This podcast is not

0:19

for everyone. You have been warned.

0:21

In our last episode,

0:24

we talked about one of America's most

0:26

notorious killers. John

0:28

Wayne Gacy, a man who took

0:31

advantage of young boys for his own

0:33

sexual desires. If

0:35

you haven't listened to part one, go back

0:37

now and listen because it's in that

0:39

episode where you'll learn everything

0:41

that led up to Gacy's horrible crimes.

0:45

We talked about his childhood, his

0:47

abusive father, how he got married,

0:49

had children, and became heavily

0:51

involved in his community of water

0:53

Iowa. Then we also gave you

0:55

a look into the beginning of Gacy's downfall.

0:58

In nineteen sixty seven, after sexually

1:01

alting a minor. He was sentenced

1:03

to ten years in an Iowa prison. But

1:06

as we learned, he would only end up serving

1:08

eight two months of that sentence.

1:11

Afterwards, Gacy moved into a

1:13

small home in a suburb of Chicago

1:15

called Norwood Park, and it

1:17

was there where he had a fresh start,

1:20

where no one knew of his dark

1:21

past. And that's

1:23

where we left off in part one. But

1:26

in this week's episode, we are going

1:28

to tell you all about the murders that

1:30

grip the nation back in the nineteen

1:32

seventies. In the

1:34

years after Gacy was released from

1:36

prison, dozens of young men

1:38

from around Chicago started going

1:40

missing, thirty three young

1:42

men to be exact. Many

1:45

people including the police thought

1:47

that these boys were runaways, and

1:50

there weren't a lot of resources allocated

1:52

to finding them. But unbeknownst

1:55

to everyone by nineteen seventy

1:57

eight, twenty nine of the thirty

1:59

three missing

1:59

young men could be found in one

2:02

location. in the small, unassuming

2:04

home on Sommerdale Avenue.

2:06

Some were buried

2:08

in the backyard or in a concrete

2:11

slab at his garage But

2:13

most of them could be found buried in

2:15

the cold, wet, and crowded crawl

2:17

space under his home. and

2:20

it wouldn't be long until the entire world

2:22

knew the name of the man responsible.

2:25

This is the story

2:26

of John Wayne Gacy, In

2:29

the murders of the thirty three

2:30

young men around Chicago, I'm

2:33

Courtney Brownin.

2:34

And I'm Colin Brownin. in

2:36

your

2:36

listening to in America.

3:46

It's the summer of nineteen seventy

3:48

one, and I after going to prison for

3:50

sexually assaulting a minor, John Wayne

3:52

Gacy decides to leave Waterloo Iowa

3:54

behind and start a new life somewhere else.

3:58

After all, his wife and kids had left

4:00

him after he was incarcerated and the

4:02

people of Waterloo knew all about his

4:04

dark past. So why not pick

4:06

up and have a fresh start? And he ended

4:08

up buying a small home in a suburb of

4:10

Chicago called Norwood Park. It

4:12

was an unassuming home, about a thousand

4:14

square feet built in the forties located

4:17

on Summerdale Avenue, and it was a

4:19

nice neighborhood.

4:20

Along the streets outside of Daisy's new house

4:22

were children running around and playing,

4:24

families going on walks. It was

4:26

considered safe a great place to raise a

4:28

family. When Gacy moved into

4:30

the home, the people in his neighborhood thought

4:32

he looked like a nice and friendly man.

4:34

They had no idea he had just been released from

4:36

prison or that his home would

4:38

later be a mass grave for twenty nine

4:40

missing boys from the Chicago area.

4:43

And Casey was lucky because at the

4:45

time the national crime database was

4:47

brand new and it wasn't easy getting people's

4:49

records. The police stations also

4:51

weren't communicating with each other, so

4:53

he really was able to move here without anyone

4:55

knowing his past. That was divorced.

4:57

She's been violent.

4:59

I read and miss Marlon, but

5:02

I did miss his shoulder.

5:07

I wanted to be John Gucci, the married

5:10

man, the family man, the guy who wanted to have

5:12

his own husband of it. And

5:14

then in August of seventy one, I

5:17

put the house of an eighties to thirteenth, somebody

5:19

else. Another

5:19

thing the people of Norwood Park didn't

5:22

know was that John Wayne Gacy was

5:24

not a rehabilitated man. after

5:26

he was released from prison. In

5:28

fact, just eight months after Casey's

5:30

release from prison, he was arrested

5:32

again for assaulting another underage

5:34

boy. Now

5:35

keep in mind, this was before

5:37

he moved into his infamous Whole

5:39

One Somerville Avenue. In

5:42

that incident, which was just

5:44

a few months after he was released from prison.

5:47

Casey was living in a condo with his

5:49

mom and working at a restaurant

5:51

called Bruno. And because he

5:53

was freshly out of prison, he felt

5:55

a little invincible, so

5:57

he decided to go driving

5:58

around Greyhound

5:59

bus station looking for a

6:02

sexual encounter. But

6:04

he wasn't looking for a woman

6:06

or

6:06

a man his age. He wanted

6:08

an under age boy and he

6:10

ended up finding one that was hitchhiking

6:12

near the bus station. The

6:14

boy would later go to the police in tell

6:17

them that Gacy tried to force him

6:19

to have sex. Luckily,

6:21

the boy ended up getting away. And

6:23

on February twelfth, nineteen seventy,

6:26

The police came knocking on Casey's door

6:28

with a warrant for his arrest.

6:31

And because he was on parole during

6:33

this incident, he should have been sent to

6:35

prison right away. But

6:37

the charges ended up getting dismissed

6:39

because the boy never showed up to testify

6:42

in court. So

6:44

it's

6:44

clear that during Casey's time in prison,

6:46

he was not rehabilitated. In

6:49

about six months after this

6:51

assault, John Wayne Gacy and his mother

6:53

decided to move into his infamous home

6:56

in Norwood Park.

6:57

It's also around this time when Gacy

7:00

started dating a woman named Carol

7:02

Lofgren. Carol was very

7:04

kind, quiet, and

7:06

mostly kept to herself. Gacy

7:08

had actually known Carol for

7:10

years because she was good

7:12

friends with his little sister Karen.

7:14

And he would go on to say that

7:16

before they

7:16

started dating, Carol was

7:19

like a little sister to him.

7:21

In

7:21

nineteen seventy one, she was going

7:23

through a pretty bad divorce and

7:25

Gacy was a source of comfort.

7:27

According to the book, Berry Dreams,

7:30

Carol would later say that John was a,

7:32

quote, very warm and understanding

7:34

person. very easy to talk

7:36

to, knew a lot of things. It

7:39

was very easy to just listen

7:41

to him. I

7:42

always felt like

7:42

he knew what he was talking about.

7:45

End quote. Now, Carol

7:47

actually had two young daughters

7:49

with her previous husband and

7:51

one of the reason she was attracted to

7:53

Gacy was because he was very

7:55

good with them. In fact,

7:57

it wasn't long after they started

7:59

dating when

7:59

her girl started calling him dad.

8:03

In according to Carol, Gacy came

8:05

on very strong in the beginning of

8:07

their relationship.

8:08

Almost as if he could sense Carol

8:10

was vulnerable.

8:11

needed someone to lean

8:13

on. I started seeing Carola

8:15

in October of seventy one.

8:17

She was so afraid of her divorce then, but

8:19

we started going on anyway. We're trying

8:21

to spent time to get her. Hey, I

8:23

see. Why don't you just move in with the

8:25

kids? Carol would later say if Gacy,

8:27

quote,

8:28

he swept me off my feet. I

8:30

don't think I loved him, but I

8:32

was still mixed up about my first

8:34

marriage, and he treated me

8:36

well.

8:36

End quote.

8:37

And Gacy was very upfront with

8:40

Carol about his past. He could see a

8:42

future with her, and if they were going to

8:44

last, he knew he needed to tell her about

8:46

his incarceration. So one day, he

8:48

sat her down and said, look, I'm

8:50

bisexual. And last year, I was kind of

8:52

experimenting with this guy, and I ended up

8:54

getting in trouble for it. Carol said

8:56

that Gacy didn't really go into any

8:58

detail about exactly what had happened, but

9:00

he wanted to make sure she knew he was

9:02

not gay, just bisexual.

9:04

And from what I could find, it seemed

9:06

like Carol handled it pretty well. She

9:08

liked Casey, and in her mind, he had a

9:10

good head on his shoulders. And more

9:12

importantly, he was really good to her in the

9:14

girls. They seemed like a perfect

9:16

match. John was the more dominant

9:18

and aggressive one. while Carol was quiet

9:20

and submissive, but it worked for

9:22

them. And during the Christmas season of

9:24

nineteen seventy one, the two got

9:26

engaged. They were happy. But

9:28

were they actually? Carol might

9:30

have been, but Gacy still had a

9:32

dark secret he carried with him. One

9:34

he could never tell Carol about.

9:36

Shortly after they got engaged, Casey

9:39

and Carol spent new years together.

9:41

It was

9:42

nineteen seventy two and

9:44

at midnight they share to kiss and

9:46

talked about their plans for the future.

9:48

They even came home afterwards

9:51

and had sex. The

9:53

following day, he dropped off Carol at

9:55

her

9:55

house, but when he returned back

9:57

home, he couldn't shake the feeling that

9:59

He wanted

9:59

something more. Something

10:01

that Carol would never be able to

10:03

give him. He wanted

10:05

to have sex with a boy.

10:08

Plus,

10:08

his mother wasn't home because she was

10:10

visiting families, so it was the

10:12

perfect opportunity. In

10:15

the following day, on January third

10:18

nineteen seventy two, Gacy

10:20

left his home to go driving around the

10:22

Greyhound bus station. one of his

10:24

favorite places to find potential

10:26

victims.

10:26

He knew that

10:27

he could always go there to find

10:29

young and vulnerable boys. Many

10:32

of the people who hung out around the Greyhound

10:35

bus station were drug addicts,

10:37

runaways, or young people who

10:39

had been rejected by their families.

10:42

Gacy came to find out that there were a

10:44

lot of young gay people that ended up

10:46

there too. And

10:47

on this

10:48

night, he drove there in search of someone

10:50

who he could have sex with.

10:53

Now,

10:53

we briefly talked about this

10:55

in part one of this series, but

10:57

after driving around for a while,

10:59

Gacy

10:59

spots sixteen year old Timothy

11:02

McCoy, and he was exactly

11:04

Gacy's type,

11:05

young, slim, and blonde.

11:09

Timothy was at the bus station that

11:11

day because he was on his way back

11:13

home to Glenwood, Iowa after

11:15

Christmas vacation. but he twelve

11:17

hour layover at the bus station in

11:19

Chicago. And because he had

11:21

some time to spare, he

11:23

stepped out side at about one AM

11:25

for some fresh air. And

11:27

that's when dicey spotted him.

11:29

Now, again, we told this

11:31

story in part one, but just

11:33

as a refresher. Casey

11:36

pulls his car up next to Tim

11:38

and offers him a place to stay,

11:40

and Tim decides to take him up on

11:43

the offer. Along the car

11:45

ride, Casey asks Tim personal

11:47

questions about his sex life like how

11:49

often do you have sex or have you ever

11:51

been with a man? And this is what he would

11:53

do to introduce the idea of sex

11:55

to these young boys. Once back

11:57

at Gacy's house, he makes them some

11:59

drinks. And before the night was over,

12:01

the two up performing oral sex on each

12:03

other. Again, we have no idea

12:05

if Tim wanted to do this, but he was

12:07

only sixteen. So either way,

12:09

It was sexual assault of a minor. The

12:11

next morning, Tim wakes up and decides to

12:13

make gacy breakfast as a thank you for

12:15

letting him stay the night. But when

12:17

he walks into Casey's bedroom to let him know that the

12:20

breakfast is ready, he's holding a

12:22

knife. And Casey takes this

12:24

as a threat, The two end up

12:26

wrestling over the night. And before

12:28

long, Casey has it in his hands. Tim

12:30

didn't even have time to explain what was

12:32

going on. Before Casey stabbed him in

12:34

the chest four to five times. Casey

12:36

would later claim that this entire incident was

12:38

all a big misunderstanding. He didn't

12:40

want to stab him. He had to.

12:43

It was self defense.

12:45

After stabbing Timothy McCoy,

12:47

Daisy

12:48

looks down at his hands and

12:50

realizes they're covered in blood.

12:52

so he quickly ran to the restroom to clean

12:55

up. And as he

12:56

washed himself off, he could

12:58

hear Tim still gurgling on his

13:00

own blood. He was still

13:02

alive for several minutes after

13:04

DC stabbed him. But when

13:06

he returned back to Tim, it was

13:08

clear that he was dead. Gacy

13:11

recalled feeling anxious. He

13:14

said he even contemplated calling

13:16

the police, but

13:17

given his asked conviction he knew

13:19

the cops wouldn't believe him if he said

13:21

it was an accident. Knowing

13:23

his mother would be home later that

13:25

day, Gacy quickly started

13:28

cleaning the blood on the carpet.

13:30

But what would he do with Tim's

13:32

body? He

13:33

thought for a second and that's when

13:35

it hit him. the

13:36

crawl space. There's

13:39

no way anyone would ever find

13:41

him there. And

13:43

with that, Gacy drags Tim's

13:45

body over to the living room closet.

13:47

He opens the crawl space trap

13:49

door and just throws his

13:51

body down in it.

13:52

I went out to the house,

13:54

jumped in a bed, got her

13:56

on, and we brought in a new year's

13:58

together. And

13:59

then I took her home. I

14:02

think I slept all that day.

14:06

We

14:08

had one o'clock in the morning. I

14:10

went down the ground, but

14:14

programmed block to pull up either.

14:16

That's when it kicked off. Should

14:18

I answer my question, well, I'm not doing nothing

14:21

in one go right around, I'll show

14:23

you the sites. They didn't have to leave it

14:25

till noon the next day. So we

14:27

start riding around, and we talked to

14:29

in general, We also talked about

14:31

sex. I asked him if he ever gotten to do

14:33

it with a guy. We were drinking.

14:35

I talked further about

14:37

sex. We both got into

14:39

oral sex both ways.

14:40

I told him

14:42

he can sleep there, and I said, we'll get up, and I'll

14:45

drive you back down the bus before that.

14:47

I went to lay down, some

14:49

startled me on a walk. And

14:52

when I looked in the doorway, he

14:54

had a knife in his hand and he

14:56

was coming at me. So I jumped

14:58

up and I razzled with

15:00

him. We we were

15:02

struggling back and forth. I

15:04

believe I stand the entire

15:06

four or five times in the chest. I didn't

15:08

go whether I should call it police or to

15:10

what I was afraid that it would sound

15:13

bad So I

15:15

opened up the crawl space, and

15:17

I proceeded to do a hold of bury a

15:19

nightmare. Tim's

15:20

body would lay there. and the cold,

15:22

dark space, all alone,

15:24

while his family wondered what on

15:26

earth happened to him. he

15:29

had just spent that Christmas with his aunt

15:31

and uncle and all of his cousins.

15:33

And he promised them that

15:35

once his train arrived in Glenwood,

15:37

he would give them a call, but that

15:40

call never came. And

15:42

Timothy would go unidentified for

15:44

years even after Gacy was

15:46

caught. Since he was from

15:48

Iowa, his family

15:50

probably never suspected that he was

15:52

one of Gacy's victims down in the

15:54

crawl

15:54

space. but

15:56

he was. He

15:57

was Casey's first victim,

16:00

but

16:00

he surely wouldn't be the last,

16:02

and it

16:02

wouldn't be long until he would be

16:05

joined by the other Now,

16:07

Gacy's mother would later come home and he

16:09

started to get a little anxious. Tim's

16:11

body was just laying there right under the

16:13

trap door in the living room closet.

16:15

and he knew it would only be a

16:17

matter of time until he started to smell.

16:19

So one night when his mother was away,

16:21

AC goes down into the crawl space, which

16:23

is only about two and a half feet deep,

16:25

and he digs a shallow grave for Timothy

16:27

McCoy. And then, as if it

16:29

never even happened, Casey goes on with

16:31

his life. Later that summer, his

16:33

mother eventually moved out. And in July

16:35

of nineteen seventy two, he and

16:37

Carol even got married at Saint Paul's

16:39

Lutheran Church. But all the

16:41

while, Casey was still ridden with

16:43

anxiety after this first kill.

16:45

Yes, he liked the feeling of killing, but he

16:47

was always scared that the police were going to come

16:49

knocking on his door. And this

16:51

experience made Gacy so paranoid that

16:53

he said he didn't have sex with another

16:55

male for years after. The next

16:57

day after that, I was know, with Carol,

16:59

and that's never happened anymore. That

17:02

was just a a nice weekend procedure.

17:05

I don't think that I

17:07

had another sexual relationship with

17:09

a male until nineteen

17:11

seventy four or seventy five. But

17:13

I don't think Casey was being

17:16

totally honest when he said this.

17:18

Maybe he didn't have sex with the male for years

17:20

after he killed Timothy McCoy, but he

17:22

definitely tried to. In

17:24

fact, nine days before he and Carol

17:26

got married, Casey was arrested yet

17:28

again. This

17:28

time, he was driving around when he

17:30

spotted a young man,

17:31

and he pulled him over as if he was

17:34

a cop. Gacy drove a black oldsmobile and he

17:36

had a red flashing light that he often put

17:38

on his dashboard, so he could have easily

17:40

been mistaken as an under officer.

17:42

Even more convincing, Casey was

17:44

known to carry fake police badges, which

17:46

is most likely what he did on this

17:48

night. He pulls the boy over, flashes

17:51

his badge, and forces him into his

17:53

car. And from there, Casey tried

17:55

to force the boy to have sex with him. But

17:57

luckily, he got away. Casey

17:59

would later be charged with aggravated battery

18:01

for this incident. But for whatever

18:03

reason, the case never made it

18:05

to trial. Which

18:06

is just so frustrating because

18:08

again, Casey was on parole.

18:11

And since he

18:11

had been released from prison, he

18:13

had been arrested twice now for

18:16

assaulting minors, and

18:18

they

18:18

still never sent him back to prison.

18:21

It's

18:21

unclear how he explained this

18:24

arrest to his new wife, or if he even

18:26

told her at all. But from

18:28

what I could

18:28

tell, Gacy and Carol were

18:31

pretty happy

18:31

during this time. According

18:34

to the people that knew the couple,

18:36

they were always going out with friends

18:38

and socializing out in Chicago.

18:40

They even

18:41

participated

18:42

in Ebola altogether,

18:44

but it was also pretty

18:46

obvious that Gacy was not in

18:48

love with Carol. Yes,

18:50

he cared for her, but

18:52

there was just something missing in

18:54

their relationship. It

18:57

almost felt as if getting married to her was just

18:59

a box he wanted to check off on his

19:01

list of life accomplishments.

19:04

Maybe being

19:04

married made him seem more normal.

19:07

Whatever it

19:07

was, it was clear that Guissey

19:10

was not satisfied in

19:12

his marriage.

19:16

Friends

19:17

would also say that Gacy was nice

19:19

to Carol, but he could also be very mean to

19:21

her at the snap of a finger. Gacy

19:23

was aggressive, but because Carol

19:25

was so passive, it seemed to work

19:27

for them. From what we could tell, Carol was

19:30

happy in the marriage, and most

19:32

importantly, her girls were happy with John

19:34

as their The only complaint Carol

19:36

had was the bad odor that started

19:38

emanating from their home. Casey

19:40

told her that it was probably just dead animals

19:42

down in the crawl space. and a solution

19:44

was to throw a bag of lime down in there, which did

19:46

not help with the smell. So she

19:48

just chalked it up to needing an exterminator.

19:51

but Casey absolutely refused to

19:53

call one. He couldn't have people snooping

19:55

around his home, finding his hidden

19:58

secrets. So one day, he told Carol that he put

20:00

some concrete down where he thought the dead animals

20:02

could have been. And the problem was

20:04

solved. And it was for the time

20:06

being. That was until

20:08

he started adding more bodies

20:10

to the graveyard down in the crawl

20:12

space.

20:12

But before we get into that, It's

20:15

important to talk about John

20:17

Gacy and his role in the

20:19

Chicago social scene. As

20:21

you

20:21

may know by now, Gacy was

20:24

very social and his reputation

20:26

meant a lot to him. He

20:28

wanted to be known by

20:30

everyone. but you have to start small if

20:32

you wanna end up there. So in

20:34

nineteen seventy three, he

20:36

started dipping into Chicago politics with

20:39

the Norwood Park Democratic Association.

20:43

And his role was to help people in

20:45

his community much like he

20:47

did with Chases. She

20:49

would help elderly people

20:51

that needed help around their home.

20:53

She would

20:53

take a snow plow through the streets.

20:56

and

20:56

he was also in charge of going out and getting people

20:58

to vote. And Gacy

21:01

was really good at it. Not

21:03

only was he a hard worker

21:05

who took the job very

21:06

seriously, but he was friendly

21:09

and charming. People liked

21:11

him. In

21:11

case he really felt a sense of

21:14

accomplishment with this role. He

21:16

liked knowing that he was making a

21:18

difference in his community. Maybe

21:20

in his mind, it made up

21:22

for the fact that there was body of

21:24

a young boy in his crawl

21:26

space, and he was

21:28

determined to keep that hidden.

21:30

In this year nineteen seventy three was

21:33

a busy year for Daisy. Not

21:35

only was

21:35

he climbing Chicago's political

21:38

collater, but he was also focused

21:40

on growing his business.

21:42

Shortly after

21:43

he got out of prison, he

21:45

wanted to make something of himself. He was

21:47

a hard

21:48

worker who liked to work with his hands,

21:51

so he decided he was going to open

21:53

a construction business. which

21:55

was perfect for him because

21:57

that also meant he could hire a bunch of

21:59

young men to do the work. And

22:02

he and his mom actually came up

22:04

with name the company,

22:06

painting, decorating, and maintenance

22:09

contractors, otherwise

22:10

known as PDF.

22:12

and

22:12

it was in nineteen seventy three when the business

22:15

opened. But the middle of

22:17

seventeen twenty started going

22:19

to decorating and everything. What was your

22:21

name of your company?

22:24

PDF.

22:24

What is your stand for?

22:30

For Gacy's business, he bought

22:32

a quintessential creepy van

22:35

except his was black. And on the side,

22:37

it read PDM contractors, commercial general contractors,

22:40

and then their phone number, which was 4571614

22:44

He also had

22:44

a business card bright red

22:47

lettering. And on the top left corner, there was

22:49

an animated human working on a house

22:51

with a big smile on their face.

22:53

And as

22:53

soon as PDM opened, Casey worked

22:55

hard to grow his business. He hired a bunch of

22:58

young men as his employees. And soon

23:00

enough, it started doing really

23:02

well. And at this point, it seemed

23:04

like Gacy was really trying to get his life

23:06

together. He played the role of the

23:08

family man, the husband who worked hard for

23:10

his family. But after a while, it

23:12

seemed like Gacy got a little bored with

23:14

his life. People closed to him and

23:16

Carol started to notice that he was

23:18

becoming more distant the more

23:20

he worked. And after a while, his

23:22

wife Carol said that his work started

23:24

taking over his life. John Gacy

23:26

was barely ever home, and when he

23:28

did come home, It was often around two or

23:30

three in the morning. According to the book,

23:32

Berry Dreams, Carol said,

23:34

quote, it got to be he was working from

23:36

early morning. He'd come home, have a fast

23:38

break, something to eat, and just do

23:40

paperwork or phone calling, and go right back to work

23:42

again. End

23:42

quote. Casey

23:43

even made a little man cave for

23:45

himself, like his father used to have. It had

23:47

a built

23:48

in bar, a pool table, and just

23:50

like his father, Carol and the girls were

23:52

never allowed in there. even

23:54

after an entire day's work, Carol would

23:56

say that John would come home and immediately go

23:58

into his man cave for hours, and

24:00

she never knew what he was doing in

24:03

there. After a while, she started getting lonely.

24:05

She didn't want to complain because she knew

24:07

he was working really hard. But at the same

24:10

time, she felt like she never saw her husband

24:12

anymore. Some nights John would come home past

24:14

midnight and she expected him to hop

24:16

into bed. but instead he would come

24:18

in, get dressed, and then leave

24:20

again. And any time she asked what he was

24:22

doing, he would say that he had a bid or a

24:24

building he needed to check on.

24:26

which

24:26

was strange because who works at that

24:28

hour? One night, Casey was out

24:30

working very late. His

24:33

wife Carol said that she woke up randomly in the

24:35

night because she kept hearing his

24:38

car come in and out of the

24:40

driveway. She said she tried to fall

24:42

back asleep, but she couldn't.

24:44

So instead, she goes into

24:46

the living room and turns on the TV.

24:49

Shortly

24:49

after, Daisy walks in

24:52

and he shocked to see her

24:54

awake. What are you up

24:56

to? He asks, And

24:58

Carol said that he asked this terrified

25:00

look on his face, like

25:02

he

25:02

had just been caught doing something

25:05

he shouldn't. I couldn't

25:06

sleep. She tells him.

25:08

Casey tells Carol that he just came to

25:10

the house to grab something, but

25:12

He has work to do so he had to

25:15

leave. And at

25:16

this point, Carol was used to it,

25:18

but she

25:18

couldn't hope but notice that

25:21

he left without grabbing anything

25:23

suspicious of her husband, Carol

25:26

Peaks out of the curtains, and

25:28

she sees him driving away with a

25:30

young, blonde haired boy in the

25:32

passenger seat of his car.

25:34

Carol was rightfully suspicious.

25:37

Instead of spending time with her and

25:39

the

25:39

girls, he was always bringing over

25:41

these young men and

25:43

spending hours with them drinking in

25:45

the garage. And the garage was a

25:47

separate part of the house, so Gacy

25:49

was able to do whatever he wanted without Carol

25:52

knowing. And keep in

25:53

mind, Carol was well aware of

25:56

Casey's homosexual tendencies.

25:59

After all, he

25:59

told her he had gone to jail for getting

26:02

involved with a guy. So

26:04

she

26:04

knew about that part of him.

26:07

aware of what he was doing. He just felt he was

26:09

buying more for the men and not

26:11

for the women because he could not function

26:13

with a woman. So

26:15

seeing all of these boys coming over

26:17

after hours just didn't sit

26:19

right with her and eventually their

26:21

sex life started to be affected as

26:24

well. When

26:25

Daisy would come home, she would try

26:27

to have sex with him,

26:29

but he always claimed he was too tired

26:32

from work. Sometimes, he wouldn't even

26:34

sleep in their bed, and he would just

26:36

come home and pass out on

26:38

the couch. So

26:39

Carol eventually

26:40

confronts her husband and she

26:42

asks him if he's been sexually involved

26:44

with the young man that he's

26:46

constantly bringing over. GC

26:49

denies it, but after a while,

26:51

the relationship starts to

26:52

dwindle. Cheryl and I

26:54

were fighting over six. It was just that I was

26:56

tired. Working seven days a week, you

26:59

tired. You just don't wanna do

27:01

it. Here's what Carol told

27:03

CBS Chicago about their relationship at

27:05

the time. He would not have much to do with

27:07

me. We hardly had any sex. And

27:10

he found it very difficult to

27:12

have anything to do with me. And anytime

27:14

Carol would accuse him of sleeping

27:16

with these boys, Daisy

27:18

would

27:18

just gaslight her.

27:20

and he

27:21

would say that she was planting

27:23

a seed. And he says

27:25

that eventually she accused him

27:27

so much that he decided he

27:29

might as well just start sleeping

27:31

with them. If you're

27:32

going to be accused of something, then

27:35

you might as well

27:35

reap the rewards of those

27:38

accusations. You would later say, as

27:40

if

27:40

it's her fault that he started

27:42

sexually assaulting these young men.

27:44

When she

27:45

was accusing me, why didn't I have young boys

27:47

working for me? You know, was I doing with

27:49

the boys as no. I was being

27:51

accused of it all the time. So

27:54

I I just find it's a fucking you know, I'm

27:56

accused of it, so god. They ain't much obliged to go out

27:58

and do it. which

27:59

I get. Now

28:02

as you may know, a number of John

28:05

Wayne Gacy's victims were boys that he

28:07

employed at his company. PDM contractors.

28:09

The people always asked him why he only

28:11

employed young men when he could hire

28:13

older and experienced workers.

28:15

But Casey always made it seem like he was trying to be

28:18

a mentor to these young boys. You

28:20

know, he grew up in an environment

28:22

where he didn't really have a

28:24

mentor. he was just trying to help these boys out. And

28:26

I found a

28:26

lot of good senior young people working.

28:28

It's just that they had. They have somebody

28:30

that was understanding Till a lot

28:32

of them. I was almost like a father's room.

28:35

But in

28:35

reality, Casey was attracted

28:38

to these young kids. and

28:40

being their boss gave him a sense

28:42

of power over them. In one

28:44

incident, Carol recalled that in nineteen

28:46

seventy three, the same year Casey

28:48

started his business boy came over to their

28:50

house, met Gacy outside, and

28:52

started beating him up right there in the

28:54

front yard. When asked why he

28:56

got jumped, Gacy claimed that the boy

28:58

was mad because he withheld one of his

29:00

checks. He went on and on and on about how

29:02

the guy didn't do a good painting job,

29:04

so Gacy didn't pay him. Carol

29:06

said she didn't learn until years later

29:08

that the real reason her husband had been jumped

29:10

was because he invited that boy to

29:12

Florida for a job. But on the first night there,

29:14

Casey raped him. Afterwards, the

29:16

boy was so scared to sleep under the

29:18

same roof. He ended up just sleeping on

29:20

the beach all week. So as

29:22

you can see, Casey was getting more and

29:24

more risky when it came to these boys that weren't

29:26

for him. Another employee of Casey's

29:28

was a boy named Tony who

29:31

started

29:31

working for him when he was just sixteen

29:34

years old. Tony

29:36

said that Gacy always made it seem like

29:38

he was your friend rather than

29:40

your boss. and that he was

29:42

always trying to help them out any

29:43

chance he could. If a

29:45

boy needed a ride home, Daisy

29:47

was happy to drive them. If they

29:49

needed extra

29:50

hours of work, dicey

29:52

would happily give it to them.

29:54

So Tony worked long hours trying

29:56

to make some extra money for

29:59

himself. But one day

30:00

in the summer of nineteen seventy

30:03

five, while he was doing

30:04

demolition work for

30:05

Gacy, he accidentally stepped on

30:07

a nail that went through

30:09

his foot. Casey quickly brought Tony

30:12

to the hospital and

30:13

he was out of work for a while.

30:16

Then one night around midnight

30:18

Tony remembered

30:18

sharing a knock on his front

30:21

door. His parents were on

30:23

vacation, so he went to open the door to

30:25

find his boss. John

30:27

Wayne Gacy standing on his front porch.

30:29

Hey, I just wanted to check-in and

30:31

see if everything's okay with your foot and

30:33

make sure you're alright. Tony noticed

30:35

that Gacy had a bottle of wine tucked

30:37

under his arm, so he invited

30:39

him inside. After all,

30:42

it's his boss. And I'm sure he

30:44

appreciated that Casey cared enough

30:46

to stop by and check on him.

30:48

So the two come inside and start up

30:50

a conversation. And eventually,

30:52

Gacy brings up the fact that Tony

30:54

is a wrestler. And there

30:56

was kind of this running joke

30:58

with Tony and the other employees at PDM where

31:00

it would always call him the wrestler

31:02

because he was on the high school wrestling

31:04

team, and he was a big guy.

31:07

So Gacy tells Tony. So you're good

31:09

at wrestling, I bet I could take you.

31:11

Loving a friendly

31:12

competition, Tony takes him up

31:14

on the offer. the two began

31:16

to wrestle on the floor. In

31:19

Tony's mind, they were just messing

31:21

around, having fun,

31:22

but Gacy was fully aroused.

31:26

And

31:26

after a few minutes of wrestling,

31:28

he whips out a pair of handcuffs,

31:30

puts them around Tony's wrists,

31:33

knocks him to the ground, then just walks

31:35

out of the room. Tony

31:38

was a little caught off

31:40

guard, but At the same time,

31:42

Casey was known to do things like

31:44

this. Tony said that

31:46

even in the workplace, He

31:47

was known to kind of push people

31:50

to their limits.

31:51

Purposefully stressed them out to see what

31:53

they could handle. Tony

31:55

was under the impression that this

31:57

was just one of those tests that

31:59

Casey was

31:59

known to do.

32:01

So Tony sitting there on the ground

32:04

with the handcuffs still on his

32:06

wrists, and he

32:06

notices that one of the cuffs was a

32:09

little loose. so

32:10

he wiggled his hand and

32:13

eventually he slipped out of

32:15

it.

32:15

Not long after, dicey walks

32:17

back into the room and there's a look of shock

32:20

on his face when he sees that Tony

32:22

got out of the cuffs. He

32:24

wasn't expecting that. And

32:26

Tony then walks up to Gacy,

32:29

throws him on the ground, and puts the

32:30

cuffs on his wrists. Gacy

32:33

sits there quietly

32:35

for a few moments. feeling defeated

32:37

before saying

32:38

You were the only one that not only got

32:40

out of the handcuffs, but you got that

32:43

on me. And Tony remembered

32:44

thinking that this comment was a little

32:47

weird. Is this a

32:48

normal thing he does with people?

32:51

Little did

32:52

he know that, yes.

32:54

That

32:54

is precisely what John Wayne

32:57

Dacey would do to incapacitate his

33:00

victims. Luckily,

33:00

Tony was able

33:01

to get away. After Casey

33:03

gets out of

33:04

the cuffs, he leaves Tony's home,

33:06

most likely upset that the night didn't

33:08

go as planned. But just

33:10

two weeks later, another employee

33:12

of Gacy's would go

33:15

missing. John Bukovich was seventeen

33:17

years old and everyone that knew him

33:19

described him as a good kid and a very

33:21

hard worker. And in nineteen

33:23

seventy five, he was needing a job and

33:25

somehow got connected with John

33:27

Wayne Tony Antanucci,

33:29

the guy that escaped Gacy's cuffs, said

33:31

that he and John worked on several projects

33:34

together, and over time, they became

33:36

good friends. and they bonded over their

33:38

shared love of cars. Tony said

33:40

that because both John Buckovich

33:42

and John Gacy had the same name, they

33:44

would call Buckovich Little John and

33:46

Gacy Big John. And according to

33:48

Tony, Gacy and the other John

33:50

had a unique relationship compared to

33:52

other employees at PBM.

33:54

THEY WERE REALLY CLOSE, ALMOST LIKE A

33:56

FATHER AND SON, BUT THEIR

33:59

RELATIONSHIP WOULD LATER

33:59

TURN SEXUAL. Reporter: JOHN BUCKEMIC CAN'T

34:02

WORK FOR ME. VERY NINE aged

34:04

kid. I treated him

34:06

on a father's son relationship.

34:08

I also got a no sexual relationship

34:10

with him, employing me

34:12

and we've it's likely

34:14

that Gacy manipulated Buckovich

34:16

into thinking he had to perform sex acts

34:18

on him so he could keep his job,

34:20

or

34:21

maybe he promised him more money. Gacy

34:23

would later say

34:23

that some of these sexual relationships were consensual,

34:25

but we really want to push the fact that

34:27

most of these victims

34:30

were minors, and he was a

34:32

master manipulator. So these boys

34:34

likely felt they had to do what he

34:36

said. But anyways, Tony

34:38

Antinucci would later say that just weeks

34:40

after his strange encounter with Casey.

34:42

His friend and coworker John

34:44

just disappeared.

34:45

John was last seen

34:47

on July

34:47

thirty first nineteen

34:50

seventy five. and he would never

34:52

be seen alive again, leaving his family absolutely

34:54

devastated. Here is John's

34:56

mother talking

34:57

about her son's disappearance.

35:00

When the police

35:04

found out

35:04

that seventeen year old John was missing

35:08

they didn't really take it seriously, and they told his

35:10

family that he was likely just a

35:13

runaway. After all, in the

35:14

state of Illinois, seventeen year weren't

35:18

considered juveniles, and they

35:20

were allowed

35:20

to go missing if they wanted to.

35:22

But John's

35:23

family never believed that to

35:25

be the case. When Tony Antinucci

35:27

finally came back to work after

35:29

his foot healed, he went up to Gacy and

35:31

asked if

35:31

he was going to be

35:34

working with Little John on their next

35:36

project. But Gacy quickly told

35:38

him.

35:38

Oh, little John

35:40

actually quit. He won't be coming around

35:44

anymore. Tony thought

35:44

that this was strange because he

35:47

and John were friends. John would

35:49

have told him if he

35:51

was going to quit. but

35:53

even more strange was that John left his car

35:56

behind. Now, if you remember,

35:58

Tony

35:58

and John used to bond

35:59

over their

36:02

love of cars, and he was extra proud of

36:04

his nineteen sixty eight

36:06

Dodge. There was no way that

36:08

John would have run away and left

36:10

that car. So

36:12

what happened to him? Well, according

36:14

to

36:15

John Gacy himself, he

36:17

invited Bukovich over his house

36:19

on the night of July thirty first

36:22

for some drinks.

36:24

This wasn't the first time Bouquet

36:26

had gone

36:27

to Gacy's home, so he had

36:29

no reason to think that this would be the last night

36:31

of his life. Casey claimed that the two were

36:33

in

36:33

his garage, drinking, and

36:36

smoking joint. all

36:38

of a

36:38

sudden, Bukovitch started getting belligerent.

36:42

Apparently, Daisy

36:43

owed him some

36:45

money and he wanted it right then

36:47

and there. Casey told

36:49

him that he didn't have the

36:51

money right then, so book of

36:52

it shelled out. Fine. Did

36:55

I quit. Casey

36:56

was quickly losing control of the

36:58

situation. He didn't want

37:00

Bukovic to quit, especially

37:02

since he had so much control

37:05

over him. So thinking quickly, he grabs

37:07

a pair of handcuffs line

37:09

nearby, puts

37:10

them around

37:11

Bukovich's wrists, and tells him You

37:13

can't

37:13

go anywhere now. Bugovic

37:15

attempts to get away,

37:17

but before he can do so,

37:19

he's thrown to the ground. Casey

37:21

then grabs a rope

37:24

line nearby. and places it around his neck. And

37:26

over the next few minutes,

37:28

he pulls it tight,

37:30

slowly strangling him

37:32

to death. By

37:34

the end

37:34

of that night, Casey had murdered his

37:37

second victim. And the

37:38

next thing Casey said he remembers was waking

37:41

up the next morning and

37:43

back. and he honestly thought that it was

37:45

all a dream. But then he walked over

37:47

to the garage and there

37:49

was Bukovic's body lying

37:51

on the

37:52

floor with

37:53

the rope still tightly wrapped around his neck. Casey

37:56

later said that his, quote,

37:58

eyes were closed, but his face

37:59

was red. that

38:02

kind of blue red and his mouth wide open.

38:06

Thinking quickly,

38:08

he digs a hole in his garage

38:10

floor and places his body

38:12

down into the earth. Casey

38:14

would later say, quote, it was hard

38:17

to get the hole big enough so

38:19

I had to bend him over. And

38:21

by this time, he was stiff as

38:23

a board. I just barely got him

38:26

in the hole, and I

38:27

had to jump up and down on him

38:29

to bend him over and get

38:31

him deep enough inside

38:34

there. End quote, Afterwards,

38:36

Casey covered the hole with

38:38

concrete, cementing John Bukovich

38:41

in the ground, forever. Now,

38:43

like we mentioned, little

38:45

John left his car behind,

38:47

and after the murders, it ended up on

38:49

a random street

38:52

with the keys still in the ignition. But Kvitch's parents

38:54

also tell police that before he disappeared,

38:56

he was going to go to his boss to

38:58

confront him about some money that he was owed.

39:01

So before long, the police come knocking

39:03

on Gacy's door. But he assures them

39:05

that he hasn't seen Buddkovic. And the

39:08

last time he saw him, he was getting in a

39:10

car with a few of his friends. And

39:12

with that, the police mark him

39:14

up as a runaway even though

39:16

he left behind his car, wallet,

39:18

and cash. The Buddovich even called Gacy

39:21

themselves hoping to get more answers, but

39:23

all he told them was that he was sorry about

39:25

what happened to their son, but he

39:27

couldn't help them. Over the next few years, the Buckovic

39:29

family called the Norwood Police Department nearly

39:32

every week, urging them to take a

39:34

closer look at Gacy, but they

39:36

never did. In fact, the

39:38

police department eventually refused to

39:40

take any more calls from the

39:42

family. And when the police

39:43

left Casey's home

39:45

that day, they never came back to question

39:47

him again. He

39:49

felt exhilarated. His first

39:51

murder

39:51

left him feeling

39:53

a little paranoid. It was also messy

39:55

with all the blood, which he didn't like. But

39:58

this

39:59

one

39:59

was exciting. method

40:02

of killing that gave him the best

40:04

feeling he had ever felt.

40:06

Casey had now

40:07

murdered two young boys and got

40:09

away with it. he

40:11

felt invincible and he knew

40:13

that this definitely wasn't going to

40:15

be his last kill.

40:18

Tony Antinucci said that not

40:20

long after little John went

40:22

missing. He went over to Casey's house and

40:24

noticed that the floor in the garage was

40:26

covered in concrete. And he

40:28

remembered thinking that the concrete slab

40:30

seemed a little unnecessary.

40:32

But never in a million years did

40:34

he ever think that his

40:36

friend was dead. underneath

40:38

it. And it was

40:40

after this murder when Daisy's

40:42

marriage took a turn for the

40:44

worse.

40:45

According to Carol, One night, Gacy comes

40:47

into bed for the first time in a while. And after

40:49

they had sex, he

40:51

looks at her and says, last

40:54

time

40:54

I'm ever going to have sex with

40:56

you.

40:56

Carol was taken aback.

40:59

And she honestly thought he

41:01

was joking, but he wasn't. the was

41:03

He wasn't

41:04

interested in her anymore.

41:06

And that's

41:07

because his sexual urges

41:09

were being satisfied elsewhere. It

41:12

also didn't help that many people in the

41:14

neighborhood started gossiping about

41:16

all the young man Gaisy would bring around.

41:19

Carol had finally had enough. And

41:22

by October of that year,

41:24

she filed for divorce. At

41:25

the doctor Bitch, there was a change

41:28

in the marriage led point

41:30

forward. Okay. Trust for

41:32

divorce in seventy five. She got the divorce

41:34

in February of seventy six

41:36

moved out. It was an

41:37

unhealthy situation because people in

41:39

the neighborhood were were making

41:41

remarks about me.

41:44

I would go out drinking and I know I was cruising

41:46

down at the park. And after Carol left, John Wayne Gacy

41:49

got really into Chicago politics.

41:52

more so than he had One his neighbors on

41:55

Summerdale Avenue was actually

41:57

a Democratic precinct captain And

42:00

after talking with him for a while, Casey volunteered

42:02

to be his assistant. Years prior,

42:04

Casey had bigger dreams like

42:07

running for but he knew that would never happen since he

42:09

had gone to prison. So he aimed a little lower

42:11

and decided it would be fun to be

42:13

the advisor who had the power

42:15

behind the throne. And Gacy

42:18

found it easy to move up the ladder in

42:20

Chicago politics. After all,

42:22

it was a lot like the work he did with the J.

42:24

C. back in Iowa. When they needed him, he showed

42:26

up. Casey and his PDM employees would

42:29

often volunteer to clean up

42:31

the Democratic headquarters. set up chairs

42:33

for big meetings, or build barricades for different events. It didn't matter

42:36

the task. Casey was always there

42:38

ready to

42:40

help. He eventually was appointed the secretary for the street lighting

42:42

district, where he would put up and replace

42:44

street lights in town. Then after that, he

42:46

was appointed the Democratic precinct captain.

42:50

which was a pretty big title to hold. Over

42:52

the years, he really made a name for himself.

42:54

Nearly everyone in the area

42:56

knew who John Wayne Gacy was,

42:59

he even became friends with members of

43:01

the police force, mayors,

43:04

and politicians.

43:05

In nineteen seventy five, Casey was even the director

43:07

of the Chicago's

43:08

annual Polish parade. There is

43:10

a right wing, there's a wrong wing,

43:13

there's my wing. you have

43:16

to have organization, you have to have

43:18

leadership, and you have to

43:20

be able

43:22

to not denied respect, but commanded.

43:24

And the same thing when missus Carter came,

43:26

but they were trying to tell me how to do things. I didn't

43:28

give it to them before

43:30

they were. Gacy was in charge of making sure all the

43:32

floats and bands and

43:33

mergers came out on time. And this

43:35

was a very big deal

43:37

for Gacy because Every Chicago

43:40

politician was at this parade, and

43:42

they all talked to Gacy to

43:44

thank

43:45

him for his work. But little

43:46

did they know? The hands they were shaking were the

43:49

same hands used to murder

43:51

young men around town. Nineteen

43:54

seventy five is also the year

43:56

that Gacy created

43:57

O Go The Cloud, and he

43:59

actually

43:59

joined a group called the Jolly

44:02

Joker Crown Club. which

44:04

consisted of about five to six

44:06

other people who dressed up as clowns

44:08

for their community. Casey

44:10

was excited about Pogo the clown.

44:13

and he even got his costume

44:15

custom made. There's probably a

44:17

picture that pops up in your mind when we

44:19

say Pogo

44:20

the cloud. a picture

44:22

of Pogo, make sure to go to our Instagram

44:24

where we post all of the

44:27

pictures for each episode, but Gacy was

44:29

not a fun looking clown. In

44:32

infamous picture we're describing, his

44:34

face is painted

44:35

white. His mouth is painted

44:37

red in this large,

44:39

creepy looking smile. and there are

44:42

blue painted triangles over his

44:44

eyes. And clowns are

44:46

actually not supposed to do their

44:48

makeup this way. Gacy's face

44:50

paint had very harsh lines,

44:52

which is actually scary

44:54

for children. Real clowns

44:56

that are fun are supposed

44:58

to do rounded edges for their

45:00

face paint. It makes

45:01

them look less scary,

45:04

at least that's what they teach you in which

45:06

is a real thing

45:07

by the way. But Gacy

45:09

didn't follow

45:09

those rules. He

45:12

said

45:12

he didn't need to go to clown school because, quote,

45:14

it just came naturally to

45:16

me. In a way, I guess

45:18

you could say I love to perform.

45:21

End quote.

45:22

But he probably should have

45:24

gone to clown school because I know

45:26

if

45:26

I were a child and I saw

45:28

Pogo, I would probably

45:30

take off screamy,

45:32

but Gacy absolutely loved it.

45:34

And on

45:35

special occasions like Easter,

45:38

Halloween, and Christmas, He would

45:40

dress up

45:40

and entertain people at parades,

45:42

nursing homes,

45:43

or children's hospitals. When he

45:45

would go to parades, case

45:47

he said, quote, You have to get

45:49

into the mood, real festive before you even put on the makeup, and you have to be one festive

45:52

son of a bitch all afternoon.

45:54

Sometimes I had to work, didn't even get

45:56

any sleep, But

45:58

when there was a parade, I had to be happy as shit all

45:59

afternoon running along the parade route for about

46:02

four hours. When he

46:04

would

46:05

go to children's hospitals, he

46:07

was bringing laughter to children who had been in horrific accidents, or kids

46:09

who didn't have much longer to

46:11

live. Casey would later

46:14

say, quote, Pogo was

46:15

a tranquilizer for me. When I was

46:17

Pogo, I was in another world. Maybe

46:19

Pogo was a way of running away

46:22

for myself. I enjoyed making people happy. I loved the laughing

46:24

faces, especially the children. Why else

46:26

would I do it? If I didn't have the time

46:28

for myself, end

46:30

quote.

46:30

But Gacy didn't just use Pogo to

46:33

make children happy. He also claimed

46:35

that when he dressed up as

46:37

Pogo, he would, quote, Hunk

46:40

girl's boobs. And he would

46:42

never get in trouble for it

46:44

because he was a clown. No. You

46:46

probably you hiding

46:48

your image. If there are

46:49

things that you could do that you wouldn't do

46:51

as a person? No. I can't

46:53

live with

46:54

anything. I was killed with

46:57

a murder. If

46:58

children were annoying him or

47:01

pulling on his costume,

47:03

he said you would sometimes whisper cuss words

47:05

at them and then laugh when they

47:07

ran off cry. Daisy

47:10

also used

47:12

Pogo to advance in his political

47:14

pursuits. If someone in his party was

47:16

having a parade or any type of

47:18

event, Casey would offer

47:20

his

47:20

services making

47:23

a new connection along the it's around this time

47:25

when Gacy becomes kind of

47:27

obsessed with clowns.

47:30

He even

47:31

started collecting clown artwork to hang around

47:33

his home. Another interesting

47:36

fact was that Gacy was

47:39

also known to have these elaborate

47:41

yard parties, which were pretty

47:43

much just huge barbecues that he

47:45

had in his backyard. and

47:47

they were always themed. Some

47:50

were Hawaiian, others were

47:52

old western. One year

47:54

for the fourth of July, they had a

47:56

colonial party where Casey wore a white wig and

47:58

dressed up as Paul

47:59

Revere, and these parties

48:02

were

48:02

huge. Sometimes

48:04

there were over four hundred people, all

48:06

piled into a

48:07

small backyard. And as you

48:10

can

48:10

imagine, Gacy loved having

48:13

these parties where everyone in his

48:16

community got together and

48:18

celebrated, and

48:19

he invited everyone. He

48:21

wanted

48:21

everyone in town to be there,

48:24

especially if you were

48:26

influential. Before the party, he

48:28

would get to PDM boys to line his backyard with

48:30

tables, and he always had a ton of food

48:32

for everyone to enjoy

48:34

while desocialized. It's

48:37

been said that Casey was the perfect

48:40

host. He drank just

48:42

enough to where he was letting loose

48:44

and having fun, but he

48:46

never drank too much. He

48:48

couldn't have people wandering around in his

48:50

home without him knowing. But while

48:52

Gacy was having these parties

48:54

and building his reputation around Chicago,

48:57

He was also

48:58

building a reputation near the Greyhound

49:00

bus stations. By nineteen

49:02

seventy six, he and Carol's divorce

49:06

was finalized so he could finally do whatever he

49:08

wanted without her breathing down his

49:10

neck. And on nights where he was

49:12

in the mood to have sex with a

49:14

young boy,

49:16

he would get in his car and drive around until

49:18

he found someone. Then he would

49:20

pull up and ask them to come

49:23

home with

49:24

him. young twin

49:26

cut barrel of me. I felt

49:28

that I would probably have the upper hander

49:30

to finally image over. No. It's

49:32

the innocent ones. Those were the

49:34

ones I'd pick up. And he always

49:37

offered these boys something in return so

49:39

they had incentive to go

49:41

with him. He often offered drugs or he

49:43

would tell them he could give them

49:45

a job or just a good

49:48

time. And once they were in

49:50

Gacy's car, Gacy viewed

49:52

them as his

49:53

property. In his

49:54

mind, he could do whatever he

49:56

wanted with them because they

49:58

were his When

49:59

you're busy or in hell, you wanna

50:02

satisfy yourself more? We

50:04

did. And through seeking

50:06

out different people for sex, that I

50:08

developed a hatred form. He brought

50:10

him for an hour. He brought him for

50:13

two hours. He brought somebody to do

50:15

what you want with it. They're

50:17

to me. They're not a human being. It's

50:22

like you grown to the store. If you

50:24

buy something, You

50:26

bring it home and you just say you don't like it. You wanna it. It choose

50:28

to break because you paid for it.

50:32

he

50:34

called it cruising when Gacy would drive around looking for

50:36

sex, and he cruised a lot.

50:38

No matter what time of day, if Gacy

50:40

was near the area where he would pick

50:43

up these he would drive by, get his fix, and then kick

50:45

them out of his car like trash. Casey would

50:48

later say, quote, I didn't want to be

50:50

down there

50:50

cruising, but then I always said,

50:53

As long as I'm here, I might as well get my rocks

50:55

off because I didn't

50:56

have the time to be doing that. And if I

50:58

was there, I could get it over with. In the

51:00

next that, I would find myself out cruising

51:02

again. because anyone who knows me knows the one thing I always I

51:04

always say, I haven't got the

51:05

time. So if I was already cruising,

51:08

even

51:08

though I didn't consciously set out

51:10

to, I would look for someone who'd do

51:12

it quick, you know, blow me and get the fuck

51:14

out of my sight, you piece of shit.

51:16

End quote.

51:17

It was a

51:18

quick animal thing, Gacy

51:20

would later say. that if any of these boys would try to raise

51:23

the price or he didn't like their services, he

51:25

would pull up to a vending machine, give

51:27

them a quarter and ask them

51:29

to get Then as soon as they got

51:31

out of the car, he would speed off, only giving them

51:33

a single quarter for their work. He didn't

51:35

think of these boys

51:38

as human. There was simply his property for the time he paid for

51:40

them, and he could treat them however he

51:42

wanted to. Now, Gacy

51:44

claims that

51:44

he doesn't remember a lot of the murders

51:47

from the year nineteen seventy six.

51:50

And because of that, we don't know

51:52

exactly what happened to some of

51:54

these boys.

51:54

boy But we

51:56

do know that his first murder in

51:58

seventy six was of eighteen year

52:01

old Daryl Samson, Daryl was young with blind

52:03

shaggy hair born in West

52:06

Virginia, and he had actually just

52:08

run away from

52:10

home because he had some

52:12

curfew tickets he was trying to

52:14

avoid. And while he

52:15

was out around Chicago, he

52:17

came into contact with

52:19

John Wayne Gacy. Darryl's body would actually be

52:21

the last body investigators would

52:24

find inside of Gacy's home when he was

52:26

finally caught.

52:29

At the time of Daryl's

52:31

disappearance,

52:32

Gacy was renovating his dining room.

52:34

And since there was already a big hole

52:36

in the floor, he just threw Daryl's

52:38

body in it, along with some

52:40

discarded coke cans he was drinking

52:43

at the time. Then about five weeks

52:45

after Darryl's murder,

52:46

Casey was ready to kill again.

52:48

And on May

52:50

fourteenth, fourteen He

52:52

spots fifteen year old Randy Raffette. Randy

52:56

never

52:56

had the easiest life. In

52:58

fact,

52:58

when he was fourteen, He

53:01

was jumped

53:02

by two guys who stabbed him

53:04

in the heart, lungs, and liver.

53:06

Luckily, he survived in

53:09

his stab wounds later help identify him as one

53:11

of the boys in the crawl

53:14

space.

53:14

Randy also didn't have the

53:15

best home

53:18

life. And when

53:19

things got bad, he would often run away for a few days

53:21

at a time, but he always

53:23

came back

53:24

no matter

53:26

what.

53:26

what Then

53:28

on May fourteenth after walking around Chicago's

53:31

Uptown area, Randy was

53:33

picked

53:33

up by Gacy and

53:35

never seen again. But after murdering

53:37

Randy, Daisy still had the desire

53:39

to kill. Usually, there was

53:41

a cooling off period, but

53:43

not this time.

53:46

Almost

53:46

immediately after putting Randy in the crawl space, Casey

53:49

took to the streets again,

53:51

looking for another victim.

53:54

And

53:54

as he's driving around the outskirts of Chicago, he spots

53:57

fourteen year old

53:59

Sam Stapleton. Sam

54:01

and Randy were fat were actually really

54:04

good friends. And on

54:06

this night, Sam was

54:07

walking back home from his

54:09

sister's house when Gacy pulled up

54:11

to him his car. Like we mentioned, Gacy

54:14

usually offered his victims booze

54:16

or weed as

54:18

an incentive. which is

54:20

most likely what happened

54:22

here. Sam Stapleton got

54:24

into Gacy's car and was

54:26

brought back to his house having no

54:28

idea that his friend Randy was

54:30

just there, hours prior,

54:32

and that his body was lying

54:34

beneath them in the crawl

54:36

space. And by

54:37

the end of the night, Sam's body

54:39

would end up there too.

54:42

In fact, Sam and Randy

54:44

were actually found lying right

54:46

to each other in the crawl space.

54:48

Sam was Casey's youngest

54:50

victim, and he would later

54:52

be identified by a bracelet that

54:55

was still wrapped around his wrist when their bodies were discovered. Less

54:57

than a month later, in

54:59

June of nineteen seventy six,

55:02

Gacy was ready to kill again, and his next victim

55:04

would be seventeen year old Michael Bonnen.

55:06

Michael was a good kid who had

55:08

a bright future. He also had a

55:11

lot of friends on June third nineteen seventy six,

55:13

he was in his neighborhood playing basketball with

55:15

a few of his friends when he told one of

55:17

them that he was going to

55:19

catch the bus and get something to eat before he went home.

55:21

But Michael Bonnet never came home. While he was

55:24

out, he was picked up by John

55:26

Gacy and would later be found in the

55:28

crawl space. When he

55:30

didn't come home, his family was worried

55:32

sick, and his dad blamed himself for his

55:34

son's disappearance. Patty Vasquez,

55:36

Mike's half sister, said in a

55:38

Netflix interview that her dad would go on drinking benches and

55:41

then come home crying saying, I'm going to burn

55:43

in hell. I should have been a better dad

55:45

to Mike. His family tried to go

55:47

to the police. but as usual, they just considered Mike

55:49

a runaway. But his family knew that

55:52

wasn't the case. And after weeks of not

55:54

hearing from him, they knew something

55:56

horrible had happened. Those

55:58

fears would be confirmed when police would

56:00

later find Mike's fishing license inside

56:02

of Casey's home. Gacy was

56:04

known to take trophies from his

56:06

victims, and this was one of them.

56:08

Michael was now

56:08

one of the voice inside of the

56:11

crawl space. And by now,

56:12

Daisy was killing more frequently

56:14

than ever before. His

56:16

first kill was in nineteen seventy

56:19

two when he didn't until again

56:21

until nineteen seventy five. But starting in April of

56:23

seventy six, he averaged about

56:25

two murders per

56:28

month And after killing Michael Bonan, he

56:30

would take his next victim about a week

56:33

later. William or Billy

56:35

Carol was sixteen years

56:38

old, And he was last seen on his older brother's

56:40

birthday in June of nineteen

56:42

seventy six. Billy left

56:46

his home that night telling his father that he would be back in

56:48

an hour. But that hour came

56:50

and went and he never came he

56:52

never came back home back home Billy's father would

56:54

later say that after the bodies

56:57

were discovered in Gacy's home, he had

56:59

a bad feeling that his son

57:01

was one of them. He

57:03

described Billius, handsome

57:06

athletic, with a pension for

57:08

getting in trouble. She would

57:09

later tell the Chicago

57:11

Tribune, that because of Billy's habits, he

57:14

figured his son was one of the

57:16

victims, and he

57:17

was. On the

57:19

night of June tenth, Billy

57:21

was strolling around Chicago when Casey pulled up beside

57:23

him and offered him something

57:25

appealing, something that Billy

57:27

didn't wanna pass up. And

57:29

by the end of the night, his body was tossed

57:32

in the crawl space along with

57:34

the

57:35

five other boys. The

57:37

next victim would be sixteen year old

57:39

James or Jimmy Hackinson.

57:42

Jimmy was originally from Saint Paul Minnesota.

57:45

but he

57:45

always had dreams of moving to a

57:47

big city. And in

57:48

nineteen seventy six, he finally

57:51

took that first step and

57:53

left for Chicago. On August fifth

57:55

nineteen seventy six, he called

57:58

his mother to let her know that he

58:00

had arrived. but

58:02

she would never

58:02

hear from her son again.

58:05

It's believed that Casey picked up

58:07

Jimmy that very day he arrived

58:09

in the city. And because he

58:11

was new to the area, it's likely that Gacy offered him a

58:14

job. I'm sure Jimmy

58:16

was excited to start his new life.

58:20

But as soon as he stepped foot in Casey's home, all

58:22

of those dreams would be crushed. Jimmy

58:25

would later be found in

58:26

the crawl space of Casey's home

58:30

and sadly he would go unidentified for nearly

58:32

forty years. Of Gacy's

58:34

thirty three

58:35

victims, there are still

58:38

five unidentified. to this

58:39

very day. Luckily,

58:42

in twenty seventeen, one of Jimmy's

58:44

family members decided to submit

58:47

their DNA. after nearly a century victim

58:49

number twenty four had a

58:51

name, Jimmy Hackington.

58:52

The very next day after

58:55

killing sixteen year old Jimmy, Gacy

58:57

took to the streets of Chicago again, looking

59:00

for another victim. And he ends up

59:02

running

59:02

into seventeen year old Rick

59:04

Johnston. Rick had been dropped

59:06

off at the Aragon ballroom that night by his

59:08

mother so that he could attend a concert,

59:10

but he never came back home. While

59:12

he

59:12

was out, Rick was picked up by Gacy, and much like

59:14

the others, it's believed Gacy used the

59:17

handcuff trick and strangled him.

59:20

and he too would later be found in the crawl space.

59:22

Next was nineteen year old William Bundy,

59:24

who was a talented diver and In

59:28

October of nineteen seventy six, he told his family that

59:30

he was leaving to go to a party, but he

59:32

was never seen again. William would

59:36

go unidentified for over thirty years after Casey was caught until one of

59:38

his siblings provided DNA

59:40

confirming that he was one of the boys in the

59:42

crawl space. next two

59:44

victims

59:44

were friends who were kidnapped and

59:46

murdered on the same day, October twenty

59:49

fourth nineteen seventy six. fourteen

59:51

year old Michael Marino and sixteen year

59:53

old Kenneth Parker were last seen walking

59:56

near a restaurant in Chicago when they came

59:58

into contact with John

1:00:00

Wayne Gacy. Both of

1:00:00

their bodies would later be found in the crawl space lying

1:00:02

directly next to each other, leading

1:00:04

investigators to believe that they were

1:00:06

killed on the same night. Gacy's

1:00:09

next victim was twenty one year old Wayne Alexander. Now,

1:00:11

it's unclear exactly when

1:00:13

Francis went missing but

1:00:16

it's widely believed that it happened towards the end of nineteen seventy

1:00:19

six. Francis moved to Chicago the

1:00:21

year before in nineteen seventy five and

1:00:23

shortly after he got married,

1:00:26

but their marriage didn't last very long. And soon after the divorce,

1:00:28

no one ever heard from Francis

1:00:30

again. His family assumed that

1:00:32

he was embarrassed about the divorce

1:00:34

and just wanted to be left alone, so they don't

1:00:36

end

1:00:37

up filing a missing person's report. His body would later

1:00:39

be found in the crawl space.

1:00:42

and it wasn't until last year in two thousand one when

1:00:44

he was finally identified after

1:00:47

his family submitted DNA. So

1:00:50

as you can see, even all these years later, this case

1:00:52

is still actively affecting people.

1:00:56

Nineteen seventy six

1:00:56

was a busy year for

1:01:00

John Wayne Gacy. He was still having his backyard

1:01:02

barbecues,

1:01:02

building his reputation

1:01:04

in Chicago. All

1:01:06

wild bodies in the crawl space

1:01:09

were piling up. No one knew

1:01:11

about Casey's Dark Secret, which

1:01:14

made it all the more fun.

1:01:16

And his last victim in nineteen

1:01:18

seventy six with seventeen year old Gregory

1:01:20

Godzick. Casey claimed that

1:01:22

he didn't remember a lot of the murders

1:01:24

during this

1:01:26

year, but For whatever

1:01:28

reason, he did remember

1:01:30

this one. Gregory was a

1:01:32

senior at Taft High School, and in the

1:01:34

weeks before his murder, he was going

1:01:36

around Chicago trying to find a

1:01:38

job. He

1:01:38

ended up finding one with

1:01:41

John Wayne Gacy,

1:01:42

who offered him five dollars and fifty

1:01:44

cents an hour. Then on December

1:01:45

eleventh, Gregory left his home at

1:01:48

about eight PM to go on a date with

1:01:49

his girlfriend.

1:01:52

but

1:01:53

he never came back. His car would

1:01:55

later be

1:01:55

found abandoned and his family knew

1:01:58

immediately that something had happened

1:01:59

to him. They

1:02:02

even hired a private investigator, but nothing came

1:02:05

about it. Shortly

1:02:07

after his disappearance, Greg's

1:02:10

girlfriend decided to go to Gacy's

1:02:12

house knowing he

1:02:13

had recently started working for

1:02:15

him. But when

1:02:16

Gacy

1:02:17

opened the door, he

1:02:18

told her that Greg had been talking

1:02:20

to him about running away. Little did she know?

1:02:23

His body was right under her feet

1:02:25

in the crawl space.

1:02:28

Casey would later

1:02:29

claim that Greg came over to his house that night and

1:02:31

he played the good old handcuff

1:02:33

trick on him.

1:02:34

trick And once Greg

1:02:36

was defenseless, Casey

1:02:38

put the rope around his neck and

1:02:40

strangled him to death. And

1:02:42

something horrific about this story

1:02:45

is that Gacy would later say

1:02:47

that Greg actually dug his own

1:02:49

grave that night, thinking it was

1:02:51

a job he was

1:02:53

getting paid for. He had no

1:02:55

idea that the hole he was digging was

1:02:57

for hemp.

1:03:06

By the

1:03:06

time nineteen seventy six ended, Casey

1:03:08

had murdered at least fourteen young

1:03:11

men from around Chicago. And we

1:03:13

say at least because there were five other victims who are still unidentified

1:03:15

that could have possibly been killed this

1:03:17

year as well. Meaning,

1:03:19

in nineteen seventy six, Casey could have

1:03:22

killed up to nineteen young men,

1:03:24

and their bodies were quickly piling up

1:03:26

in the crawl space of

1:03:28

his home. And after a while, it started to

1:03:30

smell, but Casey didn't seem to be very

1:03:32

paranoid about it. In fact, he

1:03:34

continued to have barbecues with hundreds of

1:03:36

people at

1:03:38

his home. all while the bodies were under his floorboards. And

1:03:40

nineteen seventy seven was a busy

1:03:42

year for Gacy too when it came to

1:03:44

murdering young

1:03:46

men. And that year really started with a bang. The first of

1:03:48

this series of killings took place on

1:03:50

January twentieth, nineteen seventy seven.

1:03:53

When Gacy lured a nineteen year old acquaintance

1:03:56

named John Allen Shitts to his home on

1:03:58

Sommerdale Avenue.

1:04:00

Gacy had told John that he wanted

1:04:02

to purchase his white Plymouth Satellite, a midsized stylish automobile.

1:04:04

And so John had come over that day in his

1:04:06

vehicle with some of his belongings.

1:04:10

John Shits and Gacy had actually been talking for a while

1:04:12

now, and the nineteen year old had apparently

1:04:14

been telling his friends about Gacy,

1:04:16

saying that his friend John

1:04:18

who had money, wanted to take him to Florida and buy him a fur coat.

1:04:20

You see, most people that knew John

1:04:22

Shitts knew that he was gay, and to them this

1:04:25

man that they nicknamed Florida John.

1:04:28

may have just been a new love interest.

1:04:30

But to some, this phantom man, Florida John, seemed suspicious.

1:04:33

Something just wasn't

1:04:36

adding up. Regardless,

1:04:37

though, on that day,

1:04:39

January twentieth, nineteen seventy seven,

1:04:41

after arriving at the Gacy residence

1:04:43

to sell his car, John Shits was strangled to death

1:04:45

in the spare bedroom and his body was taken

1:04:47

down beneath the home to the crawl space

1:04:49

and buried. Later, Gaisy would

1:04:51

sell John Shits his white

1:04:53

Plymouth satellite to an employee of his

1:04:56

named Michael Rossi who worked for his

1:04:58

contracting company.

1:04:59

Casey told Michael that he had purchased the

1:05:01

car legally and for three hundred dollars and that it was now his

1:05:03

to sell. This car though would prove to be

1:05:05

a key piece to solving the puzzle

1:05:08

later on. But before we get

1:05:10

to that, we have to discuss the other

1:05:12

murders that took place in seventy

1:05:14

seven. On March

1:05:15

fifteenth of that year, A twenty

1:05:17

year old man named John Prestige disappeared after last being seen

1:05:19

leaving a restaurant in near Northside, one

1:05:21

of Chicago's seventy seven

1:05:24

community areas. John had grown

1:05:26

up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where his

1:05:28

family owned a beehive farm. On

1:05:30

March fifteenth of that year, John was

1:05:32

just passing through Chicago on his way

1:05:34

to Colorado. And at the time, he

1:05:36

was crashing on an older friend's

1:05:38

couch. That

1:05:38

evening, John's friend Roger took him to

1:05:40

get a haircut, and the two then got

1:05:43

coffee together in that area. at a

1:05:45

place called the Oaktree restaurant. Later that night, Roger

1:05:47

dropped Jonoff at nearby Bughouse Square,

1:05:49

a place that Gacy was

1:05:51

known to frequent. John

1:05:53

had

1:05:53

told his friend that he was in need of money,

1:05:55

and so Roger had dropped him off and hoped that

1:05:58

he could somehow scrounge together some

1:06:00

cash for the rest of his journey. when

1:06:02

John didn't return that night, Roger

1:06:04

reported a missing, called his family

1:06:06

back in Michigan, and went on a

1:06:08

search for his whom he would

1:06:11

never be able to find. According to Summerports, John had

1:06:13

told his friend that he had gotten work

1:06:15

with a local contractor It's

1:06:18

assumed that that night John had met up with John Wayne

1:06:20

Gacy, was taken back to

1:06:22

his home, strangled, and then

1:06:24

buried. in the crawl space.

1:06:26

Sometime during

1:06:28

this period, Gacy

1:06:30

murdered another young man. either

1:06:32

in the spring or summer of nineteen seventy seven.

1:06:35

However, to this day, the

1:06:37

identity of the victim

1:06:39

remains a mystery. And

1:06:41

without knowing who they were, it's

1:06:44

difficult to know a

1:06:46

timeline. But let's fast forward to

1:06:48

July fifth nineteen

1:06:50

seventy seven. It

1:06:51

was the day after the fourth of July.

1:06:53

A nineteen year old Matthew Bowman, a young man

1:06:55

from Crystal Lake, Illinois,

1:06:58

was at a train station in the suburbs, planning

1:07:01

on traveling to nearby Harwood Heights. He had

1:07:03

to go to court there that day

1:07:05

regarding a parking ticket.

1:07:08

In the years before his disappearance, the

1:07:10

Bowman family had already been going through a

1:07:13

lot. In nineteen seventy five,

1:07:15

Matthew's stepfather, Anthony,

1:07:18

I've been shot and killed during a car jacking gone wrong,

1:07:20

a crime that heavily affected

1:07:23

Matthew and his family. Then

1:07:26

two years later on July

1:07:28

fifth, Matthew's mom dropped him

1:07:30

off at the train station early in

1:07:33

the day. Later that evening

1:07:34

Matthew visited his sister in

1:07:36

the city. Then he left, telling her

1:07:38

he was going to the train station

1:07:40

to go back home. And

1:07:42

at some point along that walk, Matthew Cross

1:07:44

passed with John Wayne Gacy. And

1:07:47

after that, he was

1:07:49

never seen again.

1:07:51

Once back at Gacy's home, he

1:07:54

was strangled and thrown into the crawl

1:07:56

space. Then in

1:07:57

August of that very

1:07:59

year, something

1:07:59

interesting happened. Remember

1:08:02

Michael Rossi who worked

1:08:04

for DC and actually purchased

1:08:06

one of the victim's cars Well,

1:08:10

it turns out, in the

1:08:12

summer of that year, Michael admitted

1:08:14

to helping his

1:08:15

employer John Wayne Gacy, big

1:08:17

a trench in the crawl space. Michael said

1:08:19

that if he deviated from the path that gaze

1:08:20

he instructed him to

1:08:22

dig, he would be scolded.

1:08:27

He claimed he didn't know exactly why he was

1:08:29

digging the trench, but he was

1:08:31

just listening to

1:08:33

his boss. It was also later

1:08:36

found out that Michael actually participated

1:08:38

in some of the clowning that

1:08:40

Casey did in his free

1:08:42

time. and he would dress up, make balloon

1:08:44

animals, and entertain people

1:08:47

with Gacy. The two

1:08:49

went by Pogo in

1:08:51

patches. and they were really close,

1:08:52

like really close.

1:08:54

It turns out Casey

1:08:56

had

1:08:57

asked Michael a number

1:08:59

of times to have sex with

1:09:01

him, but

1:09:02

Michael said he declined. But the two were also known to

1:09:04

fist

1:09:07

fight and physically assault each other all the time. At

1:09:09

one point, one of the fights

1:09:11

got

1:09:11

so bad that Gacy

1:09:13

filed a criminal complaint

1:09:16

against him. And Michael

1:09:18

even said that Gacy threatened to kill him on multiple occasions, but somehow

1:09:22

he escaped death. unlike

1:09:25

the

1:09:25

other victims. But back to August of nineteen seventy seven, during

1:09:27

that month, Michael Rossi

1:09:30

was arrested by authorities after

1:09:33

stealing gasoline from a gas station. The gas station attendant who was working at the time noted his

1:09:36

car's license

1:09:40

plate. which led the authorities to the

1:09:42

home of John Wayne Gacy. When they questioned him, Gacy told the police that

1:09:44

he had legally bought the car

1:09:46

from John Shitts earlier that year

1:09:50

And from there, he sold the car to his own

1:09:52

employee, Michael Rossi. Casey even showed the

1:09:54

police a receipt of sale for the

1:09:56

car, which Barr shits his signature. Even

1:09:59

though it was later proven that the signature had been forged, the authorities believed Gacy.

1:10:04

and they left the house that day without ever following

1:10:06

up on the matter, if they had only known at the time that the real

1:10:08

owner of the car was buried beneath the

1:10:10

house that stood in front of them.

1:10:14

and that the man's killer was right before

1:10:16

their very eyes. It's incredible that after

1:10:18

all of this, they didn't look any

1:10:20

further into this matter. I mean, John

1:10:22

Shitts had been missing over a at point communicated any his family, and

1:10:24

had even mentioned to his

1:10:27

friends before his disappearance. that

1:10:31

a strange man nicknamed Florida John had wanted to

1:10:33

buy him expensive things and take him

1:10:35

to another state. But just

1:10:37

like in many other

1:10:39

true cases, The police glossed over all of

1:10:41

this and moved on with their day. And even though he had been recently questioned

1:10:43

by the police regarding a

1:10:46

possession of one of his

1:10:48

victims, John Wayne

1:10:50

Gaisy's bloodlust only grew stronger, and he would strike again very soon.

1:10:53

and he would strike again very soon

1:10:56

September fifteenth nineteen seventy seven was the last day

1:10:58

that eighteen year old Robert Gilroy was ever seen alive.

1:11:00

Robert was the son

1:11:02

of a Chicago police sergeant

1:11:05

and lived to mere four blocks from

1:11:07

the Gacy House. Robert was supposed to attend

1:11:09

a horse riding lesson in nearby Northbrook, and

1:11:11

later that month, He was

1:11:14

supposed to attend camp in Maryland, but when he failed to show up for either of these things, his the

1:11:16

police sergeant, conducted his own

1:11:18

investigation into his son's whereabouts. But

1:11:23

unfortunately, after searching around Chicago, he

1:11:25

couldn't find anything. His son

1:11:27

had simply vanished. had simply vanished

1:11:30

Out of all the victims of John Wayne Gacy, Robert

1:11:32

Gilroy ended up having the most

1:11:34

thorough missing persons report, probably

1:11:37

because his father was a police sergeant.

1:11:39

To gather information for the report, which was over forty

1:11:41

pages long. Friends of Roberts were

1:11:43

interviewed, employees of the

1:11:45

camp in Maryland were interviewed. and thorough searches of the

1:11:47

city were performed. Officers even searched the

1:11:50

areas surrounding the apartment where

1:11:52

Robert and his father

1:11:54

had lived. literally only a few blocks north

1:11:56

of John Wayne Gacy's home. Once

1:11:58

again, it seemed like the authorities

1:12:00

were so close to finding

1:12:02

him. but the search didn't turn up any new

1:12:04

information. Eventually, the additions to

1:12:06

the report slowed down and

1:12:08

the case stalled. It's assumed that

1:12:10

Robert was murdered at Casey's home on September fifteenth and buried in the crawl space shortly afterwards.

1:12:13

When his body

1:12:16

was recovered, it was discovered

1:12:18

that a piece of cloth had been shoved so far down his throat that it was actually what had killed him,

1:12:20

which is a notable change in

1:12:22

Gacy's method of killing. At this point,

1:12:27

The bloodlust of the killer clown simply couldn't be contained.

1:12:29

Only ten days after Robert Gilroy

1:12:31

was murdered, nineteen year

1:12:33

old John Morey. a former marine went

1:12:36

missing. But the story of

1:12:38

John's disappearance is, let's say,

1:12:40

different than the stories of most.

1:12:42

Just five years prior to his death,

1:12:44

John Morey, at the age of fourteen,

1:12:46

had actually witnessed the aftermath of a

1:12:48

murder himself In nineteen seventy two, John

1:12:50

had walked into his sister's apartment and found her dead bloodied corpse sprawled out

1:12:53

on her living

1:12:56

room floor. surrounded by her three beloved

1:12:58

young puppies. She had been stabbed multiple times, and her younger brother had been the one

1:13:01

to discover

1:13:04

her body. This murder affected John who, after high school,

1:13:06

had joined the US Marine Corps. After returning home from the corps,

1:13:08

John returned to

1:13:11

the Chicago got a job at a bank and

1:13:13

seemed to be heading in a positive direction in life. At one point though, he moved

1:13:16

into an apartment

1:13:18

on Column Avenue in

1:13:20

Chicago, with a friend named Mike, which

1:13:22

had proved to be a fatal mistake that we'll talk about later. On September twenty

1:13:25

fifth, nineteen

1:13:28

seventy seven, John disappeared after leaving his mother's home.

1:13:30

He had left her house on Sunnyside Avenue that rainy evening on foot

1:13:32

as it was only a short walk

1:13:34

back to his apartment that he shared with.

1:13:37

Mike. But it

1:13:38

was during this walk when he vanished. It's theorized that somehow John Wayne had encountered

1:13:40

the other

1:13:41

John, lured him back

1:13:43

to his home and

1:13:47

then strangled him and buried him in the crawl space

1:13:49

beneath the house's master bedroom. But

1:13:51

we'll talk about some of the

1:13:53

strange inconsistencies in this theory later

1:13:55

on in the story. At

1:13:57

this point, John Wayne Gacy was on a

1:13:59

rampage. Even

1:13:59

though on the outside, he

1:14:02

continued to live a normal life.

1:14:05

working contracting jobs and socializing with the higher ups in Chicago. On the

1:14:07

inside, he was a tortured man. There was a beast

1:14:09

inside of him that he could no

1:14:12

longer restrain.

1:14:12

what

1:14:15

some would call a dark passenger, evil tendencies that

1:14:17

compelled him to continuously kill

1:14:20

and kill. October

1:14:22

seventeenth nineteen seventy seven, only

1:14:24

a few weeks before Halloween. Twenty one year old Russell Nelson,

1:14:27

a

1:14:27

man who was from Minnesota who was in Chicago

1:14:31

for vacation disappears after a night out at the local bars.

1:14:33

Russell, who at the time, was

1:14:35

studying architecture at

1:14:38

the University of Minnesota was excited to see some stunning

1:14:40

buildings, and yes, architecture that

1:14:42

Chicago had to offer. He had

1:14:44

been traveling at the time

1:14:46

cross country with his friend Robert

1:14:48

Young. was originally

1:14:50

from South Dakota, my home state. On their way to Chicago, Robert had even told Russell that he

1:14:52

knew

1:14:52

of a contractor

1:14:55

in the city, that

1:14:57

could give them some work while they were

1:15:00

there. As they were strapped for cash, this was an appealing offer to

1:15:02

Russell. But on that night, October seventeenth while out drinking at the

1:15:04

bars Russell

1:15:07

disappeared. Robert and Russell had actually been

1:15:10

standing outside of a club called

1:15:12

Crystal's blinkers

1:15:14

that night. when allowed an unruly group passing

1:15:16

by distracted them. After the

1:15:18

group had passed, Robert turned

1:15:20

around and noticed that

1:15:22

his friend Russell had into thin

1:15:24

air. It's assumed that somehow John Wayne Gacy

1:15:26

either abducted or lured Russell back with

1:15:29

him to his house. and then proceeded to strangle and

1:15:32

bury him beneath the guest

1:15:34

bedroom in that cursed crawl

1:15:36

space. November

1:15:37

of nineteen seventy

1:15:40

seven was a very violent month for

1:15:42

Daisy. On November eleventh, a sixteen year old boy

1:15:46

named Robert

1:15:46

Wuensch disappeared peered after running away from home in Kalamazoo,

1:15:48

Michigan. Robert told his mother

1:15:51

on the day that he ran

1:15:53

away that he was headed over

1:15:55

to a friend's house. and

1:15:57

that he would be back before

1:15:59

five but wouldn't the After leaving

1:16:00

his family home, Robert

1:16:02

had boarded a packed bus headed

1:16:07

to Chicago, seeking a better life for

1:16:09

himself, free from the family drama

1:16:11

he had been

1:16:13

forced back into in Michigan.

1:16:15

exactly happened during Robert's time in Chicago,

1:16:18

but the last time he was

1:16:20

seen was November

1:16:22

eleventh nineteen seventy seven. Somehow,

1:16:26

Robert got into contact with John Wayne Gacy. And once he was there,

1:16:28

he was strangled and

1:16:30

buried in the crawl space.

1:16:33

Exactly a

1:16:35

week later. On November eighteenth, twenty year

1:16:37

old Tommy Bohling disappears after a

1:16:39

night spent at a Chicago

1:16:41

bar. On that evening, Tommy had sat and

1:16:44

watched the film body and Clyde on a

1:16:46

television inside of the bar. While

1:16:47

he relaxed and drank, he placed a

1:16:49

phone call to his parents to check up

1:16:51

on his dad. who had been sick that day. At

1:16:53

the time that he disappeared, Tommy was married and had a three year old

1:16:56

child. He also had

1:16:58

a warrant out for his

1:17:00

arrest related to a burglary he had

1:17:02

allegedly participated in, and he had been receiving threatening phone calls to his

1:17:04

home from an unknown number. But

1:17:06

after leaving the bar that night,

1:17:08

leaving the bar that night Once

1:17:10

again, Tommy disappeared. It's assumed that sometime that evening, Tommy crossed paths

1:17:13

with John

1:17:16

Wayne Gacy, was either

1:17:18

lured or taken back to his home and was then strangled and buried in the crawl space.

1:17:21

And

1:17:23

at this point, The disappearances of

1:17:25

young men in the Chicago area were getting hard

1:17:27

to ignore. Families had come to

1:17:29

town in search of their sons

1:17:32

and brothers Friends

1:17:34

had taken out ads in

1:17:36

magazines, and a number of

1:17:38

investigations had been opened by

1:17:41

different police departments. But still,

1:17:43

there were no leads, and no

1:17:45

one had any clue where these

1:17:47

young men were

1:17:49

going. Were they leaving on trains

1:17:52

bound for California or New

1:17:54

York? Did they want to disappear?

1:17:57

or was

1:17:57

there something sinister going

1:17:58

on within Chicago? All around the

1:17:59

country, families were growing more and

1:18:02

more desperate to find their loved

1:18:04

ones. And

1:18:07

soon, a lead in the

1:18:09

case would change everything. But

1:18:11

before the end came

1:18:13

a horrific stretch of darkness

1:18:15

that would change the city of Chicago forever. On

1:18:18

December ninth nineteen seventy

1:18:20

seven, Nineteen

1:18:23

year old US Marine, David Tlesma, tells

1:18:25

his mom that he's going to

1:18:27

see a concert in

1:18:29

the town of Hammond, Indiana. The acts

1:18:31

that he was planning on seeing were the Rock

1:18:34

Band's UFO and CheapTric,

1:18:36

two popular groups

1:18:38

at the time. To this day, it's

1:18:39

unclear whether David actually made

1:18:42

it to the concert or

1:18:44

not. But what's

1:18:45

known for certain is that

1:18:47

He never showed up for his two AM plan that he

1:18:49

had made with a girl

1:18:51

in town. Sometime

1:18:54

during the night, David had fallen into Gacy's trap.

1:18:56

He was taken back to

1:18:58

his house, strangled with a

1:19:02

ligature, and

1:19:02

buried deep within the crawl space next

1:19:04

to all the other young

1:19:07

men. December

1:19:07

thirtieth nineteen seventy

1:19:09

seven, Only two nights left until nineteen

1:19:12

seventy eight. On that evening, John

1:19:14

Wayne Gacy was feeling bold and his

1:19:16

bloodlust was once again too strong

1:19:18

to overpower. He was deep in the grips of his murderous addiction, and

1:19:21

he desperately craved the next hit.

1:19:23

So that night, he grabs a

1:19:25

gun and heads down to

1:19:27

the bus station. a place one could practically

1:19:29

nickname Casey's hunting grounds. As he's cruising amongst the park cars and

1:19:32

buses, John comes across

1:19:34

nineteen year old Robert Donnelly,

1:19:37

Quickly, John pulled out the gun and pointed at

1:19:39

Robert and forced him to get into his vehicle after pretending to

1:19:42

be a police officer. After

1:19:44

entering the vehicle, John made sure that Robert couldn't escape

1:19:46

by clicking him into a pair of handcuffs. And

1:19:48

from there, the two drove

1:19:50

back to the Gacy Residence. The

1:19:53

details

1:19:54

of the shocking night of torture that Robert was forced to endure are horrific.

1:19:56

After being forced

1:19:59

into the handcuffs, being forced into

1:20:01

the handcuffs Gacy began to

1:20:04

torture and rape Robert.

1:20:06

Throughout the torture, Gacy

1:20:08

continuously dunk

1:20:10

Robert's head. up

1:20:11

and down into a bathtub full of water. And he

1:20:13

would hold his head

1:20:14

under until he would pass

1:20:18

out. Robert stated he passed

1:20:20

out multiple times throughout the night, either

1:20:22

from water torture or from Casey choking him.

1:20:25

At one

1:20:26

point, Casey asked Robert, Aren't

1:20:30

we playing fun games tonight? In between the bouts of sexual assault, choking,

1:20:32

in between about sexual assault

1:20:34

and water torture, Gacy

1:20:37

also grabbed his loaded revolver and pointed it at Robert's

1:20:39

head. It seemed as though Gacy

1:20:41

wanted to play a game of

1:20:44

Russian Rellet. the game of

1:20:46

russian roulette Multiple times

1:20:48

throughout

1:20:48

the night, he would pull the trigger

1:20:50

and the pistol would click, signaling that

1:20:54

there was no ammunition. But at one point, the gun

1:20:56

did fire. And after the

1:20:58

smoke cleared, Robert was relieved

1:21:01

to find out that

1:21:03

it was a blank. At

1:21:05

one

1:21:05

point in the night, Robert asked Casey, why

1:21:07

don't you just kill me? The pain

1:21:09

was too much for

1:21:11

him to bear. chilling

1:21:14

me, Casey

1:21:15

responds. I'm getting around

1:21:17

to it. During the torture,

1:21:19

Casey also stated to Robert

1:21:21

that he had killed girls

1:21:23

in nearby Shiller Park. Casey has never been connected

1:21:25

to this, but interestingly enough, a

1:21:28

sixteen year old

1:21:30

girl named Deborah Rosenkran had indeed been found beaten and bound with

1:21:32

an intricately nodded rope inside of

1:21:34

the park earlier that year. She

1:21:36

had died two weeks

1:21:38

after the violent assault, and to this

1:21:40

day, The crime remains

1:21:42

unsolved. And even though these girls are not part of Casey's victim type, it is

1:21:44

interesting to know that he

1:21:46

claimed to have killed her. or

1:21:50

maybe

1:21:50

he knew the person who did. I guess we'll never know. But we will talk about it in next

1:21:52

episode. At the

1:21:55

end of the evening, It

1:21:58

seems like John Wayne Gacy decided that

1:22:00

he was exhausted. Either he didn't have

1:22:02

enough energy to kill Robert or he

1:22:05

simply didn't feel like it. And so,

1:22:07

he loaded Robert back into his car, drove

1:22:09

him to his place of employment downtown,

1:22:11

and dropped him off. Before

1:22:14

the two parted ways though, Casey told Robert that if he were

1:22:16

to ever file a criminal complaint against him

1:22:18

or go to the police with his story,

1:22:22

that they would never believe him. He told Robert, I have

1:22:24

connections in this town. He

1:22:25

don't want to mess with me.

1:22:27

But shortly after the

1:22:29

ordeal, Robert Donnelly did

1:22:31

report the assault. which

1:22:33

led the police again to John Wayne Gacy's front

1:22:35

doorstep on January sixth nineteen

1:22:40

seventy eight. One question, gave he

1:22:42

admitted to the authorities that yes, he had indeed had sexual relations with Robert,

1:22:44

but he told them that the

1:22:46

two had a slave sex relationship

1:22:50

and assured that everything was consensual.

1:22:52

In fact,

1:22:52

Gacy claimed that Robert had come

1:22:55

forward with these allegations because Gacy

1:22:57

hadn't paid him for his time.

1:22:59

And after

1:22:59

hearing all of this, the police took Casey's sign and

1:23:01

never followed up with the case,

1:23:04

effectively silencing

1:23:06

Robert by telling him that they didn't believe him. Back

1:23:09

in the day,

1:23:09

the idea that these people were

1:23:12

involved in

1:23:14

these homosexual encounters. was just something the police didn't

1:23:16

wanna deal with, which is

1:23:18

exactly what happened in the

1:23:21

case of Jeffrey Dahmer. The fact that these crimes

1:23:23

were between gay men just wasn't important

1:23:26

enough for them to look into.

1:23:29

In

1:23:30

this was another time when investigators

1:23:32

should have connected the dots.

1:23:34

The young men

1:23:35

that were going missing

1:23:37

in Casey's neighborhood The car of a missing man on

1:23:39

that case he had allegedly purchased

1:23:42

and sold, but they didn't.

1:23:44

the didn't And

1:23:46

by the time nineteen seventy seven

1:23:48

came to an end, there

1:23:49

were twenty eight young men either in

1:23:51

the crawl space or

1:23:53

buried somewhere

1:23:54

on Gacy's property. He was running at a room

1:23:56

and his home

1:23:57

started to wreak of

1:23:59

decomposition, but his desire to

1:24:01

kill was stronger than his fear

1:24:03

of getting caught. and

1:24:05

his

1:24:05

next victim was just around the corner.

1:24:07

On February sixteenth nineteen on february

1:24:10

six seventy eight,

1:24:12

Nineteen year old William

1:24:14

Kindred vanished from Chicago's Northside. William was

1:24:18

excited for his future,

1:24:20

and he had just gotten engaged

1:24:22

to his girlfriend, Mary Joe Paulis. In fact, on night

1:24:24

polish of

1:24:28

his disappearance, He

1:24:28

had just left his apartment and was on his

1:24:30

way over to a bar when he came into contact with John

1:24:35

Wayne Gacy. After he didn't come home the next day,

1:24:36

both his family and his

1:24:38

fiancee took to the streets to

1:24:40

look for William, but

1:24:43

they had no luck. He was

1:24:45

at

1:24:45

Casey's home in the crawl space, along with all of

1:24:47

the other boys, Casey

1:24:51

had murdered. And the police definitely weren't taking

1:24:53

his disappearance seriously. William

1:24:56

Kindred would actually

1:24:58

be the last victim buried on Daisy's property,

1:25:00

simply because there was

1:25:02

no more room. I

1:25:05

mean, imagine a one

1:25:07

thousand square foot home. and

1:25:09

then think about twenty nine bodies lying the floor of that small space.

1:25:11

It was getting

1:25:15

crowded, but that

1:25:17

didn't stop Casey from killing or at least

1:25:19

trying to

1:25:19

kill. His next victim

1:25:22

would actually escape and his

1:25:24

test amoney

1:25:26

gives us an idea of what the other boys

1:25:28

went through before their murders. His

1:25:30

name was Jeffrey Rignal, and he

1:25:33

was twenty six years old. a little bit

1:25:35

older than Casey's typical victim. And on the night

1:25:37

of March twenty first nineteen seventy eight,

1:25:39

he and his girlfriend got into a fight,

1:25:41

so he left on foot to go to

1:25:43

a gay bar. Now, Jeffrey was bisexual, but he admitted

1:25:45

that he preferred men over women. So after this fight with his

1:25:48

girlfriend, he was ready to let

1:25:50

off some steam and have a few

1:25:52

drinks. But on his way

1:25:54

there, a black oldsmobile pulled up beside him and offered him a ride. Jeffrey said that Gacy looked

1:25:57

friendly and so

1:26:00

he agreed. But after a

1:26:02

few minutes in the car, the friendly

1:26:05

man, but

1:26:08

someone evil. Before Jeffrey could even

1:26:10

react, Casey put a chloroform soaked rag over his face and he went unconscious.

1:26:12

The next thing he remembered was

1:26:14

feeling groggy as he woke up.

1:26:18

still in Gacy's car, and he could

1:26:20

see the lights of the freeway zooming by.

1:26:22

Then

1:26:22

he saw a sign that read Cumberland,

1:26:24

and that's the last thing he remembered before

1:26:26

Casey put the rag over his mouth for

1:26:28

a second

1:26:29

time. When he eventually woke

1:26:31

up, Jeffrey was in Casey's

1:26:33

man cave attached to a device

1:26:35

It was a two by four piece of wood with three

1:26:38

holes in it, one for his

1:26:40

head, and the

1:26:42

other two for his

1:26:44

hands. And the

1:26:45

device was connected to the ceiling

1:26:47

with chains. When Jeffrey realized what

1:26:49

was happening, he

1:26:51

began to panic. And that's

1:26:54

when he saw Gacy standing nude in front of him masturbating.

1:26:56

Gacy bent down and

1:26:59

whispered to Jeffrey that

1:27:00

he

1:27:03

had complete control over him, and he was

1:27:05

going to do whatever he

1:27:07

wanted, however

1:27:09

however he wanted he wanted. and

1:27:11

there was nothing he could do about it.

1:27:13

On the floor in

1:27:14

front of Jeffrey were whips,

1:27:18

leather toys, dildos in

1:27:19

tools that almost looked like

1:27:22

they were

1:27:22

for a fireplace. Upon

1:27:24

seeing this,

1:27:27

Jeffrey was horrified. Gacy

1:27:28

then forced him to

1:27:30

give him oral sex. And afterwards, he assaulted

1:27:32

him

1:27:34

with a large

1:27:36

Dildo, It was the most painful

1:27:38

thing Jeffrey had ever experienced. But the entire

1:27:40

time, Casey was forcing him

1:27:42

to say that he liked it.

1:27:46

and

1:27:46

he would tell Jeffrey, tell me

1:27:48

how much you love it. I wanna hear

1:27:50

you say how much you love this.

1:27:53

During

1:27:53

the torture and rape, Jeffrey kept

1:27:55

passing out and once when

1:27:57

he

1:27:57

came to. He noticed that

1:27:59

Casey was not the only person

1:28:02

in the room While Gacy was reaping him

1:28:04

from behind, there was another

1:28:06

man with dark hair parted

1:28:09

down the middle, who

1:28:11

was

1:28:11

on his knees in front of him. But

1:28:13

when

1:28:13

Jeffrey tried to get a good look at this guy, the chloroform rag

1:28:15

was put on his face

1:28:18

and he passed out yet

1:28:20

again. The next

1:28:22

thing he remembered was waking up in a pile of snow near a park.

1:28:24

His clothes

1:28:25

were barely

1:28:27

on his body and

1:28:29

his face was burning from the chloroform. Jeffrey quickly went to the police to report the

1:28:32

raid and he was sent

1:28:34

to

1:28:34

the hospital to treat his

1:28:36

injuries. He

1:28:39

had severe

1:28:40

facial burns and rectal bleeding,

1:28:42

but the police didn't

1:28:44

seem too concerned, especially when

1:28:46

they found out it was a

1:28:49

homosexual incident. And they literally told Jeffrey that there was

1:28:51

nothing they could

1:28:51

do because he didn't know anything

1:28:53

about the man other than a

1:28:56

physical dis

1:28:58

prescription. Showing myself about five, five thirty

1:29:01

in the morning on the steps

1:29:03

right by Lincoln Park, half

1:29:05

dressed my face

1:29:08

completely burned. So police took the matter

1:29:10

very, very lightly. And I felt that, you know, it wasn't

1:29:14

a light matter. I'm just thankful that I woke up

1:29:16

in the park instead of

1:29:18

underneath his our nation.

1:29:21

And with that, the police sent him away

1:29:23

without conducting investigation. But Jeffrey was angry

1:29:26

and more

1:29:26

than anything, he wanted revenge.

1:29:28

He was determined to find the

1:29:30

man who did this to him

1:29:32

so he tried his best to remember every single

1:29:34

detail of that night. And that's when he remembered that along the car ride, he

1:29:37

saw a sign

1:29:39

that read Cumberland Now Jeffrey

1:29:41

didn't have a car, but he was so determined to find this guy

1:29:43

that he went out and rented one and drove all along the

1:29:45

Chicago roads until he saw

1:29:47

that Cumberland sign. And

1:29:50

then once he found it, he parked his rental

1:29:52

along the freeway and sat there for

1:29:54

hours hoping to see his abductor's car.

1:29:56

And what do you know?

1:29:58

He eventually sees

1:29:59

it. After being the black holes mobile take the

1:30:02

exit. Jeffrey follows him and quickly writes down his address and license plate number

1:30:04

so that he can

1:30:06

give it to the police. And luckily,

1:30:08

after doing their job for them, the police finally agreed

1:30:10

to take a look into Gacy. And not long after this,

1:30:13

John

1:30:13

Wayne Gacy would be charged

1:30:16

with battery. not

1:30:18

rape or kidnapping, but battery. And interestingly enough, Casey would actually be

1:30:20

on probation for

1:30:21

this offense when he was

1:30:23

arrested for the murders later

1:30:27

that year. Now keep in mind while

1:30:29

all of this is happening, Daisy

1:30:31

still has a

1:30:34

great reputation throughout Chicago. In

1:30:36

fact,

1:30:36

right after the rape and torture

1:30:39

of Jeffrey, Casey was in

1:30:42

charge of another Polish Day parade, where

1:30:44

first lady Roselyn Carter was

1:30:46

a special guest of honor. Their

1:30:50

in a picture of her and Gacy standing together

1:30:52

shaking hands. And she later

1:30:54

signed it, quote, to

1:30:57

John Gacy, best

1:31:00

wishes RoseLink harder. Imagine that, the

1:31:02

president's wife shaking hands

1:31:02

with the most prolific serial killer in

1:31:08

America. but

1:31:08

even though Gacy was doing well

1:31:10

socially. He

1:31:11

knew he needed to be careful. After all,

1:31:12

he was in the middle of

1:31:14

a lawsuit with Jeffrey yen. He had

1:31:18

absolutely no more room in his crawl

1:31:21

space to bury any

1:31:23

more boys. But he

1:31:24

still had the

1:31:27

burning desire to kill. and there

1:31:29

was nothing that

1:31:31

would stop him. About a

1:31:33

month after shaking

1:31:35

hands with Rosalyn in

1:31:38

Carter, in June of nineteen

1:31:40

seventy eight. Casey came across

1:31:42

twenty year old Timothy O'Rourke. The

1:31:45

last time Tim was seen alive, he told his roommate he was

1:31:47

going out to get cigarettes, but he

1:31:50

never made it back. Tim

1:31:54

and Gacy

1:31:55

had actually been in contact

1:31:57

before about him getting a

1:31:59

job at

1:31:59

PDN. So when Gacy

1:32:00

pulled up next to him

1:32:03

that night, he had no problem getting his car, but Tim

1:32:05

would later face the same fate

1:32:07

as the twenty

1:32:10

nine boys before him. except his body wouldn't be

1:32:12

thrown into the crawl space. There

1:32:14

wasn't enough room for him.

1:32:16

Instead,

1:32:18

Gacy put his body into the back of

1:32:21

his car and slowly drove along

1:32:23

the bridge on Interstate fifty

1:32:25

five. It was early

1:32:27

in the morning. so

1:32:29

there wasn't any traffic on the

1:32:31

roads when Gacy pulled his car was about an hour and

1:32:34

a half away from Gacy's

1:32:36

home.

1:32:38

So it was far enough that no one would

1:32:40

ever suspect him. And when the

1:32:42

coast was clear, he threw

1:32:45

Tim's body over the bridge, into the

1:32:47

Des Plaines River. Tim's body

1:32:49

wouldn't

1:32:50

surface for another two

1:32:52

weeks. and

1:32:54

no one in Chicago suspected that

1:32:57

Casey was responsible. A

1:32:59

month

1:32:59

later, in July of nineteen

1:33:01

seventy eight, Gacy

1:33:02

had his largest backyard party

1:33:04

of all time. There were

1:33:07

hundreds of people in

1:33:09

attendance, And many of them were

1:33:11

politicians and wealthy influential people from Chicago. And as always,

1:33:13

they celebrated by making a

1:33:16

lot of food

1:33:19

on the barbecue pit outside. Little did

1:33:21

they know?

1:33:22

There was a body under

1:33:25

the barbecue pit. while they all

1:33:27

ate and socialized. And there were

1:33:29

another couple dozen boys just

1:33:31

feet away under the

1:33:33

floorboards of Casey's home. And in just a

1:33:35

few short months, all of those people

1:33:38

in attendance were about to

1:33:40

learn of

1:33:42

Gacy's dark secrets. and that they were all standing over

1:33:44

his mass grave of

1:33:46

young boys. But interestingly enough,

1:33:48

for

1:33:48

the next five months,

1:33:51

Casey wouldn't kill anyone. It

1:33:53

was the longest hiatus he had in years. It's unclear why he took

1:33:55

this break, but at the time his business was doing really well, so

1:33:57

it's believed that he just didn't

1:33:59

have the time. Gacy

1:34:02

was making more money than he ever had.

1:34:04

In the following year, he was expected to

1:34:06

make over a half a million dollars.

1:34:09

So he was doing really well and

1:34:11

was busy. But then in November, Casey found out that his

1:34:13

ex wife Carol was getting remarried. And

1:34:15

not long after that, the

1:34:17

killing started again. The next

1:34:19

boy to go missing,

1:34:20

was nineteen year

1:34:22

old Frank Landigene. Frank was known to deal drugs around the Chicago area, and he had recently been

1:34:25

in and out

1:34:28

of jail. But on November

1:34:30

fourth, he left his home and told his dad he was going to go look for his girlfriend so they can make up.

1:34:32

Frank was last seen

1:34:35

walking

1:34:35

along Foster Avenue around

1:34:38

three AM, but he was never seen again.

1:34:40

Eight days later,

1:34:41

his body was found floating in

1:34:43

the Des Plaines River.

1:34:45

During

1:34:45

his autopsy, they found that his underwear had been shoved down his throne and that his cause

1:34:47

of death was drowning on

1:34:51

his own vomit. And

1:34:53

interestingly, he was the thirteenth victim of Gacy's who

1:34:55

died this way. So it seems like along the way

1:34:57

he switched up his

1:34:59

method of killing. or this was

1:35:02

one of his accomplices preferred methods. We don't know, but we're gonna talk about that more

1:35:05

in the

1:35:08

next episode. A

1:35:08

few weeks later, another young

1:35:10

man would go missing after having Thanksgiving dinner with his family. His

1:35:14

name

1:35:15

was James Mazara, and

1:35:17

he was twenty one years old. At the time of his murder, James

1:35:19

was living with friends

1:35:19

near Buck House Square, where Casey

1:35:21

picked up a number of

1:35:24

his victims. you picked up a number

1:35:26

of his victim And he was last seen on

1:35:28

November twenty fourth walking around

1:35:30

that area, carrying a suitcase. About

1:35:34

one month later, his body would

1:35:36

be found floating in the Des

1:35:38

Plaines River. He was now the

1:35:40

third victim thrown off the i

1:35:42

fifty five bridge. And now that a new

1:35:44

method of disposing of his

1:35:46

victims, he was

1:35:47

even planning to pour

1:35:49

concrete all throughout the

1:35:52

crawl space. which

1:35:53

would hopefully cover up

1:35:55

the smell. Then in his mind, all of his problems would disappear. He

1:36:00

could keep killing boys across

1:36:02

Chicago, but the ones in his home would be covered up forever.

1:36:05

His own

1:36:08

little secret He even

1:36:08

thought about doing renovations on his home with all

1:36:10

of the new money that was coming in, but

1:36:14

that would never happen. Gacy was getting arrogant

1:36:16

and sloppy. In his

1:36:18

next and final murder,

1:36:20

the murder of fifteen

1:36:23

year

1:36:23

old Robert Pieced, would

1:36:25

change everything, and it would eventually

1:36:27

lead to his downfall.

1:36:40

Hey, everybody.
