel, We're proud to be on them The list. Animals.

24:01

Mom would later say I miss you so

24:03

24:05

us celebrating like we did every year with

24:07

our family. The final

24:09

24:11

it was ten year old Quincy Illinois

24:13

24:16

Was born on June tenth. two thousand

24:18

and twelve. And. She was described

24:20

as a free spirit who left

24:22

24:24

I sound was just so sweet.

24:26

But apparently Jackie and our family

24:28

went to a cemetery to visit

24:31

a loved one. And while they

24:33

were they are. Jackie saw an old man

24:35

sitting alone at his wife's. Graze.

24:37

So. She asked her mom and she could go

24:40

sit with him. And. Over the

24:42

next thirty minutes, Or so Jackie

24:44

notes by the old man, keeping

24:46

him company. During. An obviously

24:48

sad time in late. By.

24:51

The time the old man last he

24:53

was smiling. And that's the

24:55

kind of girl she was. Her.

24:57

Father Javier would later say quote she

24:59

was like any other nine year old

25:01

girl. Full. Of lies, laws

25:04

and happiness. She. Was

25:06

a firecracker. Shit. A

25:08

sparkling personality. very getting.

25:10

Big. Hearted. And. Quip. Jackie.

25:13

Also had big dreams for her life.

25:15

She. Wanted to be of that marianne. She.

25:18

Wanted to travel the world and go

25:20

to Paris. She. Also, one

25:22

of the Hof exactly six children.

25:24

And. She already had all of their names pick

25:27

out. Jackie. Was very

25:29

particular. And she always knew

25:31

exactly what she wanted. Winner.

25:33

First Communion was coming up. She wanted

25:36

to pick out the perfect. Dress.

25:39

After looking on Amazon, she ended up

25:41

finding the exact one she wanted. Know.

25:44

It was a little pricey, but her parents

25:46

decided to get it for her. And

25:48

less than one month later, It.

25:50

Would also be the dress they buried her and.

25:53

On the morning of the shooting, her parents

25:55

came to watch her at the award ceremony.

25:58

in her dad made sure to blow her a

26:00

kiss before she went back to class. That

26:03

would be the very last time he would ever

26:05

see his daughter alive. Jackie's

26:08

parents said they want people to remember her

26:10

by her caring spirit. She

26:12

always urged her parents to give money to

26:14

the homeless and to pick

26:17

up the restaurant bill when she saw people

26:19

dressed in their military uniforms. She

26:22

cared so much about everyone. Her

26:25

dad said, quote, Jackie was the

26:27

one that would go out of her way to

26:29

help anyone. It gives me comfort

26:31

that she would have done something to help

26:33

her classmates and that very

26:35

scary scenario. She touched a

26:37

lot of people just with her

26:39

hugs. You can tell

26:41

how much she loved somebody. That's

26:44

the one thing I don't want anyone to forget.

26:47

End quote. Now before we

26:49

get to the victims of room 112, we want

26:51

to take a second to talk about the teacher

26:53

of room 111, Mr.

26:56

Arnulfo Arnie Reyes. Arnie

26:58

had been a teacher at Rob Elementary for

27:00

seven years. He was known for his

27:02

sense of humor and his students loved joking around with

27:04

him. But Arnie didn't always want to be

27:06

a teacher. When he was younger, he dreamed

27:09

of becoming a lawyer. However, as time

27:11

went on, he discovered his love for children

27:13

and he knew that becoming a teacher would

27:15

be the perfect fit. And he was right.

27:18

Arnie was a great teacher who made a

27:20

huge difference in his students' lives. He made

27:22

school fun. When Rob Elementary

27:24

had themed school days, he always dressed up.

27:27

And on twin day, he even matched outfits with

27:29

some of his students. Before the

27:31

massacre at their school, Arnie would hold hands with

27:33

students as he walked them to the bus. He

27:36

would interrupt his lesson with a funny joke and

27:38

he always made sure every student was able to

27:40

order lunch every day. He loved

27:42

making a difference in the lives of his

27:44

students and was shown through his dedication inside

27:46

of room 111. Arnie

27:49

had 18 students total in his

27:51

class that year, but seven of them

27:54

would go home after the awards ceremony

27:56

that morning. Little Did they

27:58

know by doing so. They. Narrowly

28:01

escaped. does. That. Make

28:03

we mentioned in last week's episode

28:05

or nice classroom door had been

28:07

broken for several years and he

28:10

talked with the administration several times

28:12

about getting it fixed. But. It

28:14

was never done. Which. Clearly with

28:16

a deadly mistake. After

28:18

hearing the gunshots rang out in the hallway

28:21

that morning. Or any real

28:23

old is active shooter training. And.

28:25

Immediately ushered his kids to the corner

28:27

of the room. Under the

28:29

desks. It. Was something that they

28:31

had practice before. But. Looking back

28:33

on it. That. Actually made

28:35

being so much worse. By.

28:38

Putting the children all together in the

28:40

corner of the realm. Already.

28:42

Said that his students were basically sitting

28:44

ducks for the gunmen. After

28:46

getting saw it and the arm. The. Shooter

28:49

turned his attention to our knees.

28:51

eleven students. And he killed

28:53

every single one of them in the

28:55

right hand corner of his classroom. That.

28:58

Day was by far the worst day

29:00

of our nice life. Not.

29:02

Only did he witnessed his. Entire class

29:05

get murdered, But. He also

29:07

had to stay in the room with the

29:09

gunmen throughout the entire shooting. When.

29:11

Already learned all of the details,

29:13

he was furious about the officers

29:16

lack of action that day, saying

29:18

quote. There's. Really no

29:20

excuse for seventy seven minutes.

29:23

And quo. And. Believe it

29:25

or not, Or. Nice distant

29:27

cousin was actually Police Chief

29:29

Pete Area dhondup. Arnie.

29:31

Would later say quote. I

29:33

wish that he would have said. I'm. Gonna

29:36

go in there because that's my. Family.

29:38

But. He didn't. And. quo. Now.

29:41

After law enforcement took down the shooter

29:43

on he was carried into an ambulance

29:45

without being put on a stretcher. He

29:48

had been shot three times in the

29:50

arm and back. New. Is extremely

29:52

difficult for him to breeze. But.

29:55

After being put into an ambulance they put

29:57

a chest tube and. In. From

29:59

Bears my flight A to San

30:01

Antonio. Luckily. He would

30:03

end up surviving his injuries. The.

30:06

He had a long road of

30:08

recovery and surgeries ahead. However,

30:11

the physical wounds were nowhere

30:13

near as painful as his

30:15

emotional wounds. Arnie Re

30:17

as got a lot of criticism and the

30:19

days after the shooting. Many. People

30:22

wondered how see survived. When.

30:24

His classroom with children didn't. But

30:27

already did the best he could that day.

30:30

He followed active shooter. Protocol.

30:32

And. Even stood in front of his students when

30:35

the gunman came into the room. With.

30:37

The really wasn't much he could do

30:39

against someone with an A or fifteen.

30:42

And trust me, he didn't need the

30:45

public scrutiny when already found out his

30:47

entire class died that day, was overcome

30:49

with guilt. Who would later say parents

30:51

last one child, families last one child

30:53

but I lost eleven other for the

30:55

past year. The students were his wife,

30:58

they were like his kids in a

31:00

sense and after the shooting he constantly

31:02

found himself asking what s or could

31:04

have done differently. But at the end

31:06

of a day he has to remind

31:08

himself that he did what he could.

31:11

He also says that no amount. Of

31:13

training in the world will adequately prepare someone

31:15

for an active shooter. He says

31:17

the only way we can change this

31:19

is by changing the laws since the

31:21

shooting. Arnie often reflects on a students

31:23

and the potential they had. He says that

31:26

one of them may have one day found

31:28

the cured cancer and other may have been

31:30

president. For now we'll never know. As

31:32

or says, it'll spend the rest of

31:34

his nice making sure the victims didn't

31:36

die in vain. Or.

31:38

Any way. as has since spoken with

31:40

the media about how the police abandoned

31:42

them that day, He. Would later

31:44

tell A B C quote. After

31:47

everything I get more angry because

31:49

you have a bullet proof vest?

31:52

I had nothing. I.

31:54

Had no see. You. Were

31:56

supposed to per to teasers. There.

31:59

Is no excuse. For their actions that

32:01

day. And I will never forgive them.

32:03

I tell the parents I'm sorry. I

32:06

tried my best of what I was told to

32:08

do. Please. Don't be angry

32:10

with me. And. Quote.

32:13

But. The parents of you've all the held

32:15

no ill will towards Mr. Re as.

32:18

In. Fact: Once he made it home

32:20

from the hospital, a welcome home parade!

32:22

Was made for him. Where. People

32:24

and his community made signs and

32:26

honking their horns. Just. To

32:29

let him know that they were happy. She

32:31

was home. There's. A video

32:33

from this. Day where she's sitting in a

32:35

chair. And is all the

32:37

people drive by welcoming hen. A.

32:39

Woman who lost her daughter in

32:41

his classroom comes over. And

32:43

gives him a hot. And. As soon

32:45

as she dies, the both just start

32:48

sobbing and each other's arms. It

32:50

was her way of telling him you

32:52

love you, were here for you. And

32:55

we don't blame you. Which. Is

32:57

exactly what he needed to hear. Today.

33:01

Arnie. Re As is still recovering

33:03

from his injuries. But. The

33:05

support of his community is what gets

33:07

him through. He would later say

33:10

quote. I'm here. A.

33:12

Lot of it that's getting me forward. And all

33:14

of this. Is. The love that I'm

33:16

getting from my community. The. Love

33:18

that I get for my family. In.

33:20

The thought that I want to make things

33:22

happen for my students so that they wouldn't

33:25

die in vain. And quo. Back.

33:28

At Rob Elementary on May Twenty

33:30

Fourth, Two Thousand and Twenty Two,

33:32

the de facto corner melodious Junior

33:34

had just finished identifying the eleven

33:36

victims out of room eleven. Had

33:39

just finished identifying the eleven victims of

33:41

Room One Eleven. And now was

33:43

time for Room One Twelve. One.

33:45

Of the to see students located in this

33:47

room was ten year old Amri Joe Garza.

33:50

She was born on May tenth, two thousand

33:52

and twelve and I just a few weeks

33:54

after tenth birthday. Emery. Was described

33:56

as a diva with a heart of gold.

33:59

She enjoyed spending. With her younger brother,

34:01

three year old Zane. And

34:03

every morning before she left for schools

34:05

should kiss him goodbye. During. The

34:07

Shooting: Amri died after trying to call nine

34:10

one one on her cellphone. The. Shooter

34:12

overheard her, walked in the room

34:14

and shudder. While. The police

34:16

were right outside. Emrys. Father Angel

34:19

said. My. Little Love is now

34:21

flying high with the angels above. Please don't

34:23

take a second for granted. Hug your family.

34:25

Tell them you love them. I love

34:27

you Amri Joe! Watch. Over your baby

34:29

brother for me. Emrys best

34:31

friend Chloe who survived the shooting would

34:33

tell reporters at the moment the gunman

34:35

entered the classroom amri comfort in other

34:38

students by telling them it was going

34:40

to be okay. So. When or last

34:42

moments she was thinking of others. Amri

34:45

dreamed of one day becoming an art teacher.

34:47

However, that dream was savagely taken

34:49

from her. Her. Mother would later

34:51

write on social media. He. Did not

34:53

deserve this. My sweet baby girl. Mommy.

34:56

Needs you. Emery. I can't

Her body had been so mutilated in

45:50

victims We want to talk about our the Teachers

of Room One Twelve. Starting with

45:54

forty four year old, even more. Evil

45:57

was born on March seventeenth. Nineteen Seventy

her mom and two sisters would relocate

46:10

to Eagle Pass. And that's where

46:12

she would meet her future husband, Rubin Ruiz.

46:15

Now. Growing up, Evil was known to

46:17

be quiet and shy, but also extremely studious

46:19

during your school years. She had a small

46:21

close knit group of friends, and her mother

46:56

soon enough evil was pregnant with their

46:58

daughter Analysts. Now. Evil was

47:00

a very dedicated woman who was bouncing

47:02

being a new mom and getting her

47:04

degree. Eventually seen Ruben would

47:06

move back to evolve the to get

47:09

closer with family and it's there were

47:11

She continued her education at South West

47:13

Texas Junior College and So Roster University.

47:16

Either. Absolutely love children, so becoming a

hiking, biking, running and crossing competitions.

47:26

But her family said that as

47:29

she grew older, the once shy,

47:31

reserved girl had blossomed into an

47:33

independent, an outgoing woman. Throughout.

47:35

Her many years as an educator and you've

47:37

All The Evil was an advocate for her

47:39

students and she always encourage them. And. They

47:41

absolutely loved her. Her daughter said when they

47:43

would go out and you've already students would

47:45

come running up to give her a hot

47:47

shower. So said her mom always wanted to

47:50

make sure that are students were happy and

47:52

taken care of. She was dedicated to her

47:54

job, she was strong, I just

47:56

really hope to be exactly like her. On

47:58

the day of the shooting. Dot around and got

48:01

the call about an active shooter, but she

48:03

said. I wasn't really freaking out about

48:37

I love you so much. And

48:39

that's the last thing I sent her before I found out

48:41

she didn't make it. As we mentioned

48:43

in last week's episode, even Morales was alive

48:46

for the majority of the shooting, and according

48:48

to the surviving victims of Room One Twelve,

48:50

my last thing she said before she died

48:52

was that she wanted to speak to her

48:54

48:57

And of them would later say. It's hard

Have to miss my mom longer than I've known her.

49:08

I saw of the rest of my life and how

49:10

49:12

something that we found was haunting was at

could to protect them. And

52:40

when the coroner walked into their classroom that

52:42

day, Irma's body was

52:44

found cradling some of her students.

52:47

When her family found out that she was

52:50

one of the victims of this massacre, they

52:52

were devastated, to say the least. Two

52:56

days after the shooting, videos showed

52:58

her husband Joe arriving at Rob

53:00

Elementary to drop off a

53:02

bouquet of flowers for the memorial that had

53:05

been set up. On the

53:07

look on his face was heartbreaking.

53:10

After dropping the flowers off, Joe

53:12

would go back to his house, sit

53:15

down on the couch, and then right

53:17

then, two days after his

53:19

wife's death, he would die of a

53:21

heart attack. Family members

53:23

would later say that Joe was so

53:25

distraught over his wife's death, he

53:28

died of a broken heart, which

53:30

is yet another horrific part of

53:32

this story. The official death

53:35

count from the Yuvalde massacre is

53:37

21 victims. But for

53:39

the Garcia family, they believe it's

53:42

22. Sadly,

53:44

their four children lost both parents

53:46

in less than a week. Irma

53:50

and Joe's love story was unlike any

53:52

other. They were high school

53:54

sweethearts. He carried around that piece

53:57

of paper from Irma for 30 years. and

54:00

their children said that nothing could have ever

54:02

broken their love apart. Their

54:05

youngest daughter said that if she could have one

54:07

more moment with her parents, she

54:09

would tell them that she was sorry for what happened.

54:12

She said she would also give them one

54:14

last big hug. After

54:17

all of the victims of the Uvalde

54:19

school shooting were identified, the

54:21

world began to hear their names. They

54:24

began to see their pictures. And

54:26

once again, we were reminded of

54:28

the evil in this world. How

54:31

could anyone walk into an elementary

54:33

school and kill innocent children?

54:36

And how can we as a nation allow

54:38

this to keep happening? Soon

54:40

enough, politicians were going to have to

54:43

answer these questions. Hours

54:45

after the massacre, President Joe Biden

54:47

addressed the nation with this message.

54:50

Good evening, fellow Americans. I

54:56

had hoped when

54:58

I became president, I would not have to do

55:01

this again. Another

55:05

massacre, Uvalde,

55:07

Texas, an

55:11

elementary school, beautiful,

55:15

innocent, second,

55:17

third, fourth graders. And

55:21

how many scores of little

55:23

children who witness what happened

55:30

see their friends die as if they're in a

55:32

battlefield, for God's sake. They'll

55:38

live the rest of their lives. There's

55:42

a lot we don't know yet. There's

55:44

a lot we do know. There's a lot we do know.

55:48

The parents who will never see

55:50

their child again, never

55:54

have them jump in bed and cuddle with them. Parents

56:00

will never be the same. To

56:05

lose a child is like

56:08

having a piece of your soul ripped away.

56:15

There's a hollowness in your chest, you feel like

56:17

you're being sucked into it. You're

56:20

never going to be able to get out suffocating.

56:26

It's never quite the same. There's

56:30

a feeling shared by the siblings and the

56:33

grandparents and the family members and the community

56:35

that's up behind. As

56:39

a nation we have to

56:41

ask, when in God's name

56:43

are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?

56:47

When in God's name we

56:49

do what we all know in our gut needs to be

56:51

done? This

56:55

is the 3,448 days,

56:58

10 years since I

57:01

stood up at a high school

57:03

in Connecticut, a grade school in Connecticut, where

57:07

another government massacred 26 people,

57:09

including 20 first graders at Sandy

57:11

Hook Elementary School. Since

57:14

then there have been over

57:17

900 incidents of

57:19

gunfire reported on school grounds. Marjory

57:23

Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland,

57:25

Florida, Santa

57:27

Fe High School in Texas, Oxford

57:30

High School in Michigan. The

57:32

list goes on and on and the list grows when

57:35

it includes mass shootings at places like

57:37

movie theaters, houses of worship. As

57:40

we saw just 10 days ago at a

57:42

grocery store in Buffalo, New York, I

57:46

am sick and tired of it. We

57:49

have to act. And

57:52

don't tell me we can't have

57:54

an impact on this carnage. Governor

57:57

Greg Abbott also addressed Texans with

57:59

this message. For. The

58:01

reality is as horrible as.

58:04

What? Happened. It

58:07

could have been worse. The.

58:10

Reason it was not worse. As.

58:13

Because. Law. Enforcement

58:15

officials. Did.

58:18

What they do. They.

58:21

Showed. Amazing

58:23

courage. By

58:25

running toward done far.

58:28

For. The singular purpose of trying

58:30

to save lives. include

58:33

has been worse he said.

58:36

I remember hearing this back and

58:38

Twenty Twenty Two and I was

58:41

just filled with rage. Regardless,

58:43

Of your political stance, it

58:45

is incredibly insensitive to see.

58:48

It could have been worse. When.

58:50

Nineteen children. Into teachers

58:52

were slaughtered in their elementary

58:54

school. I'm. Sorry, but there

58:56

is quite literally nothing worse than

58:59

that. Abbott. Also commands

59:01

the you've all the police officers.

59:04

Saying. That they ran towards the

59:06

gunfire to save lives. When. That's

59:08

not at all what happened. In.

59:11

Reality, The officers on seen waited around

59:13

and the whole way for over an

59:15

hour. While. Ten and eleven

59:17

year olds were being murdered while

59:20

some of the victims were bleeding

59:22

out in likely died as a

59:24

result of their inaction. So

59:26

no. It couldn't have been

59:28

years. If the police would have

59:30

done their jobs that day. Less people

59:33

would have died. It would

59:35

have been better. And soon

59:37

enough, the entire nice and was about

59:39

to learn the horrific details of the

59:41

police response that day. When.

59:44

The Nation learned that it took seventy

59:46

seven minutes from please to breach the

59:48

classrooms. While children were inside pleading for

59:50

help, The nation was disgusted. And. Even

59:52

more so when video came out showing

59:55

officer standing in the hallway on their

59:57

cell phones, others using hand sanitizer. oh

1:00:00

children were dying just feet

1:00:02

away. Now, initially,

1:00:04

of course, the Yvoldi

1:00:06

police didn't want to admit any

1:00:08

wrongdoing. In fact, during

1:00:10

a press conference, Steven McGraw

1:00:13

from the Texas Department of

1:00:15

Public Safety adamantly defended his

1:00:17

department, saying this. I

1:00:20

can tell you this right now. DPS is

1:00:22

an institution, okay? Right

1:00:25

now, it did not fail

1:00:27

the community. It's plain simple. Steven

1:00:31

McGraw also placed blame on

1:00:33

speech therapist Amy Marine. If

1:00:36

you remember, she was the teacher who ran

1:00:38

out of the school after she heard the

1:00:40

crash. Video from that day

1:00:42

shows that she had propped open the door

1:00:44

with a rock. But when she

1:00:46

saw the gunman, she ran back

1:00:49

inside, and video shows her kick the

1:00:51

rock out of the way before shutting

1:00:53

the door. Now, like

1:00:55

we mentioned, that door was supposed

1:00:57

to lock automatically, but it didn't.

1:01:00

So that would be the school's fault, not

1:01:03

Amy's. However, during

1:01:05

the initial press conference, Steven

1:01:08

McGraw basically told the media that she

1:01:10

was the reason the gunman got into

1:01:12

the school. Bottom line is,

1:01:14

we reported what happened. That

1:01:16

back door was propped open. It wasn't supposed to be propped

1:01:18

open. It was supposed to be locked. And

1:01:21

certainly the teacher that went back for her

1:01:23

cell phone, it propped it open again. So

1:01:25

that was an access point that the subject

1:01:27

used. As you can imagine,

1:01:29

when Amy heard this, she was devastated.

1:01:31

Not only were the claims completely false,

1:01:33

but now her community was partially blaming

1:01:35

her for what happened. Now,

1:01:38

officials would later correct this by saying that

1:01:40

the door was not propped open, like they

1:01:42

initially said. But by then, Amy felt like

1:01:44

the damage had already been done. She

1:01:47

was considered a villain in her own community. She

1:01:49

now suffers from severe anxiety and depression,

1:01:52

and even developed a stutter after everything

1:01:54

happened. But After the truth came

1:01:56

out, she received an outpouring of love and support

1:01:58

from people all over the nation. And

1:02:00

she was happy to have her name cleared. Now.

1:02:03

The you go D C I S T Police.

1:02:05

Officers had been trained for an

1:02:07

active shooter scenario by the alerts

1:02:09

Center which is described by the

1:02:11

F B. I asked a national

1:02:13

standard an active shooter response. Training.

1:02:16

And I'm going to give you a

1:02:18

little cliff notes on at what exactly

1:02:20

does officers were taught to do during

1:02:23

an active shooting. In. The very

1:02:25

first step is to establish an incident.

1:02:27

Commander. Who would be the

1:02:29

person in charge that day? In

1:02:31

this case, That. Person was

1:02:33

supposed to be Police Chief Pete

1:02:35

Area dando. But. Like we mentioned,

1:02:38

They. Never established an incident

1:02:40

commander throughout the entire shooting.

1:02:43

Which. Is why there was so much

1:02:46

miscommunication. Police. Chief Pete era.

1:02:48

Dell would later respond to this

1:02:50

st. While. You're in there. You

1:02:52

don't title yourself. And or Policy

1:02:54

States or the incident commander. My approach

1:02:56

and thought was responding as a police

1:02:59

officer and so I didn't title myself.

1:03:01

According to the alert. Training after.

1:03:04

You've established an incident commander.

1:03:06

The. Next step is to quote stop

1:03:09

the Killing and instead the dying.

1:03:11

Former. Contact team and make

1:03:13

entry. And quo. This.

1:03:16

Next part is very important and

1:03:18

it says quote. Enter. So

1:03:20

low as backup is not immediately

1:03:22

available in, there is evidence of

1:03:24

an active Kelly. News

1:03:26

tactically and quickly to locate and

1:03:29

eliminate the threat. Once.

1:03:31

The a threat is eliminated. Provide

1:03:33

medical care to the critically wounded.

1:03:35

And quo. Now. The police claim

1:03:37

that they didn't enter right away because

1:03:40

they thought the shooter was barricaded in.

1:03:42

A room by himself? But. Then

1:03:44

they learn that children were indeed

1:03:46

in the classroom and that many

1:03:48

people had been shaft. And

1:03:50

Chloe Torres as Nine One One Call She

1:03:53

said she was in Room One Twelve. And.

1:03:55

There were a lot of bodies so.

1:03:57

They knew there were victims in the

1:03:59

room with the gunmen. To:

1:04:02

After figuring this out according to

1:04:04

their training, they were supposed to

1:04:06

immediately go in and take down

1:04:08

the shooter. Even. His

1:04:10

back up hadn't arrived. But.

1:04:13

They didn't do this. They. Waited

1:04:15

around like cowards. Now.

1:04:18

The next excuse they gave as to why

1:04:20

they didn't breached the classrooms was because they

1:04:22

said they were waiting around on a key.

1:04:25

So. They could unlock the classroom door.

1:04:27

Now. The police didn't know this at

1:04:30

the time because they never checked. But.

1:04:32

The classroom door was already

1:04:34

unlocked. But. Even if it was

1:04:36

in. The alert training says

1:04:39

that any event the key is not

1:04:41

located to quote. Law. Enforcement,

1:04:43

respond or should use another technique

1:04:45

to enter the area without delay.

1:04:48

And. Quote. But. Again, they

1:04:50

didn't do this. She's.

1:04:53

Aerodyne though would later say this.

1:04:56

Or. New Those doors was doors open our

1:04:58

they're sick heavy doors with a metal

1:05:00

frame as police officers used to going

1:05:02

to a residence and he sick endorse

1:05:04

that's just such a common thing in

1:05:06

our business is another option here. But.

1:05:09

Again, the door to Room One

1:05:11

Eleven wasn't even locked. So.

1:05:14

They spend over an hour trying

1:05:16

to find sees for an unlocked

1:05:18

door. What? A waste of

1:05:20

time. Even. Further, No

1:05:22

one even attempted to contact the

1:05:24

principal. Over. The head janitor who

1:05:27

had a master T. They.

1:05:29

Also could have gained entry to the

1:05:31

classroom through the window. But

1:05:33

instead of doing any of that, Aegis.

1:05:36

Waited around for seventy seven

1:05:38

minutes or children died. Philo.

1:05:41

B C I S T Police

1:05:43

Department hosted several active shooter trainings.

1:05:46

The. Most recent being on March twenty

1:05:48

second, Two. Two months before

1:05:51

the massacre, In a ceaseless

1:05:53

post the you've all the school district

1:05:55

said quote or overall goal is to

1:05:57

train every you will be area alone

1:05:59

for. When officer so that we

1:06:02

can prepare as best as possible

1:06:04

for any situation that may arise.

1:06:07

And. quo. Would. Clearly they

1:06:09

weren't prepared. And on

1:06:11

not de. De. Vaul. The police

1:06:13

officers ignored all protocol that they were

1:06:16

taught and their. Training. Yet.

1:06:18

Still, In the days

1:06:20

after the massacre at they refuse

1:06:23

to admit any wrongdoing. However,

1:06:25

soon enough detail slowly started

1:06:27

to come out. And. They

1:06:30

began to face a lot of scrutiny.

1:06:32

It. Wouldn't be until three days

1:06:34

after the shooting when they finally

1:06:36

admitted their fault. Steven

1:06:39

Mcgraw would later say from the benefit of

1:06:41

hindsight where I'm sitting are now of course

1:06:43

it was not the right decision. It.

1:06:46

Was the wrong decision? Period. There's no excuse

1:06:48

for that. In. Response to not

1:06:50

breaching the classrooms He said. When.

1:06:52

It comes to an active shooter, you don't

1:06:54

have to wait on tactical gear, plain and

1:06:57

simple. At. The end of the

1:06:59

day. No. One could understand for

1:07:01

nearly four hundred police officers were

1:07:03

on scene that day. And.

1:07:05

Not one of them decided to

1:07:07

go into those classrooms. And

1:07:09

look, I have all the respect in

1:07:12

the world for law enforcement and so

1:07:14

thing for that. We have members of

1:07:16

our society that put their lives on

1:07:18

the line every single day to keep

1:07:20

our community since it's a job that

1:07:23

I could never do. I

1:07:25

also understand that these officers have

1:07:27

their own families. The. You

1:07:29

win or lose their lives. And. Running

1:07:32

toward someone with any are fifteen

1:07:34

goes against every instinct within a.

1:07:37

Good. At the end of the day. That's

1:07:39

the job he signed up for in

1:07:41

if you are not willing to take

1:07:43

action and these types of scenarios. Didn't.

1:07:46

Do Not Sign Up To be a

1:07:48

police Officer. I. Also understand that

1:07:50

there is a chain of command they

1:07:52

had to follow that day and as

1:07:54

a cop, you have to follow orders.

1:07:57

But. Sometimes you also have to make a

1:07:59

judgment call. There. Were so

1:08:01

many officers heard on body cam

1:08:03

footage saying things like. Why?

1:08:06

Are we going in there? Were taking

1:08:08

too long. Kids are dying. It's

1:08:10

shocking to me that not one

1:08:13

single officer said, screw this, give

1:08:15

me a rifle and going in

1:08:17

there. Like. We mentioned in

1:08:19

last week's episode, I guarantee you

1:08:21

every single one of those parents

1:08:24

waiting outside of Rob Elementary would

1:08:26

have gone into those classrooms without

1:08:28

hesitation. Strangers.

1:08:30

Who didn't even have children at the school

1:08:32

would have done the same. So

1:08:35

why did the police not have the

1:08:37

same attitude? To. This day,

1:08:39

many officers still stick to their story

1:08:41

that they were under the impression that

1:08:44

it was a barricaded subject. And

1:08:46

not an active shooter. However, N.

1:08:48

Chloe Tore is nine. One one

1:08:51

call she said there's a lot of

1:08:53

body. For. Poll also proved

1:08:55

that many as not all of

1:08:57

the officers were aware that the

1:09:00

gunman was in a classroom full

1:09:02

of teachers and students. And.

1:09:04

It is believed that their inaction that

1:09:06

day it led to the death of

1:09:08

at least for victim. Jack.

1:09:11

Teachers are as Exuviae

1:09:13

Lopez Hoses. Was an

1:09:15

teacher. A the morale as all

1:09:18

had heart beats. When. They were

1:09:20

pulled out of those classrooms. All.

1:09:22

Four were also saw it within the

1:09:24

first few minutes of the shooting. Meaning.

1:09:27

They held on to love for over

1:09:29

an hour. Until they couldn't

1:09:31

anymore. It's. Horrifying to think

1:09:33

about how they would still likely be

1:09:35

here today is the police would have

1:09:37

done their job. And

1:09:40

Texas House of Representatives Investigative

1:09:42

Committee would later say quote.

1:09:44

At Rob Elementary law Enforcement Responders

1:09:46

sale to adhere to their active

1:09:49

shooter training. And he

1:09:51

failed to prioritize saving innocent

1:09:53

lives. Over. Their own

1:09:55

safety. And. quo. And

1:09:57

to make matters worse, the city of you. The

1:10:00

tried extremely hard to prevent the police

1:10:02

records and surveillance camera footage from being

1:10:04

released to the public. Also remember that

1:10:06

mom who ran into the school to

1:10:08

grab her children the one who the

1:10:11

police hand cost outside of Rob Elementary.

1:10:13

While she was actually on probation for some

1:10:15

be seated years back, she was also very

1:10:18

vocal about the police in that day and

1:10:20

a couple days after the shooting, she got

1:10:22

a call from law enforcement telling her that

1:10:24

if she keeps talking to the media though,

1:10:26

arrest her for obstruction of justice. Now.

1:10:29

A judge would later hear this and

1:10:31

he actually rewarded her bravery and shortened

1:10:33

her probation. As you can see. Evolve.

1:10:35

The officials were trying really hard to

1:10:38

keep things in the dark. They also

1:10:40

knew that their actions that they would

1:10:42

receive heavy criticism and did. Their

1:10:45

community, along with the rest of the

1:10:47

nation was outraged, especially because Police Chief

1:10:49

P. Aired Nando had just been elected

1:10:51

to the City council and the citizens

1:10:53

of You Baldy wanted him to step

1:10:55

down. Soon. After the shooting protesters

1:10:57

took the streets. were signs that read.

1:11:00

Bravery. Called in once it's badge back.

1:11:02

Protect. And serve who yourself. Why

1:11:04

are you hiding? Release the body

1:11:06

cam footage. Their blood is on

1:11:08

Pieds hands. The. Cowardice of a

1:11:10

few cost the lives of many. Years

1:11:13

Bread Cross who was protesting for his

1:11:15

nephew use I a Garcia. Is.

1:11:18

He felt our community a just felt a

1:11:20

saw and he needs to go. A

1:11:23

just felt us off and he needs

1:11:25

to go. The pete wouldn't be fired

1:11:27

immediately. In. Fact: the City of you've

1:11:29

all the announced that they were considering putting

1:11:31

him on a leave of absence. The usually

1:11:33

that means it's a paid leave. The citizens

1:11:35

of you've all the weren't happy with that

1:11:38

evolved D C I S D would have

1:11:40

a school board meeting were members of the

1:11:42

community could share their thoughts. And here's what

1:11:44

Caitlin Gonzalez had to say. My

1:11:54

says he says I'm a twenty four. He

1:12:03

around. The

1:12:12

you just brings tears to my

1:12:15

eyes every single time. And what

1:12:17

a brave little girl! for speaking

1:12:19

out. Now. P would

1:12:21

eventually get fired and August of

1:12:24

Twenty Twenty Two. And a

1:12:26

later interview, he would admit that when they

1:12:28

first arrived on scene. He could

1:12:30

hear gunshots and the gunmen reloading

1:12:32

behind the door. And instead

1:12:34

of acting, he quote backed

1:12:37

off and started taking cover.

1:12:40

Is that it is nice unexpected

1:12:42

there are issued I firmly believe

1:12:44

there. I know

1:12:46

the yard or he had. Based

1:12:48

on his shows I saw the

1:12:50

schools in the wall and are

1:12:52

invested his arsenal. As to the

1:12:54

server around there's that word and

1:12:56

images for episodes the ones I

1:12:58

know where immediate threat and the

1:13:00

preservation of us around. everything around

1:13:02

him I saw was prayers. P.

1:13:05

Era Donda would eventually admit that this

1:13:07

was a fatal mistake. However, his attorney

1:13:09

would tell the media that they believed

1:13:11

he was a fall guy and said

1:13:13

the shooters the only real person to

1:13:15

blame here. Now. The news of

1:13:18

Peter dawn of getting fired was a

1:13:20

relief to many, however some couldn't understand

1:13:22

why took nearly three months to do

1:13:24

so. And. Pete wasn't the only person

1:13:26

who lost his job. And. Total

1:13:28

five police officers were fired are forced

1:13:30

to resign, including a woman named Crimson

1:13:32

Elizondo who was one of the first

1:13:34

responding officers that day. She was overheard

1:13:37

on body cam footage saying if my

1:13:39

son had been in there are would

1:13:41

not have been outside. I promise you

1:13:43

that. Many people.

1:13:45

And you salty were surprised that

1:13:47

more officers were fired. There were

1:13:49

plenty of others who sailed to

1:13:51

take action. By. A

1:13:53

still work for law enforcement to this

1:13:55

day. Brat. Cross Udaya

1:13:58

Garcia's uncles. That quote.

1:14:00

Anyone. Who knew and sat there and

1:14:03

listened to him reload. They. Should

1:14:05

all lose their jobs. Anybody.

1:14:07

Who made in order that they shouldn't

1:14:09

go in should cease possible jail time.

1:14:12

And. Coil. It savior

1:14:14

Lopez was another murder victim. And.

1:14:17

His mom Felicia told the Washington

1:14:19

Post. That she's still sees many

1:14:21

of these officers out in public. They.

1:14:24

Shop at the same grocery stores,

1:14:26

Some or on pires for

1:14:28

softball games. And others

1:14:31

are neighbors. But. She said

1:14:33

quote. When. We see them. They put

1:14:35

their heads down. They. Know they

1:14:37

did wrong. And wish they could

1:14:39

go back and do it over again. And.

1:14:42

quo. For liter actually

1:14:44

had family members who responded to

1:14:46

the shooting. including. Officer

1:14:48

Daniel Core, an auto who we mentioned

1:14:50

a lot in part to. But.

1:14:52

After the shooting they have

1:14:54

no communication. She. Would later

1:14:56

say quote. They. Try to say

1:14:58

hi but I want nothing to do with

1:15:01

them. And quo. The

1:15:03

police and action caused a huge

1:15:05

risk within their community. A

1:15:08

risk that will take a while to repair.

1:15:10

But. The police aren't the only ones

1:15:13

who see scrutiny. Another. Person

1:15:15

that got a lot of criticism

1:15:17

was robbed elementary. Principal Mandy

1:15:20

Gutierrez. Like. We

1:15:22

mentioned or any way, as the teacher

1:15:24

of Room One Eleven said that he

1:15:26

had complained several times about how his

1:15:28

classroom door didn't lock. But. It

1:15:31

never got fixed. Now. Mandy do

1:15:33

to your as claimed that his lock was

1:15:35

steaks the night before the shooting. With.

1:15:38

Clearly that wasn't the case since

1:15:40

it wasn't working hours later. And

1:15:43

according to teachers and parents. It.

1:15:45

Was unknown being that Rob Elementary

1:15:48

was not very secure. Although.

1:15:50

The doors were always supposed to be

1:15:52

locked. Many. People said they

1:15:54

could easily get into the building

1:15:56

through on locked doors without anyone

1:15:59

even noticing. Several parents

1:16:01

even brought these concerns to the

1:16:03

principle. But. Nothing was ever done.

1:16:06

In. A nice day and age

1:16:08

that is incredibly irresponsible. There.

1:16:11

Are a lot of things wrong with

1:16:13

the frequency of mass shootings? There.

1:16:15

Is absolutely no excuse as

1:16:17

to why schools shouldn't be

1:16:19

following protocol. Unlocking. Their

1:16:22

doors. Know. Even further and

1:16:24

I'm not saying this is me

1:16:26

undies fault, but. Because. The

1:16:28

school had really poor why fi. The.

1:16:30

Alert that she sent out about the

1:16:33

active shooter. Didn't get to the

1:16:35

teachers and time. In. Fact: Arnie

1:16:37

Re as never got the alert.

1:16:39

So. See in his class literally

1:16:42

had seconds to prepare. The

1:16:44

Texas House of Representatives Investigative Committee

1:16:46

would later say that there were

1:16:49

quote. Systematic. Failures.

1:16:51

And. Agreed years poor decision making by

1:16:53

everyone involved to is in a position

1:16:56

of power. And quo. They

1:16:59

also said quote Rob Elementary did

1:17:01

not adequately prepare for the risk

1:17:03

of an armed intruder on campus.

1:17:06

And. quo. For. Example.

1:17:09

The. Teachers were instructed to put their

1:17:11

children under their desks is an

1:17:13

intruder came in. However,

1:17:15

this doesn't make a lot of

1:17:17

sense because you can still see

1:17:19

the children under their desks. Is.

1:17:21

The shooter where to look through the window

1:17:24

of the classroom door. Getting. Under

1:17:26

your desk is something you do

1:17:28

in a tornado were an earthquake,

1:17:31

Not. A school shooting. So.

1:17:33

That means that the teachers and

1:17:35

students didn't even have the correct

1:17:37

training for an active shooters scenario.

1:17:40

Principal. Mandy Gutierrez would be suspended with

1:17:42

pay from her position that rob and then

1:17:44

later reassigned to another position within the wall

1:17:47

D C I S T. She would also

1:17:49

face a lot of criticism on how safety

1:17:51

was handled inside the building where she disagreed

1:17:53

with what others had to say about her.

1:17:56

and a later interview she said i live with

1:17:58

the horror of these of for the rest

1:18:00

of my life. I want to keep my

1:18:02

job not only so that I can provide for

1:18:05

my family, but so that I can continue to

1:18:07

be on the front lines helping children who survived,

1:18:09

the families of all affected, and the entire Uvalde

1:18:11

community that I love and want to continue

1:18:13

to protect." It was also discovered

1:18:16

that there was a flawed medical response at the

1:18:18

scene as well. Like we mentioned last

1:18:20

week, some of the injured students were put

1:18:22

on school buses instead of ambulances. A.J.

1:18:25

Martinez, who was a survivor of room

1:18:27

112, was shot in the leg. When

1:18:29

his parents saw him come out of the school

1:18:31

covered in blood, they tried to go over to

1:18:33

him, but the police wouldn't let them, and then

1:18:36

they watched as their injured son got onto a

1:18:38

school bus. The police would later tell them

1:18:40

that the ambulances were reserved for deceased

1:18:42

children, which doesn't make any sense. As

1:18:45

all these details came to light, it

1:18:48

became very clear that the town

1:18:50

of Uvalde was not prepared for

1:18:52

a mass shooting. The police weren't

1:18:54

prepared, the schools weren't prepared, no

1:18:57

one was prepared. And like

1:18:59

we say all the time, there's always

1:19:01

this collective thought that this kind of

1:19:03

stuff won't happen to you. It's

1:19:06

the kind of stuff you see on the news,

1:19:08

but it doesn't happen in places

1:19:10

like Uvalde. But then it does

1:19:12

happen, and it tears through

1:19:15

a community in so many ways.

1:19:18

On May 26th, Uvalde's

1:19:20

newspaper, the Uvalde News

1:19:22

Leader, published a powerful article

1:19:24

titled, City Soul Crushed.

1:19:27

The high school graduation ceremony that was

1:19:29

set to take place on Friday,

1:19:32

May 27th, was postponed.

1:19:35

And the Uvalde CSD school

1:19:37

superintendent, Hall Harrell, said, My

1:19:40

heart is broken today. We are

1:19:42

a small community, and we are going to

1:19:45

need your prayers to get through this. In

1:19:49

the days after the shooting, the entire

1:19:51

nation grieved with Uvalde. It

1:19:54

was a horrific minder of the evils

1:19:56

that walk this earth. However,

1:19:59

in the midst of a This tragedy, anger and

1:20:01

heartbreak, the turn of you, Baldy

1:20:03

came together like never before. At

1:20:05

Rob Elementary, twenty one white crosses were placed

1:20:08

at the front of the school, each bearing

1:20:10

the name of a victim who died there.

1:20:12

Are only crosses were hundreds and

1:20:15

hundreds of flowers, stuffed animals, pictures,

1:20:17

candles and balloons. And. In front

1:20:19

of the memorial written in shock. Are

1:20:22

the words protect our children? There.

1:20:24

Were also prayer circles, food drives, fundraisers,

1:20:26

and millions of dollars raised in Go

1:20:28

Fund Me for the victim's families. After

1:20:31

the shooting, people from all over America

1:20:33

came by the small town to pay

1:20:35

their respects and the phrase you Baldy

1:20:37

Strong was everywhere. To. The funeral

1:20:39

homes in town also decided to cover

1:20:41

the cost of all the victims' funerals

1:20:44

and over the course of the next

1:20:46

few weeks a dark, somber cloud on

1:20:48

over you've already as the children and

1:20:50

teachers were laid to rest. Father.

1:20:52

And Bardo Morales of Sacred Heart Catholic

1:20:54

Church one of the families to remember

1:20:56

and celebrate the lives of each person.

1:20:58

He. Said. You. Will hear me

1:21:00

say that every funeral mass that I

1:21:02

hope they're tears of sadness will become

1:21:05

tears of joy. That. They remember

1:21:07

their children and allow them to continue to

1:21:09

live. Because if you're only coming to celebrate

1:21:11

it does, You're never going to find happiness.

1:21:14

We're. Here to celebrate their life. Soon

1:21:17

enough, all twenty one victims were

1:21:19

laid to rest. But. There's always

1:21:21

this hello nice after you bury the

1:21:23

left one. It seems as though

1:21:25

the rest of the world moves on with their

1:21:28

lies. And you're still completely

1:21:30

broken. Many. Of the

1:21:32

victim's families went through all the

1:21:34

emotions. In Wednesday came to

1:21:36

terms with their new reality. The

1:21:38

were angry. How could someone

1:21:41

within their own community cause this

1:21:43

much damage? Soon enough, details

1:21:45

of the time men started to come

1:21:47

to light as well. In. His

1:21:49

if this story couldn't get any more. Heartbreaking.

1:21:52

They learn that eighteen year old.

1:21:54

Salvador Ramos checked all of

1:21:56

the warning signs. He. abused

1:21:59

animals threatened to

1:22:01

rape and murder people online. And

1:22:04

he told multiple people across

1:22:06

many social media platforms that

1:22:09

he was gearing up for something big. The

1:22:12

people that knew him called him a

1:22:14

school shooter before the massacre even happened.

1:22:17

And he even told his friends the

1:22:19

exact date for when he would quote,

1:22:22

be famous, which is

1:22:24

yet another horrific part of this story.

1:22:27

So many people saw these concerning

1:22:29

behaviors and no one

1:22:32

said anything, which is

1:22:34

sadly the case for a lot of

1:22:36

school shootings. According to

1:22:38

the Sandy Hook promise.org, quote,

1:22:42

in four out of five school shootings,

1:22:44

at least one other person had

1:22:46

knowledge of the attacker's plan but

1:22:48

failed to report it. It

1:22:51

also says, quote, almost all

1:22:53

school shooters shared threatening or

1:22:55

concerning messages or images. More

1:22:58

than 75% raised concern from others prior

1:23:02

to the attack. Bystanders saw

1:23:04

warning signs in most documented

1:23:06

active shooter cases, end

1:23:09

quote. This is especially

1:23:11

heartbreaking because it means

1:23:13

it can all be prevented. If

1:23:16

you hear a disturbed individual talking

1:23:18

about gearing up for something big

1:23:21

or making concerning threats online,

1:23:24

please say something. If

1:23:27

all of the people who were concerned about

1:23:29

Salvador's behavior said something to the police, this

1:23:32

could have been prevented, but

1:23:35

it wasn't. After shooting

1:23:37

his grandma in the face that day, she

1:23:40

would actually somehow walk over to her

1:23:42

neighbor's house and call for

1:23:44

help, but it was too late. Salvador

1:23:47

had already stolen her truck and

1:23:50

was on his way to do what he had planned to

1:23:52

do for months. And

1:23:54

I was thinking about this the other day, But

1:23:58

imagine how many more lives. The would

1:24:00

have been lost. If he didn't crash

1:24:02

trucks. Into. That drainage ditch that

1:24:04

day? I. Mean, as soon as

1:24:06

he crashed, multiple people called nine one,

1:24:09

one. And. He spent several

1:24:11

minutes outside firing shots at people.

1:24:14

Said. I gave some of the teachers

1:24:16

and students a few more minutes to

1:24:18

prepare. I just can't even

1:24:20

imagine how many victims there would have

1:24:22

been. If. He just pulled right

1:24:24

up to the school and blindsided every

1:24:27

one. Will believe it

1:24:29

or not, one of the classrooms

1:24:31

he saw it up Room One

1:24:33

Eleven. Was. Actually his former

1:24:35

fourth grade classroom. The. Same

1:24:38

class where he was allegedly. Bullied.

1:24:40

And thought his fourth grade teacher was

1:24:43

actually teaching in the building that day.

1:24:45

But. She obviously had moved to. A

1:24:47

different classroom. Another eerie

1:24:49

part of the story is that

1:24:51

Salvador had dropped outta school the

1:24:53

year prior. And is

1:24:55

graduating class actually walk the halls

1:24:58

of Rob Elementary earlier? That morning.

1:25:01

It's this tradition schools do were seniors

1:25:03

walk the halls of their elementary school

1:25:05

and their cap and gown. And.

1:25:08

The little kids cheer them on

1:25:10

with encouraging signs. They. Do

1:25:12

this so the seniors can look back

1:25:15

at their education. But. It also

1:25:17

encourages the elementary. School kids to

1:25:19

stay in school. So. That one

1:25:21

day they too will graduate. It's

1:25:24

suspected that Salvador thought is graduating class

1:25:26

would be there that day when he

1:25:29

shot up the school. So

1:25:31

not only would he be murdering

1:25:33

children, Would. He would also get to

1:25:35

murder some of his old classmates. But.

1:25:37

I think this all goes to

1:25:39

show how sick this individual truly

1:25:42

was. And the fact

1:25:44

that he played and the victim's

1:25:46

blood and shouted out horribly disgusting

1:25:48

things before he sat people. It's

1:25:50

truly so scary that there are people

1:25:52

like him and this world. Now

1:25:55

like we mentioned, Salvador never really had

1:25:57

a relationship with his dad and. Mom

1:26:00

had a criminal history as was a history

1:26:02

of drug abuse. In. Fact: About

1:26:04

seven months after the massacre, she

1:26:06

was arrested in Oklahoma for domestic

1:26:09

violence, threatening to kill somebody. Actually,

1:26:12

And. It seems as if she cause a lot of issues

1:26:14

in you've all the. right? After the shooting

1:26:16

she spoke with the media and said i have

1:26:18

no words I have no words to say because

1:26:20

I don't know where he was thinking. He.

1:26:22

Had his reasons for doing what he did. And

1:26:25

please don't judge him. I. Just want. To.

1:26:27

The innocent children who died. forgive me.

1:26:29

forgive me. For. Give my son. I

1:26:32

know he had his reasons. In.

1:26:35

I get that she probably just didn't know

1:26:37

what to say at that moment. I

1:26:40

also understand she is grieving. By.

1:26:42

Seen he had his reasons

1:26:45

is so insensitive as. A.

1:26:48

Couple of months after the shooting, one

1:26:50

of the victim's parents ran into her

1:26:52

in town. And. Some heated

1:26:55

words were exchanged. Eatery

1:26:57

on I even told the victim's

1:26:59

parents quote. You. Have no right

1:27:01

to judge my son. Here

1:27:04

is that video. Luxury

1:27:22

those little momentum but it's owner. And.

1:27:34

Surprisingly. Salvador's mom

1:27:37

actually buried him and his cemetery

1:27:39

outside of San Antonio. Which.

1:27:42

Is extremely rare. Now.

1:27:44

His grave doesn't have his actual. Name

1:27:46

but rather his nickname which

1:27:48

is Loni. His

1:27:51

tombstone reads Lonnie Me Sixteenth,

1:27:53

Two Thousand and Four. Door.

1:27:55

Are angel and haven't. We.

1:27:57

Will never stopped loving you. Were.

1:28:00

In P N B with got.

1:28:02

Our. Beloved son, brother and

1:28:04

grants. His mom also

1:28:07

spoke with the media and said that she

1:28:09

is confident her son is in heaven. Saying

1:28:12

quote. My. Son spirit is in

1:28:14

heaven. I also feel his

1:28:16

spirit is with me as well. I

1:28:18

believe God has forgiven him for what

1:28:20

she did. The. Only people who

1:28:22

were in hell are the ones

1:28:25

who betrayed Jesus. So.

1:28:27

Yes, It's haven't is a

1:28:29

place where Salvador Ramos is welcomed than I

1:28:31

don't want to go. But. Now

1:28:34

that we've got that part of the story

1:28:36

over with. Let. Circle back

1:28:38

to what actually matters. Which.

1:28:40

Are the victims. Another

1:28:43

heartbreaking part of his story has to do

1:28:45

with the survivors of Room One Eleven and

1:28:47

One Twelve. Many. Of them had been

1:28:49

shot that day but with live. Over

1:28:52

time their physical wounds healed, but

1:28:54

the emotional wounds will last much

1:28:56

longer. After the shooting, psychologists

1:28:58

around Taxes provided counseling to the

1:29:00

survivors and said they are displaying

1:29:02

an assortment of reactions to the

1:29:05

tragedy including confusion, disorientation, emotional shut

1:29:07

down, and feelings of panic. A

1:29:09

team plans to strengthen the community

1:29:11

long term, saying. We. Don't

1:29:13

just want to put a band aid over

1:29:16

in leave? We need to create a trauma

1:29:18

inform community because a situation doesn't and wants

1:29:20

a traumatic event is over. A

1:29:22

zoo Martinez was shown the leg and to

1:29:24

this day he still walks with a limp.

1:29:27

Shortly. After the shooting his mom to Sandra

1:29:29

took him to the movies. wanted to take

1:29:31

his mind off everything. However,

1:29:33

She quickly realized it was a huge mistake.

1:29:35

The loud music and sound effects coming from

1:29:37

a seat or speakers sent a jury into

1:29:40

a panic and they had to leave. Shorting.

1:29:43

All of our as was a survivor

1:29:45

of Room One Twelve who managed to

1:29:47

walk away on injured. In. Charlie

1:29:49

Mans documentary. Jordan was asked how

1:29:51

he thought he survived that day

1:29:53

and he said quote, trust my

1:29:55

friends and my Grandpa watching over

1:29:57

me. And. For. Students.

1:30:00

Mom Virginia told the documentary that her

1:30:02

son watched many of his classmates die

1:30:04

that day and through

1:30:06

tears she said, quote, I thank God

1:30:08

every day that he's alive. I

1:30:11

mean the fear that ran through my body that day, I

1:30:13

still feel it every day. It's

1:30:16

become to where any little thing that he does

1:30:18

makes me emotional. Seeing him

1:30:20

play football makes me emotional. Seeing

1:30:22

him ride a bike makes me emotional because

1:30:25

I just think about what if, end quote.

1:30:29

And a piece of Jordan's innocence

1:30:31

was lost that day. Virginia said

1:30:33

that Jordan used to be a

1:30:35

very carefree child, but now he

1:30:37

is constantly preoccupied on what

1:30:39

he would do in an active shooter situation.

1:30:42

She said he constantly asks, Mom,

1:30:45

where do we go if someone tries to attack

1:30:47

us? In which direction? Something

1:30:50

no little kid should ever have to worry about.

1:30:54

Ten-year-old Noah Arona had been shot in the

1:30:56

back. Like most of the injured children

1:30:58

in that room, he couldn't even cry because the

1:31:00

gunman would hear him. Imagine

1:31:02

getting shot with a rifle as a

1:31:04

10-year-old and because the police won't come

1:31:06

in to save you, you can't even

1:31:08

cry. His mom would later

1:31:10

tell CNN that while Noah waited around for

1:31:12

the police, one of the little

1:31:15

girls he was lying by, all he could hear

1:31:17

was her gurgling because she was trying to breathe,

1:31:19

but she couldn't because she was shot and

1:31:21

you could just hear her choking, she said,

1:31:24

which is something he will remember for the rest

1:31:26

of his life. His mom said

1:31:28

he can't enjoy the 4th of July because of

1:31:30

fireworks. He can't enjoy a family

1:31:32

barbecue because the smell of smoke brings him back

1:31:34

to that day in the classroom. His

1:31:37

mom would later say, you would think things

1:31:39

are getting back to normal, as people assume

1:31:41

they are, just because my son is

1:31:43

alive and here, but it's not like that. My

1:31:46

son has trouble sleeping, being in a big

1:31:48

crowd, anything loud scares him, being by himself.

1:31:51

Of course we feel blessed because he is

1:31:53

here, but every day it's a struggle. Our

1:31:55

children are not the same anymore, they are

1:31:58

not like they used to be. Samuel

1:32:00

Salinas was also in room 112 and

1:32:03

watched many of his friends and classmates die.

1:32:07

His father told Charlie Mann that

1:32:09

his son suffers from survivor's guilt,

1:32:12

saying, quote, he saw

1:32:14

blood being splattered everywhere on

1:32:16

the walls, floors, kids

1:32:18

full of blood. And he

1:32:20

had nothing, no power to

1:32:23

do anything to save them. End

1:32:25

quote. His dad said that before

1:32:28

the shooting, Samuel was a happy

1:32:30

child with a ton of energy. He

1:32:32

was talkative and could easily carry

1:32:35

conversations with strangers. But

1:32:37

not anymore. Since the

1:32:39

shooting, Samuel is more withdrawn. He's

1:32:42

weary of strangers, and

1:32:44

he faces a lot of inner turmoil. And

1:32:47

then at night, Samuel has nightmares. And

1:32:51

he sometimes dreams about being chased by

1:32:53

the gunman who murdered his friends and

1:32:55

teachers. In other

1:32:57

dreams, the shooter isn't chasing him at all.

1:33:00

He's just standing there, shooting

1:33:03

bullets into Samuel's body. Survivor

1:33:05

Chloe Torres, who was the little girl who

1:33:08

called 911 that day, was also

1:33:10

shot during the shooting. A bullet

1:33:12

grazed her thyroid and she had shrapnel

1:33:14

wounds. Now, if you remember, in the

1:33:16

911 call, Chloe told the

1:33:18

dispatch, my dad taught me what to

1:33:20

do in these types of situations, which

1:33:22

was true. Chloe's dad would later tell

1:33:24

Charlie men, we are very grateful

1:33:27

that we've had talks about the shootings and that's

1:33:29

been going on around our nation. We do

1:33:31

a lot of dry runs or what ifs, what would

1:33:33

you do if you were in this situation? And

1:33:36

when we would speak about those scenarios, she

1:33:38

would sometimes tell me that she would freeze.

1:33:40

But on that day, May 24th, 2022, at the hospital,

1:33:42

one of the first things she told me was that

1:33:44

she didn't

1:33:48

freeze that day. Chloe Torres was

1:33:50

one of the heroes of the story. But

1:33:52

like the other survivors of room 112, she

1:33:54

has a lot of PTSD. Her Dad

1:33:57

says that she doesn't like big crowds, loud

1:33:59

noises scare her. And when they go out.

1:34:01

She's. Constantly scared someone's going to come into

1:34:03

the room and harm them. Another

1:34:06

survivor of Room One twelve with

1:34:08

my as a moron. Mile

1:34:10

was shot seven times in

1:34:12

the chest, back, arms, and

1:34:14

hands. After. Getting pulled

1:34:17

from her classroom that day, she

1:34:19

was transported to University Hospital in

1:34:21

San Antonio. The. She would stay

1:34:23

for the next two months. And

1:34:26

are more than sixty surgery. But.

1:34:28

Eventually, her wounds would start healing.

1:34:31

And she would finally get to come home. For.

1:34:34

Sam we ended up moving from. You've All Be.

1:34:36

The memories there were just too much

1:34:38

to bear. They. Do hope to

1:34:41

move back one day, but until then.

1:34:43

My As spends her days painting. A

1:34:46

new hobby she picked up after the shooting.

1:34:48

For. Dad told the media quote. I.

1:34:50

Don't think there's enough pain and Hobby lobby

1:34:53

for Maya. I. Guess that's her get

1:34:55

away. They. Also said the

1:34:57

therapy has. Really helped. But.

1:34:59

She still ceases survivor's guilt and

1:35:01

her parents said she cries a

1:35:03

lot. Like. See other survivors.

1:35:06

Maya is more reserved after the

1:35:08

shooting. And a lot more.

1:35:10

fearful. She to stay

1:35:12

away from fireworks movies with

1:35:15

gunfire. And large crowds.

1:35:17

Her mom said quote. She.

1:35:19

Shows a lot of fear of this world

1:35:22

as she never had before. And.

1:35:24

quo. Since. The Shooting on

1:35:26

May Twenty Fourth. Two Thousand And Twenty Two,

1:35:28

The town of you've all the has done.

1:35:30

It's best to heal from this tragedy and

1:35:32

the way that they do that as by

1:35:34

sticking together as a community and remembering the

1:35:36

victims. Downtown. A huge

1:35:38

mural was painted showing the faces of

1:35:40

each of the victims. The our teacher

1:35:43

who organized it named a board she's

1:35:45

a said the downtown has been turned

1:35:47

into this Opener gallery. educating people not

1:35:49

only about the kids but their stories

1:35:52

in their lives. Were never going to

1:35:54

forget them, their faces. That's. why

1:35:56

they had to be portraits the murals provide a

1:35:58

place where the sale miss him so celebrate. Another

1:36:01

part of their healing process is moving

1:36:03

forward, but that's hard to do when

1:36:05

you drive through town and see Rob Elementary.

1:36:07

The building serves as a horrible reminder of

1:36:09

that day. So, the town of

1:36:11

Yuvaldi has announced that they'll tear down the school

1:36:14

and rebuild a new one. The new

1:36:16

building will have extra security and a

1:36:18

beautiful metal tree near the library to

1:36:20

memorialize the lives of the 21 victims.

1:36:24

Another part of healing is making a

1:36:26

difference, so that no other

1:36:28

town has to go through what Yuvaldi

1:36:30

went through. However, like with

1:36:32

every mass shooting, our politicians

1:36:34

give their thoughts and prayers, and

1:36:37

then they do absolutely nothing to change

1:36:39

it. This next part

1:36:41

is going to piss some people off,

1:36:43

so if you're already a little triggered,

1:36:46

save yourself the energy, turn this

1:36:48

podcast off. But in

1:36:50

the past, we have tried to

1:36:53

leave politics out because anytime we

1:36:55

mention anything, people get upset.

1:36:58

They tell us, stick to the third. It works. Leave

1:37:01

politics out. And if you

1:37:03

don't, you're going to lose me as a listener. And

1:37:06

for years, we have listened to those

1:37:08

comments out of fear of upsetting anyone.

1:37:11

But I don't care anymore. If

1:37:14

you choose to stop listening to us for

1:37:16

this, we are okay with that. But

1:37:18

I think it is incredibly irresponsible

1:37:20

of us to be telling these

1:37:22

stories on our platform while

1:37:24

grazing over the fact that firearms are

1:37:27

the leading cause of death for children

1:37:29

and teens in the United States. We've

1:37:32

also mentioned in the past that we don't

1:37:34

think the government should go through and take

1:37:36

everyone's guns away, but we

1:37:39

are definitely for stricter gun laws.

1:37:41

In the case of the Yuvaldi school

1:37:44

shooting, it is absolutely disgusting that a

1:37:46

monster like this was able to obtain

1:37:48

a rifle as easily as he did,

1:37:52

especially with all of the warning signs

1:37:54

he had before the shooting. Salvador

1:37:56

Ramos bought the rifle used in the massacre just

1:37:59

days before the shooting. Days after his

1:38:01

18th birthday, people can't

1:38:03

legally drink at 18 because their

1:38:05

brains aren't fully developed, but

1:38:08

yet they're allowed to buy firearms that can

1:38:10

wipe out an entire room in seconds.

1:38:14

Keep in mind this is the same

1:38:16

man who everyone called school shooter. A

1:38:19

man who threatened to rape and murder people.

1:38:22

Someone who made multiple threats that he was

1:38:24

gearing up for something big. And

1:38:27

someone who livestreamed videos of him holding

1:38:29

a bag of dead cats. In

1:38:32

what world is he allowed to get his

1:38:34

hands on this type of weapon? Many

1:38:37

of the people who lost a child in

1:38:39

the Yuvaldi school shooting are proud gun owners.

1:38:43

And even they agree that the

1:38:45

age to buy certain semi-automatic rifles

1:38:47

should be raised from 18

1:38:49

to 21, with the exception

1:38:51

of people in law enforcement or the

1:38:53

military, which is exactly what House Bill

1:38:56

2744 is all about. The

1:39:00

bill was first introduced in February of 2023,

1:39:02

and many of the Yuvaldi victims' families

1:39:06

fought hard to get this bill

1:39:08

passed. In fact, some

1:39:10

even went to the Capitol to testify

1:39:12

in front of Texas lawmakers. However,

1:39:15

when they got there, they had to wait

1:39:17

outside for over 13 hours until they

1:39:21

finally let them in to hear their

1:39:23

testimony. So here are what

1:39:25

some of those parents had to say. As

1:39:28

a parent, unless it's enough, please

1:39:30

do something. I don't want you to have to

1:39:32

identify your child's body based on what he was

1:39:34

wearing to school that day. We

1:39:36

do everything to protect these guns. Let's

1:39:39

just try something to protect our

1:39:41

children. My name

1:39:44

is Javier Casadiz, from

1:39:46

Valley, Texas. My daughter

1:39:48

Jackie Casadiz. I

1:39:50

go back to the

1:39:52

day, the first day scene,

1:39:55

my daughter in her little white dress laying

1:39:58

in that coffin. I'm

1:40:02

beginning to wonder

1:40:05

what might be right through my inner

1:40:10

voice. I'm

1:40:12

confused where all

1:40:15

the sadness, why all the sadness in my

1:40:17

family's faces and the

1:40:19

continuous crying of others as they passed me

1:40:22

one by one. What

1:40:24

did I do wrong? I

1:40:29

try to tell everyone that I'm okay. I

1:40:31

raise my voice louder and louder but

1:40:34

no response. Why

1:40:37

can't anyone hear me? Is

1:40:41

it because of the loud noises that came

1:40:43

into my classroom? Or

1:40:45

is it the long beep? The

1:40:53

long beep coming from the heart monitor. My

1:40:56

baby rose full of life and love. She

1:40:59

never learned how to ride her bike, never

1:41:02

made it to the fifth grade, or

1:41:06

never experienced her fifteenth birthday, prom,

1:41:09

graduation from high school, college, and

1:41:12

becoming a vet, visiting

1:41:14

Paris, or even falling

1:41:16

in love because she was taking me, being

1:41:19

able to

1:41:22

be murdered at nine

1:41:24

years old along with her 18 classmates and two

1:41:26

teachers, but an 18-year-old gunman.

1:41:30

We're here to support HB 2744 in raising

1:41:32

the age from 18 to 21 to purchase an

1:41:34

assault rifle. We

1:41:38

believe, I believe, and I believe many

1:41:41

Texans, you know, this

1:41:44

will have some type of effect

1:41:46

in stopping future mass shootings. We're

1:41:50

not here to take anyone's

1:41:52

guns away. That's far from the truth.

1:41:55

I'm a gun owner. I believe in the

1:41:57

Second Amendment right. I'm

1:42:00

a concealed carrier. So

1:42:04

again, we're not here for that. All we are

1:42:07

asking is for reasonable

1:42:13

gun sense laws. My

1:42:17

daughter here next to me is trying to buy

1:42:19

a superglue at Walmart today and was flagged for

1:42:21

being under 18. But

1:42:25

this kid was able to buy an AR-15 back to

1:42:28

back, 1,000

1:42:30

rounds of ammo, bulletproof vest, 60

1:42:33

rounds of mags. I mean, what's wrong with this

1:42:35

picture? I

1:42:39

don't want you to see what I saw. A

1:42:42

someone nine-year-old daughter draped in a white

1:42:44

sheet, cold

1:42:48

and alone in an operating room. I

1:42:51

saw the wound that took her life. I

1:42:55

don't want any of you all to see that. We

1:42:57

need to change these laws. Please

1:43:00

have an open mind and please pass again

1:43:02

past this law. My

1:43:04

name is Kimberly Rubio. I am

1:43:06

the mother of Lexi Rubio, a victim of

1:43:08

the Rob Elementary shooting in humility. I

1:43:12

arrived here today at 8 AM. And

1:43:15

as we waited more than 13 hours, I'm

1:43:17

reminded of May 24, 2022, when we

1:43:20

waited hours to be told our daughter would never

1:43:22

come home. I

1:43:25

expressed confusion then, and I'm

1:43:27

perplexed now. Did

1:43:29

you think we would go home? Chairman

1:43:32

Keene, thank you for

1:43:34

filing the bill and for everything you've done

1:43:36

for the families in our community. Every

1:43:40

day since May 24, 2022, I replay alternate

1:43:43

scenarios in my head, scenarios

1:43:46

in which Lexi is still with us

1:43:48

today. What

1:43:50

if I kept her in the district's dual language program

1:43:54

and she would have been at Epton Elementary that day? What

1:43:58

if she had a stomach bug? that week instead

1:44:00

of the previous, that

1:44:03

she'd have been homesick. What

1:44:07

if I'd taken her home after the 10 30 a.m. awards

1:44:10

ceremony that

1:44:12

she'd have been safe and sound and make

1:44:14

great grandmas. Standing

1:44:19

before you today, I wonder if

1:44:21

on May 24th you

1:44:23

watched coverage of you without a good fold and

1:44:26

wondered what you could have done to prevent this

1:44:28

tragedy. Did

1:44:32

you look at images of children running for their

1:44:34

lives and think, what

1:44:36

if we had enacted stricter gun laws? Did

1:44:40

you consider the children still inside? Those

1:44:43

like our daughter who would never emerge?

1:44:48

Did you imagine what it would feel like to bury

1:44:50

your child? Sit

1:44:54

with that image as we do, because

1:44:57

only when you imagine will

1:44:59

you as Texas lawmakers take

1:45:01

necessary action, including voting for

1:45:03

House Bill 2744. Had

1:45:07

this bill been the law

1:45:09

in the state of Texas one year

1:45:11

ago, the gunman would not have been

1:45:13

able to purchase the semi-automatic weapon he

1:45:16

used to murder our daughter and 20 others

1:45:19

eight days after his 18th birthday. It's

1:45:24

too late for us. No

1:45:26

action you take will bring back our daughter, but

1:45:29

you do have the opportunity to honor

1:45:31

Lexi's life and legacy by voting

1:45:33

for House Bill 2744, which will

1:45:35

make our community safer and save

1:45:38

life. Mr.

1:45:41

Chairman, to conclude, I have

1:45:44

one ask of you in this committee. Allow

1:45:46

this committee to vote on House Bill 2744. I

1:45:50

have hope that collectively you will have the

1:45:53

will, the courage, the judgment and the strength

1:45:55

to do what is just and right. Our

1:45:58

hearts may be broken, but our resolve has never

1:46:00

been stronger. 21 for 21. Let's raise the age. Veronica

1:46:05

Mata, whose daughter Tess died at

1:46:07

Rob Elementary, said, Tess didn't

1:46:09

have a choice in life or death, but you

1:46:11

as leaders have a choice of what my daughter's

1:46:13

life will be remembered for. Will she

1:46:15

die in vain, or will her life have

1:46:17

saved another child? Maybe your

1:46:20

child. And there were even

1:46:22

Republicans who supported this bill. Justin

1:46:24

Holland was one who voted to pass House Bill 2744,

1:46:26

and he would say, I'm

1:46:29

not naive enough to think that laws alone

1:46:31

will prevent the type of senseless violence that

1:46:34

occurs all too frequently in our state. But

1:46:36

after listening to many hours of testimony over

1:46:38

this session, I became convinced that

1:46:41

this small change to the law might

1:46:43

serve as a significant roadblock to a

1:46:45

young person not old enough to buy

1:46:47

tobacco or alcohol from acquiring a specific

1:46:50

type of semi-automatic rifle intent upon using

1:46:52

it in a destructive and illegal manner.

1:46:55

But sadly, the bill never

1:46:57

made it to the House and Senate.

1:47:00

So here we are again, back at

1:47:02

square one. You know, the

1:47:04

other day I was sitting on my

1:47:06

couch finishing up this story when I

1:47:08

heard sirens outside of my window. So

1:47:11

I looked on social media and saw that

1:47:13

a mass shooting took place at Lakewood Church

1:47:16

here in Houston. Now I'm

1:47:18

not associated with the church, but

1:47:20

I do live about a minute away from

1:47:22

it. And as I see

1:47:25

all of the helicopters and news crews,

1:47:28

I just kind of had this very

1:47:30

surreal moment. Here I am

1:47:32

on my couch working on the Uvalde mass

1:47:34

shooting, one of the worst stories

1:47:36

we've ever covered. And there's

1:47:38

literally a mass shooting happening right down

1:47:41

the street for me. And I

1:47:43

just thought to myself, what the hell

1:47:45

is going on? What

1:47:47

is this world we live in? And

1:47:49

why isn't anyone doing anything about it?

1:47:53

In that shooting, the woman had a long

1:47:55

history of mental illness and arrests, but she

1:47:57

was still able to legally buy a rifle.

1:48:00

Unlike in this case, she posted

1:48:02

alarming messages on her social media,

1:48:04

yet another example of how these

1:48:06

types of firearms are getting in

1:48:08

the hands of the absolutely wrong

1:48:10

people. You know,

1:48:12

there is this back and forth

1:48:14

argument that has really divided our

1:48:16

country. One part says

1:48:18

that guns are the problem and the

1:48:20

other says that it's not guns, it's

1:48:23

mental health. And I believe

1:48:25

it's both. I do think

1:48:27

that we need stricter gun laws like raising

1:48:29

the age from 18 to 21 for buying rifles.

1:48:33

But I also think we need funding for

1:48:36

mental health. Politicians in Texas

1:48:38

love to say that mental health is

1:48:40

solely to blame. But

1:48:42

Texas ranks last in all 50

1:48:44

states for mental health funding. So

1:48:47

if mental health really is to blame,

1:48:50

then why aren't we doing anything about it? In

1:48:53

2019, a gunman walked into a

1:48:55

Walmart in El Paso and he murdered

1:48:57

23 people. In

1:49:00

response, Texas' Governor Greg Abbott went on

1:49:02

and on about how guns weren't the

1:49:04

problem, but he said he was

1:49:06

going to create a task force to address

1:49:08

the rise of mass shootings. And

1:49:11

he did. However, the task

1:49:13

force met just two times and

1:49:16

then never met again. And look,

1:49:18

I'm not saying I have all the

1:49:20

answers, but something has to

1:49:22

be done. If we aren't

1:49:24

going to make stricter gun laws, then every

1:49:26

single school in the nation needs to be

1:49:29

protected from these monsters. The

1:49:31

crime scene photos I found from this

1:49:33

case are some of the most disturbing

1:49:36

photos I have ever seen in my

1:49:38

life. The amount of

1:49:40

blood and carnage in those pictures will

1:49:42

make you sick. It's a sick

1:49:45

reminder of what happens when these guns get

1:49:47

into the hands of the wrong people. It's

1:49:49

a sick reminder of what happens when

1:49:52

our schools aren't secure and

1:49:54

when our police officers don't do their

1:49:56

jobs. But Americans need

1:49:58

to work together. we need

1:50:00

to compromise because while we

1:50:02

stand back pointing fingers fighting over who

1:50:05

is right children will continue

1:50:07

to die and you can only

1:50:09

hope that it doesn't happen in

1:50:11

your town to your community

1:50:13

or to someone you know." If

1:50:17

you want to help protect children

1:50:19

from gun violence please consider joining, signing

1:50:21

the petition, or donating to the

1:50:23

Sandy Hook Promise which envisions

1:50:25

a future where children are free from

1:50:27

shootings and acts of violence on their

1:50:29

schools, homes, and communities. Courtney

1:50:32

and I are also going to make

1:50:34

a donation to the Child Life Disaster

1:50:36

Relief which provides professional services to children

1:50:38

after disasters to help with their emotional

1:50:40

needs. Research shows that

1:50:42

many chronic health issues both mental and

1:50:44

physical are seen in children

1:50:46

even years after a catastrophic event and

1:50:49

when children don't receive support in a

1:50:51

timely manner they can have long term

1:50:53

negative effects which is exactly

1:50:55

why we are donating to the Child Life

1:50:58

Disaster Relief because they work to

1:51:00

give children the tools and support needed

1:51:02

so that after these disasters they can

1:51:04

properly heal. This is incredibly

1:51:06

important work so if you can please join

1:51:08

us in supporting them. We'll link

1:51:11

the Child Life Disaster Relief and the

1:51:13

Sandy Hook Promise in the description of

1:51:15

our podcast. And now

1:51:17

to end our podcast I'm just going

1:51:20

to include 21 seconds

1:51:22

of silence each second

1:51:24

representing a victim of this shooting

1:51:26

who passed away that day. I

1:51:29

want all of you listening to this show to

1:51:32

really after listening to this series on

1:51:34

this event take a

1:51:36

few moments of silence and think

1:51:38

to yourself what can we

1:51:41

change, what can we do and help

1:51:43

us honor the victims In

1:51:46

whatever way that you can. All

1:52:14

right everybody. thank you so much

1:52:32

the stuff I deathly teared up

1:52:34

a few times or reading this

1:52:36

1:52:38
