2:09

Okay, let's hear it. Here we

2:12

go. You're ready yet? Also, just

2:14

a warning. This episode of pretty

2:16

graphic. In

2:24

the early hours of May Fourteenth,

2:27

Nineteen Eighty Three to California Highway

2:29

Patrol officers pulled over a suspected

2:31

drunk driver on the San Diego

2:34

Freeway in Missing via How California.

2:37

Instead of saying and his vehicle, the

2:39

driver jumps out pouring the contents of

2:41

a beer. Bottle and had road as the

2:43

accident. His to settled appearance

2:45

caught the officers attention as

2:47

he approached their. Patrol car that's

2:50

a little unusual and probably not real

2:52

safe these days. The officers

2:54

ask for the man's driver's license, and he

2:56

readily admitted that he had been drinking beer,

2:58

but he claimed to be sober. As.

3:00

Sergeant Michael Howard approach the

3:02

vehicle. He noticed a man

3:04

slaps. In the passenger seat. Partially.

3:07

Obstructed by a jacket with empty

3:09

beer. Bottles thrown around his

3:11

feet, A. Folding knife was

3:13

visible on the driver's seat. Howard.

3:16

Taft on the window. But there was no

3:18

response. The. May and was unconscious

3:20

and had no shoes on. His pants

3:22

were unzip with his genitals hanging. Out.

3:24

Of his pockets. The. Officer tempted

3:27

to find a pulse. But there was

3:29

none. A. Closer look at the

3:31

man indicated that the man had been

3:33

strangled. The. Standard B Y

3:36

Arrest. Just increased to murder, but

3:38

this was far from. The only

3:40

murders this man had committed. A

3:43

passenger turned out to be twenty

3:45

five year old marine Terry Gambrell.

3:47

A blood test revealed elevated levels

3:49

of alcohol along with the prescription

3:52

tranquilizer out of an. Even.

3:54

though this drug combo could have killed

3:56

them it was determined litter strangulation is

3:58

how he died Officers

4:01

got a search warrant and they began

4:03

to search the vehicle which would provide

4:05

a plethora of evidence. Inside

4:07

the car, they located some prescription drugs

4:10

but the worst was what they discovered under

4:12

the car mats. Hidden

4:14

oh so carefully under the

4:16

floor mats were dozens of

4:18

Polaroid photos of lifeless young

4:21

men. As the dead

4:23

man was removed from the car, there was blood

4:25

on the seat beneath him. But

4:27

the thing is, the man had not been

4:29

injured via a knife or gun leading

4:32

the investigators to believe this

4:34

was actually someone else's blood.

4:39

Inside the trunk, a briefcase was found

4:41

containing a sheet of yellow torn paper

4:43

from a legal pad. Neatly

4:45

printed in two columns

4:47

were 61 cryptic comments.

4:50

The list featured the cryptic words in

4:52

two columns. What investigators did not

4:54

yet know was that this was

4:56

a coded death list. Authorities

4:59

then set out to search the home of Randy

5:02

who he shared with his partner Jeff and

5:04

it's here that they hit pay dirt. Immediately

5:07

when officers enter the residence, they

5:09

make a note that the couch in

5:11

the living room is the exact same

5:13

couch on which many of those men

5:15

were photographed on those Polaroids. In

5:18

the garage, authorities stumbled upon

5:20

an assortment of mismatched belts,

5:22

chains, shoelaces and clothing. It's

5:25

so creepy. Very creepy.

5:27

They locate a jacket that would later

5:29

be determined to belong to a victim from

5:31

Michigan. Investigators taken to

5:33

custody several pieces of evidence. Sadly

5:36

for authorities, this was just the

5:38

very beginning. Randy

5:40

Kraft's first attack was believed to have

5:42

occurred in March 1970. 13-year-old

5:46

Joseph Alvin Fancher ran into

5:48

Kraft at Huntington Beach. Young

5:51

Joseph told Kraft that he had just

5:53

run away from home. Kraft saw his

5:55

chance and pounced. Kraft told the

5:57

young boy that he was welcome to come home with him to his

5:59

apartment. apartment and in fact, you can live

6:02

with me because you know, I got

6:04

something for you, young Joseph. I

6:06

have a woman that would be willing to have

6:08

sex with you. Now, young

6:10

Joseph agreed

6:12

and followed Craft back to his apartment. Once

6:15

inside, Joseph was drugged and sexually

6:18

assaulted over and over again. Finally,

6:21

when Craft left the apartment for work,

6:23

Joseph saw his chance and made a

6:25

break for it. A stranger who ran

6:27

into the young boy called for an

6:30

ambulance. While in care, Joseph had to

6:32

have a stomach pump to get rid

6:34

of all the drugs that Craft had

6:36

given him. That poor kid. Joseph

6:38

would tell authorities that Craft had given him

6:41

drugs which he wanted to take. At

6:43

first, being 13 and I'm guessing a

6:46

little rebellious, he did want to do that. So when

6:48

he did take the drugs and then he was left

6:50

a little out of it, Craft beat him up. Joseph

6:53

did tell them that he was also assaulted.

6:56

Police head over to the apartment to speak with

6:58

Randy Craft and they do a search of the

7:00

apartment. Now, mind you, this is in 1970. Since

7:03

Joseph told the officers he willingly

7:06

took the drugs, no

7:08

charges were filed. Can you just...

7:12

I can't believe that but it's so

7:14

infuriating. It happens so much. Who knew?

7:18

Randy Craft enrolled at Long Beach State

7:20

University in 1971

7:22

where he would major in education. Could

7:25

you imagine him being a teacher? Yeah,

7:28

I can. It is here

7:30

that Craft met Jeff Graves who was

7:33

also a teaching student and the

7:35

two started a relationship. It

7:37

was shortly after these two became a

7:40

couple that Craft began his massive killing

7:42

spree and his bizarre coded

7:44

documentation of his victims. It

7:47

was October 5th, 1971 when a

7:49

new body was discovered close to the

7:52

Ortega Highway. The man would

7:54

be identified as 30-year-old Wayne

7:56

Joseph Duquette and he was

7:58

last seen on September 20th. The.

8:00

Long Beach native worked as a bartender

8:02

at a gay bar called The Stable

8:04

and Sunset Beach. Suited.

8:06

As severe decomposition, officials could not

8:08

determine if he had been murdered,

8:10

but they believe that his high

8:12

blood alcohol level was likely because

8:15

of death. This. Would be

8:17

Randy Crafts first journal entry with

8:19

the single word. Quote. Stable.

8:23

So. As you can see he starts. To.

8:25

It's almost to remind himself of where he

8:27

met them. Give them little code words. It.

8:30

Would take almost a year and a half before

8:32

crap would strike again about he was stopped near

8:35

the Four O Five freeway and seal be it's

8:37

on December twenty sixth, nice and seventy two. The.

8:39

Man turned out to be twenty

8:41

year old Marine Edward Daniel More,

8:43

who was last seen at Camp

8:45

Pendleton Barracks on Christmas Eve. More.

8:48

Had been bloods and and strangled. The.

8:50

Killer less bite marks on his genitals

8:53

and and and what would soon become

8:55

a signature of his. A sock

8:57

had been inserted into. Moore's Rectum.

9:00

In the notebook he wrote

9:03

he the am. February.

9:05

Six Nineteen Seventy Three. To six weeks

9:07

later, another body was discovered beside. The Terminal

9:09

Island Freeway in the Wilmington District of

9:12

Los Angeles. He appeared to be around

9:14

the age of eighteen years old. He

9:16

too, had been strangled, with authorities believing

9:18

it had happened within forty eight hours

9:20

of finding his body. Just like the

9:22

other one, his own sock had been

9:24

stuffed into his back on. The.

9:27

Body unfortunately would never be identified

9:29

and to this day remains a

9:31

john doe. The

9:33

next body was discovered on Easter Sunday

9:36

in Huntington Beach. The man was stress,

9:38

but was missing his shoes and socks.

9:40

Once he was undress, investigators discovered that

9:42

his cynical had been removed. Authorities.

9:45

Were unable to determine the cause

9:47

of death of believed it was

9:49

either suffocation or from blood loss.

9:52

The victim was seventeen year old

9:54

Kevin Clark Bailey. His code name

9:56

was Airplane Hill. Another

9:58

john doe was dismembered. But this time

10:00

the killer scattered his body parts across

10:03

two counties. His head was found

10:05

in Long Beach, the torso, right

10:07

leg and both arms in San

10:09

Pedro and the left leg in

10:11

Sunset Beach. His hands were never

10:13

found. Bondage marks were

10:15

evident and the remains had been refrigerated

10:18

before dumping which as we

10:20

know usually is to throw off the time

10:22

of death. On

10:26

July 28, 1973, 20-year-old Ron

10:28

Webe disappeared while out drinking at the

10:30

bars. His body would be discovered just two days

10:32

later in Seal Beach beside the 405 freeway. With

10:36

this murder, it becomes evident the killer is

10:38

becoming more violent. Webe had

10:40

been tied up, had been hung

10:42

upside down at some point during

10:44

his captivity for torture purposes.

10:47

There were bite marks on his genitals as well as

10:49

his stomach. A sock had been snuffed

10:51

into his rectum. The code

10:53

name for Ron was Seventh Street. There

10:56

would be yet another victim in 1973. On

11:00

December 29, 23-year-old art student

11:02

Vincent Cruz Mestes was found

11:04

in a ravine in the

11:06

San Bernardino Mountains. He

11:09

was barefoot but dressed and just like the

11:11

others, his socks had been stuffed into his

11:13

rectum. His hands were missing. Plastic

11:16

bags covered the bottoms of his arms

11:18

where his hands should have been. There

11:21

was also something shoved into his penis. The

11:24

code name that the killer

11:26

gave him was Vincent M.

11:28

20-year-old Malcolm Eugene Little was discovered on

11:30

June 1, 1974. His

11:33

new body was discovered propped up

11:35

against a tree beside Highway 86

11:38

west of the Salton Sea in Imperial

11:40

County. Again, the killer

11:43

changed his signature. This time,

11:45

the body was left on display

11:47

with the legs spread open, the

11:49

genitals removed, and a branch was

11:51

inserted nearly six inches into his

11:53

rectum. The name the

11:56

killer gave him was Teen Trucker.

12:00

Later, eighteen year old Marine Roger

12:02

Dickerson had last been seen in

12:04

the San Clemente Bar. He

12:06

told his friends he had met a guy and the guy

12:08

was gonna give him a ride the Los Angeles. He.

12:11

Would be found near a Laguna Beach

12:13

golf course and he had been strangled

12:15

and sodomized with bite marks on his

12:17

nipple and penis. The code

12:19

for him was M C. Laguna.

12:23

The next victim was discovered on

12:25

August third, nineteen Seventy Four and

12:27

was located outside of Long Beach

12:29

by We'll Field Workers. Victim

12:31

was twenty five year old Thomas

12:33

Paxton leave he had been strangled

12:35

he and he was dressed. Friends.

12:38

Reported seeing him the day before his

12:40

discovery. There seem to be no mutilation

12:42

of the body. Peer. To

12:44

was the code assigned to him.

12:47

Because it where he picked him up. Yeah,

12:49

no, but I'm just weird that there's no.

12:51

She's. Just I'm just saying. somebody plan

12:53

alarms and. Right? He's just was

12:56

killed. but he was and mutilated

12:58

at us and wasn't mutilated s

13:00

I'm guessing somebody came upon him

13:02

because it seems like this guy's

13:04

the whole point is to be

13:06

cruel. There, And yeah, and

13:08

that's what he can. I got off

13:10

on this. Twenty. Three

13:12

year old Gary Wayne cargo by was found

13:14

the Or Highway in southern Orange County just

13:16

nine days later. He. Was fully dressed

13:19

but barefoot. Just likely his body was

13:21

not mutilated and death seem to come

13:23

from a drug. Overdose. At.

13:25

This point investigators are not sure if

13:27

these last two are the killers victims.

13:30

The. Codename for Gary was Big

13:32

Sir. James. Cox, a

13:34

seventeen year old Zionist on September Twenty

13:37

ninth. Nineteen Seventy Four. Dressed.

13:39

As white Navy uniform, he was last

13:41

seen attempting to hitch a ride from

13:43

his mother's residents and Long Beach to

13:45

the Naval School of Health Services and

13:47

San Diego where he was undergoing training

13:50

to become a medic. Is

13:52

code name was Navy White.

13:55

Nineteen. Year old James Dale Breathes was next

13:57

in. this time they knew the same killer was.

14:00

responsible. His body was discovered on November 29th,

14:02

1974 in Irvine. Again, his body was posed

14:07

with his legs spread and a branch shoved

14:09

up his rectum. Twiggy was

14:11

the code for Reeves. Oral

14:14

Alfred Stewart, Jr., affectionately known as

14:17

Buddy to his friends and family,

14:19

remains a figure shrouded in mystery,

14:21

especially regarding his childhood. However,

14:24

by 1974, Oral was 18

14:27

years old and widely regarded as a

14:29

committed and proud Marine. Hailing

14:31

from Des Moines, he had recently

14:33

completed boot camp when he departed

14:36

from Camp Pendleton Base in the

14:38

early morning hours of November 1974.

14:41

On that day, he requested some money from

14:43

his family for his leave and

14:45

thereafter vanished without a trace. Following

14:48

his disappearance, the Marine Corps

14:51

categorized Oral Stewart as a

14:53

deserter. However, in 2012, look at

14:55

all those

14:57

years and you know what's going to come save him. When

15:00

his DNA matched that of

15:02

John Doe, number 155, he

15:06

was then changed to honorably

15:08

discharged. Quote, he was

15:10

murdered, asserted his brother Carl. I

15:12

never believed he simply vanished. His love

15:15

for his family and the Marines was

15:17

too profound. The code name

15:19

that would be associated with Oral was

15:21

Iowa. In December

15:23

1974, 17-year-old John Lares received some new

15:26

roller skates for Christmas and he was

15:28

excited to go to the skating rink

15:30

to give his new roller skates a

15:32

spin. Remember those days? That was so

15:35

exciting. I do. He left

15:37

to go to the Long Beach skating rink but

15:39

would never be seen again. He

15:41

was discovered in the surf on Sunset Beach.

15:44

Toxicology reports would reveal he had alcohol

15:46

in a system and that he had

15:48

been bound and strangled. A

15:51

wooden stake had been shoved into his

15:53

rectum. Something discovered at

15:55

the scene would prove to be important.

15:58

There were two sets

16:00

of footprints indicating, Jen,

16:03

that two people had carried him from

16:05

the car to the beach. Mm-hmm.

16:08

So there's a helper. There is a

16:10

helper. Skates was

16:12

the codename connected back to young

16:15

John. On January 17th, 1975,

16:19

21-year-old Craig Victor Jonites was

16:21

strangled to death near a

16:23

long beach hotel on the

16:25

Pacific Coast Highway. He

16:27

was wearing two pairs of pants, one

16:30

over the other, but he

16:32

was barefoot. His codename

16:34

was Golden Seals.

16:37

A note here is that all

16:39

the victims suffered horrible torture and

16:42

mutilation. Horrible, horrible. Like I

16:44

said, it's all cruel. It's so

16:46

cruel. It's to be cruel. Unless something from

16:48

this point on, I'm going to not really mention

16:50

that because we can kind of just know

16:53

that it happened, okay? But we don't need to

16:55

really get into that. If something is

16:57

really remarkably different, I'll make mention of

16:59

it. But we just

17:01

know this killer is just like you said, he really

17:04

gets off on the torture. He wants

17:06

the pain. He wants to see the pain. Has to. On

17:09

January 24th, 1975, a

17:11

task force was established in Santa

17:13

Ana which consisted of representatives from

17:16

all of the counties that had

17:18

been affected by this killer. Also

17:20

in attendance was an FBI profiler

17:23

who determined that the killer, quote,

17:25

desires to be masculine but

17:28

does not feel masculine, gnawing

17:30

the nipples and genitals of

17:33

his prey to symbolically make

17:35

the victim a female, end

17:37

quote. That is something. I

17:40

know. That's exactly what I thought, huh? That's

17:43

some deep psychological stuff going on there,

17:45

right? That's a thinker, yeah. would

18:00

never be seen again. On

18:02

May 8th, some boys were looking

18:05

for some starfish at the Long

18:07

Beach Marina and discovered his severed

18:09

head. She not dramatic that would be for

18:11

those young kids? Yeah, I can only imagine.

18:14

The code parking lot was linked

18:16

back to young Keith. Now,

18:20

Crotwell's friends were angry and they wanted

18:22

answers so they set up to find

18:24

a car that was said to have

18:26

been one of his last rides, a

18:28

black and white Mustang. Now, I

18:30

gotta give these friends some kudos man, let me

18:32

tell you. These guys, guess what? They

18:34

hit it, they hit it hard and it only

18:37

took them just days to discover the car and

18:39

then they thankfully did not handle it on their

18:41

own but they did go back and report it

18:43

to police. Now, police traced

18:45

the vehicle's registration and went to question

18:48

the owner of the car. The

18:50

man was Randy Kraft. Now,

18:53

Kraft told investigators that he had indeed

18:55

given Keith a ride but it dropped

18:57

him off very much alive at an

18:59

all-night restaurant. Now,

19:01

detectives weren't buying the story and they

19:04

wanted to charge Randy Kraft with murder.

19:06

However, LA County prosecutors

19:08

said nope, since there

19:10

was nobody, that meant that they could

19:12

not determine if murder was the cause

19:14

of death. I don't know,

19:16

I think I severed head is pretty clear indication that something's

19:19

not right. You would think you

19:21

couldn't do it yourself. And you don't end

19:23

up in an ocean, right? Exactly. Mm-hmm. You

19:25

know, maybe if there was a car accident

19:27

scene, okay, maybe. To better

19:30

understand, our killer, of course, we have to

19:32

dive into his background as we always do.

19:34

So, here we go. Randy

19:36

Kraft was born on March 19th, 1945 in Long Beach,

19:38

California as the

19:41

fourth child and the only son of

19:43

his parents. In 1948, the family relocated

19:45

to Orange County.

19:48

Now, in high school, Randy engaged in some

19:50

activities such as playing the sax and the

19:52

band and he ended up graduating in

19:54

June 1963. Following

19:57

his high school graduation, he enrolled at

19:59

the... conservative Claremont College in

20:02

Pomona, California. It was conservative

20:04

then, I'm not so sure it's conservative now. Now,

20:07

at Claremont, Kraft found employment bartending

20:09

at a gay bar in Garden

20:11

Grove. It was around his junior

20:13

year that people started talking about Randy

20:16

and his proclivity to

20:19

say, engage and enjoy

20:21

bondage during his sexual

20:23

activities, adventures. It

20:25

was also during this time that he

20:27

began to use volume to relieve his

20:30

aches and pains and or recreational use.

20:32

I think we can say that he

20:34

probably enjoyed it recreationally too. In

20:36

1966, an encounter

20:38

with law enforcement occurred and

20:40

Randy was arrested for lewd

20:43

conduct after prepositioning an undercover

20:45

police officer in Huntington Beach.

20:47

Now, since this was his first offense, he

20:50

received just a warning which

20:52

kind of strikes me as funny because if you

20:54

have an undercover police officer doing that, don't

20:57

you want to try to find these people and prevent them

20:59

from doing other things but you just get a warning? They

21:01

would think but it's

21:04

sometimes easier just to give a warning, isn't it?

21:06

I guess so but if that's what they were there for,

21:08

you would think that they would, you know, follow

21:10

through a little bit. We're not

21:12

the professionals, we just play along TV. Sometimes

21:14

it's easier to get the paycheck. Right? I

21:17

guess. Kraft enlisted in the

21:19

US Air Force. He did

21:21

quite well in the aptitude test

21:23

and he actually got secret security

21:25

clearance after a few background checks.

21:28

Stationed at Edwards Air Force Base,

21:30

he ended up overseeing the painting

21:32

of test planes. Okay. There's

21:35

a job for everything, I guess. It's important.

21:38

It is. Something would occur

21:40

and it would change things for him when

21:42

in 1969 Kraft's sexuality came

21:47

to the surface. Now, of course, you know what time

21:49

this was and being in the military, that's not going

21:51

to go over. So his family

21:53

and of course his Air Force superiors

21:55

were shocked at this and

21:57

he would end up getting a discharge.

22:00

on medical grounds. Okay,

22:02

I guess. Probably because

22:05

didn't they consider that a mental illness

22:07

back then again? I think so, yes. Returning

22:11

to civilian life, Kraft resumed his bartending

22:13

career, resorting to a combo of speed

22:15

and beard to shed weight. At

22:18

this point, his friends noticed more than

22:20

just the outside changes to Randy. However,

22:22

it would take another 14 years

22:26

for those close to Kraft

22:28

to uncover the chilling truth.

22:31

I cannot believe he could operate this long. He

22:34

didn't take that off. He didn't get what he did, I

22:36

guess. No DNA yet, that's why.

22:39

The close call of getting caught and

22:41

being questioned by police scared Kraft, but

22:43

not enough to make him stop. Kraft

22:46

would find himself in trouble once again

22:48

in June 1975 as he was arrested

22:50

for lewd conduct, which was,

22:52

at the time, a misdemeanor. His

22:54

job laid him off, but his computer

22:56

skills quickly landed him a new

22:59

job. 21-year-old

23:01

Larry Jean Walters was killed on Halloween 1975

23:03

and just two months later on

23:06

New Year's Eve, 22-year-old Mark Hall

23:08

vanished from a party in San

23:10

Juan, Capistrano. On January

23:12

3rd, 1976, an off-duty

23:15

policeman found his nude body

23:17

near the Riverside County line.

23:21

Later on, digging into all

23:23

of this, prosecutors would later

23:25

characterize this murder as the

23:27

worst of all Kraft's known murders

23:29

because of the severe abuse that is

23:31

believed to occurred while he was still

23:33

alive. His death was

23:36

caused by leaves and dirt

23:38

lodged deep into his trachea.

23:41

This would be Mark Hall I'm speaking of. Hall's

23:44

penis had been cut off and inserted into

23:46

his rectum. A lighter was used

23:48

to burn his eyes out as well as burn

23:50

parts of his torso. There's

23:52

more to this, more graphic torture.

23:56

You get the idea. I'm gonna stop there. Yeah, we don't

23:58

have to go into it. You can look. it

24:00

up if you want. It was about

24:02

this time when all of this occurred. You can

24:05

kind of see how things amp up with these killers

24:07

and sometimes you can trace it back to something going

24:09

on in their personal life and I think that's a

24:11

kind of what was happening here. At this

24:14

time right around when this was happening,

24:17

Kraft and his partner Jeff fell out. They had

24:19

a falling out and they broke up. Kraft

24:22

then met and moved in with 19 year

24:25

old Jeff Sheeley. Now Kraft took

24:27

a short break of killing because you know he's

24:29

in love but of course he's gonna get back

24:31

to it and now that his victims seemed

24:34

to be getting younger and younger

24:36

as he's getting older and older. I was

24:38

just about to say that. Yep his partner's only 19 now.

24:50

Some people just know the best rate for you

24:53

is a rate based on you with all state.

24:55

Not a rate based on Terry who keeps and

24:59

makes the car behind them. Oh

25:02

no they're about to... Save

25:05

with drive-wise and all state apps and only

25:08

pay a rate based on you. In

25:11

case we haven't met, I'm Dino Colombo. I represent people hurt by a truck.

25:25

It's what we do every day. I've

25:28

seen truck accidents devastate families but

25:30

we can help. Hurt by a

25:32

truck? Call Colombo Law. In

25:35

case we haven't met, I'm Dino Colombo. I

25:38

represent people hurt by a truck. It's what

25:40

we do every day. Navigating

25:42

the law can be tough but we're

25:44

tougher. Let us handle the

25:46

fight. Hurt by a truck? Call Colombo Law.

26:00

around this time that something curious

26:02

started to happen. Bodies were

26:04

found dumped on the side of the

26:06

freeways or in dumpsters but they were

26:08

stuffed in trash bags. There

26:10

was 13 year old Oliver Peter Mullitor's

26:13

body in Manhattan Beach that was found on

26:15

March 21st 1976. He was 13? Yes. 17

26:17

year old Kenneth Eugene Buchanan on

26:25

April 7th who was found discarded in Inglewood.

26:27

14 year old Larry

26:29

Armaderis was found in Los Angeles on

26:31

April 19th followed by 13 year

26:34

old Michael Craig McGee and Redondo

26:36

Beach on June 11th. October

26:39

brought the murder of 16 year old

26:41

Randall Lawrence Moore whose remains were abandoned

26:43

in a trash bag along Highway 70

26:46

east of El Cone. The

26:49

year end saw the disappearance of

26:51

19 year old Paul Fuchs from

26:53

Redondo Beach on December 10th. His

26:55

body has never been covered. There

26:57

were other victims found in

26:59

Bordego hot springs and near

27:02

Calexico on the Mexican border.

27:04

There were many many more. Police

27:07

did not know this was another

27:09

killer operating at the exact

27:11

same time with the same

27:14

victimology. This serial killer

27:16

was known as the trash

27:18

bag killer Patrick Kearney. He

27:21

was also known as the freeway killer because he

27:23

left his victims on the sides of the freeway.

27:26

Good news for police and the community was that

27:28

in 1977 Patrick would be

27:31

arrested for 28 trash

27:34

bag murders and then adding

27:36

another seven to that total. Patrick

27:38

would confess to the murders but struggled

27:40

to admit guilt to those that he

27:42

had tortured. To avoid a

27:44

death sentence he agreed to plead guilty. Patrick

27:47

was charged with 21 counts

27:49

of murder and was given 21

27:51

life sentences. As of

27:53

today Patrick who is now

27:55

84 is incarcerated at California's

27:57

Mule Creek State Prison. He's

28:00

been denied parole eight times but

28:02

will face the board again in

28:04

January of 2027. Let's

28:08

hope he never gets out. Yeah,

28:10

he's pretty old so. Sadly

28:14

for authorities, they knew that Patrick

28:16

was not their original killer because

28:18

the murders continued. But there's more,

28:21

Jen, of course, right? So you

28:23

would think that two serial killers

28:25

working in the same area at

28:27

the same time targeting the same

28:30

kind of victims is frightening enough,

28:32

isn't it? Who

28:34

would think? Enter number three.

28:38

William George Bonin, also

28:40

known as the Freeway Killer and the

28:42

Freeway Strangler, operated from November 1968 to

28:45

June 1980 in Southern California where

28:50

he raped, tortured, and murdered young

28:52

men and boys. He confessed

28:55

to 21 murders but he was convicted

28:57

only of 14. However,

28:59

officials are still sure there's

29:02

more. Bonin's M.O.

29:04

typically involved enticing his victims

29:07

into his van under the

29:09

pretext of consensual sex. He

29:11

earned the moniker Freeway Killer due to

29:13

the discovery of most of his victims'

29:16

bodies near the freeways. Often

29:18

he received assistance from one of his

29:20

four known accomplices. Vernon

29:22

Butts, one of his accomplices,

29:24

was implicated in court for

29:26

12 murders but took his own life,

29:29

of course he did, before standing trial in 1982.

29:33

After nine days of surveillance

29:35

on June 11th, plainclothes police

29:37

observed Bonin driving around Hollywood

29:40

making unsuccessful attempts to

29:42

lure five separate boys into

29:44

his van before finally succeeding with one.

29:47

The authorities trailed him until he parked at

29:49

a service station adjacent to the Hollywood

29:51

Freeway. Then cautiously approached his

29:53

vehicle. When officers heard screams

29:56

and banging sounds coming from within

29:58

the van, the officers were arrested. murders forcefully

30:00

entered. On January 6,

30:02

1982, they convicted William Bonin of 10 of the

30:07

murders for which he was tried. William

30:10

Bonin was put to death at

30:12

San Quentin State Prison on February

30:14

23, 14 years

30:16

after receiving his initial death

30:18

sentence. He became the first

30:21

individual to undergo execution by lethal

30:23

injection in the state of California.

30:26

Still, the murders continued.

30:29

Roland Young, age 23, was released

30:32

from Orange County Jail on June

30:34

10th following his arrest for public

30:36

intoxication. He exited the facility at

30:38

8.19 p.m. The following

30:40

morning on June 11th at 3.30

30:43

a.m., he was discovered deceased in

30:45

an Irvine gutter. Jail

30:48

out was the code assigned to

30:50

him. Another Marine,

30:52

23-year-old Richard Keith, fell victim to

30:54

the killer. Keith, who had

30:56

hitchhiked from Camp Pendleton to Los Angeles

30:58

to visit his girlfriend, engaged in a

31:01

dispute with her regarding his

31:03

mode of transportation. He departed at 11 p.m.

31:05

on June 19th hitchhiking back

31:07

to the base. His lifeless body

31:09

was discovered the following morning in

31:11

southern Orange County. Once

31:13

more, authorities suspected the involvement of

31:16

two individuals in this crime, one

31:19

to drive and another to push

31:21

Keith's body from the moving vehicle.

31:23

He was assigned code Marine

31:26

Carson. Keith

31:28

Clingvale was discovered by a motorist on July

31:31

6, 1978 lying across the northbound lane

31:34

of the I-5 in Mission Viejo.

31:37

Although still alive at the time, he

31:39

did succumb to a massive overdose

31:41

of liquor and Tylenol. Paramedics

31:43

arrived at the scene at 3.30 a.m. but

31:46

despite their efforts, they were unable to save

31:48

him. The code that the killer gave

31:50

him was Hike Out

31:52

LB Boots. Richard

31:55

Anthony Crosby, known as Rick Among His Friends, was

31:57

born on September 2, 1958. His

32:00

last sighting was on September

32:02

28, 1978 hitchhiking home from

32:04

a theater in Torrance. Interestingly

32:07

enough, a 1959 newspaper clipping from

32:09

the Long Island Independent had been

32:11

linked to Richard and this suggested

32:14

possibly that this is where he

32:16

came from, this is maybe had

32:18

family back then. The

32:20

clipping dated January 4, 1959 mentions,

32:24

craft victim at four

32:27

months old, featuring a photo

32:29

of an officer holding Richard and

32:31

his twin brother Robert A.

32:33

Crosby. The caption indicates

32:35

their mother's involvement in an narcotics

32:37

case with the twins placed under

32:40

the care of Long Beach Juvenile

32:42

Bureau. The revelation suggests that

32:44

Richard had at least one sibling,

32:46

a twin, and was born into

32:48

a family of addiction. Richard's

32:50

life remains a matter of speculation, leaving

32:53

us to wonder about all of this.

32:56

The code for Richard given to him

32:58

from the killer was Torrance. Torrance?

33:01

Torrance, California. That's a town but

33:03

yeah, Torrance. Michael Joseph Enderbiton, a

33:06

21-year-old truck driver from Long Beach was discovered on

33:08

November 18, 1978. His body was found dumped just

33:10

20 feet away from the location

33:14

where Edward Moore had been found

33:17

in December 72. That's shocking. 20

33:19

feet away, five

33:23

years apart. His nickname given

33:25

to him by the killer was Dart 405.

33:27

Donald Harrell Krizzle

33:31

met his end June

33:33

16, 1979 when he was pushed

33:35

from a slow moving vehicle along the 405 freeway

33:38

in Irvine. There were some

33:40

conflicting reports coming in from witnesses as

33:43

whether the automobile was a car

33:45

or a van. When police

33:48

arrived, they found the young marine's

33:50

body marked by tire tracks still

33:52

warm. Ligature marks were evident

33:54

on his neck and wrist. His

33:56

cause of death was not attributed to strangulation

33:58

or injuries sustained from the the fall

34:00

but rather to an overdose of

34:02

alcohol and painkillers. Randy

34:05

Kraft named him Marine Drunk

34:08

Overnight Shorts. He's

34:10

not very creative with his name, does he? No, he

34:12

is not and it's almost I think it's just because

34:15

there's so many, I think it just takes him back

34:17

to who was who and oh yeah,

34:19

that was the Marine that I picked up and he was

34:21

drunk and he was wearing... Just like small details. Yeah. Yeah.

34:25

Just enough to give him I guess that thrill of

34:27

going back. The memory of it all. Yeah. Gregory

34:30

Jolly or Gregory Wallace's, depending on

34:32

where you go, last confirmed

34:34

sighting was on August 12,

34:37

1979 when he was dropped off by friends.

34:39

He had mentioned to them that his intention

34:41

was to hitchhike to California because he wanted

34:43

to go to Disney World.

34:46

Well, who doesn't? Lakes MC

34:49

was his nickname given to him by Kraft.

34:53

In 1979, Southern California freeways became

34:55

grim scenes as more than a

34:57

dozen male corpses were discovered. Could

35:00

you imagine that today? That's crazy.

35:03

Like a freeway here in St. Louis,

35:05

you know, and in one year, a

35:07

dozen bodies are found. The

35:10

victims ranged in age from 13 to 24. Among

35:14

those identified by the police were 13-year-old Thomas

35:16

Lundgren who had been seen being picked up

35:18

in Reseda at 11 a.m. on May 28.

35:22

His body was later found dumped at around 1.30

35:25

p.m. This

35:27

was marking a tragic chapter in

35:29

a series of disturbing events. Yeah.

35:32

The media frenzy and the fear

35:35

would be unreal. Unreal.

35:38

They're getting younger as we can say. Right. He

35:40

was 13. This next one is 15. Jeffrey

35:44

Sare, 15-year-old student at Saddleback High School

35:46

was last seen in Westminster, California.

35:49

He had spent the evening with his

35:51

girlfriend and her three siblings watching the

35:53

film and Justice for All. Jeffrey

35:56

departed around 10 p.m. He was going to

35:59

take a bus home. but he didn't realize

36:01

the buses quit operating around 8 p.m.

36:04

Speculated that he might have opted to

36:07

hitchhike or tried to hitchhike, but

36:09

he never made it home and hasn't been

36:11

heard from since. Now contrary

36:13

to suspicions of him running

36:15

away, Jeffrey's mother and stepfather

36:17

firmly believe he did

36:19

not run away. He did not have

36:22

any issues at home and he had

36:24

no prior behavior of doing this. Also

36:26

when he left, he didn't have his jacket on, he

36:29

didn't have any money and he didn't have any ID.

36:32

The codename given to

36:34

Jeffrey by Randy Kraft,

36:36

Westminster Date. I'm

36:38

guessing what happens here with Randy getting in

36:40

his head. He picked up Jeffrey at Westminster.

36:43

How are you? What did you do tonight?

36:45

I went on a date with my girlfriend

36:47

to go watch movies. See what I'm saying?

36:49

How we pulled this all together. And not

36:51

like I went out on a date with

36:53

this boy. No,

36:55

I think it's more because if you go to

36:58

other stuff like the drunk, the guy was drunk and

37:00

yeah. Mark Alan Marsh born

37:02

on April 8, 1960 in

37:04

Texas was a marine stationed

37:06

at the El Toro base. You

37:09

can sell Randy Kraft really likes

37:11

marines and sailors. Mark

37:14

was a frequent hitchhiker and he told

37:16

some friends back in early February 1980

37:19

that he had planned to hitch a

37:21

ride to Buena Park. His

37:24

code given to him by Randy

37:26

was Marine Head B.P.

37:29

Buena Park, Marine Head.

37:33

17-year-old Marcus Grabs took his final

37:35

ride out of Newport Beach along

37:37

the Pacific Coast Highway on August

37:39

5, 1979. His body

37:41

was discovered the next morning at 6.30

37:44

a.m. beside the Ventura Freeway. 15-year-old

37:47

Donald Hayden was last seen alive in Hollywood

37:49

at 1 a.m. on August 27, 1979.

37:53

His body was discovered by construction workers

37:55

in Liberty Canyon left in a dumpster

37:58

at a new housing project. 17

38:01

year old David Morello vanished while hitchhiking

38:04

along Highway 101 on September

38:06

9th. Tragically, just two days later,

38:08

his nude corpse was found on

38:10

the highway shoulder adding to

38:12

the high count of this

38:14

vicious killer as he keeps killing. Now

38:17

in response to the escalating danger,

38:20

gay bars across Southern California started

38:22

posting warnings for their patrons accompanied

38:24

by photos of men in hopes

38:26

of identifying various John Doe victims.

38:30

Even with this all going on, Randy

38:33

Kraft, a regular at these

38:35

bars, appeared to discredit the

38:37

threat because of course he did since

38:39

you know he's the one

38:41

responsible. So in other words like when the

38:44

bartender would say, hey Randy, you know the

38:46

sky's operating, you need to be careful and

38:48

he goes, oh I'm fine, nothing's gonna happen

38:50

to me because he was

38:52

the one making it happen. Here

38:55

comes a change and a bigger

38:58

killing field I guess is how we could say it.

39:01

In June 1982, Randy Kraft started to

39:04

travel for work to Michigan,

39:06

Oregon and San Francisco. Now

39:09

Jen, I know you're not gonna believe this but oddly

39:11

enough, similar murders began

39:13

to happen in these exact

39:15

locations when Randy Kraft

39:17

was in these locations.

39:20

I know shocking. 17

39:23

year old Michael Shawn O'Fallon wanted

39:25

to see the world. He's only 17 of

39:27

course he did and that's in quotes. After

39:29

completing high school in June 1980, he embarked

39:32

on a hitchhiking journey to British

39:35

Columbia. Despite making it

39:37

to Oregon, his naked corpse was found

39:39

along the I-5 on July 17th 1980. He was given the

39:44

nickname Portland Denver. September

39:46

3rd 1980, children playing near El Toro Marine

39:50

Air Base made a grim discovery. The

39:52

body of Robert Wyatt Loggins Jr. wrapped

39:55

in a plastic garbage bag. Loggins

39:58

was a 19 year old Marine who had

40:00

last been seen alive on August 22nd. He

40:03

had been deceased for two or three days

40:05

by the time he was found. Kraft named

40:07

him MCHB

40:10

Short. Okay. Michael

40:13

Dwayne Cluck, age 17, tragically became

40:16

the first known victim of 1981.

40:18

He was hitchhiking from Seattle to

40:20

California in April when he accepted

40:22

a ride with his killer. Cluck

40:24

made it all the way to

40:26

Oregon but was then dumped along

40:28

the I-5. Michael's

40:31

nickname or code was

40:33

Portland Blood. On

40:36

July 29th, residents of Echo Park

40:38

in Los Angeles raised concerns with

40:40

police about foul odors coming from

40:42

the nearby Hollywood Freeway. Upon

40:45

investigation, officers discovered two

40:47

bodies in a gully. One of

40:49

the victims, 13-year-old Raymond Davis, had

40:51

disappeared several weeks earlier while searching

40:53

for a lost dog. The other

40:56

victim, 16-year-old Robert Avila, had

40:58

been reported missing from Hollywood.

41:01

Raymond's code was dog

41:04

and Robert's code was deodorant.

41:07

I'm guessing maybe he didn't have deodorant on

41:09

or was I don't know. Who

41:12

knows? Who knows? Who knows? Three

41:14

weeks later on August 20th, 1981, the body of 17-year-old Christopher Williams

41:18

was discovered beside a road in the San

41:20

Bernardino Mountains. Williams had been

41:23

administered two different sedatives before

41:25

someone placed paper in his

41:27

nostrils resulting in suffocation. Christopher

41:30

was given the name Hollywood

41:32

Muff. Another victim

41:35

from Oregon, 26-year-old Brian Winter, was

41:37

discovered along the I-5 near Portland on

41:39

November 26th. He had been drugged

41:41

with alcohol and Valium ultimately killed

41:44

by suffocation. On December

41:46

7th, as all of

41:48

his cases unfolding, Kraft was

41:50

in Grand Rapids, Michigan attending

41:52

a computer conference and

41:54

Portland Head was the code name

41:56

for Brian. That

41:58

same night, cousins Dennis out and

42:00

Chris Shoreborn disappeared from the bar

42:03

in Randy Craft's hotel. Their

42:05

bodies were found together in Plainfield Township

42:07

just two days later. Like

42:10

Witcher, both victims had been drugged with

42:12

alcohol and volume then strangled. The

42:14

two were coded GR2. By

42:18

the time the cousins were discovered, Craft

42:21

had returned to Oregon and tragically another

42:23

teenager had lost his life. On December

42:25

9th, as Craft was checking out of

42:27

his Wilsonville Hotel, a motorist stumbled upon

42:30

the body of 19-year-old Lance Trenton Taggs

42:32

beside a nearby road not far from

42:34

where Bryan had been dumped in November.

42:37

Taggs, a former resident of Hawaii, had

42:40

moved in with his grandparents in September.

42:43

He was found deceased having been

42:45

drugged with alcohol and volume mirroring

42:47

the pattern of all of Randy

42:49

Craft's previous victims. His

42:51

code was Portland, Hawaii.

42:55

Nine days later, a man collecting cans

42:57

outside of Hubbard, Oregon made a grim

42:59

discovery, the body of 29-year-old

43:01

Anthony Jose Silvera. He

43:03

was last seen on December 3rd while hitchhiking

43:05

home from work. He had

43:08

consumed liquor and volume before being

43:10

strangled and assaulted. Anthony's

43:12

code name was Portland Reserve.

43:15

At this point, Oregon police began to

43:17

discover a pattern in the murders and

43:20

sought information from Southern California where similar

43:22

cases had occurred over the past decade.

43:25

The victims had been drugged and strangled

43:27

and often dumped. A comprehensive

43:29

search of airline records, hotel

43:31

ledger and rental car companies

43:34

was initiated to identify frequent

43:36

visitors from California. And

43:39

guess whose name appeared 18 times,

43:41

Jen? Jen

43:43

Lomond-Bomberg, Jr. Santa Claus? That

43:46

is correct, Randy Craft. So

43:48

they're closing in. Good, but

43:51

not time. Not fast enough. In

43:54

1983, Eric Church, age 21 was

43:56

discovered along the 605 freeway on

43:58

January 28th. Meanwhile,

44:00

Michael Lane, age 24, went

44:02

missing while hitchhiking through Orange

44:04

County. Now, Kraft was

44:07

already incarcerated when Lane's remains surfaced

44:09

near Ramona in 1984. Seaman

44:13

retrieved from Eric Church's body was

44:15

later matched to Randy Kraft's blood

44:17

type. Michael's

44:19

code was SD Dope,

44:22

San Diego Dope. 18-year-old

44:25

Jeffrey Nelson and 20-year-old Roger DeVall

44:27

Jr. vanished together while bar hopping

44:29

on February 11th. Their

44:32

bodies were discovered near Claremont College

44:34

two days later, showing signs of

44:36

being drugged and strangled. They

44:38

were tagged with the name 2-in-1 Beach. Like

44:43

a by-one-going frame basically. Yes. Yes.

44:47

Finally, three months and one day later,

44:49

authorities make a breakthrough by chance when

44:51

Kraft was pulled over and arrested in

44:54

Orange County and that was

44:56

when he was kept the DUI and

44:58

incidentally had the victim, Terry, the

45:00

dead Marine slumped over in his vehicle. The

45:03

killing had finally come to an end but

45:05

now the hard work of putting it all

45:08

together to build a solid case starts. Randy

45:11

Kraft now carried the moniker as

45:13

the scorecard killer due to that

45:15

list of cryptic words and letters that

45:18

pointed to his victims, the ones that

45:20

I named at the end of each

45:22

person. Police were

45:24

ultimately successful in matching known victims to

45:26

45 code names

45:28

from Randy Kraft's list. Police

45:30

believed that no entries existed for victims Eric

45:33

Church or Terry Gimbrol. Now, Terry was the

45:35

last one, of course, so he had not

45:37

had a chance to do that. The

45:39

final tally stood at 67 deceased

45:43

individuals with 22 of

45:45

them still unrecovered or

45:47

unidentified. Randy

45:50

Kraft remained uncooperative with police. Of course

45:52

he did. He had been

45:54

vastly maintaining that the notes referred to

45:56

encounters with gay partners who were still alive.

45:59

Of course. right? Just

46:01

happened to coincide very much with people that had

46:04

been found murdered as well. He

46:06

attributed his meticulous note-taking to

46:08

his, quote, anal retentive nature

46:11

and tendencies towards obsessive compulsive

46:13

behavior. Kraft adamantly asserted

46:15

that the list was innocent and by

46:17

extension, so was he. He didn't

46:20

do it. Dr. Mary Gamba Of course not. Mary Gamba

46:22

On September 8th, 1983, Orange County Sheriff Brad

46:25

Gates held a press conference where

46:27

he stated that authorities had conclusively

46:30

determined Randy Kraft's sexually deviant behavior

46:32

dating back to the 1970s. Prosecutor

46:36

Brian Brown was ready to move forward on 16 counts

46:39

of murder with the

46:41

several victims including a

46:43

John Doe from 1973.

46:46

Law enforcement amassed a substantial amount

46:48

of evidence against Randy Kraft. The

46:50

evidence included a corpse found in

46:53

his car, another victim's jacket discovered

46:55

stashed in his garage, snapshots of

46:57

several victims hidden in his

46:59

vehicle, rug fibers lifted from

47:01

another victim's body, Kraft's fingerprints

47:03

recovered from a crime scene and

47:06

that list that linked the murders

47:08

indicating Kraft's status as a prolific

47:11

trophy hunter. Now,

47:13

all the prosecutors have to do is

47:15

make it stick in court. Dr. Mary

47:18

Gamba Wait, one of the examples was a

47:20

corpse in a car? Mary Gamba Yeah, that's Terry Gamble. That's

47:22

the one that kind of caught remember the marine. Dr. Mary

47:24

Gamba You would think that'd be enough. Mary Gamba You'd need

47:26

to stick. Mary Gamba Yeah. Dr. Mary

47:29

Gamba Especially when there's blood underneath his body and

47:31

that blood came from somebody else but... Mary Gamba

47:33

Exactly, yeah. Okay. Dr. Mary Gamba Gindgen, we're not

47:35

professionals. We're just here to deliver the information. Mary

47:37

Gamba Trust the process. Dr. Mary Gamba Trust the

47:39

process. Mary Gamba That's right. So Judge McCartan made

47:42

it official on November 29th when he sentenced

47:44

Randy Kraft to death. The

47:47

judge noted receipt of several letters from

47:49

parents of missing children seeking information as

47:52

to whether Kraft had killed their sons.

47:54

Quote, somewhere down the line, the

47:57

judge said, with response to

47:59

your legal grounds... for appeals, maybe you

48:01

might give some thought in your waning

48:03

moments to help these people out." Randy

48:06

Kraft was thinking, all right, but the only person

48:08

he seemed to want to help was himself. On

48:11

September 26, 1988, more than five years following his arrest, Randy

48:17

Kraft's trial began under the

48:19

jurisdiction of Judge Donald McCartan.

48:22

Despite defense efforts to invalidate all

48:24

the evidence obtained from the 1983 searches,

48:28

search, I guess, 1983 search, the

48:30

judge ruled against them. However, he prohibited

48:32

any mention of victims beyond the 16

48:35

listed in the Orange County charges. Over

48:38

160 witnesses were called to

48:40

testify. Evidence included those Polaroid

48:42

photos as well as fibers and

48:44

blood evidence. There were also the

48:46

drugs and weapons as well as a belt

48:49

that was used to strangle Terry Gimbril. The

48:51

defense angle was to claim it was

48:54

someone else who committed all these crimes

48:56

and the evidence was simply circumstantial. Because,

48:59

you know, Randy Kraft is a great

49:01

guy and he contributes to society and

49:03

his community. Yeah, he does. The defense

49:06

stated that they knew there was a

49:08

killer out there, but it was not

49:10

Randy Kraft. Of course, this is

49:12

when they brought up the two other serial

49:14

killers that I mentioned, Bob, who were operating

49:16

at the same time and, you know, said

49:18

pretty much maybe Patrick R. William was the

49:20

killer, not Randy, of all of these kids.

49:23

Men, I guess I should say. Forensic

49:25

pathologists Walter Fisher and Robert

49:28

Richards meticulously outlined the injury

49:30

sustained by all the individual

49:32

victims. Following the conclusion of

49:34

closing arguments on May 1, 1989,

49:37

the jurors deliberated for 11 days,

49:39

11 days, to reach

49:41

their final verdict. They

49:44

acquitted Kraft of sodomizing Roger Duvall

49:46

but convicted him on all 16

49:49

murder charges plus one count

49:51

each of sodomy and mutilation,

49:54

although he didn't mutilate a lot of them. On

49:57

June 5, 1989, that same jury reconvened. and

50:00

to hear additional testimony, the state

50:02

called up Joe Fancher who was

50:04

incarcerated in Orange County following his

50:07

parole from Colorado for an auto theft

50:09

to recount Kraft's assault in March 1970.

50:11

Now this is that same little boy

50:13

that he assaulted at the start of

50:16

this case. He ended up in

50:18

prison due to auto theft. Prosecutor

50:21

Brown revisited the scorecard list

50:23

during his review emphasizing to

50:25

the jurors quote, there's nothing

50:27

wrong with him other than he

50:30

likes killing for sexual satisfaction. During

50:33

this period, the prosecution presented evidence

50:35

of several additional homicides committed by

50:37

Kraft in both Oregon and Michigan.

50:39

Despite not being prosecuted in Orange

50:41

County for those cases, the cases

50:43

were introduced to bolster the prosecution's

50:46

argument regarding Kraft's alleged pattern

50:48

of criminal behavior which

50:50

makes sense since same ones he repeated

50:52

the same thing over and over with

50:54

just slightly variances in them. The

50:57

defense disputed the prosecution's claims describing

50:59

them as highly speculative. They introduced

51:02

testimony regarding a PET scan conducted

51:04

on Kraft arguing that it revealed

51:06

abnormalities in the frontal lobes of

51:08

his brain and because of this,

51:11

he was unable to control his

51:13

emotions and impulses. He

51:15

still did it. Let's be honest. Were they

51:17

trying to prove that maybe he was mentally incompetent?

51:20

I think they were trying to say that. I

51:23

think they were just throwing stuff out hoping it

51:25

will stick. Maybe get a little bit less. I

51:27

mean, honestly, they're doing their job. I

51:30

think he was trying to not get them sent to the mental.

51:36

On August 11th, 1989, the jury delivered

51:38

a verdict of death for Randy Kraft.

51:41

Three months later on November

51:43

29th, Randy Kraft received the

51:45

death sentence. Randy Kraft's fate

51:47

is a killer that should

51:49

be killed. At the time, the

51:52

trial had been the longest. This is where

51:54

I went down a rabbit hole and got sidetracked as I

51:56

always do. At the time, this trial

51:58

had been the longest. months

52:00

and most expensive $10 million

52:02

in Orange County, California

52:04

history. However, another big

52:06

case took over that spot and

52:09

cost the state $15 million. You

52:13

want to take a guess as to what that might be? OJ?

52:16

Nope. Are we in the right thing? I don't

52:18

know. Nope. Can't follow

52:20

along. The McMartin child abuse trial. Remember when that

52:22

family was charged with a child abuse at McMartin

52:24

Preschool? Oh, the... And none

52:27

of them did it? Yeah. It's

52:29

the satanic panic. That was

52:31

terrible. Yeah, that was. In

52:34

1992, Randy Kraft filed a

52:36

lawsuit against author Dennis McDougall

52:39

and Warner Brooks over the

52:41

publication of Angel of Darkness

52:43

which depicted Kraft's case and

52:45

allegedly tarnished his reputation by

52:47

portraying him as a quote, sick,

52:50

twisted man. Randy

52:52

Kraft claimed that this portrayal

52:54

damaged his good name and

52:56

hindered his prospects for future

52:58

employment seeking $62 million

53:00

in damages. He's

53:02

in prison. However, the lawsuit

53:05

was dismissed as frivolous in June 1994.

53:08

Despite this, McDougall as well as Warner

53:10

Brooks ended up with approximately $50,000 in

53:13

legal fees. That should have never even

53:15

occurred. I don't even have any words for that. It's

53:18

runny. He's a sick, twisted man and disturbed

53:20

his good name and prospects for future employment.

53:23

He's in prison for murdering 16 but

53:25

really 60 plus people.

53:28

Okay, Randy. So

53:30

in September 1994, McDougall retaliated by seeking

53:32

to recover some of that money from

53:34

Kraft from permission from a state appellate

53:37

judge. McDougall expressed

53:39

concerns about felons, particularly those

53:41

convicted of severe crimes like

53:43

Randy Kraft, being able to

53:45

file lawsuits without consequences, potentially

53:47

burdening the legal system with

53:50

all these baseless claims. Yeah,

53:52

he highlighted the issue of individuals with

53:54

criminal backgrounds abusing the legal system without

53:57

any financial repercussions. Randy

54:00

Kraft's scorecard helped police tie

54:02

victims to Kraft but there were many

54:05

entries that could not be tied to

54:07

any victims who remain John Doe's, not

54:09

to mention the unidentified accomplices that remain

54:12

out there. The footprints

54:14

and unidentified semen recovered from

54:16

Eric Church's corpse suggest the

54:18

involvement of at least one

54:20

other perpetrator. In March

54:22

1995, Kraft's Huntington

54:24

Beach victim initially known as

54:27

only John Doe was finally

54:29

identified as 18-year-old drifter Kevin

54:31

Clark Bailey. I

54:34

get this, this is technology for

54:36

the win. In November

54:38

2022, investigators

54:41

initiated the use of genetic

54:43

genealogy to uncover the identity

54:46

of John Doe, eventually locating

54:48

relatives who provided DNA. The

54:51

victim was identified as Michael Ray

54:54

Schlitt from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His

54:56

sister informed authorities that

54:58

she had not seen her 17-year-old

55:00

brother since April of 1974. Is

55:05

that amazing? That's

55:07

wonderful. Yeah. Let's talk

55:09

about- That's wonderful that they gave him his name

55:11

back. In 2022. Thanks God for

55:14

technology now. I know. So good old

55:16

Randy Kraft, I looked him up of course. He is now

55:18

79 years old and he's

55:20

currently still on death row at San

55:22

Quentin Prison where he was housed

55:24

next to men he often played cards with

55:26

including, you ready? William Bonham.

55:29

Until William Bonham was put to death of course, but

55:31

they played cards together. No, of course.

55:34

Of course they did. So that

55:36

is the horrendous story of Randy

55:38

Kraft. I know that I might

55:40

have mispronounced some of those names and I apologize,

55:43

I tried my best on that. There was a

55:45

lot. I also know that it felt like it

55:47

was a laundry list but talking with Jen, how

55:50

could I choose who to leave out and just

55:52

say several more bodies were found. If that was

55:54

your brother or your father or your

55:56

uncle, you don't know. I'm sure everybody

55:59

understands. And I know it kind of

56:01

seemed wrong but that's and I wanted to tie him

56:03

back to their names. And we

56:05

talked earlier about the codes that he gave

56:07

them and I really think that was when

56:09

he killed that many people, there's no way

56:12

you could remember them all. And he

56:14

was using drugs and alcohol at the same time. So

56:16

I'm sure it was all of it was fuzzy anyway.

56:19

He's a disgusting, gross man.

56:21

And why is he still alive? I'm just

56:23

gonna ask that. The

56:26

world is weird. I'm telling you.

56:28

And they have three killers operating in

56:31

Southern California all targeting the same victim

56:33

at the same time. That's

56:35

I don't even know. That's insane.

56:38

Well, we can be thankful that with

56:41

technology, we probably won't have any of

56:43

these mass murderers. With

56:45

that high... This kind of mass murderers. Right.

56:48

With that high of account. Killers with this highest account.

56:50

Yeah, they'll be caught quicker. I hope so. Yeah.

56:54

Horrible man. Right where

56:56

he should be. Mm-mm. And

56:58

he's gonna stay there. Yes, he is. All right, Jen.

57:00

So next week, I'll see you. Same place, same channel. I'll

57:03
