Bronson: Hey Mustangs! I'm Bronson Murphy!Adhvila: And I'm Adhvika Ram. Welcome to Mustangs on the Mic. This is the official Rancho Pico student podcast, meant to talk about mindfulness and wellness, and we hope you have a great time listening.Bronson: On today's episode of Mustangs on the Mic, we'll be talking about Black History Month and why we celebrate it.Adhvika: As all of you know, February is Black History Month, and in January, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day.Bronson: Black History Month is our way of celebrating achievements by African-Americans and their importance in US history.Adhvika: We dug up some interesting facts about Black History Month and Martin Luther King, and here they are.Bronson: Jack Johnson became the first African-American man to hold the heavyweight championship from 1908 until 1915.Adhvika: Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American ever appointed to the US Supreme Court.Bronson: The First African-American Billionaire was Robert Johnson when he sold Cable Station and founded B.E.T. in 2001.Adhvika: In 2008, Barack Obama was elected as the first Black president in America. Bronson: Those were some interesting facts, don't you think? Adhvika: Yeah! I'll be sure to remember those!Bronson: Here are some fun facts about Martin Luther King now.Adhvika: He was a prominent leader in the American Civil Rights Movement.Bronson: Because of MLK's actions, African-Americans do not have to suffer from segregation.Adhvika: Did you know that during his famous, "I Have a Dream" speech, almost no-one in the audience could hear his famous speech because the sound systems were sabotaged right before the event.Bronson: The final section of his speech was improvised. Singer Mahalia Jackson urged Dr. King to talk "about the dream". dr. King went into an improvised section of the speech.Adhvika: In his life, dr. King was in prison nearly 30 times!Bronson: He was shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4th, 1968 by James Earl Ray.Adhvika: Because of his actions, African-Americans don't have to suffer from segregation. Those were really interesting facts about Martin Luther King, Don't you think?Bronson: Yeah! Definitely! Although of MLK's many assasination attempts, he really did alot in his lifetime.Adhvika: Yeah. We even celebrate Martin Luther King day on January 17 every year, and we talk about what he did during his life and how he helped America.
