1:01
felt wronged by the romantic partners
1:03
and took matters into their own
1:05
hands with deadly results. In this
1:08
best of episode, I'll tell you
1:10
the story of Betty Broderick. Betty
1:12
was married to a handsome and
1:14
successful attorney and lived a life
1:16
she'd always dreamed of, but she
1:18
never felt secure in the love
1:20
of her husband, Dan Broderick. Arguments
1:23
and bickering escalating to accusations of
1:25
infidelity, threats of divorce, And
1:27
even physical fights. Betty's behavior became
1:29
more erratic when she learned her
1:31
husband was in a relationship with
1:33
his much younger secretary. As their
1:36
divorce preceded, Betty spun out of
1:38
control and her rage towards Dan
1:40
Broderick finally came to a tragic
1:42
end in Nineteen Eighty Nine. This
1:46
clip is from Season One

4:05
Thank you so much and I can't wait to travel
4:07
with you. Betty
4:13
was raised to be a wife and mother, and she
4:15
had a specific man in mind for a mate. He
4:18
should be handsome, of course. He
4:20
should also be a college man who aspired
4:22
to become a professional, like a doctor, lawyer,
4:24
or businessman. Someone like
4:26
Betty was raised to value home and family above
4:29
all, but he also aspired towards
4:31
the finer things in life, and was
4:33
willing to work hard to have a successful career
4:35
to provide his family with all the things money
4:37
could buy. Now having
4:39
met Betty, he could see the future in front of
4:41
him, to be a successful doctor,
4:44
to be married to a beautiful wife, and
4:46
eventually have children and a beautiful home as well.
4:50
She could envision their life as well, living
4:52
in a beautiful home, being a doctor's wife,
4:55
and hobnobbing in upper-class society circles.
4:58
These were all the things her parents had dreamed of for her.
5:01
She had charm and grace and a sense of style.
5:05
Dan was smart, funny, and charismatic.
5:08
Everyone saw them as a golden couple, perfectly
5:10
matched. Their first child,
5:12
Kimberly, was born in 1970. One
5:15
year later, their second daughter, Lee, was born. When
5:19
Dan decided after he'd finished his medical degree
5:21
that he wanted to attend law school instead of
5:23
becoming a doctor, Betty agreed. While
5:26
she knew it would take more sacrifice and they would
5:29
continue to live on a tight budget, she
5:31
believed Dan when he said, with both a medical
5:33
and a law degree, he could
5:35
specialize in medical malpractice law and be
5:37
in high demand at top law firms.
5:40
Dan entered Harvard Law School while Betty continued
5:42
to work to support the family, sometimes
5:45
even selling Tupperware door to door. Dan
5:48
finally graduated with his law degree in 1974. Dan
5:52
took a job at the prestigious law firm
5:54
Gray, Carey, Ames & Fry. While
5:57
Dan worked on building a successful legal career, he
5:59
would offer a often put in 15-hour days.
6:02
There was a definite strain in the marriage with
6:04
Betty left alone long hours with the children while
6:07
Dan worked at the office. Even
6:09
when he was home, he was preoccupied with
6:11
work that needed to be completed before court.
6:14
She was lonely in the marriage and wanted more of
6:16
his time. She missed the way
6:18
he used to dote on her when they were dating and
6:21
engaged. Dan was becoming
6:23
more successful and popular in his field and
6:25
was away from the home more and more. Only
6:29
she felt her husband was leaving her behind and
6:32
didn't view her as important or special anymore.
6:35
Betty was once again and for the last
6:37
time pregnant. She gave birth
6:39
to their fourth child and second son, Rhett, in
6:41
1979. By
6:44
now, Betty had been complaining and nagging her husband
6:46
about his lack of time spent with her and
6:48
the family for years. Their
6:50
fights began to escalate and the children
6:52
would later vividly recall these tense times.
6:55
By the time he would arrive, she would be
6:57
furious. Dan remembers many, many instances
7:00
of her mother and father screaming at each
7:02
other and that her mother would often throw
7:04
things at him. She would
7:06
pick up and hurl whatever was in reach,
7:08
including plates, cups, and once an almost full
7:10
bottle of ketchup that shattered just
7:12
over Dan's head. Betty's
7:15
behavior became increasingly immature as her
7:17
frustration grew. The children were
7:19
subjected to her angry tirades. She
7:22
was increasingly insecure about her looks and her
7:24
weight and worried that Dan would no longer
7:26
find her attractive. Betty
7:29
began criticizing and taunting Dan at every
7:31
opportunity that he was going through a
7:33
midlife crisis. Betty continued to
7:36
yell, complain, and berate her husband. She
7:38
often threatened divorce, sometimes putting Dan's clothes in
7:40
a suitcase and dropping it on the porch
7:42
for him to find. Dan's
7:45
response became to ignore his wife's histrionics.
7:48
After years of constant criticism and nagging by
7:50
Betty, he just stopped fighting with her. He
7:53
would ignore her, stay silent, and pretend
7:55
like nothing had happened. That
7:57
she was now getting no response from her husband. made
8:00
many even more angry. Have

10:52
so much for supporting the show. In
10:58
1982, the family went on a week-long
11:00
vacation to a dude ranch in Montana.
11:03
Betty and the kids arrived first and had a
11:06
great time horseback riding and swimming. Dan
11:08
arrived a bit later, and at first, they
11:11
enjoyed their vacation as a family. Soon,
11:14
however, Dan and Betty had a big fight,
11:16
and Dan decided to go back to San Diego on
11:18
his own. Betty tried to
11:20
call him repeatedly, but he did not
11:22
answer her calls. Betty drove the
11:24
kids home alone soon after, and
11:26
she became angrier the closer they approached their
11:29
home. When they
11:31
arrived, she lit into Dan about being
11:33
an irresponsible parent, a terrible husband, and
11:35
a selfish human being, a
11:37
laundry list of his faults that he'd been hearing for
11:39
years. But this time, something
11:42
snapped. Without a word,
11:44
Dan packed a bag and left. Betty
11:46
was stunned, as were the children. Remembering
11:49
this time, Kim would write, from
11:51
my viewpoint, Dad Without Mom equaled
11:54
peace and normalcy, while
11:56
Mom Without Dad had disaster written all
11:58
over it. A
12:06
new stress came into play in the life of the Brodericks in
12:08
1983. After
12:10
all the years of Betty accusing Dan of going
12:12
through a midlife crisis, she was
12:14
now convinced he was also having an affair. Perhaps
12:17
because of what ultimately happened, for years,
12:19
no one would comment lunch on Dan's
12:22
behavior during this time. Later,
12:24
a few details would emerge. While
12:27
some at the time would say that Dan didn't
12:29
begin a relationship until after he and Betty separated
12:31
for good, others would admit
12:33
they knew an affair had begun sometime before.
12:37
Not much would be said about Linda's part in the
12:39
breakup of Dan Broderick's marriage. While
12:42
it's certainly true that the marriage had been
12:44
on the rocks long before Linda Colcana made
12:46
her appearance in Dan Broderick's life, she
12:48
would certainly turn out to be a factor in his exit
12:51
from the marriage. Betty
12:53
discussed Dan's infidelity with her children, filling them
12:55
in on all the gossip and calling
12:57
his assistant ever more colorful names. All
13:00
of this, of course, was inappropriate to share with
13:02
her children. Betty
13:04
never stopped her tirades against their father and
13:07
began to grow angrier at each passing day. Dan
13:11
filed for legal separation and then finally
13:13
admitted to having a relationship with Linda
13:15
Colcana. Betty's anger turned
13:17
to hate. Dan
13:19
finally filed for divorce on September 23, 1985. When
13:25
Betty found out that Dan had filed for divorce
13:27
and changed the locks after 16 years of marriage,
13:30
she lost all control. She
13:32
arrived at his house and threw a patio umbrella through
13:34
a glass in the back door, unlocking
13:36
it and letting herself in. She
13:38
went on a rampage and tore apart every room in
13:41
the house, throwing furniture, ripping
13:43
up pictures, shredding curtains, and even
13:45
spray painting the walls. She
13:48
tried to drag out the divorce proceedings in many ways.
13:51
The day of the final court hearing, Betty
13:53
had no lawyer representing her and
13:55
she decided if she didn't show up, they would
13:58
have to postpone the final divorce judgment. She
14:01
was wrong. The judge finalize
14:03
the Broderick's divorce on July sixteenth,
14:05
Nineteen Eighty Six. Without that, he
14:07
presents. Betty
14:10
even three years after the separation and
14:12
almost as long since there was. Still,
14:15
Held hatred for Dan and now Linda.
14:17
Suit. Off until the children that she was going
14:19
to kill him. They heard it
14:21
so often they didn't react to it anymore.
14:24
She. Sometimes with elaborate saying that she was
14:26
going to shoot him in the head.
14:29
In early Nineteen Eighty Nine, Betty bought
14:31
a gun. With
14:45
them and. Incidentally
